The Black Horse in Milton Keynes

We visited with friends for dinner. We have unusual dietary requirements but this did not phase either Sharon our waitress or Taron the chef. The meal that Taron created was excellent and so tasty. Thank you so much. Food intolerances are not a choice and being able to enjoy a great, safe meal with friends means a lot.

As usual... Fab service especially from Sandy. Great food and great atmosphere. Also easy to book and took really good care of allergy sufferer in the group...

Fantastic lunch. Sunday lunch was absolutely 1st class Very generous portions and wonderful service from Kim. Lovely atmosphere,very friendly and cozy atmosphere with the wood fires. Will definitely be back!

Another great dinner at the Black Horse. One of my favourite spots in MK! Never fails & menu is so good. Our hostesses Sandy & Lucy were both amazing & gave us great recommendations, and shoutout to chef Rob. Thank you to all the team! Desserts were delicious, had to add a pic.

Great local pub restaurant with great staff. Sharon looked after us as usual and we had a fabulous birthday celebration.

Had Christmas lunch deal here on Saturday 14th December. Lovely atmosphere in a very busy environment. Food was good and the waitress Vicki was extremely attentive and friendly.

The food is very tasty and not too pricey in comparison to other places around MK; unfortunately, staff quite rude. The lady that was serving us didn’t have any patience at all; she was taking food away with unfinished food without asking; my friend had to tell her to leave her plate, as she was about to take it away while she was still eating off it 🤦🏻‍♀️ Straight after we paid, she was circling us looking annoyed and after we said we will leave in a moment, she replied: yeah, people are waiting 😖 We didn’t feel very welcomed. What a shame, as I’ve been coming here for years 😢

The food was delicious (as always). Staff are friendly and helpful..... particularly our server (who was either Katie or Libetie? Vibetie?)...who overheard me wish my stepmum a happy birthday and brought her desert decorated with a candle and 'happy birthday' written on the plate in chocolate sauce. Such a lovely, unexpected touch. My stepmum was chuffed to bits! Thank you so much.

The setting is beautiful and the pub was so prettily decorated for Christmas, giving it such a lovely festive feel. Our 'primary' waitress, Julie was amazing....warm, friendly, polite, helpful and so professional. A real asset to your business. Her fellow waitress was also great. I'm so sorry we didn't get her name. The food was all really lovely - tasty, well cooked and presented.

We love this pub - the food is always amazing, and the service fantastic. We went for a meal here last Saturday, and our server Julie was excellent - really looked after us. Always know it is going to be excellent here - I would highly recommend it to anyone in the area.

Had a wonderful lunch experience with my aunt on a Saturday to celebrate her birthday. I booked a table & put a note on requesting a birthday message on my aunt’ s dessert plate. And Julie made it special with a candle & birthday song. Appreciate her detailed mind & thoughtfulness for everything.

Starter was cold, 2 desserts had to be chased and arrived after rest of party had finished eating, had to ask for cutlery. Told we could order drinks from the bar by table staff, then told we had to order drinks at table by bar staff. Food was average in my opinion for price. Bill was wrong by over £100 and had to ask twice before it was finally correct. Took over 30 minutes to pay. Nice looking venue with friendly staff but wouldn’t return.

Lovely pub and great food with service to match

The Black Horse has a fantastic location, but I've knocked a star off because of the slightly steep prices. The pub itself has plenty of character and is an absolute delight to visit and winner around. I have no idea the age of the building but it certainly stands out amidst Milton Keynes' newer builds. It's not just the building that is great, the location is also. It is situated right on the canal, weather permitting, you can enjoy the seating area metres away from passing narrow boats. There is often a good selection of beers on tap. I can't comment on wines and other drinks. Food is nice, but not quite deserving of the price tag. The food is enjoyable, but I've eaten better locally for the same/less money. While food is good, but not great, the staff and service is excellent! Ultimately you're paying for the location here (and service), which is excellent. If it's a sunny hot day there isn't much better in MK. But if you're after the best gastro pub meal in MK I'd look elsewhere. Post Covid there is no longer bar service, and the pub operates table service only. In principle I'm not a fan of this restricted operating model, but it's made entirely barrable by the fantastic staff.

