Lovely cafe. Historic and warm environment. Fairly quiet most weekdays. Great place for a coffee after a sea front walk. Outside seating in good weather.

Great Christmas meal with work colleagues. Service was great and food was superb. We will be back!

Lovely place for all requirements whether just a drink, snack or lunch. Dog friendly inside and out. Brilliant.

Have been here a number of times for breakfast and it never disappoints. Recently went to their winter garden event with friends - wow. Great food, cocktails and the staff were fantastic.

The food was disgusting considering the price. Cold congealed and overcooked all at once. Did even eat it but because we had already waited ages I didn’t want to send it back. Waited over an hour and spent a fortune. We rarely eat out and it was a huge disappointment.

Worst Fish & Chips I had in my life. The food quality was worst then Wetherspoons for double the price. I got a stomach ache shortly after eating, so the hygiene is probably also poor. The staff was nice, though.

Dog friendly. Lunch was good. Don't go if you are in a rush or don't have patience. The crag sandwich was good, but Southern Chicken Sandwich is better. Ask for a pitcher of water and extra ketchup.

Service is abysmal. Coffee indifferent. I have visited twice in July/August 2024. Both times we waited for nearly 15 minutes, in spite of it not being busy- staff simply did not emerge from the cafe building. A simple order of coffee and soft drinks then took a long time to arrive. Today we visited a second time. Staff told us we could not sit at one table because it was reserved for 11am ( we arrived at 11.20 and the customers who reserved had still not arrived. We were not greeted or shown a different table - two servers just watched us sit nearby and disappeared inside. We waited 15 mins for service but then got up and left, taking our custom elsewhere. the cafe was not busy on a sunny Sunday morning in the summer. The cafe does not deserve its prime setting. We won’t be visiting again. Fortunately Southsea has many other lovely cafe options

Head towards the Castle near the D Day museum and you will discover a great restaurant in a beautiful open area. The food was delicious and the service was superb.

Lovely service. Great roasts. They were very accommodating to our needs. They were very busy but well organised. Took care of my 89 year old mother and she had a child's meal at a child's price. They gave us a very accessible table. A great experience.

A great little place to grab brunch before taking a little stroll along the shore and visiting the D-Day Museum and the Landing Craft LCT 7074 just down the road. Food is not particularly exquisite but not bad.

Visited June 2024 with my parents. We were actually visiting the nearby D-Day museum (which was excellent, by the way, and well worth a visit) but wanted something more for lunch. Table service took around 15 minutes to even acknowledge us, despite three staff looking after around 10 people seated at 4 other tables. Drinks then took a further 20 minutes to arrive from very laid back staff, food a further 30 minutes after being assured it would be "5 minutes" after the drinks service. First time I've ever had beans on toast served in a bowl, which was... Interesting! Mac and cheese was a few pieces of pasta in a very runny cheese soup (with only a fork supplied) food tasted generic with nice presentation in an attempt to justify the price, I presume, which was quite high. 100% would not recommend or visit again.

Extremely over priced for the quality of the food and service you get, coffee was not good either. Only time someone smiled was when we went to pay the pill on the way out. Never will return.

While visiting the castle, we decided to stop for a late Sunday lunch at Courtyard and try their Sunday roast, and it was off the charts! The vibe was very chill, and the service was on point. But let's talk about that roast—mouthwatering meat, killer gravy, and veggies that hit the spot. It's the spot to be for a laid-back hangout with epic food vibes.

I just had lunch here and the sunday roast was amazing. I totally recommend eating here.

I went there for brunch for a friend's birthday and was really impressed. I had the salmon scrambled eggs and the portion was huge and it was so good. The eggs were perfectly cooked, salmon tasty and the bread was fantastic. Their coffee is also really nice and I enjoyed the peach belini. I highly recommend

Popped in for coffee ☕ on boxing day morning. Staff were so warm and welcoming. We ordered coffee and toast. Coffee was fabulous and the toast was yumm. The background music and surroundings resulted in a marvelous coffee ☕ stop.

We eat most Sunday’s for a roast, absolutely amazing… the staff give you 5 star service, they are the best… Rachel,Connor,Jasmine,Gareth,Elliott,Becky,Lucy and Matt, they always go the extra mile. Dave & Tracey x

Such a wonderful location inside an old fort very ambient :) Sunday roast with my dad who I rarely see made this very special to me Never been a huge fan of gravy but THIS I swear ugh roast beef my little stomach ate all of it The spiced chai latte was delicious Staff were amazingly attentive

The courtyard is a very nice seaside place to be.(My experience was sat outside)Worth noting that the restaurant is dog friendly. Unfortunately I had a rather disappointing piece of fish, but everyone else enjoyed their meals.

