The Jasmine Tree in Sefton

I visited this restaurant in early December with my friend, were were after a relaxing few hours and a great restaurant experience not had chinese for a while. When we entered the restaurant we noticed how cold the temperature was, it was only 6pm so we thought maybe but hadn't been open long. We ordered a beer each from the waitress and then very soon after was asked 3 times if we were Ready to order , a bit pressured we thought. Also the wine list had disappeared from the table and had to ask twice for it. We ordered our banquet and awaited our soup, this was tasteless, iv never had to add salt to chicken & Sweetcorn soup! Our red wine arrived and it was freezing cold! I mentioned this to the waitress and she said "well it's not been in the fridge". Our combination course of ribs, spring rolls and seaweed was really nice but the mains were not, tough pork balls and chewy chicken. Untill we asked for a break the meal was very rushed. We didn't enjoy the experience and won't be returning.

We visited tonight for the first time, we had the early bird menu, plus duck and pancakes, followed by banana fritters, it was delicious. We will definitely return.

Called in on the off chance, a group of 6, and luckily the large table was free. Very welcoming staff from arrival to departure. We had Set menu B which was well priced and included all the favourites. Plenty of food for the 6 of us. Drinks well priced. Service was efficient. Yes we will return

We have been attending this restaurant under various ownership for the past 45 years, Good Friday (2022). Never had a bad meel nor bad service.

We always order from here as the food is the best in town but the last two orders have been very disappointing. We order the same thing pretty much every time so it's noticeable things have changed. The peking spring rolls are unseasoned and pretty tasteless and the casing is thicker. Two thirds of my salt and pepper chicken was dry, overcooked and stringy and the soft noodles were dry and tasteless. I can only assume the ownership/chefs have changed because we didn't have one meal before that was anything other than excellent but the last two have been half-eaten and binned, really disappointed.

Turned up without a booking, party of eight. Saturday night and busy but they made space for us with minimal fuss. Food was very tasty and service was great. Brilliant value too, definitely a positive experience, left happy!

This was our first visit for a couple of years - we hadn't been in due to the previous owners having left - and we were unsure what to expect. Our fears were unfounded. The interior had been spruced up, including the old carpet being replaced by wooden flooring and less tables, possibly due to Covid. The food was just as good with the staff attentive but not overbearing. We'll be back soon.

First time here, as we normally go to Cathay Garden. Not any more, as this is far superior. Generous portions without being overwhelming. Service very good. Excellent value. We will certainly be returning.

We ate here on Monday evening. Quite quiet, but it was early. The food was delicious and the staff were very attentive without being in your face. We will certainly go back when we visit Southport again.

A great little restaurant serving fresh, quality Chinese food. Hygiene standards are exceptional and staff are friendly and efficient. We had the early evening menu and it was great value for money. We visit on a regular basis and food is of a consistently high standard.

Visited this evening. Had the set menu. Spare ribs, wantons. Szechuan chicken, fried rice. Crispy duck pancakes, Ice cream . Drinks for two persons total price. £40.00. Service was friendly and efficient. Excellent food well worth the not extravagant price. I will return.

We had set menu ,very plentiful and taste, staff very professional and could not do enough to make your stay help. Every time someone went to toilets they would disinfect door handles .this was the first time we had seen this happen,credit keeping guests safe .100 % would we recommend this restaurant.

The Jasmine Tree is based just off Lord Street so it is very close to the main shopping areas. The food was very nice and the staff were polite and attentive. We were however the only people dining which, considering it was a fairly busy Bank Holiday, was a bit surprising. However we would definitely return as we felt it was good value for money. A hidden gem.

Lovely food hot and fresh.will definitely be back. Service was good a bit slow with mains but was worth waiting for.

I love the Jasmine tree restaurant!! Sadly they have either sold the restaurant or something big has happened? We had a takeaway last night that was £60 and consisted of only 2 main courses and 4 starters. The Jasmine tree has always been expensive but worth it in my opinion but not anymore!! The chicken & cashew nut main course was inedible, I still have the funny taste in my mouth the following morning after brushing my teeth 3 times the salt & pepper squid was the best in the uk, it was bloody amazing but again not anymore chewy and tough with the batter not very nice. I am actually gutted to be writing this review about one of my once favourite restaurants. I for one will never be going back after that performance, as I said I still have a weird taste in my mouth I can’t shift not good.

