Pre-booked a table (recommended as can get very busy)for 5 family members and was greeted by a very nice young lady who showed us to our seats and from the get go we had terrific table service, The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, Separate bar area to the restaurant part and a corner for the younger family members to play games, puzzles etc, Proper log fire with chesterfield seats to make a small little quiet Nook, On to the menu now, We did think the menu was minimal but I think this is down to new owners just starting out and feeling their feet at what customers like !? We enquired about the pie of the day and was told it was lamb with mash or pastry the waitress didn't know which? Myself I ordered the monkfish tail scampi, chips in the shape like you could use to dip into a sauce which I found very different but very tasty finished with fresh peas and pea shoots again something I have never tried but really liked them,and believe me I have never tasted anything as nice as the monkfish tail scampi it was absolutely lovely and the potion size was huge, my taste in batter is not huge but that's me, When it came to puddings we were given a little sticky note with a few puddings that was available (unfortunately no prices just a hand written note) We ordered 3 raspberry rolade's with cream but 5 minutes later the chef came out and apologised as he only had 2 rolade's available so we settled for those and a chocolate fudge brownie, Everything was laid out all professional like and top marks to the chef 100%, Thanks to all the team at the blackhorse inn for a great evening

Booked a table 2 months ago for 8 for my son’s birthday, went last night, when ordering off menu they had run out of a few things and we were told they were running food down for Christmas ( it’s the 19th Dec) still the weekend to go 5 days!! Crazy! I was offered a decent replacement though, the pregnant lady we had with us did not get the cost of her food reduced in price though even though the ribs weren’t available? The food itself I’m sad to say was very basic, I had hunters chicken and the chicken was dry had crumbs on like kids frozen chicken, hardly any bbq sauce very disappointing. The people that had steak all said it was chewy? I think the burgers were the best for people? If it wasn’t my son’s birthday I would of said something Definitely better restaurants to eat in! Service was lovely though

Very very quiet for a Tuesday evening. Only 3 other people in the whole pub. Lovely pub but had no atmosphere at all.

If you’re looking for amazing food at a reasonable price then look no further!! We went to the Black Horse Inn today for a roast dinner and when I tell you, this place is not just good food but also amazing service by the staff!!! My son had a diary allergy and I’ve always struggled to find some places at are willing to accommodate his needs so as to make him feel included. We booked the table the week before and when I mentioned my son’s requirements they could not have been more helpful! For a start, the waitress took all my details and said the chef would be more than happy to make my son dairy free Yorkshire puddings (his favourite!) instead of us bringing our own home cooked one. I was impressed by this… but then they went even further!! I got a call from a staff member a few days before our booking to confirm that the chef would be making a batch of dairy free Yorkshire puddings just for my boy… I was impressed by this continuation of service but nothing prepared us for the amazing experience we were yet to receive when we arrived at the pub for our meal! One the day, we arrived, we’re promptly seated and as soon as they knew we’d arrived the head chef came out to speak directly to us and my boy and said that not only had he made a batch of Yorkshire puddings dairy free but we could also take the remaining ones left over home for us to freeze!! When the food came out it was beyond our expectations!!! Every bit was cooked to perfection and seasoned beautifully and my sons dairy free meal was brought out two/three separate plates (and also a separate gravy) so he could stuff his face to his hearts content!! The food (pictured) was so delicious and we could not have asked for more!! We took home all of what we could not eat in a take away bag too! They even served my son with a dairy free ice cream sundae that he was overjoyed with!! Throughout our time there, we felt so looked after by the staff, they were so communicative, friendly and kind and made our day with how much detail and effort they went to include everyone!! All of the food in total for 2 Adults and 2 Children with drinks came to such an amazing price we were genuinely shocked at the price!! In summary (and I know my review is long!) if you’re looking for a new place to visit for a roast dinner on a Sunday (or even other foods on other days) then please book a at table here! You will not be disappointed!! We will definitely be returning!!!

Where has everyone gone? Used to be busy, but since the change of management, it feels like a very different place. The pint I had was off, smelt wrong immediately, and totally lifeless, so I gave it back. No refund, no apology, and charged for the replacement. I won't be back in a hurry. It's such a shame as I used to go a couple of times a week 😪 for years.

Had a great Sunday out and came here for a quick drink. Mood changed when the misery with pink hair served us. No smile or customer service.

