The Cuckoo in Huntingdonshire

Extremely disappointed from the time we walked in. No service at the bar before we sat down for our meal. Placed our food order to be notified 10 minutes later the starters and the main course wasn’t available. Sirloin steak being a popular choice I would have expected this to be available. How can a restaurant run out of sirloin steak so early on a Saturday evening. We were offered the ribeye, which wasn’t great. Served with 9 chunky chips. Overrated and overpriced. Ordered dessert, to find pieces of plastic in the dessert. This was not only highly unpleasant but also concerning from a food safety perspective. To make matters worse, when I requested a coffee at 10:15 pm to help clear the lingering plastic caught in my throat, I was told the coffee machine had been turned off and no coffee was being served. This experience was deeply disappointing. It is unacceptable for a restaurant to run out of key menu items, serve cold custard, and fail to uphold basic food safety standards. Additionally, switching off the coffee machine while customers are still dining demonstrates poor service planning and lack of attentiveness to customer needs.

We drove past here on way to hotel. Booked online. We have vintage inns near to us and know you get a decent meal. We were not let down.

Staff very friendly as soon as we arrived. Both my wife and I enjoyed the food. What really made it was the open fire places. Would recommend visiting.

Very nice, cosy country pub on a cold winters day. Friendly service especially a northern Irish man who seemed to be in charge of the kitchen. Top service with a smile and a joke. Food was decent for the money. My cask ale was well kept. I'll 100% be back next time I'm in area on business

Great visit again this evening. The service was top notch. Cat and Kaci took great care of us. We also got a nice table by the fire. We will return.

I’m a local at the Cuckoo and have been going in for 15 years+ , went in Xmas day for a pint got turned away no explanation, no apology and land lord just unprofessional. It was also closed for walk ins on New Year’s Day, at the end of the day it’s a pub and not a restaurant

1900 hrs booking New Year’s Eve set menu the worst £120 I have spent all year, we have been going here for over 20 years without a complaint but New Year’s Eve was a disgrace waiting for a drink waiting for our dessert and had rhubarb and custard put in front of me without a word until I asked where my dessert was because they had runout of apple crumble and mince pie, the starter was very nice but it went down hill from then onwards, sorry cuckoo but you need to up your game and train your staff.

Almost turned away by staff, not very inviting. Only wanted a drink. Managed to get some food, however the portions were incredibly stingy and not worth the money. I don't think we'll be rushing back!

I visited on the 18th December for the first time with my son and friend and was served by Lorraine who was attentive and friendly and happily chatted to our autistic son and answered his never-ending questions happily while clearing tables and working hard nearby. The only downside was no cauliflower cheese to accompany our festive treat but these things happen. I visited again with friends and my family, 4 adults and my autistic son. We were served by Ella who was absolutely amazing and we all commented on how she didn't stop for a second, rushing around, trying to manage and resolve any issues as they arose and knew the meals and prices etc of the top of her head spotting straight away one of the starters was a bar snack and not the chicken started ordered, Ella spotted this before it was touched and double checked my friend was happy to have this instead and updated the bill immediately, explaining to two other members of staff and then also a kitchen staff member the difference, why they needed to be aware, the difference in process etc, she was calm clear and professional throughout and still took time at the end of the night to have a chat with us and nothing was too much trouble for her. But wow - every restaurant needs an Ella! On two of the main meals the chips arrived almost cold, again this was resolved with new ones being taken out but there was quite a wait for these considering the rest of our meals were being eaten. I'd love to give 5 stars for Ella and Lorraine and the food itself was mostly delicious and both times the atmosphere around where we sat was lovely but unfortunately between the starter and the chips I've dopped a star but I do hope the staff get the recognition they deserve. I will be back in 2025 - Happy New Year to all at the Cuckoo.

This is our local that we’ve come to for 20 plus years yet once again, Christmas Day they are more bothered about their bottom line than their locals who support them through out the year. Turned up for a quick Christmas Day drink and refused to be served as only people who are eating were allowed. In response to your response, we asked prior to Christmas Day if we could book a table for drinks and was told that despite there being some free tables you were not taking bookings for just drinks and that it was a first come first serve basis on Christmas Day

Lovely meals, from two different menu's but all served together to our table of 5. The staff were very attentive but not intrusive, and looked after us well. One member of the party was cold (we were sat in the atrium) but she is 90, and next time I will ask to be seated somewhere different.

Xmas Dinner Day was exceptional, compliments to the chef and all the staff a truly peaceful and wonderful experience.

Nice Christmas dinner, but pretty lax service. Could be better, understaffed and a bit slow. Waited about 8 mins for a pint at an empty bar.