Visited this week for family meal. Slightly worried due to Covid and recent reviews (Had been before over year ago and loved) The restaurant has put in many measures Covid related, every table has a screen between, all cutlery comes in separate plastic wrapping, plenty of hand sanitizer and when anyone left each table and chair sprayed down. Couldn't fault the food, very tasty, well cooked and plenty crispy duck (we had the banquet) Waitress was very polite but kept her distance putting things down at arms length. We would definitely visit again and recommend. As stated by previous person decor and seating a bit dated but the restaurant has obviously spent on screens and other products for safety.

Dined here as a party of six, Saturday night, could find no fault with any aspect of our Evening, service first class as was the food, started with Hot and Sour soup which had a wonderful smokey under taste, followed with the mixed platter of Ribs, Wonton, Prawn Toast, Spring rolls and seaweed, all excellent but it has to be said the star of the show was the Ribs, some of if not the best i have had, Crispy Duck next, Tender, tasty and plenty of it, for mains Scallops in an Oyster sauce with Egg fried Rice, lovely light Sauce and the Scallops where cooked to perfection. If you are looking for great food at a very fair price then this is the place to come, the only very small criticism and its so small as to not affect the star rating is the resturant itself could do with a makeover as its decor is a little dated. But its the food you come here for and you will not be disappointed.

We went here Friday night as we were staying at the Lord Street Hotel round the corner. Everything started fine, friendly staff, great starter, and very good duck. Main courses were a little disappointing, but edible, we were not unhappy at this point.On the next table was a Mum & Dad and daughter in her very early 20's. The parents had bought her a bottle of Rose, whch she had finished. She rose from the table and announced she was going for a s**t.On her wobbly return she promptly fell asleep at the table for a few minutes and then threw up in the ice bucket at the table. We left immediately, horrified. I know the restaurant can't be blamed for bad parents, but they really should have been asked to leave after the s**t incident.

Got a take away christmas eve and never in my life have i ever had food so bad i had to throw it in the bin it was discusting and should never had been given to us ,will never go in again.

Tasteless and probably the worst meal I have had. Ling on Kings is the best followed by Cathay Garden.

Visited on Friday for early bird menu, i was not dissapointed, the food was fabulous, genorous portions, hot plates,( a must for me), hot food, tasty, nicely presented, good value, our waitress was great, chatty whilst not intrusive, all in all, a superb experience, will definitely be going again soon.

Ive been coming to the Jasmine Tree for many years and the quality of the food and the atmosphere in the restaurant is consistently good. You won’t find much better for Chinese food in Southport. Service is great and prompt.

Booked table for two, Saturday evening and enjoyed quality food, portions and reasonably priced including wine. Options of early bird menu or full menu. Had soup, spring rolls, bbq spare ribs, curry beef, sweet and sour chicken, rice and chips, and banana fritters. Restaurant filled up early so recommend reservation. Only thing I'd say is the waiters have prawn crackers on your table seconds after sitting down and seeking what you want to drink just as quick. Would have given 5 stars otherwise, just let your diners relax that's all. Will visit again.

I was staying in Sothport for a conference and decided to go for a chinese meal. Found this place on Trip Advisor and visited. Very friendly staff, made me feel welcome and had a very enjoyable meal. Excellant place.

To be honest I’m not really a fan of Chinese food and I really can’t bear hot food so I was hoping this visit with my friends would be a banquet so I could pick bits but no one of them spotted an early bird cheap meal so we were all tied in to that! This was a 3 course meal for less than £10 I think. Slightly limited choice but it seemed to suit with spring rolls, soups or seaweed to start followed by a variety of mains from which I had beef and green pepper in black bean sauce with rice or chips and then the usual fritters, lychees or ice cream for dessert. The portions are not huge and probably wouldn’t be enough if you have a large appetite but plenty for me and I actually quite liked it. Friends seemed to enjoy it too.

