Good ale, food a bit hit and miss. Pie was hot, mash and gravy cold. Steak baguette was tough and served cold.

Had a cracking Sunday roast at The Flying Pig in Bowness-on-Windermere, and Stacey was absolutely brilliant! She couldn’t have been more friendly or on the ball. The roast was spot on, and the sticky toffee pudding? Honestly, out of this world. Best I’ve ever had. Can’t recommend it enough!

After eating here on several occasions, I decided to take my daughter for a birthday lunch. We were met with a very sullen man who told us that we would have to wait at least half an hour for food. That's OK we said, we were asked to be patient and take a seat. When the food arrived (fish sandwich with mushy peas) the peas were stone cold, and there were only about 10 chips. We then asked the waitress how long pudding would take as we had to catch a bus. Straight away she said, I'll do it myself. After 10 mins we said that we had to go, the waitress said you've ordered it now so I'm not taking it off the bill. She put the pudding in a box, about a spoonful of chocolate brownie with cream. I asked for a spoon. No spoons she said. How are we to eat it I asked. She shrugged her shoulders and called us rude. All in all it was a very disappointing experience. We also noticed that we had paid a service charge. What a shame, after over 5 years of visiting this establishment, never again. £65 worth of disappointment.

Displeasure, disgust, disappointment. All of those I experienced during my experience there. Firstly, we came here as an expensive treat for my mother as it was her birthday. On arrival an ignorant man reluctantly greeted us. He took us to a semi clean table after 10 minutes of waiting. He told us the wait for food would be at least 30 minutes which was okay. Any time a person walked past the table violently shook causing my elderly grandma to panic. The shame. The noise of barking dogs and loud children really helped the atmosphere. The meal arrived after about 45 minutes of hunger and pain. This is when the disappointment began. What I thought was a simple, easy meal of fish and chips, obviously was not. The mushy peas - cold. The fish - dry. The chips - basically nonexistent. Although, due to our starvation, we ate it. This torturous meal had to be topped by something, in this case - the pudding. We asked the waitress how long the pudding would take and she said she'd make it herself. How lovely of her we thought. After 10 minutes we had no brownie, so we went to the counter to pay and tell her we no longer wanted it. She straight away said no - we'd already ordered and we couldn't take it off. So, we waited. After 5 minutes she came out with a large box. We were filled with hope, a sense of happiness that we'd finally be given something good. My grandmother opened the box and our hearts dropped and filled with emptiness. I felt like the Grinch with a heart 3 sizes too small. In the box sat £7.50 worth of something resembling a poo. A teaspoon of crushed brownie with some honey drizzled on top. Maybe we could at least have a spoon to eat the monstrosity with? No way - why would I have expected such a delux item from them. The lady replied with a rude shrug and plainly said no and that we were being unkind. Overall, thanks for ruining my mother's birthday and taking £65 plus a non-negotiable tip from my grandmother who spent her hard earned money just to bring some joy into my poor mother's eyes.

We visited here one Sunday in September for a roast dinner, and what a roast it was! Everything was absolutely spot on! We both opted for the trio of roasts so we could try everything, and we were so glad we did! It was busy but we had a nice table for two and we weren't rushed at all. We will definitely come back on our next visit to Bowness!

The drinks and staff were fine, but the food was terrible. My husband ordered schnitzel which was ok, but slightly over cooked. I had the shepherd's pie, when it arrived I was surprised as it was a small dish containing the shepherd's pie, with a side of pickled red cabbage. It didn't look much for the price I paid, but I had hopes it would be big on flavour. How wrong I was!! It was very dry, with 70% potato and very little base, which had little to no gravy. Whether when first made it was nice and juicy, then ruined on re heating I will never no. I did complain and was issued a refund without question!! Such a shame as its a lovely pub.

Went in for tea on sunday, if you want something other than a roast - don’t bother Both of us had the beef roast, the plate was 80% cabbage, a couple of carrots and parsnips and 2 tiny potatos. The beef was sliced so thin, it belonged on a sandwich in a school canteen. In fairness, the yorkshire pudding was lovely and the meal looked good on the plate. I visited last april, the food was great and the portions were huge, however it seems they have halved portions since then? Don’t recommend unless you have the appetite of a small child, essentially paid £17 for a plate of cabbage haha

Food was average, ok but made me feel like I should have done some research before deciding where we went for lunch. So, not great. Service, absolutely shocking. Honestly, I have never been met with such aggression in any establishment. I was taken aback. I hadn't even asked any 'special' requests at this point. When I did, of course, I got no satisfaction. (I asked for some mash for my baby, but no can do). Employee (Brent?) might just need a day off or a hug! Would not return. We ate as a couple here on Friday night. It was very busy and staff seemed a little stressed as their card machine was down so everyone had to pay via cash. Luckily they told us this on arrival so after a quick dash to the cash machine, it was no problem. A few pros and cons: +We hadn’t reserved but were quickly shown to a table. +The decor is lovely and very tastefully done. +Good range of dishes on the menu, including vegetarian options. +We both opted for a pie. One, steak and ale and the other a cheese and onion. Both delicious! -Food seemed to take quite some time to come out even though by this point the dining area wasn’t very busy. -We both thought the portion size could have been bigger e.g. some fresh vegetables rather than a pot of mushy peas. It all tasted lovely just wish there had been more for the price. -After some larger groups had left the dining area fell very quiet, some background music would be good. Overall a pleasant meal and a special mention for the ginger bearded fellow behind the bar, he was very friendly 😊

