The Hourglass in Wiltshire

We booked as a party of 12 for lunch to celebrate a BIG birthday. We’d never been before but it was recommended and was fairly central for those of us who had to travel. As is often the way our group expanded and contracted but Shannon at The HourGlass took it all in her stride. The greeting was very good and our tables were exactly what we expected. I’ll happily give the food 5 stars, we had a variety of starters and mains and all got the thumbs up. My Ceylon Lamb Curry was excellent- I also ‘helped out’ with the Hanging Kebab ( hope I’ve remembered correctly) very nice and all were generous portions. The chefs and kitchen crew can have a pat on the back.The staff were excellent and looked after us well.

I always loved coming to the HG when Jim ran the pub. However, since the new owners have taken over, the changes have not all been good 😞 The quality of the food is still excellent. But, no accompaniments with the steak, no mushrooms, onion rings, nothing. So, it is £30 for a basic steak with a few chips. My wife had the lamb curry. Again the quality is good. But not so much as a poppadom on the side. This is a shame, as we love the pub and the staff. But, cutting out the sides on meals while charging top prices will not win customer loyalty

I've been to the Hourglass a number of times before and always had a great experience. I booked a family pre-Christmas lunch for 8. The website said it had changed hands but, based on the menu online, I was confident of another great eating experience, particularly as there were several veggie and vegan options. However, the menu we were given at the table bore no resemblance to that online and only 1 veggie/vegan option per course. It was a disappointment, particularly as I'd raved about the food choices prior to booking. The restaurant was cold, even the servers were hugging the radiator when not serving. The servers were friendly but not knowledgeable about the menu and didn't know what an Irish coffee was. Meal portion sizes were varied. The turkey roast was huge but the risotto was tiny. Not sure I'll go there again.

Popped on for Sunday lunch to find it has recently changed hands , team working on that day where friendly and welcoming, unfortunately the Sunday lunch was not good a s the previous ones we had there which is a disappointment. That say we will try again for the non Sunday Menu

Great service, good food and atmosphere.

Delicious warm quinoa salad with bits and goodies! But if you want a peaceful meal, then this is not the place for that. Great service, friendly staff! This must be an extremely busy place in the summer, as it's stunningly situated on the waterside!

Cam and the team were really attentive and the food was really nice. We were there for my Dad's 60th birthday and there was about 14 of us, we all really enjoyed it. Want to try the Sunday lunch next time we come!

This was our first time coming here after a Sunday afternoon walk. Lovely location and atmosphere beside the canal. 10/10 food, drinks and service. Great value. Will definitely return and highly recommend.

Having been here many times in the past as the previous owners were lovely people we thought we’d check it out again and we weren’t disappointed. Service by Lou was extremely friendly and efficient as always. The food was just as good as it has been and we will be back again very soon😊

Great food and service. I had cause to visit twice recently and the food was tasty and enjoyable. Friday evening was a little busier with great atmosphere, offering a welcoming place to meet friends for a drink or something to eat. The staff were very friendly and attentive. Both visits were exactly what was needed by our party. Thank you Hourglass team.

Came across this place online so decided to try it out and I have to say it was a fantastic experience, couldn't fault anything. Upon arrival the staff were very friendly and welcoming and we had a nice table overlooking the canal. The food was unbelievably yummy and very filling 😋. We had the lunch menu and I have to say it didn’t disappoint, so much so I think we will be going back next week. There was a nice choice on the menu and although we were full we still squeezed in a pudding. They are very accommodating if you have any food allergies or restrictions which I thought was really good too. Nothing was too much trouble for them, 10/10 for the chef and staff. I would definitely recommend this place 😊 thankyou for a lovely experience x

1st visit, certainly not our last! Came here on Saturday with my wife for lunch. We didn't book so arrived for doors open and got a table overlooking the canal. Great menu choice and fantastic service. A young dark haired girl with glasses served us and she was so lovely and very attentative and on the ball. The hanging kebab skewer was amazing too, as we're the chocolate sundae puddings. Highly recommended this place

Visited here today for lunch having not been before. Very welcoming upon arrival and quickly shown to a table overlooking the canal. Great menu choice and really genuinely lovely staff. The young lady serving us (wearing black glasses) was first class too. Opted for the kebab skewer and it was amazing. Definitely recommend and so good we will be going again next week

We Have only Been there Twice but Both time the Food is Very Good & the Staff & Owner were Very Friendly & Helpful. The Wine List has A Nice Selection of Different wine to Choose from. Will Definitely be Going Back Soon. Location is Excellent next to the Canal.