We were staying in the Lord Street Hotel and we're looking for somewhere to eat and just around the corner found this little gem. We got 3 courses for 12 pound as we arrived before 730pm. The food was of a high quality the fried rice and noodles were excellent and very tasty and the staff were very helpful

It’s been a long time since I’ve been to the Jasmine Tree but we decided to visit again for a birthday meal. It certainly won’t be a long time for my next visit.

Had a really good meal here. We had salt and pepper spare ribs. Cantonese spring rolls, char sui chow me in and crispy chilli beef. It was all delicious and very reasonably priced. Staff very pleasant and efficient.

Me and my partner came hear after umming and ahhhing over getting a Chinese when we visited Southport,being from Yorkshire dim sum is a rarity for some Chinese to do so I was highly delighted they had a good selection of dim sum so we had the steamed shu mi and pork char sui steamed buns both were exceptional for main we had two main a rice dish and a side portion of soft noodles the food was abundant and fresh we were both stuffed and very happy only suggestion is make is possibly offer a dim sum mix so people can try a little of a few rather than just a few of one

We had a selection of items off the menu. The food was very good and reasonably priced. Service was ok and we would probably visit again.

We often either eat or get a takeout here. It's always nice and they also do gluten free options - the gluten free lemon chicken is lovely.

Ordered a takeaway one of the meals a vegetarian meal, on collection she checked and said one chicken meal and one veggi, got home had a fork full of vermicelli and beansprouts and meat, the meal was full of meat and prawns, awful for a veggi, drove all the way back from ainsdale and got a replacement meal I expected a refund and replacement meal I said is that it she said all I can do is apologise sounded like a robot really unsincere. We'll that's not right, it's not the mistake but how they make up for it that matters, asked to see the usual guy and she said he doesn't work there anymore and under new management, they have just lost a customer and we have been goin there for 25 years, really really bad service and replacement meal awful, the worst meal I have ever had from there, so ruined our evening and we didn't end up eating together, I would not recommend to anyone now.

Four of us ate here for my daughter’s birthday. The food was excellent, the service friendly and efficient. Very good value for money too.

Visited this restaurant following reviews on TA and we was not disappointed, the staff where very friendly and welcoming, the food was outstanding and the best we have experienced in Southport, I can personally recommend a visit to the Jasmine Tree for an enjoyable evening with excellent cuisine.

Always excellent service at the Jasmine tree. The best Chinese restaurant in Southport imo. Great choice on the menu to suit everyone. Chinese curry is simply the best.

A quiet Monday and we searched for 'good food', 'good value' and 'friendly'. Ticked all the boxes. Noticed immediately that the clients mostly knew the owner and that he took time with everybody. I also learnt quite a bit about the island of Formosa and the role of Chiang Kai-shek.

Food excellent, small family run Chinese restaurant. staff very friendly making us feel welcome on our first visit. Husband asked for his main meal to be made spicier which they did. Lots of regulars were eating here which the staff knew by name. Will definitely return.

This Chinese restaurant in Union Street is traditional in style but it is brilliant on food, customer service and atmosphere. Food portions are generous and prices are very reasonable. The staff try to engage with all customers and obviously there is a good local clientele whom they know by name. When in Southport will definitely return. Highly recommended.

My husband and I came here for a meal to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary and we were not disappointed! Everything was first class from the food, the warm friendly service, the ambience, the decor, the cleanliness. We highly recommend this lovely place and will be back soon!

Went recently with family. The food pries I would say are average. The staff were very attentive and welcoming. The drink I couldn't comment on as someone else paid the bill. The place was very clean. The food there was too much of it but some was bagged to take home. It was a rainy night and the owner came over to chat to us whilst we were waiting for taxis. He was very friendly and insisted we should stay inside and he would look out for the taxis. All in all we couldn't fault the evening and will go back.

We love the jasmine tree. Found it by accident 20 years ago. Great food, great price and most of all great service. Theyve watched my family grow. We will continue to go there. Cant recommend enough.