Limited lunch time menu. We ordered food for a business lunch and were then reapproached a few minutes later being told our selection was not available as there was a big party due in later that day and the chef was saving food for them. We were guided to select something from the wrap part of the menu. It appeared there was some break down in communication/lack of team work between the chef and the waitering staff on what food options were available.

This place is so good. The food was AMAZING. And the chef (sorry can't remember her name), but she came out and spoke to us and made my wife and mother inlaw a vegan meal, and a barman was really helpful I'm definitely going back to this place.

Brilliant meal last night at Black horse for four of us. Also Gab cooked for us last week and that was lovely too. Blimey why do they need you to write an essay.

Went for an early lunch.First impressions were very good. Clean tidy very pleasant restaurant. Food on the whole was very good except a jacket potato which came out stone cold and icy and had to go back. A replacement meal was given of something different which was very nice and more expensive but only charged for the value of the potato in way of an apology. They also had run out of milk so we couldn't have coffees. As this was at opening time not very good really. The waiter was very nice and the evening menu looks good so may give it another go and hope they step up a bit.

Great food . Well worth a visit

Went for a couple of drinks at 8pm. Was told shortly after 9pm that the bar was closed despite no call for last orders. The pub then closed shortly after 9.30pm not matching the times on their website. Staff were overall lazy and clearly had better things to do then work. Highly recommend avoiding this place. There are far better options in Exeter and East Devon.

Lovely meal! Food was excellent - the chips are some of the best we've ever had. Service was polite and attentive. Only have a photo of my partner's steak wrap (steak cooked medium rare, which was great!) because I didn’t wait to take a photo of my fish and chips before digging in. Highly recommend.

The new management and team have done wonders with The Black Horse! I have eaten a here a couple of times now with my family and have a not been disappointed! The chefs certainly deserve amazing credit with the incredible food they send out, all the food that went past me looked incredible! Burgers are great and will definitely leave you feeling full for a great price! My next visit was in a Sunday where I had one of the best roast dinners! Great quality meat and all the trimmings! The team are welcoming and friendly! I look forward to future visits to The Black Horse!

We have visited the Black Horse several times as a family (mum, dad and two teenage daughters) and each time we have tried something different to eat. The food is very tasty, home cooked and generous portions. Today as it is Sunday we opted for the Sunday lunches and we weren't disappointed at all. A choice of 2 or 3 meats which were all cooked to perfection. All in all every time has been a wonderful experience and the staff are welcoming and lovely. We'll definitely keep coming back. 10/10 - many thanks all.

Not great to be honest The coffees were not hot. We had open sandwiches with chips - that were not chips - they were frozen potato crispies that were extremely fatty and not enjoyable at all Why must pubs of this size use frozen potatoes and not fresh ones? I used to run a pub and did the cooking and always made fresh chips There is no excuse I was very disappointed

We drive past this pub every day and though give it a go, and was meet by a guy at the bar when we walked in got given a table to sit at was given menus , not much choice! The drinks got ordered and the came the beer was not great was very lifeless, so took it back they said that the gas gas gone, bought a different pint over just looked like it was topped up from the other pint that went back!! Had the meal was good said served with chips and it was french fries so disappointed they never stay hot!! The guy that bought the food over didn't have a clue what he was doing didn't speak at all and didn't really seemed good with people ! I had to ask for sauces and he should of been the one to ask us! Went to pay the lady overcharged us with other drinks on are table that we didn't have no idea what that was about because they know we only had one drink it wasn't even busy for a Saturday night!! Could do with a gammon or something on the menu needs a rethink to me !! The toilets where not that clean the windows where covered in like old food or something and smelt a bit horrible!

Most meals were ok. Feels like they rushed to open too quick. Should have delayed and got it right. 3 reds & 3 whites @ £28 a bottle. 👎 Menu needs work. Ice cream list non-adventurous but tasty. Look forward to seeing them after they settle in more.

A group of six of us who live in the neighbourhood went for dinner to the “under new management” Black Horse and was very disappointed. The food was excellent but there was no wine list to choose from, you had to order from the bar not the waiter. The Sauvignon Blanc was way over priced at £28.95 a bottle. The main course only offered a salad as gluten free. After so many different managers in the last few years we thought there would be an improvement, but sadly not.

Pot luck found layby 5 min walk from this pub, ribeye steak cooked to perfection, monkfish scampi, so delicious, staff so friendly and helpful and polite, perfect end to a long day trucking. If in this area again we would definitely be returning. What a treat.

