The Clarence in Oldham

Called in after a walk at Dovestones. Glad we did. A lovely place with nice staff. Clean and the food looked lovely. Looking forward to a return visit and will sample some of the nice Looking food.

I came back last night with my boyfriend after a long trek …. We both were feeling really cold and tired … the person who waited on us was a tall lady with glasses ( sorry , forgot to ask her name ) she was really really kind to us… the food was good , we had hot chocolate, chicken bites , fish and chips and rump steak . It was all served hot , tasted good!!! I would definitely recommend this place ….

Very much enjoyed going for food at the clearance! We didn’t manage to park in the car park bc it was full but you can park on the road right next to it. We had the 3 for 15 starters and a steak sandwich. All the food was tasty and served piping hot. Truffle tater tots didn’t taste like they had any truffle on. Atmosphere was very cosy and busy with a lot of dogs and walkers coming in. Would recommend booking in advance as does get busy! Staff were lovely but did have to chase after them a few times to order and to ask the same thing again (also understandable considering they were busy).

Food nice, atmosphere was good, but I was with a group of good friends.

Xmas Dinner very poor, waited hours in between courses, starter was shop bought pate stale toast, Xmas Dinner was raw veg part of it you could not eat and very small portion, desert trifle was uneatable, never again

Love the food, been for steak night the past 3 weeks and it was delicious every time. Fish & chips this week - again delicious. Also had the cheesecake (scrummy) and partner had sticky toffee pud which he said was really nice. Service and staff are all lovely and welcoming - highly recommended all round

Lovely pub to go after a walk. Very reasonable light lunch menu and the food was good, particularly the cheese and onion pie. Nice children's menu. We'll be coming back. Only improvement would be a. Baby change in the men's loo!

Had a steak it was like butter melting in my mouth. I've never had a steak as good anywhere

Nice pub and area, friendly wait staff. Ordered 2 Sunday dinners however the ham one only came with 2 very small pieces of ham and the other came with beef that was completely inedible. Was sloppy and couldn’t be cut through or chewed. The veg and potato’s were really hard and tasteless. No one came to check on us and we had waited a while to be served and for our food to come so we carried on eating what we could. Told the waitress who then said she would knock the drinks off which was only a tap water and an orange juice, didn’t want to argue with her as wasn’t her fault so just paid for the food full price. Wouldn’t come back.

The second time here and to be quite frankly the steak is not the best. Possibly the worst I’ve had. For both times it tasted burnt and was burnt due to the grill. Which I could assume grill doesn’t get cleaned often. My partner ordered same thing as me, only had a bite to taste it and he said to the manager he couldn’t eat it. Manager said if he orders another meal he would have to pay for the steak even though he only had a bite to taste it and couldn’t eat. Considering he has a heart condition it’s impossible for him to eat the steak burnt. I on the other hand unfortunately had to eat my stake up to a certain point where then my mouth starting brining with sour from the taste of the grill. Quick advise, if you do go there I’d advise to get anything other than the steak or asked for stake to be fried instead of grill. For the restaurant a quick tip please start cleaning your grills often. Because I’ve been to multiple restaurants where they grill steak and it doesn’t taste like that.

Went today for a pub lunch after a walk at doverstones with my family and my 2 dogs. The food was amazing so lovely. Especially the desserts. I got the chocolate and hazelnut gnocchi and they were lovely. My mum got a biscoff cheesecake with pouring cream. I had seen picture of the cheese and onion pie but the photos dont do it justice. They have water bowls available for your doggies. They have a nice outside place to eat. They service was lovely everyone was really nice.

Myself and a friend stopped in here after a walk up to the trinnacle on saddleworth moor close by. Great food and great service.

The first time I came by was 2 yrs ago, had some food and I was not happy with my steak, I asked for medium rare but it was too chewy for me. The other dishes of my family were nice. This week we came back but just for some drinks. It is nice and cosy pub. Staffs are super friendly. The location is close to Dovestone. So after a long walk, it is absolutely good place for rest, food and drink.