Looking for somewhere to eat in Southport past 10pm is not as easy as you think. Finding most places already closed for the night, we were lucky to be close enough to Jasmine Tree so a short walk found us inside a bright, clean restaurant.

We called in for a meal at 1030 after seeing the restaurant was open till 11. There was about 6 people still there. Waiter looked shocked that we wanted a meal and said takeaway only. We went to the desk to be bluntly asked what we wanted to order which was a bit difficult as we hadn't even seen the menu. At that point I decided that this wasn't the sort of establishment I wanted to give my money to and left

This used to be our favourite Chinese Restaurant. However over the past few weeks the quality of the food has deteriorated. Also, on a recent take away order 3 items were missing and the food, apart from the ribs, wasn't up to scratch. We hope this is just a temporary blip and things can go back to the way they were.

Excellent choix, j'ai adorée le poulet croustillant au piment (aigre-douce). Le staff est très attentif et serviable.

Whenever we have a family get together we always order take out from The Jasmine Tree. There's an extensive menu and we have our favourites which the restaurant are willing to cook to our liking. Staff are really friendly.

I've been going to The Jasmin Tree many many years. My children have always known this as our family chinese restaurant. Now grown admittedly we don't go as often but it's always been delicious when we do! Not anymore!!! The main dishes have changed. No flavor. Bland and there's definitely a change in quality of ingredients. It's just not the same. Please speak to chef. Check the food yourselves. I was very disappointed. I hope it improves. My next visit I will say something as I test the food and report. I had a family emergency so couldn't last time. The staff are cool by the way. Attentive and chatty but leave you be too. Come on Jasmin Tree I'm rooting for you to return to your former glory.

The crispy chilli beef was to die for, a lovely meal overall and service was excellent! Definitely back when we come to Southport.

Have been to the Jasmine Tree and had takeaways many times over the years, but just recently have been twice and both times have not been good. Food has been very bland and the chicken and sweetcorn soup tasted floury, just like the chicken curry. (Was this made with the same recipe?) The beef and mushroom had no taste. Service was fair, but I wish the male waiter who served us wasn't as brusque and smiled occasionally. Its a shame really because this restaurant and its takeaways used to be a real favourite with our family, but won't be going again any time soon.

Fairly cheap. We had banquet A option. It was all very bland and average but not terrible. The staff are very wooden and invasive. They sort of "hand around" your table which is very annoying. Too many staff I suspect with very little to be doing. Not bad but won't be returning

Went here with my auntie Anne, who is a regular here & known to the staff.... We were served by Lily who my aunt knows well. We had a quarter Peking duck for starters, shared. Then my aunt had chicken chow mein & I had Singapore chow mein. Both excellant, along with the duck. Always will be my go-to Chinese in Southport.I think Ho Lee Chow is now closed?

Have visited the jasmine tree many times previously but this evening was only ok. The food was nice enough but nothing special but the service was pretty poor. I think we only had 1 smile off anyone. The restaurant was quiet but had 5 waiting staff (1 went home at 9). I've never seen such bored looking employees. The speed of service was fine (except at the end waiting to be served with the bill) but nothing was given with a smile or even a word. Just dumped on the table. I asked for chopsticks and was asked 'really?! Does anyone else want to give them a go?' Erm I'm in a Chinese restaurant yes please. Thought it a little strange that they weren't on the table from the start but understand that many prefer to use knife and fork. In summary, food is a good standard Chinese banquet (we had banquet A) but nothing special but the service is seriously lacking. Shame - really gone off.

Been coming here for years all most 13 years to be honest.. In all that time I can honestly say I have never had a bad meal.. Food is outstanding and the staff are kind and very welcomeing..!!

