Such a pretty old building on the High St Brading. Can't think why we never found it before but the welcome was warm , the staff were friendly and efficient and the food was superb! Difficult to get a Sunday roast just right but they nailed it ! From the meat to the veg and the giant Yorkshires everything was generous and perfectly cooked and just as a traditional home cooked meal should be.

2 couples visited on Sunday at 3 pm .The men had the beef roast which was excellent but the ladies ordered chilli which was a choice of only 2 alternative meal choices. The chilli meals consisted of very large lumps of tough beef on a bed of rice. Both ladies agreed that their meals,at £17 each, were the worst they had ever had in a restaurant with such a good reputation. We are Islanders and visit restaurants all over the island and reckon the roasts were the best yet but the chilli's really let it down. The service was really good.

My husband and I went to this restaurant purely because we were on holiday and found ourselves in the area. What a find! We had the most delicious meal, cooked beautifully and very generous portions. The staff were great, very friendly yet still respectful and Dean who was serving us was funny and efficient. We later spoke to the chef Stuart who again was very friendly. We were only on the island for a week but went back to the Hungry bear for Sunday lunch which was amazing, one of the best we have had, not only generous but every bit of it was cooked to perfection. If we lived on the island we would definitely be regulars here, even though it was a way from where we were staying, well worth the journey. We wholeheartedly recommend this place, relaxed and friendly with excellent food, what more could you want.

The Esplanade
Not sure why this is getting such high reviews. Speaking for us 2 vegetarians firstly limited choice. But then food didn't seem to match descriptions. I had an onion squash mozzarella stack. If any mozzarella in there no sign of it. Indeed the whole stack seemed more cooked for people with no teeth. Just pap. Sauce improved it. Meant to be with hassleblad potatoes, but not like any I've know. Just a couple new potatoes baked dry in oven and sliced with an egg slice. Our other dish was meant to be a mushroom stroganoff with tagliatelle. I know a contradiction in terms. Rubbish tomato sauce over tinned mushrooms with the pasta. Sticky toffee pudding similarly badly done. Hey ho. Back to the hotel.

4 Church RoadWe have been here many times over the years and looked forward to our visit again this year. What a disappointment. We had a cream tea which consisted of a pot of tea, 2 scones, butter, cream and jam. The jam and cream pots were half the size they used to be and the butter was barely there, adequate enough for one scone but certainly not two. The jug of milk supplied did not have enough milk for one cup of tea and we had to ask for extra. I do not drink tea and asked for my tea to be substituted with coffee, big mistake, it was undrinkable. Went we went to pay we were told 'cash only' and I was lucky to find some cash in the bottom of my bag. This should be made clear when you enter and before you order as a lot of people do not carry cash. Our experience was so different to every other visit we wondered if there were 'new owners' but overheard the owner telling other visitors that she had been there 17 years. Sadly will not be returning.

28 High StreetGood size meals, especially breakfasts. Good cuppa, no frills just true value, friendly staff. I would visit again and recommend this café.

2 Eastcliff RdStopped for a cream tea which the wife enjoyed. Usual 2 scones provided with jam and clotted cream and a good pot of tea. They normally do Gluten Free cream tea but due to high demand had sold out of GF scones. They were however able to supply GF cheese scones so I had a savoury version of cream tea, 2 GF cheese scones, a tomato chutney and a cream cheese. Was very nice and would recommend.
