The Chequers in Stevenage

We came to stevenage on a work trip from Norfolk, was lovely to see Woodfordes brewery on the bar! We were made to feel so welcome! The locals and the landlords were all very chatty and had a lot of banta, which made our night so much better! We went to a few pubs on the highstreet in old town but this was only one we would return to, in fact, we did, twice is one night! Thank you Lauren and Martin, we will be back

Recently under new management, the Chequers has a lovely friendly vibe. Beer is good and Frank the dog is very welcome. We wish the new proprietors the best of luck!

Such a lovely pub! The staff are super friendly and I had a wonderful birthday night! Also did the quiz night and that was a brilliant atmosphere! Highly recommend

11/08/23 the two staff tending the bar were so polite and welcoming. Sometimes, I've felt unwelcome at the chequers, I do really like the pub regardless. But, the bar staff tonight have definitely made me feel more welcome than I did in the past.

Since the new management have taken over you have been able to tell a massive decrease of atmosphere in here. Saturday night they were closed by 9:30 however states on google open until 12pm. The new lady behind the bar doesn't seem at all interested in her job and the place is filthy. I will not be returning which is a shame as I loved this pub.

Visited the area recently and found this pub fantastic. I heard from the locals that it was recently taken over. It was a pleasant experience and the staff member on the bar was very friendly and welcoming. I would happily return here again. And it was lovely to meet Bob the little Labrador puppy.

Great range of beers, bar staff are lovely and the new manager Lauren is keen to get good beers on which is always a fantastic sign. Dog friendly and nice fire x

The awful treatment with staff has disgusted me, they will not be having any of my money. Forcing management out of their home within 24 hours is disgusting. Letting go of staff that have worked there for no reason, is unacceptable. Saying how they don’t have enough hours for them to work yet hire multiple new staff. You make me sick. Treat staff correctly and business thrives.

We decided to eat at the Chequers last night as its our local. Not busy got a table. Ordered food then after a long while was told they had run out of a few things. Re ordered didn't get what we requested. Waitress took one dish off the bill which left it at 52.00. Gave her £60.00 waited for change never came. Asked for change which I'm guessing was the manager on last night. She went to the till printed off a receipt which was showing £61 said we were not entitled to the change in fact we owed her and to forget about the rest as it came out of her pocket. RUDE beyond belief!!! Dreadful experience.

Some good food, had a good laugh with the staff.

Super couple of beers again. Really like it in here, they care about what they do.

Good pub with several cask ales and craft beers and friendly service. Furnishings a bit tatty but will certainly visit again.

Not tried food so unfair to judge but always a good atmosphere and service cannot be faulted, even during busy periods.

The pub has evolved and changed since my father started drinking here 50 years ago but what you have today is a welcoming, friendly pub that focuses on beer which they have a great range of. Unlike some pubs that close their doors of a weekday afternoon (The George in Hitchin, I'm looking at you!), the Chequers dutifuly keeps the beer flowing, served with a smile. My only complaint would be the pop music on the radio. But definitely go here.

Beer is the main attraction! Seriously, they have a great, ever changing range of beers and ales. They pub itself is reasonably comfortable and welcoming, but did I mention the beer...

It used to have a great lamb shank...hope it is back for winter new one, nice wagon with pizza on the back! perfect to chill out after work

It's been a fair few years since I've been in the Chequers and I must say I really good time with my friends, good atmosphere, friendly staff and to top it of with free pizza.

A wonderful pub with a vast array of very well kept cask ales & felt very welcome by both staff and locals. Highly recommended.

Helpful and friendly bar staff. A relatively quiet and calm location away from the bustle of most of the Old Town. Beer was kept well. Will visit again.

Best "proper pub" in Stevenage. Dont be fooled by GK signage, very good selection of less well known brews including some dark ales

Really good selection of ales, and Asahi on tap. Can be difficult to find seating when it's really busy, but a fair amount of seating outside too.

Used to be a nice friendly atmosphere. Change of management appears to have resulted in different staff and loud modern music. Update:- visited recently and seems to have the old vibe back which is good

Great beers, great food, and even great staff it's my home from home always get looked after in the chequers from Christmas day lunch to Sunday and lunch time and evening meals.Since new land persons no food now just like any other pub.

What a hidden (ignored?) gem. Whist my wife ran the Tescos parking gauntlett, I wandered over the bridge into the Old Town. Despite driving around the area on an almost daily basis, I'd forgotten The Chequers existed, and it was on the way to try some other pubs that I spotted it and thought: Why not? And why not indeed? What a fantastic, reasonably priced establishment with a wide range of beers. I tried the excellent Mild, a rare treat, and only hope that the pubs "off the beaten track" location doesn't threaten it's future. After I had been summoned to enjoy (?) the delights of Stevenage, I wangled a revisit in order to further sample the wares on offer. Much busier upon my return, the Porter and Stout were in superb form and very reasonably priced. All too soon I received the call that the Old Lady had negotiated Tescos car park and was waiting outside. Shame. Kindred spirits, Pete and Robin were more than willing to lead me astray. Next time, I hope.

One of the few pubs in Stevenage with a good choice of ales. There qas a choice of 8 when i visited.

Lovely pub, serving a great range of real ales.

Polite barman. Many various pale ales on from the bigger craft breweries. I had a 4XT session amber which was exactly as it should be. Moved next door to The Marquis of Lorne.

Brilliant Pub, great barman poured a perfect pint and helped with a large selection of gin, landlady is quite nice too

Lovely place. Nice friendly staff with a beautiful spaniel that I guess lives at the pub. Good selection of beers. No football, darts and pool if this is what you are looking for. Just a good solid pub.

Great ‘old Skool’ pub in Stevenage. Real East end style. No nonsense British pub! Definitely be there every Friday from now till end of decade.

Came here as a group of 6. Online booking was simple and our table was there. Even on a Tuesday evening it was almost full so I recommend booking! Food was delicious and look forward to returning to try everything on the menu!

What a pleasure to visit, even in these unusual times. Service was excellent, food is gorgeous and location is spacious and relaxing. Menu prices are on the higher side, but as they say, you get what you pay for! We'll definitely be back!