Had a spot lunch with my daughter food was beautiful the gents that served us was polite and friendly and the food was amazing I had philly cheese wrap and my daughter had the dirty fries. Amazing will recommend to my friends and family. We will return

On arrival, the reservation by telephone (2 hours before) had not been recorded. Nevertheless, good little restaurant. We tried the crab macaroni cheese. Very good, good quantity and moderate prices overall. The bar could be more stocked with local (or UK) products in terms of beers and Gin (and serve the gin with ice cubes!).

Nice outdoor sitting space to have a few beers with friends. Fast service, though the place wasn't really busy. Enjoyed my drink.

The Guinness was served in an inappropriate glass and the two-pour method was not followed, which is regrettable given the quality of the 6X.

First time here. Lovely pub with a nice atmosphere. I had chilli chicken wrap with fries. My wife had a chicken burger with fries. I only done 4 stars only because the chicken in both the wrap and burger were over cooked, which is a shame because everything else was lovely, chips lovely and the onion ring was perfect. The staff were great and friendly.

Dog friendly = Happy Dog. Friendly staff and locals. Well kept ale. I'll be back for a pit stop dog walk pint in the near future! :)

An absolute disgrace! Went for Easter lunch and I have never been so disappointed with a Sunday roast. It was advertised as half a roast chicken and it was barely a leg and the beef was from a packet you buy from a supermarket for sandwiches. The potatoes were rock hard and tasted like they had been reheated numerous times, I believe it was stuffing but it resembled a golf ball, the yorkshire pudding was an undercooked pancake and the gravy was like water. This was politely fed back to the staff who showed no concern and very little interest. I think it's safe to say we will not be returning.

1/4 full on Easter Sunday, took 3 hours 45 mins for 3 course despite preordering. Roast was pretty horrific! Starter and Desert were ok. Kitchen staff need to go. This place hasn’t changed since I last went in 6 years ago. If it’s cheap food you seek then it’s probably ok.

Went for Sunday lunch and would not recommend. The roast was poor, the only highlight was the cauliflower cheese but the dessert was even worse. Never asked by the waitress how the food was but asked if we had finished our meal while my daughter was still eating. Would have stayed for another drink and to sit and chat but felt rushed away even though it was not at all busy.

Absolutely do not recommend. Went out for a roast to this place the potato's were rock hard - beef and turkey was horrible. Nothing tasted fresh. Waitress never asked how the food was... asked for the bill, which never came. Complained to the manager who said 20% off was all the till would allow? Absolute embarrassment of a show. Worst roast I have ever had !

An absolutely terrible meal! The food wasn't great tbh my children could have done better. we had our Christmas party there for SWAST and some of it was under cooked and some so over cooked you couldn't tell what it was.... The gravy was so salty it ruined everything. The sea bass meal I had was awful.... And all they said was no one else said it was bad 😂😂😂

Found this place for a bite to eat after shopping, found the staff lovely great service and food was amazing , will plan to go there again on next trip from Taunton

After a lot of stress traveling to and from Guernsey we needed a drink while waiting for our lift home. Dartmoor Jail Ale was on and very well kept. My partner had Moretti. A tenner a round so not expensive but also not cheap. Overall it's good. Glad we came. We didn't stay for food so can't comment on that but portions looked good from what we saw of other people eating. 5 minutes drive from Exeter airport.

I’ve recently moved into Tithebarn and thought I would try the new local. Despite my dietary requirements they were able to cater for me and the food was absolutely great. To top it of leeanne and the team were incredibly welcoming! Will definitely be coming back.

Was recommended by a friend in Exeter, we came down from Somerset... I must say excellent value for money, food was amazing... in our group we had starters and pudding, garlic mushrooms for starters and maim was either steak, liver and onions, or fish and chips... all were cooked to perfection.. dessert was roulade and ice cream... generally I will only have one course, but the offer was 3 course meal for £24 or 2 course for £20.., best eat out I have had in a long time.., service was amazing, checking on us at every course, Leanne the manager made sure our needs were met... atmosphere and warmth made a special importance too... we are looking forward to trying again for a Sunday roast... try it I would tick boxes for everything... best experience in a long time and I eat out regularly.

We held a recent birthday party at the Black Horse. Leanne the manager was very helpful and very well organised. It was a great evening and enjoyed by everyone. Great venue well done to everyone involved.