Didn't eat but we had beer the timothy Taylor boltmaker was excellent and well kept and the marsden's pedigree was similarly well kept both beers where superb at a reasonable price definitely the best pub in the area

Had a family Birthday lunch here a couple of days ago the choice of food was good children's menu as well plenty of choice. The food was first class as I am fussy everything was served piping hot we all had something different and everybody loved it . The staff were all super efficient and pleasant . A great day was had by all and I can't thank them enough 5 stars from us all !!

Stumbled upon this dog friendly pub yesterday. Menu not huge but food was very good. Indoor and outdoor seating. Service very good. Very friendly staff

Lovely delicious home cooked food. Rag pudding was superb. Very generous portions. Service super fast and super efficient. Will definitely return when visiting dovestones.

Popped in here for some lunch while out on a drive. Was greeted nicely by the staff, and the service was nice and quick while also being thorough. I ordered the steak, while a little tough it was cooked perfectly to how i had ordered it, thr chips alongside were just amazing and the right portion size for the meal. The salad and mushrooms that came with it were also really nice and refreshing. The star of the meal howevrr is the peppercorn sauce i ordered with the steak. It was absolutely delicious. The atmosphere waz great a lovely meal out for a nice day, great location with the dovestone reservoir just up the road, and short drive into the peak district. If im in the area again, I will more than likely stop for food here, too.

Excellent meal would recommend for a family .went with the recommended pudding and chips an peas was delicious.

Great venue close to Dovestone reservoir and a good reward for our walk! Cozy and warm surroundings, friendly staff who despite being very busy were quick and on the ball. I enjoyed a delicious pork roast Sunday lunch and my partner rated the rag pudding highly. Can recommend and would advise booking in advance on weekends.

Had a drink in The Clarance Pub on a sunday early evening & it was pretty busy. It was a pleasant atmosphere and the pub seems a good place to chill out.

Dropped in after a Dovestones walk on Sunday. No inside tables at 3pm. The pub was bustling. Reservations necessary. Think on. Service was welcoming and friendly. Prices reasonable. No reason not to come back if in the area again.

Found this place after a hike from Dovestone reservoir up to the Trinnacle as it was the closest pub to the car park. What a great find, great service from friendly staff and the food was also very good.

Food is spot on here! Top quality homemade grub 👌🏻 The place offers a wide range of drinks on tap! Right next a real beauty spot as well, Dovestone Reservoir.

Headed to The Clarence after a Sunday walk round Dowvestone Reservoir. Fantastic service and food! The team at The Clarence are friendly, helpful and attentive. Highly recommend!

Walked in for first time in a long time. BUZZING! Warm and inviting and ready for Xmas. Mine host Lewis was on form and made us feel welcome. Me, my wife, my daughter and granddaughter. Roast beef dinner x 2 ... excellent Child meal free. Cheese and onion pie as good as it gets. The servers were pleasant and helpful. Nothing to moan about wine beer food for 4 £80. They deserved their tip! Will be going again to see if it was a fluke....🤔

Superb !!!!! 6 of us ate and drank here Friday night and couldn't fault it. Service ace. Food ace. Atmosphere ace. No hint of tension. All good. If you have the pleasure of being served by Lewis then I promise you, you will be looked after by a young man that has total control. Just chill and let them look after you. Highly recommended 👌

For the price..good value for money...and the food's good...plus quite a nice pub. we sometimes go for a drink Sunday afternoon.

We were stated quickly and placed our orders. Food took a while to arrive and I found the fish and chips quite greasy and fish was not fresh. Service was good.

Popped in for a light lunch, not too busy and very welcoming. Food was good.

