The Black Friar in Salford

I walked in with three friends for lunch while the place was empty. The person who we spoke to suspiciously said he'll check if they had any free tables. I knew from the way he looked at me what was going to happen. What was strange was that there was literally no one there but the man turned around and said "sorry we have no free tables." Racism in this day and age is disgusting.

Has the best service. Lydia was amazing, patient,great smile, gorgeous personality, best service I’ve had at any restaurant.

We had a reservation and we were greeted at the door and seated straight away. The food was excellent and the service was excellent too. I opted for the chicken and mushroom pie with mash and greens and my partner had minced beef pie with greens and hassle-back potato. We also had sourdough bread with whipped butter to start. All the food was served quickly and was all to a high standard. We definitely recommend and we will definitely be returning in the future. Thank you.

Just been for a birthday meal. Mark was excellent. Made great recommendations that fitted with us. The pies were delicious. And the affogato just completed a brilliant meal.

I was excited to celebrate my husband’s birthday at The Black Friar, but the experience fell short of expectations. I had booked a table via email for my husband’s birthday, expecting a special evening. We had booked in advance, but when we arrived, we were seated in the waiting area near the entrance. If I would know that we will get a table there, we would never book it. It wasn’t ideal, as the doors kept opening, letting in cold air, which made it hard to relax and enjoy the evening. The food was great, but the service could use improvement. We waited quite a while for our meals, and when it came time for dessert, we had to ask multiple times for someone to take our order. Unfortunately, after waiting 20 minutes, we were told our time was up, and we had to leave without having dessert or cake. Imagine trying to celebrate a birthday without even getting to enjoy dessert or a cake! It was disappointing overall, especially for a special occasion. While the food was enjoyable, the seating and service took away from the experience.

Food is lovely and there is attention to detail. Wed recommend the crumble for dessert, pear tart wasn’t as impressive. We loved the pies also as went as part of the pie festival. Great service and attended to

We had such a lovely dinner here, Ciara was so helpful in us rearranging due to personal situations, Mark our server was very attentive and friendly. The food was delicious, my favourite being the black cherry dessert which I’d go back for alone!

Second visit on Sunday and just as good as before. Thanks to Mark for his excellent service, attentive, informative and just a great host. Beef roast dinner is superb, cooked pink to perfection. Malbec was very good as was the lovely touch of a small birthday cookie and desert wine . Beats other perhaps better known beef restaurants ! Will be back

This was my first visit and it did not disappoint. The food was delicious and the service was exceptional - Will was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu and we all enjoyed his recommendations I can't wait for next visit.

We had been in for Sunday lunch at the end of November and had a fabulous meal so decided to go back with my parents for lunch today, expecting the food to have gone up a gear given that it wasn't Sunday service. Three of us ordered pies, which were all over cooked, one of which so much that the pastry was inedible. The puddings weren't great either- the custard was split and 2 of us ordered pear frangipane which was overcooked. We sent it back once and it came back just as overcooked. The whole thing was rescued by the beautiful setting in the tavern and fantastic service by Will who was very attentive and great with our children. I'd recommend based on service and setting, but lacked finesse in the kitchen!

Just called in for a pint and a confession…no food this time, although it’s always fab.

Great atmosphere and the food was brilliant (get the Pie! It is amazing). We were looking for a dog friendly venue. We have a deaf rescue dog and it was our first visit to a restaurant with her, so we were a bit nervous of how she would handle it. However, our server Will was brilliant brought water and treats for our dog (Now Will is her best mate). Amazing service, lovely atmosphere and really good good.

Hard one to judge. Beautiful building and venue for any occasion with quality service throughout the evening. But the food was very average (which is a shame, and would stop us returning). Food choices poor, reduced menu (which is fine and we knew about in advance). But was sold out of many options, even though our table was booked for 6.30pm on a Tuesday. For example a specialist pie menu with 5 options, 2 of the options were unavailable and of the 3 pies left 1 was a vegan option. Same with the desserts. Steak and pies were very bland and dessert was far too sickly. It could have been great!