We are frequent visitors to the Cuckoo as we live locally. The service is always good and the food is excellent. Whenever we have friends or family visiting we go to the Cuckoo. For the last 8 years we have always visited the Cuckoo on Christmas day for a few drinks before lunch. Imagine our dismay, when this year we were turned away. We were told that they were only open for pre-booked meals. Since when did our local PUB become a restaurant? I am absolutely disgusted! Needless to say, we walked to another establishment on Christmas Day and we are seriously considering if we will return to the Cuckoo in 2025.

We were served by Gift, who did an absolutely wonderful job. She was very busy, but managed to help make our experience really good. The food was also delicious.

Ive been here a few times over the years and must say this years xmas dinner (we were a table of 10) was appalling, worst dinner I've had, a few of us had a trio roast, we had to send them back as they were cold, the veg & Yorkshire puddings were frozen (hate frozen veg) and looked like they just been chucked on the plate!! Last years dinner was very nice, can honestly say my group will look else where in the future

Great friendly atmosphere. Lovely decor. Food was disappointing however, starter was great but main and dessert were average at best. Service was ok but felt waiters were playing catch up from the start as they had confused the order, it was understandable as we were a group of twenty however it was a pre-order which they had weeks to prepare for. We had to ask for certain things like Yorkshire puddings and stuffing which I believe should have been on the plate with our roast dinner from the offset.

Awful meal , xmas group of 8, no one had their meals brought out together, my meal was cold , then had to wait ages for second meal to come when it arrived there were salad leaves decorating an xmas turkey dinner ,parsnips were burnt and roast potatoes soft and slimy. With dessert waitress said she would return with cutlery but never did .Will not be returning . Am very disappointed in what used to be a favorite .

slow service (over an hour for starters) and servers giving drinks while touching the tops of glasses (so unhygienic!) and she actively avoided us trying to sign her down for more drinks. It looks festive and cosy, and the food is OK. But gosh, you'll be there all day just waiting for someone to take your drink order.

Excellent food will service to match. Made to feel very welcome by all of the staff. Tried most of the menu as we were stopping locally for a few days and would recommend the steak & venison pie. Drop in for food and drinks you will not be disappointed.

The venue is lovely, but I was a little disappointed with the food, we had to have a something off the standard menu as the steak we wanted from the festive menu was sold out, we were ushered along with a question whether we wanted hot drinks whilst we were eating our dinner, and then told that the area was closing so we'd need to pay. It all just seemed a little unwelcoming. The amount of chips we got with the steak was a underwhelming given the price and the steak quickly went cold. The room was quite cold and when we asked if we could put a log in the fire the waiter said can't put logs on after 8pm. I like the cuckoo, I've been many times, but the food, and hospitality from young staff let the experience down in honesty.

We enjoyed an afternoon in the Cookoo eating and drinking with family. We really enjoyed our time we were not rushed to vacate the table and felt really relaxed.

Very attractive pub, conveniently located close to the A1, making it a good choice for a meet up. Staff were extremely friendly and food was good. I would definitely come here again.

Arrived at 8.30pm and asked if they are still serving food at the bar. Was told if quick could order - I was waiting for friend to arrive and 10 minutes later 8.40pm try to order food and told the kitchen is closed. Young girl comes out and tells me the kitchen closes at 9pm - well it’s only 8.40pm. They started cleaning up - so don’t say the kitchen closes at 9! She then tells me they’ve had a busy day - well LUCKY YOU I say. Surely I’m this current climate that’s what you want. She tells me to go to the Harvester down the road. I find it odd that you would turn away business and send me to a rival business suffice to say I won’t be going back. I have always found the service there to be terrible.

I’ve booked a table for four with friends for Sunday lunch. Two of my friends had never been before as they are from Leicestershire. One of the friends is gluten intolerant And we wasn’t sure what to expect of the menu initially as the menu looked more towards highlighting what was vegan or vegetarian. However, the staff were very accommodating and helpful, and we managed to get a beautiful roast for my friend Including gluten-free gravy and gluten-free cauliflower cheese. She really enjoyed her meal, as did we. Presentation and the quality of the ingredients as well as the way everything was cooked and presentation was absolutely spot-on. We loved having dinner here and would definitely return as a foursome. The Cuckoo has always been a lovely place to visit, But the fact they go out of their way to cater to allergies Is brilliant. Thanks to all the team for a lovely afternoon.

Was in town for a couple days from the US and was looking for a nice sit down place with good food. The Cuckoo did not disappoint. Great food and good service. If we are back in town, we will stop again.

Tina was very polite and helpful. The food was tasty, I would definitely eat here again.

Only ok I’m afraid.Used to love it here but went in during a quiet lunchtime service and had to wait 40 minutes for starters to come after watching people who came in later get their food first. Disappointing food with little flavour, calamari that was hard and cold and waitresses forgetting drinks all added up to a below average experience. Will be looking elsewhere unfortunately.

