Great little pub, lots of choice , fairly priced. Tasty food, the fish & chips were fresh and served as they should be with mushy peas . Lovely friendly staff will visit again.

This pub may not be quite as successful if it wasn’t for the clearly well organised operation going on behind the scenes. This is one of the busiest pubs (in terms of people: space ratio) and yet nothing ever feels flustered or chaotic. Even at the busiest of times, you can be accommodated and get something to eat or drink, in a seemingly effortless fashion from those serving. Staffing levels are excellent (lots of young folk getting some pocket money!) which certainly helps. All very polite and lovely. We eat here most of the time when we visit (what? We’re on holiday!). This has spanned over 10 years. We have never found fault with any of our experiences. Not that we look for them of course, we are easy to please and appreciate good pub fayre. Portions are hearty. Parmos are mega. Seafood cooked to perfection. Chips are moreish (most people like ‘chip shop style’ chappy down below, you’re in Yorkshire!). Steak pies jam packed and comes in a thick wedge, not a pot. The family owners clearly work very hard - we noticed this over the Christmas period. Not much time off, for the sake of our enjoyment. It is appreciated, and it certainly pays off. See you soon, Cod & Lobster. Don’t change!

Another visit with family to this fantastic venue with amazing sea frontage & harbour. In my opinion you cannot fault the quality of food & prices you pay. Our group had a selection of starters comprising of Fresh chef made fish cakes, Holloumi fries, Scallops & mains courses of Fish & Chips (fish is x2 size of usual fish shops), Fish Pie (cod, salmon, prawns topped with mash & cheese) & Steak & Ale pie. We have never seen so much meat cramped into a pie, it was colossal! Photo attached to prove my point. There is a huge selection of beers, wines, gins & whiskies to choose from. The staff are excellent & attentive & very welcoming. Full marks to the owners & staff for running such a great traditional pub & restaurant without all the hype you see & hear from so called gourmet establishments which are overated & over-priced (IMHO). We will always come back here if we are in the area as it is too good to miss & wish to support such a great business, BUT advise to book ahead to avoid dissapointment during peak times as it will be busy with it being such a great place to eat, especially fresh seafood lovers.

Stayed in Staithes for a few days and it's a quaint little fishing village with lovely cottages and the odd shop, there are a couple of pubs but the Cod and lobster looked best for food. It's in a great location, right on the waterfront and looked great from the outside. Unfortunately, on walking in the interior atmosphere is quite alarming and contrasting to the exterior promise of somewhere cosy. It's too bright, overly lit even in the evening, white walls, white table tops. A quick dimming of the lights would make a huge difference! The staff were all friendly, they had a good range of cask ales and there was a nice blend of locals and holidaying families in there on a Sat eve. The menu is vast, including as expected a lot of seafood options and some pub classics. The portions looked enormous, I saw a few Parmo's go passed to another table and they were monstrous. I ordered steak and Ale pie and my wife had the half lobster. The steak and ale pie was huge, I couldn't eat it all. Chips and gravy were tasty, steak in the pie was ok but the pastry was poor, neither soft nor crispy, definitely didn't taste fresh, and the garden peas somehow undercooked. The lobster was delicious however, although it was served quite peculiarly, in a bowl on top of a mound of chippy chips with orange slices but a nice fresh salad. Prices were reasonable I thought for food and drinks, service was nice and friendly, just the atmosphere, decor, ambience and the food were a little disappointing. I'd probably opt for a cosier pub experience next time

A cold but bright December morning we were looking around Staithes and called in just for coffee. The place was welcoming and warm , and so was the reception we received, although it was a bit too early for drinks or lunch we were made extremely welcome and sitting by the log burner drinking our coffee was the highlight of our visit. I look forward to visiting again and trying the food there, I would thoroughly recommend.

An excellent location right on the harbour. Unfortunately the food let it down. We ordered traditional fish and chips as well as scampi and chips. The scampi was delicious, the fish not so good. But the worse bit was the chips and peas. I returned my chips as they were a pale soggy mush. The replacements looked better but were inedible. They had a revolting taste and the peas were no better. The service was very good but the chef/kitchen staff need replacing. How can they get the basics so wrong?

Read a lot of good things online and didn't live up to my expectations, lovely exterior and location but interior quite stark (bright lighting and white tables) reminded me of a travel cafe rather than cosy country pub. Expensive and staff were adequate, didn't eat there as looking for more atmosphere which we found in bucket loads at the Fox and Hounds in Dalehouse a short walk away.

