We popped in here on the off chance we could get a table on a Sunday lunchtime. Incredibly we were which was an absolute stroke of luck as the food was incredible! We are big roast dinner fans so are always sceptical about the quality of pub lunches but we needn't worry. The beef was cooked to perfection and my friend asked for hers to be cooked a while longer and they did this without issue and the meat kept it's tenderness. The vegetables were delicious and my only criticism is that there weren't enough for me. We are Northern so asked for more gravy and were delivered two jug fulls of a flavourful gravy. We wouldn't normally pay £24 for a roast but we both agreed this was definitely value for money. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and the atmosphere of the pub was fantastic. We will return here any time we're in the area.

Genuinely the kindest people I've ever met. My dad's car broke down outside the pub and they've been nothing more than accomodating. Came up to collect the car after my dad had to return to Scotland via hire car. The food is impeccable, the velouté is nothing short of delightful. The burgers rated by my boyfriend and his dad were phenomenal. Drinks are fresh and delicious and the staff are nothing short of wonderful to meet. They are welcoming, warm, patient and friendly. Abby(ie) is a stellar manager and her staff are great. The kitchen waited on us also for us ratchet strapping the car onto the trailer and almost met their cut off point for the kitchen closing just to accommodate us. If you need some food, some good chat and some delicious food it's the place for you. The prices might be worrisome but the experience with these people is worth it. Thank you again.

Learn from our mistake and ask to see the wine menu before you order. Bottle of pinot grigio rose at Portmeirion fine dining restaurant £28.50, at the Chequers £34.00! On the bill it said it was a Cote de Provence which I would happily pay £34.00 for if I'd ordered it. Did query it but was told that though said it it was a cote du Provence it was the correct price for the pinot grigio rose. We enjoyed our food though it was slightly overpriced for what we got. It was a case of spot the shavings of goats cheese on the special starter, which was also underwhelming in terms of flavour. The chicken pie itself was delicious but it was a very dry plate of food and really needed a little jug of gravy to pour over the mashed potato and veg. The crispy gnocchi isn't gnocchi, more like mini potato croquettes however, it was delicious. The atmosphere in the pub was good and overall so was the service.

I ordered a scallop and mussel starter. Quite expensive but I love scallops and mussels. Unfortunately whilst the scallops were delicious, the mussels were non existent. When I queried this the waitress said the chef had put mussel sauce on the scallops. Well a) there was no sauce on the scallops and b) the menu said creamy mussels not creamy mussel sauce. When queried with the owner she said they would take it off the menu. I was grateful that she didn't charge me for my starter. However I would have preferred to pay and get what I was promised. My husband's chicken terrine was ok but barely more than a mouthful. The roast dinner was ok. Nothing special. The selection of seasonal veg turned out to be a dessertspoonful of cabbage. Very poor. We won't be returning. UPDATE: Today I see the pub have replied to my review. I did not lie. The menu said scallop and creamy mussels. Not scallops and creamy mussel sauce and no there was no mussel sauce. Why say she would remove it from the menu if I was incorrect. And yes I did eat the starter I said the scallops were delicious so why wouldn't I eat it. There were no leeks or kale on the dessertspoon of cabbage and the roasted carrot and parsnip were listed on menu not part of selection of seasonal veg. I am dumbfounded that the owner has lied saying we were offered a complimentary drink. Thst most certainly wasnt us. Lying about customers is not the way forward in my opinion.

The couple who have just taken over The Chequers are wonderful! We turned up on Sunday eve hoping to break our long drive with a drink and park up in our van - but found it closed. (At present closed Sunday evenings through to midday Wednesday). We live locally and went because we had been told about the new Menu. The new owners have given the place a lick of paint but otherwise it is still the familiar Fullers pub. The food for dinner is a much more gastro fare now and really good. We had both the Scallop and the Beetroot starters, followed by Gnocchi and the Pork Belly for mains and ate so well we had to share the chocolate delice pudding!. A really delicious meal, in this lovely country pub. We really liked what the new 'owners' are trying to do and would recommend as the chefs obviously know how to cook. The chatty staff mentioned they are doing a sort of tapas / lite bight lunch menu as well - will pop in to try at some point.

Been to this pub many times over the last few months, but visited today as new management had taken over. How disappointing!!! Shown to table & was left wasn't even asked if we wanted a drink & for a pub doing Sunday lunch there was no aroma of a roast being cooked. When we eventually ordered, we ordered 2 beef roasts. Table of 4 had their food just before us and they all complained that the food was luke warm & ours came out exactly same....luke warm. When we all complained the lady who I assume was new manager blamed it on the doors being open & a breeze blowing through & this is why the food was not hot! Definitely won't be going back!!

Well had been going here for a while with the old owners running it so thought we would try this again when it reopened , booked by phone for table of two as Web site says its closed but knew it was open anyhow , 1 person serving drinks behind the bar took 5 mins before we were spoken to explained we had booked a table and shown to our table where upon were given a bottle of water not asked if we would like a drink from the bar , took another 15 minutes before they returned and asked if we were ready to order food and drinks which we did as it being a Sunday thought make it simple were both have roast beef dinner and vegetables, approximately 20 min later people next to us were moaning ,then our food turned up both plates full of food including the veg and meat was stone cold on our table also the table next to us food was cold , they said it was due to the front door of the pub being open and a draught going straight through into the kitchen, as I've sat at many place in the pub and had lots of meals there before and never had a problem with food before there including a party of over 20 people, if you going there it's expensive £5 for a sausage roll £22 for roast beef for this I would like food to be hot when it arrives at the table , yes they did offer us a free drink if we stayed and they tired again but time was not on our side ps not sure when you cooked the food as there was no smell of food coming from the kitchen only thing we could hear was cook shouting food was ready going to be awhile before I venture back and that will probably only be for a drink

Lovely, locally-run coffee shop with great cakes & top bike service! Friendly staff, tables inside and out and easy parking if you’re driving. Highly recommend!

Overpriced and over cooked Tight starter portion and that 1 scallop NOT"scallops"was overdone And the roast wasn't much improvement Really disappointing for my guests too Shame as the setting is good just not any value for money and the atmosphere wasn't to warm for a quiet Sunday evening

Absolutely brilliant dining experience here. Just finished shopping from Bicester. If you’re hungry *READ THIS* Walked in and sat at a table immediately, the staff were friendly, attentive and great hosts. Could clearly see that they’re proud to work here. Food Everything was cooked to perfection, meat flavourful, juicy and tender. Rice and salad was also seasoned so well, full of flavour. Salad had a sweet sauce drizzled ontop which was fantastic. Everything was made in house and tasted so fresh, I was a massive fan of their tomato dip! Even took some home. Baklava was not overly sweet, pastry flaky and fresh, very light. Filling was full and nutty, would like more pistachio flavour (preference) but overall one of the better I’ve tasted. Houmous and lamb was amazing for a starter, I was impressed straight away! Portion I’m currently bulking lol this was plenty of food for one person, meat was given generously with no skimping anywhere. Service Top notch, we weren’t waiting at any point to order, our empty plates picked up soon, “how is the food?”…deserts options given. This wasn’t rushed either they gave ample time between meals to attend to us. No long periods of waiting. For starters we’d 100% recommend the lamb houmous. Mains - I had the mix grill, my partner had chicken and lamb skewers. Desert - Please go for the baklava and ice cream. Not too sweet, just right 1 starter 2 mains 1 desert 1 coffee 1 coke Total was £80 with inc service charge which i was more than happy to pay. Like to give a mention to Nick who looked after us really well 👍