What's not to love about the Black horse? The staff are friendly helpful and cheerful, even though when we visited they were fully booked and rushed off their feet they had plenty of time to help with anything, be it lighting an extra candle for us or answering menu questions. The food was terrific. We all enjoyed every course. Not one minor thing to complain about. All in all had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back.

Went out for dinner yesteday with my sister law and her husband and my parnter and must say the best Sunday roast I have ever had . I have a nut allergy and Lucy was so accommodating and so polite the service was on time and quick not like most places I have been will definitely be going back and booking for parties , celebrations . 100/100 amazing customer service thank you Lucy for making our Sunday amazing and stress free which is rare as most place your waiting or the food isn’t as good , the atmosphere isn’t warm or welcoming perfect tempo . Would tecommend the black horse 100% total for all four meals plus extras and drinks split was £60 good price

Been here for lunch today for the first time, lovely food and our server, Julie was lovely. Very attentive but not overbearing. Lovely lady. Would love to go back in the summer and sit in their gardens.

We had a fantastic experience at the Black Horse last night! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warmth and genuine hospitality. Emma, our waitress, went above and beyond to ensure our visit was perfect. Despite the restaurant being quite busy, she made us feel like a priority, always attentive and quick to anticipate our needs with a smile. Her friendly, professional demeanor added so much to our dining experience—she truly is a gem and a huge asset to the Black Horse team. We can’t wait to return for both the wonderful food and the outstanding service!

Comfortable, traditional setting paired with courteous service, a pleasant atmosphere and good food. It feels cosy, unpretentious and delivers a good experience.

The pub feels old and damp and smells a little. The food was very average, I'd cook better at home. Regular cola is £3.90 and 30% of that was ice. A few slices of bread £6.95.

Fantastic family outing. Had lunch with two small kids and grandparents. Food isn't the cheapest unlike chain pubs but it is so very delicious and high quality , the service and atmosphere were top notch.

Beautiful food. I had belly pork and it was cooked beautifully with plenty of veggies. Our server was Kim. She was very friendly and efficient she was also very attentive and careful regarding my food intolerance, I am gluten free.

Staff great. The food for everyone else seemed to enjoy it. My Plant based Burger was dry, didn’t taste very nice either. Very disappointing as this Was my favourite go to restaurant for Vegetarian menu.

Great location and venue and friendly staff. Service is also good. However they do not serve at the bar, even if you just want to sit outside and have a drink. The pub is table service only including outdoors. This is a bit off putting if you visit in a largish group and you all wish to pay separately. Although to be fair they did accommodate this for us so thanks for this.

We had Kim and Mantas and they were so lovely. He was new and he was so good and attentive. And she was so friendly and welcoming! The food was also 10/10! I will defo be back

Visited with some friends for dinner on a Tuesday, we had a lovely dinner. Our servers, Kim and Mantas were amazing, they took great care of us and made it an amazing night

Came as a group of 7 for my partners birthday and can’t complain about anything. Food came out fast and was really good. Service was attentive, friendly and would come again just for that. Kim and Mantas were both great and made our night!

Atmosphere was amazing, food was delicious as usual. Kim was our server, who was exceptional. Full of laughter & entertainment. Mantas was also there to serve and he was happy & delightful.

We were looking for somewhere to take out-of-town friends for a nice lunch, and this was perfect. The grounds and gardens are lovely, as is the pub itself. Friendly staff, good selection of beers & wine, great food - what more could you ask for?!

I have never been served by a more attentive person. I am a celiac and other allergies and Julie could not have been more helpful. I have never been made to feel more welcome and not feel like I’m a nuisance on going out for a meal. Credit to the kitchen my meals was sublime. I would thoroughly recommend eating here and once again Julie thank you for your excellent service and hospitality. First rate.

Stopped for drinks as had a lovely large beer garden with lots of different areas, ended up having food as smelt lovely, was a very good homemade chicken burger and side of onion rings, also staff very friendly and welcoming. would call back if in the area

Visited for outdoor drinks on sunny afternoon. Outdoor bar staff were friendly with excellent service, even fetching a bowl of water for our dog, making big fuss of him and overall lovely visit in August 24.

The restaurant served delicious food, provided exceptional service, and had a delightful staff.