We recently called in for a long awaited lunch as we have been before and much enjoyed. Unfortunately my husbands kebab was obviously not fresh and cooked to order, my fish and chips were both undercooked and just warm. We waited 15 mins for the drinks order which had to be re ordered. Very disappointed 😞

Strange strange place. Food is very poor quality. Claims to be a seafood restaurant; Worst seafood had anywhere in the world! Stinks of old mops and there are flies everywhere. Some of the staff are friendly enough but I just don't think they see the issues. It needs fresh management to make some bold changes. Survives only due to its location / captive market.

The location is great, particularly if you get the opportunity to sit outside, overlooking the sea. Unfortunately, they play music outside to drown out the noise of the lapping waves. There are no ‘no smoking’ areas so, if one person smokes, everyone has to join in. Lunch and dinner were both good with a large menu to select from. Staff were friendly. We found the interior very bright and the white table tops were more akin to a staff canteen than a cosy seaside pub.

This place is the most obvious food establishment in Staithes based on location by the bay so is very busy and fills up quickly. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The shellfish linguine and scallops were very good. However, there were issues with the lobster dish. Firstly, there was confusion about the actual market price that day. There was a price on the board, which was different to what the server told us and after all the confusion the price on the bill was more expensive than all previous prices quoted. They are open hours before they start serving food so would have expected in this time for them to be coordinated enough to know the price of their food. Had visited especially to taste the lobster but the half lobster dish was pretty bland and the vegetables lacked seasoning. Bit of mixed bag of a review as both high and low points. Would return to give it one more go in case they were having an off day.

Our starter was fine. My main meal of fish tacos presented in soft wraps rather than crispy tacos as I expected. Let’s kThe large prawns were in batter but very soggy - the wrap was filled with too much red cabbage and some red onion as well as the 3 battered prawns and some spicy mayo. I ordered side of chips which were clearly reheated at least once and not palatable. They were chewy and brown. The price of approx £12 and extra £2 for the chips was fine if the meal was good but it wasn’t. My partner enjoyed his food . My meal was disappointing. I wasn’t asked if I enjoyed the food by the staff and had to uncomfortably mention that my food was not enjoyable. The staff apologised and said she would tell the chef. My bill was reduced by the cost of the starter and the chips . ( approx £9) rather than the cost of the main I was complaining about. I payed and the waitress apologised again. I doubt that I’d want to eat an evening meal here again- but I’ve always enjoyed small plates . The drinks and service are brilliant and the atmosphere is lovely as is the view of the harbour . I hope the feedback is taken on board.

Following a similar review from an Ian Dale last week. Food looked great but having asked one waitress to order food, she said she would return. We asked her again, then asked three other waitresses separately no service despite been out on the terrace serveral times after our requests. After 1/2 hour I went in to complain to one of the waitresses about been ignored. I got told I could have ordered from the bar. The owner then came out and expressed her annoyance at complaining to one of her waitresses about poor service. The owner wants to stand back and watch her staff who are not as efficient as she thinks. Probably the best restaurant we have been to in Staithes. Superb atmosphere, surrounded by photos of the past and with a rich history. The seafood 🦞 🍤 🐟 was fresh including the mussels. I can’t complain except the size of the lobster tail was ridiculously small. However, apart from that the fish and chips could feed 3 adults. The chips were the best grade ever. The only thing we didn’t like about the place was the flies, they just kept flying on the food. They should place one of the fly killers in the corner somewhere.