Friendly reception. Modern restaurant section but still has little corners and hideaway. The menu is different with some old pub classics.... the kebabs are awesome. Fish and chips were good. Could do with a few more real ales but good place to visit

Best place for a roast in Wiltshire.

Popped in for lunch the food was all really good, the fish finger ciabatta and camembert starter were both great. Will be going in for lunch again.

We popped into the Hourglass on our way home from our son's sky dive. We called before as there was 10 of us, we certainly wasn't disappointed by the service or food, the waitress's were incredibly helpful and completely understood our needs and the Sunday lunch was amazing and so tasty... definitely will pop Back and a 10 Out of 10 From us all!! Looked at the menu online before we booked. A really good selection for Vegetarian and Vegan diets. It's a lovely venue on the banks of the canal. The atmosphere is relaxed. The staff are friendly. The food is delicious. We had a lovely evening and will definitely visit again. 😋

Beautiful pub with lovely views over the canal but over priced and when asked where to smoke was told there were chairs etc past the veranda in the car park … turns out it was a 2 person standing smoking shelter … so if you smoke avoid as you can’t relax. 2 pints of Peroni £12.20. Didn’t eat but the food did look nice. Wouldn’t come again.

Great place to eat, bit expensive but you get what you pay for, just had chips but very large portions and was enough to share for 2 people.

Had a Sunday Lunch here with the family. We had booked at the last minute but what a lovely surprise. Fantastic friendly staff and even though it was busy, they were very attentive. Fantastic food and really good value, and even more roast potatoes and gravy if wanted. Best roast dinner I have had in along time with lots of very tasty vegetables. We will definitely be back soon

Fabulous pub with fantastic food and hospitable landlords located in a delightful spot by the canal.

After visiting the area we were keen to get a roast dinner and phoned a few places that had already stopped serving. We phoned the Hour Glass who booked us in and when we arrived were made to feel welcome with very friendly staff. Our roast dinners were amazing with a good variety of vegetables alongside the traditional trimmings. To be honest we found the jewel today! So glad we stumbled across this place on the canal. Fabulous!

The title says everything: beautiful spot by the water, last-minute booking for 10 people was no problem at all, excellent food (we loved the Eton Mess) but the best experience was the kind and friendly staff, all beautiful people! It was the best finish from our holiday week in the UK. Next time we're back in Wiltshire we will definitely drop in. With love from The Dutchies

Rather disappointing experience after a spontaneous visit on Friday night. Wagyu burger and Halloumi burger were decent but greasy onion rings and tiny portions of chips and coleslaw didn't impress for a meal that cost close to £20 each.

Had a brilliant time at the hour glass,had an amazing waitress never caught her name unfortunately but she the short slim blonde waitresses , she was very nice and complimented my fiancee and was extremely nice to talk to and helpful The food was 10/10 the pork belly bites was 💯 and was even offered some extra potatoes by a kind gentleman serving tables, Food 💯 Staff 💯

Lovely Sunday roast but quite expensive

Wonderful place, visited today Sunday with 14 guest booked ahead all had roasts was lovely lots of flavour, staff and service was fantastic. Plenty of food lovely view fantastic

Was v much looking forward to a couples lunch before the children finished school for the summer. We walked with two dogs and sat outside. We have always had excellent service; so friendly and attentive. Waited for menus or to be greeted with a drinks order but nothing! Gave up and ordered inside. Very slow service but goid excellent. No one took any furthur drinks orders nor asked us about the food. No water for our dogs. Other people waited for ages outside also being ignored. Won't return, wish I'd spent £55 elsewhere. Service was most definitely without a smile

Great pub along side the river. Seating inside and outside. Tables are spread out so it feels spacious and tidy. We went on Sunday for a roast and was not disappointed! Food was spot on and plenty of it, had cauliflower cheese along side our plates and was offered extra roasties at the beginning too! Lovely place, lovely staff, lovely food 😁

Absolutely wonderful Sunday lunch, we both had pork loin and it was delicious. Great service and staff were very friendly. Gentleman even came out offering extra roast potatoes. We were looking forward to trying a dessert but unfortunately didn’t have any room, the lunch filled us both up! Would highly recommend though.