I don't often leave reviews, but the customer service we received today was very disappointing. Our first issue arose when we went to order food at the bar, as we were told we couldn't order as there was a "backlog" (this is despite us checking availability before we sat down and the pub garden being empty). Bizarrely we were told to come back to order in 2 minutes. We didn't understand what difference two minutes would make, but we politely waited around until we were allowed to order food. Disappointingly the food then took almost an hour to arrive and it was initially delivered to the wrong table (this is despite us giving a table number on the order). I had to shout the waiter to bring it to us. The waiter then said he would return with cutlery, but after waiting 10 minutes and our food getting cold, I had to look for him and fetch it myself as he had forgotten. After finishing our meals we returned to the bar to order our desserts only to be told again we couldn't order food due to a backlog. This is despite the fact we had already paid for our second course. With no idea when we would actually be permitted to order and no idea of how long the wait could be once ordered, we decided to leave with a refund for our desserts. I feel most of the issues we experienced could easily have been avoided if our orders had been processed normally and our expectations for wait times had been managed like most establishments. Overall the food was nice, but nothing spectacular. Considering my main meal cost £17 I expected better, but the beef was nice. The beer garden to the rear would also benefit from some maintenance, it look rather scruffy with litter and dead plants in pots and borders.

Went today for lunch...it was super busy and seemed short staffed. The guy who I think is the duty manager was fab but the rest if the staff seemed quite inexperienced, especially the staff member behind the bar...at 1 stage it was 3 deep at the bar and she simply couldn't cope!....when the food finally arrived my "burger wonderland" was delicious...however my hubby had a rib eye steak which was really disappointing! Over 3/4's of the steak was gristle and inedible ☹ the duty manager immediately removed it from the bill so happy with the outcome and his professional approach to the problem! Will try you again at a less busy time as have been lots of times before and its always been great....hope today was just a blip!

Food is spot on. When it’s really busy you may have to wait a little while but it’s definitely worth the wait. Eaten there twice over the last two weeks and both times had great food. Catch of the day was spectacular. Roast beef Sunday lunch was outstanding. Staff were very friendly and very apologetic we had to wait to be seated. Well done guys

Excellent food served by some of the nicest staff around. We just had a family meal for 22 of us and we all had a great time.

Been remodeled recently the outside is much better now but I've not tried the food yet I should imagine it will be similar to before which was nice homemade food

If you could do a minus star for food I would. We waited an hour for our starters which was a disappointment to say the least, the nachos seemed microwaved the “melted cheese” was like plastic, not even a knife would cut through had better ones at the cinema which says it all, mussels that were so dry and tasted burnt (who is cooking this food). Fast forward another hour later and the mains arrived with no apology for the wait or update on the food. We ordered 4 rare-medium sirloin steaks all of which were well done plus a sad portion of 5 chips on the side (what’s even the point) and one gammon that was tougher than an old boot. We sent everything back of course and only got the mains taken off the bill. Not one to moan but it was literally so terrible. After looking forward to taking out our sick Grandmother it has been such a waste of an evening which is the most annoying thing. Will not be returning and would advise The Clarence to get a new chef and train their waiting staff better 🙏

Had lunch here today the food was excellent, all fresh & home cooked, well worth the money, would definately eat here again.

It was very quiet went we arrived. The food was awful, the meatballs were hard and extremely dry almost as if they had microwaved them then served it up, the chips were also hard, so much so that when you tapped them on the table they didn't break, to be fair they did deduct one meal from the bill. But I will definitely not be going back here, I will not be giving them a second chance. I was really really disappointed and had to pick up a chippy when I got home.

Lovely little pub very close to Dovestone resivour perfect for drinks and food following your hike. It has a lovely little beer garden for when the weather is lovely.

Visited lunch time Monday 4th Septmber. The young guy serving was very polite and efficient, the location of the pub is in a beautiful area but parking is a huge problem and on road parking fills up fast too The food was average, it wasn't bad but nothing to rave about. I would visit again if I was in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way too come here. The wait is the biggest downfall. It was an over hour from ordering before getting food and the place wasn't even busy. It's good for a drink after walking the dog as its dog friendly. Cute little pub, worth a bite to eat just expect to wait for it

Great sunday roast after a big walk at dovestone. We had the cheese and onion pie which was delicious. Quite probably one of the best I've had (I'm a veggie so it's always the option haha) we were sat at table 10 served by Izzy who was great. Polite, hospitable, knowledgeable about the food and also did a 'check back' (which is something I often find missing in restaurants at the moment but in my opinion really makes a difference). Would recommend recommend got the hungry hiker!