We stopped by just for a quick cider and the food looked so good we decided to have Sunday lunch here. We were not disappointed. The Chateaubriand roast was amazing, and the roast potatoes probably some of the best I have ever tasted. The service was efficient and friendly, thank you Julie! Highly recommend this pub, and what a fab location right on the canal!

Went for lunch yesterday with family and friends… although the pub could do with a spruce up (looking a bit tired and jaded in places) the food was absolutely delicious. Aubergine Lasagne was a big hit with 2 of my guests while my husband had fish n chips which he said had been cooked to perfection! Myself I had a salad with an added extra of goats cheese and while it’s hard to wax lyrical about salad I’m going to as it was amazing ( no idea what the dressing was but it was delicious) and would go again just for that 😊

We had lunch at The Black Horse today and it was really delicious. Our table was served by Julie who greeted us and looked after us. Julie did an exceptional job and I can quite honestly say that it was the best table service I have ever experienced. The food was superb and add on the brilliant service, it made for a wonderful lunch experience. Thank you, you made two old people very happy.

Appalling customer service. Manager is very rude. Staff aren’t fully trained on the menu deals resulting in massive overcharges and a surprisingly high bill. Would not recommend, better off going somewhere else for average food.

Lovely place and decent food. Great desserts, the apple tart is a big standout. A big thanks to the lovely Julie who provided us with outstanding, friendly service.

The food was plain and tasteless. Additionally, the employees do not know how to take orders or answer questions, resulting in misunderstandings. Furthermore, the manager was extremely rude; she placed her finger in a child’s face and raised her voice after being confronted about the bill and the customer service provided. While trying to protect her employee, she claimed that she would never do that, even though she was not present. This place is stealing money. I would not recommend this establishment to anyone. It was the worst experience ever. The worst part is that it was my birthday, and they made it the worst birthday ever. 🤬😡

Lovely garden next to the the canal, ideal to watch the vessels cruise by.

We only popped in for a refreshing drink during a walk along the canal, but found the Black Horse friendly and welcoming. It's table service only, even if you're just having a lemonade. Dogs allowed in the beer garden. The food being served looked great.

30/7/24: Once again visited The Black Horse for a meal with my husband today. Every visit we ask to "tweak" the menu to suit our tastes (husband Diabetic) and the Chef always kindly accommodates us! (Ie husband requested brown bread instead of white Soda bread with his crab starter. For his main he didn't want chips with his fish, so was offered lovely hot greens medley (baby broccoli, green beans etc) and I had a lovely salad but wanted to swap gots cheese for halloumi. All was accepted by the chef. Thank you!!!! As always, the food was exceptional and the service brilliant! We only had room for 2 starters and 2 mains (sadly, pudding could not be squashed in our stomachs! 🤣). But 4 completely clean plates went back to the kitchen. OMG, brilliant!!!! Previous feedback: 23/05/24 Met friends for lunch. I now walk with a stick so my visit today was definitely not as much fun as previous visits. No marked disabled bays in the car park, so straight away had a longer walk than I'd have liked. Then, 2 sets of steps to navigate, one with no handrails at all, the other with very wobbly rails. In-between, very uneven crazy paving flags. Tripped on two occasions between carpark and pub. All in all, no longer a place for me now I have mobility issues and they have little to make life easier for those with such issues. 😞 Previous feedback: Having signed up to the Black Horse App ages ago, I was treated with a voucher for my birthday for a free 3 course meal if someone else with me who paid for the equivalent 3 courses. My husband and I visited last night and had an amazing evening. Our food was served promptly (no long waits) but helpful, cheerful and friendly staff. The food was beautifully presented and outstanding quality. It is the first time I ever remember returning 6 plates (3 each) to the kitchen, completely wiped clean of every morsel!. My husband had a beautiful soup, I had pâté. He then went for Grilled Seabass and I had a Wonderful Steak pie and trimmings. Husband had Blackberry and apple crumble with custard. I had the best sticky toffee pudding ever, with honeycomb ice-cream. Delicious. Compliments to the chef and all the serving team. Can't recommend the pub enough! It's not cheap, but not expensive either. Wonderful food, great service. Lovely birthday treat.