Visited for the first time this morning and very inflated over priced breakfast. Ordered the Steak & Eggs at £16. Very small steak and was tough & chewy. They couldn't cook it how I would like as its so small. Hash browns were soggy because they had hollandaise sauce on. The highlight was the tomatoes I'm afraid. Very disappointing breakfast. 😞

Came in by myself and ordered a cup of tea with full intent to order lunch. It took 20 minutes to be asked what I wanted to drink. It took a further 15 minutes for a teapot, milk and no sugar to arrive. Came because of a recommendation but won’t be returning.

Visiting the Courtyard was a great way to start the day at Southsea. It was going to be a very hot day, but sitting in the Courtyard, in the shade surrounded by thick walls it was cool and fresh. The staff are friendly and I can recommend the vegi breakfast. Nice toast, not to greasy and tasty. A very relaxing place to sit in the morning shade.

Sorry but the Garlic prawns with warm foccachia and mayo were a nightmare to try and eat with their shell on. No space on the board for the bodies and had to ask for finger bowl as not offered. Ended up giving up after the 3rd very oily. Slippery prawn. Disappointed as looking forward to lunch.

This place used to be very good, but has gone downhill recently. Breakfast used to be £10 and you got two of everything, its now £14 and very meagre. Its a similar story with the lunch menu. There was hardly anyone else there this morning and it still took 30 mins to arrive. Wont be rushing back any time soon unless things change - much better options close by.

Such a lovely setting and a really varied menu, suiting our very different tastes, but all fresh and lovely.

Overall pretty good, nice little venue with decent indoor or outside seating, completely dog freindly too which is nice. Sitting inside was nice as it was quite cool due to the nature of the building. Thought the service was a tad on the slow side but very polite staff and it was a Sunday morning so maybe not quite fully staffed, hard to say. Not for everyone as its about a 3 or 4 minute walk from parking so would not recommend for people with a mobile disability, definately not for wheelchair users as being an old Fort there is some cobble stone.

Disappointing breakfast, £14 and only contains 1 sausage. 2 items were missing which after asking came out 5mins later cold and overcooked without any apology

Great evening at The Courtyard last night. Lovely tapas menu which was gorgeous. 2 for 1 cocktails. Lovely atmosphere. Highly recommend!

What an absolute gem of a place this is, staff very friendly and attentive we went on a Saturday night buy 1 get one free cocktails (properly made not a weatherspoons barcardy breezer with a mixed wkd😂) and the food was incredible not the cheapest but you do get what you pay for at this place - I honesty can't fault it love the shared platers keep up the good work we will definitely be back 👌

This was not our first visit to this lovely place. A great breakfast in an historic venue wlth polite and attentive staff. Prices relect the area, good value for the high quality food and surroundings.

very friendly staff and tasty child's menu. despite amazing chips and peas, the fish was overcooked and was the most tasteless thing my wife and I had eaten (probably we were just unlucky, because it looks well inside). we were ready to put up with that because we mixed it up with the weekend menu (out mistake) and thought it cost only £9.5 pounds, but it cost £17.5

Ate here in March. Absolutely awful. I ordered the Buddha Bowl Salad (£15) , to which they had forgotten to add the falafel. The 'guacamole' if that's what it was, was watery and unpleasant. The humus tasted off ... really bad. The salad also tasted like it was past it's sell-by date. When I asked for some salad dressing, I was given a small bowl of balsamic glaze. Everything was inedible except for the falafel that I had to remind them to give me. Coffee very standard, as per Costa or McDonald's.

I had the goat's cheese and roasted med veg, in early March. It was expensive. Given the high Google rating, I wasn't expecting it to be quite so bad. I can't imagine who made the delicious meals described by the Google reviews of this place. He/she definitely wasn't on duty the day I went

Highly over priced. Very disappointed after paying £8 for the "bacon doorstop" with an added egg for an extra £2. Felt totally ripped off when I was served one of the lamest bacon sandwiches I've had. The price and description made me think I would be getting something better than 2 lame rashers of bacon between 2 thin slices of cheap bread. Won't be going back. Staff were friendly and helpful.