Great home cooked food, menu covers a broad range of dishes that allow for choice regardless of taste. Genuinely welcoming to both humans and well behaved dogs, it's refreshing to be able to relax and have something to eat without worrying we'll inadvertently break an unspoken canine rule or be sat in isolation. Efficient service delivered by friendly and helpful staff. What's not to love?

Don't bother visiting because despite what is mentioned on their site. They shut when they choose and not at 11pm as advertised. In fact they shut 1hr 30mins early. Sadly we were not the only people who had made the trip to visit the pub so over 6 people were turned away. Despite knocking on front and back doors. Apparently as James suggested there are other pubs to go to. However when you've walked 20 mins already in the dark this response is more than disappointing. Imagine if Tesco told you that other supermarkets exist. I'll leave this hear for Ricky the manager to respond? We were coming for a drink to see if we wanted to visit for dinner tomorrow?would you revisit when your holiday time is so precious?

Hadn't visited for years and was very impressed with the transformation. Looks like a well run pub with a good choice behind the bar and well presented food.

Staff friendly. Crockery and lettuce mucky. Too few staff for busyness...big birthday party booked, should have employed more bar and experienced catering staff for the day. Overall okay

Had the lasagna it was ok but to much seasonings salt and pepper to much every one to there hone tasted my husband had fish and chips that looked great

Just had the light lunch of fish chips and peas. Service was very prompt and the young waitress excellent. Arrived at opening time 12p.m. and already plenty of people sat at tables. Having said that we were served very quickly and returned 2 empty plates. Would highly recommend.

A genuine nice pub serving a good selection of beers and cider's, we had mains and a dessert and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Called in for a bar meal at lunch time. It was quiet being a weekday but service and food all good.

Great service, the young staff members were, friendly, helpful and professional. The atmosphere was good, lots of families enjoying Father’s Day, the music was a touch to loud. The Sunday lunch was packed full of meat and veg. The beef was a little over cooked and the parsnip uncooked therefore I’d give the food 4 out of 5 the gravy tasted a little too salty and in my option would be better in a separate jug to pour on yourself accordingly. The staff were great and I’d give them a 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Thank you for an enjoyable meal😀👍

£80 for pretty mediocre food. The burger patties were so cheap tasting and processed. On a £14 burger youd expect the burger part to not taste so cheap. Ruined the burger. Not the proper burgers I remember. Cheese and onion pie so salty it was hard to eat. Were told kids waffles came with ice cream nutella and strawberries. They got half a waffle, pouring cream and a bit of fruit. Staff were nice enough, place is lovely but the food was just sub par which surprised me because this place was great the last time I came.

Nice pub within walking distance from Dovestones reservoir. It has a small carpark but we walked from the res after our walk. Lots of new picnic benches in the carpark and its dog friendly with a nice and varied menu. I had the peri peri chicken burger and it was delicious, others had steak and the cheese burger and had no complaints. Staff were helpful and friendly.

My father said he would like to go in there for Sunday lunch 1 day all mi family went it lovely,4 beef lunches 1 omelette n a sticky beef with rice n a bit pudding if your in greenfield give it a try,But beware the landlords a man utd fan,I've deducted 1 star for that sorry,great service from all the young ladies,thanks

Visited following a walk around Dovesstone Resevoir. It turned out to be a lovely unexpected find, the food was outstanding.

Lovely bar staff, the girl serving was extremely polite and courteous.

Had a 11 person meal. Food was excellent, service by a young staff was a bit disorganized, but overall l'm sure things will improve with experience.

Great place, dynamic and friendly staff Nice food

Waitresses polite and friendly. I had Lamb which was so tough I took most home for my dog. The broccoli was also undercooked and was the only vegetable served with it. Cauliflower soup was nice but a little salty and there was salt already sprinkled on my little Grandaughters chips. My partner said he didn't enjoy his lasagne.
