If we look at this place purely on the quality of food, selection of drinks, it is nothing special then. However, add the atmosphere, the location and how cozy it is, when not over crowded, you will get my favourite pub experience in London. For me the grapes oddly feels like a second home away from home, especially upstairs, it is a perfect place for a conversation with the view of the Thames in the background. If you want a real pub experience, this is a very good place to go to!

We wanted to come with a baby and they turned us down, stating they could only allow children over 18. I can understand that they would be worried about the potential nuisance of a baby crying to other customers but turning down a 3 month old baby on these grounds is taking the law a bit too literally. I won't go back.

I found it somewhat surprising to see the state of this "renown" pub, especially given the connection to its famed co-owner, Sir Ian McKellan. I went there with 5 others, after waiting for over a year to get there to see this well regarded spot and enjoy dinner and drinks with friends between Xmas and NY's. We spent quite a bit, so I feel I can leave a honest review having sampled most of what was on offer. As for the place itself, I expected something smart, yet special, different and charming. even fru-fru, glam, posh, elegant - you know, aspects of style that one associates with gay men with talent, education and good taste. The Grapes has little of that, but I gave it a chance to charm me with it's quirkiness. In the end it did not. The impression I had was run down, daggy, dim, grim, dirty and old, in need of a desperate overhall, or at the least a damn good clean. (Do NOT go into the male loo if you don't want a shock of the sensory type; disgusting in every manner and that wasn't just a temporary issue I am sure - it's the way they keep it.) The food was complimented by us all. The risotto was very tasteful - of the 6 of us, we ordered 4 portions of risotto and the 4th came out served flat and sloppy on the plate whereas the other 3 were heaped high and not soggy looking. It did taste good however. Bottom of the pot perchance ? As for the staff - not much nice to be said there - what with one very sarcastic and quite unpleasant large bartender person of female gender, who could only just be a little more pleasant than one particular smart-alec female patron (friend of said barwoman?) sitting on a stool with a few other patrons; she seemed to enjoy repeating whatever someone ordered in a snarky manner - for no apparent reason. Being gay, there's no way I'd present my own pub like the Grapes is presented. I was sad and questioned how can it be that Sir Ian, who has a good rep and fama, allows this. He lives just two doors down, so it can't be like he can't pop in and see for himself. I think it not worthy of a return visit. There are other equally historic and far more charming original non-chain pubs in Wapping. Hit them instead. Sorry Sir Ian, but you've taken your eye of the ball with this one and it's quite sad to say so.

Did the pub quiz which was fun but unless you’re sat very near the quizmaster you can’t hear the questions - perhaps they could get speakers around the pub as this did ruin it. A couple of the staff are quite rude and moody. The pub itself is nice though.

Disappointing first visit to this pub after reading such good reviews. Ordered the three meat pie and chips which was actually very tasty but so dry. Asked if they serve any jugs of gravy but the person serving was quite dismissive. Very overpriced at nearly £18 a portion. This pub either needs to serve better quality food or reduce portion prices.

It’s been a while since I have been to the city and I can honestly say The Grapes isn’t going draw me back again. The barman could only be described, at the very best, as lack lustre. In his defence, whoever interviewed him and subsequently trained him, needs a swift and succinct talking to. The difficulty ordering a “Chardonnay”, a little known grape based beverage, should have given the game away. Trying to order the food proved to be a bridge too far and we had to leave for a hostel with staff that are better trained, not lounging with earbuds and where menu items were, available. The location, decor and beer aside, someone needs to get a grip of their Saturday service. The local Wetherspoons proved a much tastier and easier challenge and, it speaks volume that this much maligned chain outperformed The Grapes in every aspect of of this particular area of the hospitality industry🤷‍♂️

We tasted snacks. Drinks include beer and wine. Chicken with a crispy crust, not overcooked. Meat dumplings are delicious. I won't comment on the donuts because I'm not a big fan of goat cheese, so the assessment would be subjective. After tasting, the taste of the cheese is very intense. Paired well with wine. I will definitely stop by again when I'm in London.

Six of us decided to go for the Monday night quiz. Being a tiny pub, one of us had to go there at 4 o’clock in order to make sure we had a table. Otherwise by 8 o’clock when the quiz starts is standing room only. The food was good and so was the beer. Being a small place the noise was at an extreme high level. Still it was fun - even though some people thought it was appropriate to cheat by using their phones to get the right answers for the quiz. Given the amount of misinformation going on on line, however, I don’t think it was much help.

Although we couldn't stay, since it was full, just by entering we could appreciate how authentic it is. I hope I can go when we return to London.

My daughter and I had so much fun here. Joanne was the best barmaid, attentive, funny with lovely stories! I loved the fish and chips with the mushy peas. Being an American, I got advice on what I should eat while in London! I promise to try the Victorian Sponge! Quiz night was a blast!

Booked the karaoke for a party and was very impressed. Really great atmospheres in each of the karaoke rooms, huge song choice, and nice pub atmosphere on the ground floor below. Staff were very helpful too. Also very reasonably priced compared to some of the ridiculously expensive options in London. 5/5 would recommend

I feel like we went to a different restaurant to everyone else. The food was very average for the price point. We had the Sutton hoo and beef and mushroom pie and a dessert of bakewell tart which tasted very much like a treacle tart. It was also quite slow service that we were on the verge of cancelling the dessert as it had been over half an hour. Maybe it was just a bad day for the kitchen?