The service was great and they were trying their best, however the kitchen couldn’t cope with capacity and we ended up waiting over half an hour to order which we didn’t mind. But, on top of that the food took an hour to arrive. Both overpriced, the seafood chowder was too salty and the focaccia was dry and too salty, I couldn’t eat it. The chicken burger was a fatty thigh which I had to spit out often. It was unenjoyable. The hashbrown inside was undercooked and the chips were greasy and salty again. Despite this, I would recommend the carrot cake. The ambience is nice however everyone around us were also complaining about the wait time. I would not recommend eating here and there are more valuable and affordable eateries nearby.

LEFT FEELING ROBBED AT BREAKFAST. On arrival the courtyard looks very inviting with it being in a historic location we had high hopes it would be enjoyable. Service : fantastic (no complaints here) greeted promptly. Seated straight away and even with the request to change tables it was no problem at all for them. Atmosphere : music playing in background which was plesent. Decor seemed cheap. Surrounded by plastic ivy and hanging plastic plants which seemed pretty lame. Furniture was grubby and some chairs felt rickety. Food: now this is where my low rating comes in. Looking at the menu we felt like we were in for a treat with boasts about field mushrooms, fresh doorstop bread, steak and eggs, chorizo stacks etc etc.... We had ordered a full English for £14 and bacon doorstop with an added egg for £10 (which I already felt was shocking having an egg added costing an extra £2!!!) When the food arrived we were left feeling disappointed. Most of the ingredients used seemed average at best and not worth the price your paying. I hate to say it but you would receive the same food at spoons and pay less than half the price you do here (AND I NEVER RECOMMEND SPOONS!!) Toast wasn't toasted. Tomatoes hadn't seen the grill long enough. Sausage was cold. Bacon was tough. Egg yolk very pale. Watery SINGLE mushroom. Hash browns were mass produced poor quality. Bacon and egg door stop...... 2 slices of thin cheap bread with 2 slices of cold bacon with a fried anemic egg served on a wooden bread board in hopes to look fancy. Costing a total of £10!! 5 stars for the tea though. Love a nice cup of tea pigs.

We had to wait about 40mins for our full English breakfast! By the time the food had come out we had finished our hot drinks! We had to send back our orders as the bacon wasn't cooked enough, floppy white rind! My beans were cold! Not impressed at £17.40!!!

Would give 0 stars. Was not busy. Waited 40 mins for a bacon sandwich which was eaten before drinks arrived. Bacon sandwich wasn’t buttered and cost £8 for some bread and a streak of bacon. Ordered 4 drinks which took an hour to come. Coffee was made with home off soya milk and was thick with a mould layer. Would never some again.

Food ok but not the best. The Focaccia over toasted and dry chips were ok though

Service was excellent and the food, although mostly deep fried fare was tasty. The wine selection was terrible, basically just your cheap tesco wines like Castillo del Diablo and Bancroft but priced as if there were top vintage. Luckily they were doing rather tasty 2-4-1 cocktails.

The place was empty and yet the service was very slow, when the overpriced focaccia sandwiches did eventually turn up, they were extremely disappointing and the main ingredients were sparse , especially the cheese, not good for a "melt" sandwich!

£6 for a tasteless hot chocolate, cup was only half full of hot chocolate rest was cheap squirty cream, hard marshmallows on the top with a flake which was best thing about the drink, I know prices have gone up but this is crazy.

Been here many times and the food has always surpassed expectations and the service is always great. I particularly like the fact that it's Dog friendly and they have some good vegan options.

Superb! Best breakfast I’ve had in a long time. Too hungry to take photos but the Steak and Eggs were wonderful and the Breakfast Stack was delicious according to my fussy wife. Clearly lovely fresh produce. Great hollandaise sauce. Lovely polite and warm service. Cute place. Glad we found this spot! Will return.

It was my husband’s 30th birthday this past weekend so along with a few friends, we took a little trip to Portsmouth/ Southsea. We stumbled across The Courtyard looking for Bloody Mary’s and cake to please two hungover men and a pregnant lady. (We weren’t sure where to start looking) We were so impressed! The cocktails were expertly made, the menu was so diverse and the cake was perfect! The atmosphere is lovely, especially now over the holiday seasons. It was such an ice cold day but this place warmed the cockels (did I spell that right?) of our hearts! Absolutely great service, such friendly and accommodating staff and dog friendly! We had such a great time that we came back that night for more cocktails and small plates. We highly recommend the antipasti platter! You won’t find better food anywhere else, each dish is prepared to perfection and tastes sensational. You will not be disappointed by this little piece of heaven tucked away in an old castle by the sea. We had a wonderful chat with the gentlemen behind the delicious food and the fabulous bar tendress at the end of the night, they are such a delightful bunch! We will definitely be back, the 2 hour drive is definitely worth it. Thank you to everyone who works there for making my husband’s day so special!