Poor food choice slow service rude staff and one meal inedible

Went for lunch for a catch up with a childhood friend I haven't seen for years. Staff were very welcoming and showed us to our table. We both had the mac and cheese and a drink. Food was lovely and the staff were attentive. Would recommend.

Disappointed with The cukoo today. Went in for lunch and ordered a beef brisket sandwich. Nearly £12, would expect more than a tiny piece of stale bread with a sprinkle of meat inside which tasted and resembled tuna more so than beef. Raised to the staff who offered to change it but considering this was the best of the 4 that our group got I thought it pointless.

The landlord is a cracking chap very friendly and nothing too much bother. Food for a lunch was much enjoyed and been near the virgin media office handy for return visit

We had Sunday lunch here and whilst initial impressions were positive, sadly the food and service was disappointing. There was a lack of communication between the staff resulting in drinks not arriving along with difficulty in actually speaking with staff presumably due to insufficient numbers. When the food did arrive, the majority of the vegetables were not cooked well with a lot being burnt on the outside and hard in the middle and the cauliflower cheese was completely inedible. That said, the beer was good.

Lovely welcoming vibe when we arrived. Was seated at our table quickly and wasn’t forgotten about whilst deciding on order. Tina was our main server and was extremely helpful and friendly throughout. We all loved our food choices and was able to tweak the dessert to suit our taste too. Would highly recommend and would certainly revisit ourselves.

Went here for a few drinks and some food with the family, first time we’ve been here and overall it was very pleasant. The cocktails we had were very nice (it’s also nice that there’s a good selection of non-alcoholic drinks), and we had some bar snacks with our drinks, first time in a good while I’ve been able to have whitebait and it was lovely. Later on we had some of the main course food, I had a stone-baked margarita pizza and it was perfect - not to mention a generous portion size for the cost! Only downside (not the Cuckoo’s fault at all) was an elderly couple who were seated nearby, they gave the staff an awful amount of abuse, swearing and being incredibly rude. I’m pretty sure one/both of them were rather drunk too. Staff were very gracious and handled it as best they could - I’ve been in customer service and dealt with similarly belligerent customers - I know how frustrating it can be! Overall a very nice experience, great food, nice drinks, very friendly staff (despite the curmudgeonly old woman’s assertions) and a lovely venue. Will definitely come back if we’re in the area!

The best Sunday roast in Peterborough and the surrounding areas. The only reason I marked the service down was due to it being slow every time we've been. But saying that, the staff are lovely, very polite and helpful. If you are looking for a cosy, traditional atmosphere, this is the place. Parking on site and round the front on the road. We come here regularly and wouldn't recommend anywhere else on a Sunday! (Pic is of the mango Eton mess).

Great well cooked food and service. I was a customer a few years back and the quality was good, but over time the quality back then had dropped off quite a lot over the span of a year or so we stopped coming unfortunately. But trying out the food now it far surpasses the quality it was back then, even the historic best is not as good as it is now. Our server was Dannielle who did a great job and was really polite and the roast dinner was absolutely spot on. Could not fault it. Whatever has changed in that time has been a significant improvement.

We had a really lovely dining experience, and we had a lovely waitress Ella, she was very friendly and attentive, and very kind. The chef Scott who cooked for us made an enjoyable meal and Ashley made our pudding which was really tasty and presented very well. Also the music was a lovely selection and was a good volume

Great service, very attentive. We were a party of 10 and the order was correct. 2 people are disabled and in wheelchairs, we had a large space reserved for us so we could get the wheelchair in and out without issue.

Visited yesterday as we often have in the past. Very disappointed. No staff at arrival, when one did arrive she claimed they had no availability but second person immediately took us to a table. After a short wait the drinks order was taken but these failed to materialise. Food ordered but then had to ask when drinks were coming as they had still not arrived. Whilst waiting for our food we noticed one plated meal get transported to the dining area and then returned to the kitchen. My companion jokingly commented that she hoped that was not her meal getting cold ! When we did get food it felt as if it had been sitting ing the kitchen for a while and was luke warm at best. The fish was dry and the chips overdone and were mainly the edge cuttings from the potatoes. The hunters chicken was passable but not as good as in the past. We felt the restaurant was understaffed. Towards the end of our meal we were asked how things were but the server seemed uninterested in our reply and just walked away. As stated we have been to the Cuckoo on several occasions, including two Christmas Day lunches, but have to say that this has been by far the worst experience we have had.

Dinner said chicken with BBQ and bacon and cheddar , came with a bechamel burger slop on top very salty and managers answer was it's got cheddar mixed in with it....lady who served me did look upset so at least someone was bothered 😡