We have been dining in the Jasmine tree for years. The last three times we've had lovely soups and appetisers but the wait between the appetisers and the main course has been a problem. We sat down at 7 p.m. and the soups and starters were delivered quickly. We didn't get our main course until 8:10. I don't understand why as our very pleasant waitress asked us if we were ready for the main course after clearing away the plates from the appetisers and we said "yes please". I mentioned that we had been waiting a long time for the mains and that we had already drunk our wine and that I thought it would be a nice gesture if a couple of complementary glasses of wine could be provided which they were. The mains arrived quickly but were not good. My wife's Oyster sauce dish was bland and I had beef in black bean sauce which was also bland but the beef has tough. I mentioned the beef to the owner who pointed out that I should have complained before eating all the beef. Problem was that there were only four pieces of beef in the dish and I had eaten them before deciding that they had all been tough! I'm not one for prolonging things so we paid the bill ( 2 soup, 2 starters, 2 mains with one noodles/beansprouts shared between us and a £16 bottle of wine was over £60 ). On thing that was very apparent to us was the number of takeaway orders that were being taken and collected. The manageress was on the phone ( close to our table ) taking orders frequently. When people come to collect the takeaways, they have to come to the back of the restaurant passing all the seated diners. Then stand and wait for their meals. At certain times there were several people waiting for takeaways making the area quite congested. The volume of takeaways may be the reason why we've had to wait so long for our main courses. Jasmine Tree, are you a sit down Chinese restaurant or a takeaway? It's not fair on seated diners paying full wack to have to wait for people getting takeaways.

Ordered take away which caused major confusion when we collected it for unknown reasons. Food I felt was generally poor and whilst portions were certainly not mean I didn't feel quality was there. We have dined in restaurant previously and was unimpressed then but as it was a while back felt it worth a shot for takeaway. The restaurant was quite busy so I hope the diners were happier than we were. Sorry but this is one off my list now.

Our fist visit to the Jasmine Tree was early on a Saturday night. Needed a table for 3, and we'd not booked. It was very busy, but we were speedily sat down. Within a couple of minutes a lady came and apologised profusely and asked would we mind moving, as that particular table had been booked. It was so well done, we didn't mind at all, and actually liked our new table better. Great choice on the menu, very friendly and efficient service, and lovely food. We particularly liked the steak in black pepper sauce. Obviously full of regular visitors - hope we'll become regulars too.

Lovely restaurant, which we return to time and again over the past 20 years. Always rely on excellent food and service. A guaranteed great evening.

food was fairly good but a couple of dishes where not to either mine or my friends liking as tasted totally differant to what we have had anywhere else. portions where good but we where rushed all the time which only ended as we walked out the door. manageress/owner? is a big problem tho, she was constantly shouting at and telling off staff which the whole of my group of 6 felt she was totally out of order in doing so.staff where working quickly and efficiently and couldn't be faulted at all by any of us but she was treating them even worse than a slave would be. have heard such good things about this place over the years but will never be going back again ever just because of her attitude towards staff.

Food is great , drinks very reasonable , staff friendly ..... But , from sitting down the pressure was on to order , must have been asked several times at every stage , ready to order , have you finished , want a desert , they seemed to try too hard , and we did feel rushed , but we worth a visit

My husband and I have been going to this restaurant for many years. The food is good and reasonable and we have always found the staff to be friendly and polite. Hence our surprise to read the reviews about the head lady Lily. We always liked to be served by her, and her sons who also occasionally work there, she is very efficient and likes to make sure that everything runs smoothly. We visited last Saturday for lunch, great meal, friendly chat with Lily and are going again this Thursday. We had not been for a while as a gentleman served us a few times and we found him to be unfriendly bordering on rude, we thought that maybe Lily had left, so were pleasantly surprised when we saw her in there last Saturday. I am posting this review in support of Lily to try and counteract the derogatory remarks that have been posted about her, and to say that this is not the most fancy restaurant we have visited, but the food is certainly better than most of them.

What can I say ... Well we turned up not booked and were greeted nicely and as there were 5 of us and it was a Saturday I thought we wouldn't get a table well we did they made sure we were looked after. Food was spot on hot, cooked well, tasty and well presented. We had a three course each with all the extras extra Sui Mai & extra chips 4 pints beer and 2 bottles cider 2 cokes also coffees which came with cream and sweets. Bill was £86 well worth it. Definately go again X

A nice buzz inside and really good unpretentious food. For me the best Chinese food in Southport, and I've tried a few :).