We decided to try here after not having visited in over 4 years. We booked the table online which was quick and easy and when we got there were greeted straight away and taken to our table. We had to wait a while to order our drinks and again another while to order our food as there was a big party in which was explained to us. When the food arrived though it was well prepared presented and delicious with one of out party saying it was the best Fish and Chips he'd had in a very long time. Well worth a visit (the hanging kebabs which we didn't order looked amazing when they were taken out to other customers, maybe next time)

The Hourglass hosted my 65th Birthday dinner with close friends and family, the service, food and atmosphere was absolutely perfect and our hosts Jim & Karen and there team were absolutely amazing and went well "above and Beyond" to ensure we all had a FAB time, and without exception all 20 of my guests were of the same view, I would be happy to recommend them and the venue to anyone......Once again thankyou Team Hourglass

Went to a wedding reception there. I cannot fault. Highly recommended

Drove in from Swindon to meet a friend. Stopped at the entrance to be told “sorry we are closed for a wedding” I asked why there was no message on website, Response was “oh there should be” wasted my time and they couldn’t care less. Safe to say we will not be returning.

Sadly underwhelmed by the experience. The initial greeting and taking of our order was great and the mains were pretty good. The desserts were very sickly and the sticky toffee puddings sauce was undercooked (completely clear) and had no flavour. We were there for an hour and a half and weren't asked at any time if the food was nice or offered another drink. We would of had another round if offered, at one point the waitress cleared our glasses and still didn't ask. I know we could of asked, but you really shouldn't have to. Then we asked for the bill which was brought over but with no option to pay, just walked off. 5 minutes later we just put the cash by the till. Really felt like we were forgotten about, which at 6pm at a time when most tables were empty isn't acceptable. As a final point, it places it's price point for food at the top end for pubs (£20 for a burger and chips), but the kids meal rather bizzarely comes with a pudding of a fab ice lolly. When you take your kids out for a nice meal, a couple of scoops of ice cream or a small portion of pudding would be much nicer.

Had Sunday lunch 70th birthday celebration here with friends. All though there quite a few of us there, the meal was served hot and in a timely manner. Service was excellent. we will be visiting again and we have already recommended the Hourglass to our family and friends. Well done

A rare place in Devizes actually beside the canal. Small parking zone. Great atmosphere. Great food. Easy to walk to from the town along the canal.

We love visiting the Hourglass, great atmosphere and very friendly owners & staff. It's also dog friendly. Plenty of seating both inside & outside. Nice scenery by the canal. Food is great and we love the selection of drinks too - great selection of Thatchers cider on draught & they serve the best gins in town! They serve their gins with all of the nice touches such as fruit, cucumber thins, elderberries & it just elevates the gin & the experience.

Best place for a sunny glass of wine, a hearty Sunday roast and a delicious evening meal!

Amazing. Everything about the experience was 10/10. The server was incredible, she knew everything there was to know and clearly believed in their food. The building was clean and modern, but still homely. We sat outside on their terrace overlooking the river and rolling fields. And their gluten free options were endless, they even had gluten free vinegar!! Even though we’re over an hour away, we will definitely be returning. (Both pictures were of their gluten free food)

We enjoyed an extraordinary wonderful meal here late afternoon yesterday. The welcome was like returning to an old friend - this was our first visit here - varied menu to choose from - my husband had the tandoori kebab which was amazing and I had a small fish dish from children's menu. Both were delicious and for dessert I had an Eton Mess which was amazing and partner had honeycomb cheesecake which was absolutely great! Lovely location by the river. We shall try to return in the future but as we live approx two hour drive away - it will have to be for another weekend stay!