Went on Wednesday about 4.,00pm. Had a fantastic meal. Best pie ever. Fantastic service by staff couldn’t do enough. Excellent atmosphere and the decor is amazing. Worth a visit.

The Black Friar hosted a corporate dinner for us in the Glass Room and every single attendee has raved about the food, the service, the venue! The whole booking process from start to finish has been fantastic – thank you, we’ll definitely be visiting you again.

Called in over the weekend. It was very busy but we had reserved a table. Ordered food and didn't wait long for it to come. The food was excellent, hot and tasty. The waitress was very good and polite. The decor in the pub is lovely and there was a good atmosphere. Will call again.

Unnecessarily rude and unhelpful, resistance to every request, from buying a drink to seating. I’m sure the food is lovely but there feels to be a concerted effort to put you off wanting to be there

Came for Sunday lunch with friends to the beautifully cosy tipi… although technically it’s outside it wasn’t cold at all and it was a wonderful space. Cocktails were different than what you see usually and my Embers Glow was a fantastic winter warmer. The roasts were huge and delicious and we got a surprise bonus of cauliflower cheese side dish. Special thank you to Will who was a great waiter: he advised on food wine choices and took care of our dog. He skilfully accommodated us when we wanted to stay longer and was just such a nice person. He really is a credit to you. Hadar upstairs was also lovely, friendly and kind and was super helpful when it came to our dessert choices. She’s also a fantastic employee. Thanks so much, it made our friend reunion such a better experience than we had planned.

Disappointing, don't go if you are vegetarian. Went Xmas eve, extremely limited menu for vegetarian or pescatarians, and half of the other menu off due to supplier issues, not ideal for a much anticipated Xmas gathering! The Mac and cheese was dull and uninspiring, and the overpriced Bailey's desert has never seen a bottle of Bailey's, bland and boring. Yes, the ambience is lovely at Xmas, service a bit overpowering at times, menu and kitchen definitely needs a re think. What a disappointment. Maybe going for the roast would be a better experience

Below are two photos. One from when I went for my birthday in October where the portions were interesting to say the least. one leaf of kale, two carrots and two rock hard potatoes. The other is from today, very different ! The manager kindly invited my boyfriend & I back with 50% off after having an unpleasant time due to a rushed service. I can happily say today was 10x better. The staff were friendly and we had time to sit, eat and chat without being rushed out before finishing. The quality and service of today means I will easily forget what happened last time. You can see the difference in the photos alone. I personally didn’t eat much of the chicken because it lacked flavour, but the rest of the roast was lovely and my boyfriend loved the fish pie option they had today. It is a lovely location and I do think it was just an unfortunate turn of events that day in October. It gets very busy there and it’s clear why.

Gorgeous evening for my friends 30th. We booked a private room and could not fault it. Lydia looked after us SO well, she was the highlight of the evening and was so lovely and attentive.

I recently dined at The Black Friar in Salford and had quite the satisfying experience. We sampled the pork fillet, beef tartare, and lamb rib, choosing to have all our dishes arrive at once. Even though we originally visited to try their famous pie, it was unfortunately sold out by the time we ordered. That said, it hardly put a damper on our evening because the food we did have was excellent. Every dish was well-prepared and thoroughly enjoyable. The restaurant had a lovely, lively atmosphere with couples filling up the tables. Their wine selection was also impressive, though I’d love to see more French wines in the future—it’s a personal preference of mine. Overall, despite missing out on the pie, the quality of food and the ambiance made up for it. It also gives us a great reason to return and hopefully catch that elusive pie next time!