We came back for an evening meal almost a year after we had been and enjoyed a lunch here. We were only in bowness for 3 nights and I wish we had chosen somewhere else to eat. The Cumberland sausage was an embarrassing attempt at a normal portion size. The mash and veg underneath it was obviously reheated or kept warm for some time. How does one tablespoon of mash and a spoon of carrots equate to an evening meal costing upwards of £17?? It was embarrassing. My partner has this and I had the burger, I felt so bad he was starving I gave him half of mine. We were asked at the bar when paying the bill if everything was ok and we said no, not really, it was a tiny portion of food. The poorly trained young lady behind the bar didn’t even address it, she just exclaimed “oh…” pathetic for a business. I don’t know who owns this place but they’ve clearly just employed staff at minimum wage and customer enjoyment/service is way down on their list of priorities. In contrast we went to the pub across the road and it was way better value and I think they will be in business way longer than the flying pig! Can you tell we won’t be returning??

Had a really good lunch here last year so decided to come back this year and had an evening meal. Massively disappointed by the small plate portion masquerading as a main meal. Cumberland sausage on a small spoonful of mash, a few carrots lazily added and a splash of gravy. Also there was no veg substitute option offered and they had a poor selection of ales. Place has gone downhill and clearly trading on a previous reputation, rather than testing if they’re value for money. Staff were also ill equipped and disinterested in my response of no, when asked if everything was ok as I was met with a blank look. Plenty of other places in the town to eat and suggest anyone who wants an appropriately portioned and quality evening meal crosses the road to the Albert.

Absolutely not worth coming here for the food. I ordered a superfood salad with halloumi as an extra. It was missing the quinoa and almonds and generally what was served was a poor excuse for what was claimed to be a superfood salad. A pile of soggy, tasteless couscous and about 10 pomegranate seeds. The dish included 2 florets of overcooked broccoli and 2 lumps of halloumi indelicately dropped on top of the couscous and rendered barely edible with dollops of some kind of mustard dressing rather than the lemon dressing that was promised on the menu. My husband had ribs on which was very little meat. This place seems to ride on location, serving a captive audience of tourists poor quality food with no need to work towards securing repeat business. Go somewhere else! One thing that this place did have going for it - there was a young boy serving and he really did graft! So helpful and hard-working.

Excellent traditional pub in a beautiful location. Very friendly and helpful staff. Good choice of food. Only downside was the wait. Would definitely recommend.

A great bar to have a drink on a Saturday afternoon. Shame that it was so popular that there was a 40 minute wait for food. We were hungry so couldn’t wait sorry, but the food looked good.

Food is mediocre at best and overpriced. Service was efficient but apathetic. Won’t be returning. Don’t waste your money.

Nice food. Pricier than some places but for its location and quality, I didn't mind paying. A couple of cask ales on and friendly staff. Unfortunately, we had a long wait before our order was taken and had to chase them up while our toddler was getting restless.

Delicious food, great staff and a delicious IPA from a local brewery. I highly recommend. Today (14.12.24) we were here again, a lot has changed unfortunately for the worse.. the chef has definitely changed and you can feel it in the taste, not all beers are available.. a different atmosphere, fewer guests.. and the food, kind of average..

Really nice food, staff were great. There was a lad with long-ish hair who served us and he was very friendly and nice. Pigs in blankets in duvets starter was amazing, so was my lamb stew, it just wasn't big enough!

We live locally so thought we'd check out the bar refurbishment as the new menu looked promising. Only one person on service, no one could confirm what was in the vegetable soup of the day so not wanting to risk it with my pepper allergy I opted for the chicken cob salad 🥗 basic is the only way to describe it and charging about £12 is unforgivable for a boiled egg, packet chicken and a few sliced tomatoes. Steak pie was awful that my partner ordered and my gluten free friend got two slices of gf bread with cold chicken and a slice of unmelted cheese calling itself a toastie. Will not be back. If you have taste buds avoid this and go to Comida or Bangkok 7 for food that is worth the money and made with love & care. A pint on the balcony in the sun is nice but don't go here for a meal.

November 2024 : An outstanding pub/hotel in the lake district peninsulas between Grange over sands and Ulverston. I booked the room online, the website is very informative. Theres a large free carpark at the back. The rooms are amazing, large double bed (could of been a queen size) an open wardrobe with hangers and a hairdryer. A fridge with milk and Harrogate water. And tea, coffee and hot chocolate to choose from. Theres a nice size TV to watch from the bed. In the bathroom theres a power shower, plenty of towels, creme soaps and shampoos to use. Downstairs is a lovely country pub, well decorated and looked after. After noticing the large specials board theres too many to choose from so a return trip it will be. Everyone recommends the fish and chips (the fish is massive) however i was also told about the home made pie. Basically whatever you choose will be amazing. A big thank you to the owners and ALL the staff for looking after me hopefully I will be back again on my travels. 2/1/25 Back again and so soon, I just cant stay away, and I'd just like to say what an experience it is to stay and eat at The Phesant. I was in a slightly bigger room (3) this time with a nice picturesque view of the fields and passing road. The specials sounded excellent but I went for the Fish & Chips this time, and it certainly lives up to all the recommendations i had heard. Tasty fish in a light crispy batter, whats not to love.