Turned up, spur of the moment, wanting a couple of drinks. Staff were absolutely lovely and welcoming, happy to seat us. Delicious cocktails, highly recommended.

Found this place on a web search. It's set in the courtyard of Southsea castle and is a bit hidden. But its well worth looking for! They serve "small plate" meals and we had 6 between the two of us and it was ample food. We had scallop and chorizo stack, pankho chicken, chicken pate balls, fries, aubergine in sauce and arancini balls. Followed by poached pears and champagne sorbet and churros and sauce. Cocktails were two for one and were great! Sat at a nice table in the first section, there was another group of 4 and other people though the next area. There was a gentle hubbub of conversation etc and no music so you could hear yourself talk. We did spend a bit but it was an anniversary celebration, well worth it though. The waitress was lovely, chatty and informative. Great evening. We'd definitely recommend it.

Great place to have a calm tea break in beautiful surroundings away from the busy-ness of the pier and beach areas. The coffee cake with walnuts and vegan jaffa cake were fresh and delicious. Would love to return to try the Sunday roast which looked really good as well.

We stopped off for a quick soft drink after our walk, lovely setting in the castle. Would recommend on hot days that all umbrella's are up on the courtyard tables as it looked like it was closing and i saw people walking away, not all staff seemed happy to be working.

Whenever we are in Pompey we try to get in at the courtyard. I loved tackling the cocktail menu; Mmmm Floribunda. The food was, as always perfect, and its such a cheerful cosy place, despite being in the bowels of an old fort! If you haven't dined here I can highly recommend. Easy parking and very short walk form the D-Day museum car park.

Really peaceful place for a cup of coffee did not eat but have done so in the past.

Literally the best roast dinner in England. Our waiteress Elanor was so good aswell.

Terrible experience, bad management, we were told we cant order food when we came in (we were very hungry) , but saw other people ordering food non stop, turns out kitchen was closed but no one told us when it opened. Visited few times before, will not visit again.

I had lunch here with three friends, one of whom was celebrating a birthday. As a vegetarian, I found several interesting choices on the menu and I decided on the Buddha Bowl with chick peas, falafel, avocado, butternut squash, salad leaves and a dip. The waitress said butternut squash wasn't available, so I ordered feta cheese instead. One of my friends had a Ruben Chiabatta, another chose the Gourmet Burger, and another the Pork Belly Burger. It took quite a while for the food to be served, but this may have been because a member of staff went out for some butternut squash so this was added to my Buddha Bowl as well as the feta cheese. Portions of all our meals were very generous, and three of us weren't able to finish our food although it was extremely good. The hot chocolate, tea and white wine were also appreciated, but one of my friends found the coffee a little strong. Service was polite and friendly. I should just mention that the toilets are outside, across the courtyard, but obviously not far. Highly recommended, and I hope I have the chance to go again.

Delicious food and wonderful service. Went there with my dog and friends with their baby and we all felt well catered for and there was a hospitable space for the dog to sit with us as well.

We booked in advance for 11:30. When we booked we were told we would have to order quick before 11:40 to get the breakfast menu as that is their change over time. We arrived on time. Sat down and ordered immediately. Five minutes later a waiter returned at bang on 11:40 to tell us we couldn’t have the breakfast we had already ordered. He said we could order lunch but not until 12:00. This we would be punished for doing exactly as we had been instructed by a 20 minute wait before we could even order! We did wait 10 minutes but when it became clear they were not even going to bring our drinks we left. We went to the Briney without a book were seated with a smile and order taken right away. Now maybe it’s me but I really don’t understand why Courtyard couldn’t take an order right away after disappointing us. Really poor customer service that left me feeling disappointed and disrespected.

A fantastic lunch at The Courtyard! I'd never eaten here before but will definitely be back. The staff were friendly and the food was excellent. WE had ciabattas and a buddha bowl, all were extremely tasty and well presented. The chips were also perfectly cooked!