This was my first time here. Knowing that the pub had gone through renovations recently… it is far from what it used to be. The service was brilliant, didn’t have to wait long for our drinks before ordering our meals and the waitress who served us… Hadar , was amazing… such a bubbly person… joined in with me and my friends banter, which sometimes you don’t get that in some places. This made it more welcoming to be there. She took the time to chat with us, joked with us and made sure we had everything we needed…. especially when it came to more gravy!! lol The food was excellent too, chose the pie of the day, no complaints.. well presented and well cooked, didn’t wait long for the food coming..delicious .. my friend had the black forest knickerbocker glory …. Which by him is a must …. Enjoy Would highly recommend a visit if not already been 😊

We had a Christmas Eve dinner here and it was brilliant. It was busy, but the staff were attentive, and the service was excellent. The food - as always - was delicious, as were the drinks. The Holy Trinity cocktail is delicious. We had the steak and ale pie and the mushroom and chestnut lattice, followed by puddings. Thanks to Will for taking care of us! He was friendly, helpful and ensured we had a great experience.

I love everything about this place. The food is always incredible, especially the pies (worth a visit just for this). The service would get six stars if it were possible, the staff (especially Calum) are really personable and know the menu well, drinks are also served pretty quickly. This is a great place for a date as it isn't too crammed or noisy, but it's also good for larger groups of people.

We had the best meal and best service here. Our waiter Vitor really made the experience complete, he was super friendly and attentive and provided us with excellent service.

Great atmosphere acompanied by great food and on point customer service. Price on the upper end, But you get what you pay for, and even better. 10/10 will come again

A beautiful evening in a wonderful venue to celebrate our anniversary. All the staff were great, the food magnificent and as for the environment, Fantastic!! The food was not the cheapest but was worth every penny, the quality really stood out. I am sorry we did not get the staff names but during the evening we engaged with about 5 staff who were all super!

Went on NYE, set menu where every course was a delight. Lovely warm greeting on arrival, taken to our table and the menu explained. Service was impeccable and always with a smile. Cannot recommend this place enough. We have been before and it has always given 💯, did wonder if they could keep those standards at such a busy time. And boy did they!! Just AMAZING, big thank you to the lovely Camille who served us with such a smile, warmth and made the whole experience even better. Happy New Year!

I adore the Black Friar! My family and I came for a special birthday last year and returned again this year for Christmas Eve. Our server Will was absolutely brilliant. We had a couple of issues with our mains but he had them sorted in no time and made sure we left happy. The food was so delicious, as were the cocktails. Thank you so much to all the staff for working so hard over the festive period and making our Christmas Eve meal one to remember :)

Had lunch today for the first time and what a great place. The staff were professional, courteous, polite and hard working. The food was beautiful and of a high quality. Great atmosphere too. Very chilled and relaxing. Lucky to be seated near the kitchen and could see how hard the staff work and the attention they paid to the food. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and will most definitely revisit soon.

Came in for a meal with my friends from home and had a great time. Food was amazing and the service was excellent. Especially the prawn starter. Camille our waitress was very friendly and attentive and made our experience that much better. All in all a very good evening and the Rioja wine was to die for.

We had the five course New Year menu. The food was outstanding in presentation and taste. As a vegetarian, it was nice to have some variety. Our server, Will , was spot on and treated us like royalty. He was really friendly and nothing was too much trouble. It was our first visit, but we were so impressed, we will definitely return.

The restaurant are is absolutely fantastic the decor and layout make it a truly wonderful environment our server was delightful and so very happy and helpful. The food was delicious the truffle arancini and fresh made bread were divine, venison scrumptious and the pork was great. The divine father cocktail was the perfect finish to the a wonderful dining experience.

What a pleasure to stumble on to this particular food pub. The place was packed and we were glad that we had pre-booked on-line. We arrived early and it was standing room only at the bar. Our table was made available promptly and the service was fast, friendly and efficient. The waiters and waitresses are very knowledgeable of their job and promoted the pub in a very good light, also informing us of future events that we are now eager to attend. The food arrived quite quickly and was steaming hot and so delicious. 100% recommended

We had a good Christmas meal here. The service was great, the food was good, and the atmosphere was lively. However, the price felt slightly higher than expected. We spent between £50-100 per person, including the tip. While it was nice, it unfortunately didn’t feel like good value for money. Hopefully, this will improve in the future.