Staithes is such a beautiful place, and my 88 year old dad decided to treat himself and grandson to lobster. This place put him off ever trying lobster again. They shared a whole one, but it was so tiny they hardly had any! It was also tasteless. The fish pie was also tasteless and needed some seasoning and sauce. Even the cheese panini was dry and hardly any cheese. On a positive note, the scampi and seafood kebab were (I am told), good. Place was smelly, and a fair few flies! I visited the establishment yesterday 24/07/24 hoping for an atmospheric lunch in the sun. I saw a single free table(a good sign) on the terrace and quckly asked inside if ordering at the table was OK and if psyment could be made by card. The answer to both questions was affirmative, sounded promising. After sitting I asked the gave the first passing waitress my order. I was surprised that she did not return with the bankcard machine to take payment but assumed I would pay when it arrived. I asked several other staff in the ensuing 25 minutes until it dawned on me that maybe my order had in fact failed. At this point I asked another waitress if she could check the status of my order. After more minutes a senior staff member(the landlady?) asked what I had ordered at which point it became clear that they had no record of my order(it had never been passed on by the original waitress. This senior staff cynically asked if "I thought I had ordered lunch". Myself and other customers were amazed at this language as I had clearly given a verbal order and it had not been refused by the originsl waitress. I was then asked if I eould like to reorder lunch, but as I had wasted 35 minutes if my paid car parking ticket I no longer had sufficient time to wait and eat a lunch. The apology was perfunctory and insincere in tone with a continued "thought I ordered" mentality on the part of the staff. While waiting I had overheard another customer/staff altercation where a customer had complained about how she had been spoken to. In conclusion, the whole 45 minutes was a waste of time, AVOID the place.

Although the setting is nice and food tasty we waited about an hour and a half to be served - too long.

Harbour side pub with good food, much of it from the sea, and a good choice of drinks, including more rums than you knew existed! It was very busy even on a Sunday evening so booking would be recommended. Dog friendly.

We have repeatedly heard positive reports about the Cod & Lobster so thought we would book in twice during our recent stay in Staithes. On the first evening my son tried his first lobster. Sadly it was so small there were barely two mouth fulls to try! Disappointing. Despite this I decided to keep life simple and return on our last night when my mother was joining us. Her mobility is not good so it made sense to stay near where we were staying. Our order included a burger, a salmon dish served on a rosti, a pie of the day and fish skewers served with chilli rice. Where do I start with the plethora of issues?? Firstly we waited 45 minutes for food. It's a busy pub I understand but still, 45 minutes without any explanation or apology is too much. The burger was one of those tasteless solid lumps of grey meat you see from burgers previously frozen. The manager reports that they are in fact bought in 'premium steak burgers' - I completely disagree with this. It was solid. It was grey. It was hard. The peas served with 2 of the meals were crunchy. The manger says these are frozen peas....... why?!?!?! The salmon, whilst cooked well, was served on what can only be described as a previously frozen hash brown. The manager confirmed it was bought in and frozen but that it was a rosti. (I'd check the writing on the freezer bag, it was a hash brown at best). My mother's Sea Food kebab was over cooked and tough. The chilli rice looked like boil in the bag rice that had a few chopped chillis mixed into it. Given their reliance on convenience items from the freezer I would suggest that was the source of this 'special' rice. The manager assured us it was made fresh. It certainly didn't look or taste fresh. When I asked the waiter which desserts were home made sadly it was only the crumble. The other desserts are bought in but from local suppliers so we decided to try the cheesecake only to be told 15 minutes later that they had run out. We spoke to the manager by accident really. Our very sweet waitress asked if we had enjoyed the meal and when my mother replied politely but honestly the manager was called over to speak to us. I told him of our issues. He argued each point even saying that he had tried the burger and thought it was lovely. And so I am swimming against the tide here........ The Cod and Lobster is a little gold mine for someone. Heaving through the summer months with the tourists and their hard earned money, repeat business is not a necessity in this business model thankfully. The location is as good as it gets in Staithes and they have some lovely bar and waiting staff but please do not be fooled, this is basic cooking, pub grub if you will. Reheated items put together on a plate in such a way it look like it could be palitable ..... until you look a little closer or have the misfortune to eat it. The menu is VAST - there is no way that one cook (I'm not using the word chef!) can do so many dishes justice and they did not disappoint during our visit. Surely it is better to offer far fewer options but to do them to a better standard? They offer the longest gin and whisky menu I have seen in even the most swanky bars in London however I would do yourself a favour and stop there. Have a nice drink with a view..... then go home and cook yourself something from fresh using the amazing local ingredients available in this area avoiding crunchy previously frozen peas, boil in the bag rice and shop bought hash browns!! On the plus side it was a cheap meal out...... and that was without any discount despite voicing our issues. Disappointing.

Recently called in here with our two sons and three of their friends, having been for a walk in Broxa forest. We were straight away shown to a table before our drinks order was taken. Staff could not have been more helpful or polite. Will definitely call in again.

A friendly, clean, well managed little bistro that welcomes dogs. Food is homemade with generous portions. Very good value for money and one of my favourite places to visit.