Party of 4 - where do I start with a review! A good steak is just a good steak and we had two of them but what made this a great meal was the superb service! Asked for a ‘blue’ steak and that’s what the chef cooked - lots of chefs will continue to serve up rare but not on this occasion. Steak sauces delicious!! Massive portion of eton mess. The owners were amazing and the personal ‘banter’ is worth going for on its own. Will be returning and thoroughly recommend

Hidden gem! This is a lovely little restaurant tucked away next to the canal and truly is a hidden gem. Beautifully presented restaurant with a nice outside patio area and friendly welcoming staff. We attended a family birthday meal here, a table of 17. All the food came out together, all hot and delicious. Staff all very helpful and attentive. 100% recommended and will definitely return.

We were recommended to this place. We had Sunday lunch it was very busy but service was good. Our food arrived the roast potatoes were very dry and not crispy, we were offered replacements, these were also dry and hard. The green vegetable's were cold and inedible. We did complain but no one came to ask the issues. The venue was very noisy and was hard to hear our own conversations. A very average meal, basic pub food.

We visited for dinner on Easter Sunday as a member of our family was celebrating her birthday. From the moment we arrived we were very impressed with everything about the HG. We were warmly welcomed and shown to our table. A lovely young lady came immediately to take our drinks order, and these were served very quickly. The food on offer was a choice of several different roast meats, with a few other options available. We all opted for a roast dinner. I personally had the roast beef which was very tender and absolutely delicious ….i’d say it was the best roast dinner I have ever eaten in a pub! It came with a selection of vegetables, great roast potatoes and a big dish of cheesy leeks for us all to share. The landlord brought extra roast potatoes to the table part way through our meal which was very welcome. We had desserts which were also delicious and beautifully presented. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the HG. Great food, a good atmosphere and fantastic service by all the lovely staff. Thank you!

Set outside on the deck overlooking the river with a slight chill in the air in April. Very nice and relaxing, comfortable and clean. Staff were very happy to help and very welcoming. Food was brought out with good time in between starters and the main meal. And that was the problem, there was just so much food that we couldn't finish it. Fantastic food, very well presented. With two courses and a few drinks it was one of the most expensive lunches I've ever had but I have to say it was very much worth it. Unfortunately it is 30 minutes away from where we are but if we were to go again I think we would skip the starter and just have the main lunch as that is more than enough food. We're all vegetarian and there were options for all of us as well as some vegan ones.

They have a jar of dog treats. Now I can't walk my dog past the pub without him wanting to come in for a pint......I mean treat!

Amazing Friendly pub , we arrived early and sat on the deck - you have to visit lovely please to sit and watch the world - well barges go by x Dinner was stunning all fresh local produce . large portion side of creamed leek included and gravy boat too x will definitely be back x Highly recommend

We had a party of 23 people, the hourglass didn’t hesitate to accommodate us. The food came out all at the same time, piping hot and super tasty. No complaints here! Can’t fault the service or the staff, we will definitely be returning to try the rest of the menu 😊👏🏼

A return to the hour glass for a family Sunday lunch. Service was timely, food was of a consistant high standard for the 3 courses, and the waiting staff very polite and friendly. Highly recommended for an enjoyable experience at a reasonable price. The lady in red is soooo nice 👌 👍 🥰

A fantastic venue tastefully appointed, with extremely friendly staff, great atmosphere and superb food. If you're feeling up for a challenge go for the deceptively named 'baby ribs' because small they are not. Add a slab of delicious ribs to fries, coleslaw, corn on the cob, onion rings and BBQ beans and you have a pile of delicious food. Lou greeted us, showed us to our table and looked after us extremely well for the evening - nothing was too much trouble for her. Throughly recommend this place and will definitely keep going back.