We were a group of 8 having dinner on Christmas Eve. The food was incredible - get the sticky toffee pudding if you can! Staff were attentive and happy to help with whatever we needed. Highly recommended!

Party of 11 booked. Orders came out cold, food under cooked or some come completely inedible. Made one person physically sick in the toilets the food was that disgusting. Out of a party of 11 people not one person enjoyed their food. Save yourself the money and get a better meal at Wetherspoons for fraction of price. Worst place I’ve ever eaten in my life! Would not recommend to anyone, not even my dog and will definitely not be returning.

We had our work Christmas party in the Winter Tavern and it was absolutely brilliant. Everyone was so impressed by the food, the atmosphere and the amazing, attentive service from Will and Curtis! Thanks so much, I am sure we will be back!

Booked as part of Rum tasting session at Salford Rum, which was really enjoyable. The pub is beautifully decorated for Christmas both outside and in. Our table was in the covered outside part, which was surprisingly welcoming, warm and comfortable. The set menu was adequate but felt it was a little cheeky to have add on costs for some of the dishes, such as the lobster and prawn Scotch Egg +£5 and the sirloin steak +£10 which I chose to order. Our booking included £30 per person for 2 courses, towards the cost of the food but still ended up paying an additional £89 with the food add ons £15, the cost of the wine £28, we added desserts, coffee and service charge. My wife enjoyed her meal choices of the goats cheese starter and the pie & mash mains. My starter was delicious, the lobster & prawn scotch egg, whereas my choice of mains, the sirloin steak, was slightly disappointing in quality, which was chewy and the fries which seemed like a frozen variety!!! Also slightly disappointed with the prices of the wines on offer. Cheapest bottle was £28. However on saying all the above we enjoyed our overall experience and would like to thank Liv and Lydia, our servers, who were both very friendly, professional and attentive without being intrusive and made sure we were well looked after. Thank you. Beautiful surroundings, terrific staff and service but price and quality of some of the dishes let it down a tad.

Me and my mum travelled to Manchester and while waiting to check in our hotel thought we would call in to this lovely place we spotted nearby, decorated beautifully every room we walked through we were in awe. Dining in what can only be described as a gorgeous christmas grotto, the food was exquisite and the thing that topped this experience was the service from our lovely waitress Liv professional attentive and very friendly. We will certainly be coming back Thankyou!

Lucky enough to have visited the festive menu twice already! And both times with the lovely Will who always has a smile and is so helpful. I love this place, spectacularly cosy Christmas feels and the food and drinks are brilliant always.

First time eating here and I was very happy with my experience. The food was outstanding, possibly the nicest pie I’ve ever had. My friend and I were served by Liv for the night and for a first time going somewhere, we couldn’t have asked for a better person to look after us. She was very helpful regarding explaining the menu, giving recommendations etc and just kept checking on us to see how the night was going and that made us feel like we weren’t just another 2 customers. All in all it was a great night and I will definitely be coming back.

A fantastic experience all round. We arrived with no reservation and sadly the place was fully booked, but they managed to squeeze us in regardless which made our night! The food and drinks were sublime and we had expert service from Hadar, with a big smile! Thank you Hadar and the BF team 😁 highly recommend!

Amazing food, staff could not have been more accommodating. We ended up being 45 minutes late for our table, but we phoned ahead and the staff could not have been more understanding!

Visited last night with 4 friends for our Christmas meal. The place was beautifully decorated and welcoming. Our waiter, Anton was a charming host, who after introducing himself did a great job of ensuring we had a wonderful time, checking regularly how everything was going and if we needed anything. As a result we had an amazing evening in an old and beautifully decorated iconic venue with wonderful food and cocktails which I highly recommend. All the staff work hard to ensure you have a great time!