We held a wake in the summer of 2023 at the Black Horse Inn, to which about 60 people came and the whole day went very well. As a direct result, we also held our 30th wedding anniversary there in early September and we all enjoyed a fantastic time from start to finish. As was the case with the wake, we spoke with Leanne the manager beforehand, who organised everything for us to perfection. It was the hottest day of the year, so a lot of people spilled outside and all the many children present enjoyed themselves just as much as we adults did. The pub is big, with plenty of seating for everyone throughout, while the food we ordered was on time and beyond superb. The staff are all absolutely great, doggies are welcome and the pub has a warm, inviting atmosphere, so we couldn't be happier. I thoroughly recommend holding any and all events here, while there's also a dedicated function room if any guests require privacy.

Stopped off on the way travelling down to Cornwall. Service was fantastic and food enjoyable. We phoned up about an hour before we arrived and they were able to fit the 5 of us in. Food portions were a good size. We did not leave hungry. Service was speedy when they heard we had to still travel on to our final destination which we were grateful for.

Fab girls night out totally ruined by a massive fight between an older drunk dude and another. Really violent with lots of big dudes screaming trying to separate. We got out of there! You guys should make sure the vibe is safe & doesn't get ruined for your customers. There was a child present at the pub too! And Women should feel safe going out to enjoy themselves!!! Will not be bringing the kids, that's for sure. Handle your drunk male clientele!!!

Ideally located for anyone on an afternoon flight out of Exeter airport. Power and WiFi for business needs in a friendly and light atmosphere. The special today was Hunters chicken a light refreshing preflight lunch. Followed by real coffee. Great job The Black Horse!

I’ve always enjoyed the food here, over the past couple of years I’ve eaten here maybe 6 times? It’s always been good quality pub food. Friendly atmosphere, and overall it is very good. Only issue we had is accidental gluten contamination, either that or wrong starter sent from kitchen. This resulted in my girlfriend becoming very very sick. I did call to discuss this, and was promised a phone call back from the owner/chef. This never happened, which is disappointing. I’ll be back. Personally I love the food here, but this was a shame

Okay definitely not as good as it was our food showed no difference between the lite bite portion and the normal size and the staff seemed to disappear when I would have questioned that.

Really amazing food and very nice atmosphere.

Our visit this time was for the wake of my brother-in-law. He and my sister visited many times as it was their local. The staff are great and the pub is clean and tidy. The toilets are also a credit to the place. There were about 140 of us all told, plus the pub regulars. Plenty of room for us all. Lovely place.

Had a lovely evening here last night ! Ordered the creamy garlic mushrooms as a starter, they were divine. Scampy & chips as a main. It was so tasty even the chips were cooked to perfection... Golden, crispy coating and fluffy on the inside! The other half had fish and chips, I pinched some of his mushy peas which were well seasoned and minty. Staff were lovely, fast service and the whole pub felt clean and friendly. Coming back tomorrow 😅

Very disappointed, not as good as it used to be, food is mediocre. For some reason they now have stuffed toys sat around one of the tables, no idea why. Looks tacky.

I have on a few occasions now walked to this pub from my home a couple of miles away and every time the food has been very good and the service professional and friendly. The food is always good and there is a wide selection on the menu. Yesterday I had the lunchtime special of a tandoori chicken burger which was very inventive and so very tasty. There is clearly a innovative approach to some of the menu ideas which is great. There is also a good selection of drinks and one of my person favourites is a bottle of Swordfish Ale very tasty!

Our 4th visit, and will sadly be our last. The food here is, for the most part, very nice! Good value, flavoursome, and decent portion sizes. However, the service is the slowest I've EVER experienced, every single visit. Tonight was the final nail in the coffin. After waiting over an hour, in a half empty restaurant, the food arrived with components missing, my burger bun was anemic bordering on raw and very chewy, and the onion ring was somehow overcooked and undercooked simultaneously. So disappointed, but we were way too hungry by this point to press too much about it. So we scrapped buying dessert, left, and we won't bother going back again. Shame really, as the food had never been an issue until tonight, only ever the slow service, and the pub itself is pleasant with plenty of parking.

You know what it's been a very long time since I had a decent chicken burger and I have to admit I'm very fussy about what I eat, and the chicken burger I had not only was it a massive portion but it was absolutely delicious. That waiter and waitress that served us was excellent and after they came to collect our plates all 7 of them was clean I will definitely be going out of my way to eat here thank you.