We had a beautiful mother's day on Sunday there was 9 of us all had starters which were very tasty, selection of different Roasts all really good extra roasts potatoes plenty of gravy. The service was fantastic as always. Mother's had a complimentary presco and home-made chocolates when we left. I highly recommend the hourglass thank you Jim, Karen and all the team for a lovely lunch xxxx

We were greeted by a lovely and welcoming young lady. Drinks order taken and received them very quickly. I had the chicken and my partner had the steak, absolutely divine, cooked with care and presented very well. Lovely and friendly staff, great ambience. Another amazing roast lunch at the Hourglass! We’ve visited several times for Sunday lunch since December and the quality of food, service and ambience has been consistently high on every occasion. The most delicious roast lunch I’ve eaten out. On top of the generous portion, we are always offered extra roast potatoes, extra gravy. Staff are attentive and friendly. We made a last minute booking at the Hour Glass to have a Sunday Roast with our sons - so glad we did! From the time we entered to the time we left, we were treated with the utmost care and attention by friendly but professional staff. The restaurant/bar is tastefully decorated, with an ambience missing in many other restaurants. All four of us ordered the roast dinner - a choice of four different meats. All four meals looked and tasted delicious. A wide variety of vegetables, a Yorkshire pudding, and an abundance of crispy roast potatoes, gravy, and accompanying sauces. Prices are very reasonable, food beautifully presented, and staff bobbing about with extra potatoes and gravy. I've since found out that this is an independent pub/restaurant, with the owners very visible, working alongside their cheerful staff to ensure a really great experience! For us it definitely had the WOW factor in every area. Toilets very clean and welcoming, general atmosphere buzzing:)

The family came for a roast dinner! Best roast dinner we've had out in a long time. Well priced, big portion size, great tasting and great quality. Owners are super friendly and attentive. Excellent service and value for money. Highly recommend!

We had to wait for our 3pm booked table, as a party over ran. The host was polite, and helpful. Our food came after about 30 minutes wait. The whole meal was delicious, great flavours, exceptional gravy extra roasties offered and superb staff. Recommend.

Had the most fantastic roast dinner here today and I just had to leave a review to say WOW! It was like having a home cooked roast and the whole experience was amazing from start to finish! I work in hospitality myself so dining out is a rarity as I am usually the other side of the table. I would recommend the Hourglass to anyone wanting a home from home experience. The perfect Sunday lunch was had with a close friend and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Will definitely be back soon.

The Hourglass in Devizes exceeded our expectations in every way! Meeting halfway between Tetbury and Bournemouth, we were initially nervous, having a Salisbury restaurant tradition. However, Jim and his team provided an amazing experience. The mushrooms as starters were heavenly, and my steak, along with my husband and friend's kebabs, were truly delicious. The service was excellent, and the added bonus of country music created a fantastic ambiance. The highlight was being able to contribute to the playlist at the end of the night. We felt incredibly well-treated and had an unforgettable time. The perfect food ensures we'll be returning for more! Good food and service although the main dishes were all a little cold by the time we got them. However, the whole area was too dark though. All very nice ambient lighting but you need to be able to see! I needed to get my phone torch out a couple of times!

Popped here with some friends last night. Haven't been in years so wasn't sure what to expect. Glad we came as the food was incredible, huge portions and the pork belly kebab was lovely! We couldn't finish all the food so they offered to wrap it for us to take home. Friendly atmosphere and staff were great.

Phoned up for a reservation at short notice & had a table for three at 1230 half an hour after I phoned. Once at the pub served by a lovely polite woman who could not of been nicer. Myself, my partner & my stepfather. Were served with very well presented, hot tasty food & I will definitely be going back soon. If your looking for good food & good service. I don't think you can go wrong by going to the hourglass in Devizes.

The Hourglass was a perfect venue for a family gathering of 17 people. The food was delicious (huge portions!) Myself and my daughter have coeliac disease so are always very wary eating out but we were assured that our meal choices were gluten free (avoiding any cross contamination). No illness afterwards so we were very happy and will definitely return. Massive thanks to the friendly team at The Hourglass!

We love the Hourglass, the staff always so friendly and nothing is ever too much. We have eaten in the restaurant many times and often pop in for a drink and always have a lovely time. This time we booked the upstairs function room for our Christmas party and it was the perfect space. We had a festive hot and cold buffet with Prosecco arrival table and it was fantastic. We will definitely be looking to use the function room again.

With a party of 30 friends today, but unable to eat my meal due to tooth problem. What fantastic, helpful service. Despite not offering take-away the staff put my pre- ordered meal into containers I bought from home so that my housebound husband could enjoy my meal. I cannot thank them enough for their kindness and service. The food was delicious and I would thoroughly recommend these lovely people.
