The Lemon Plaice in Reading

Chips Tasted like they were boiled curry sauce was congealed like it had been made yesterday or maybe a week earlier warning do not eat from this shop. Definitely isn’t the same as what it used to be.

Fish and chip shop in Tilehurst. Best fish and chips around by a long chalk. Large cod and large chips yes please. Note: the chips portions are ‘big’ - you might only need a medium … but if you are doing it go all in. I keep failing to get here before they close (from the Vic pub opposite). Highly recommend! (It’s my guilty pleasure and why not?). The queues speak for themselves. 😁

Bueno colina abajo no lo explica, hemos estado aquí bastantes veces en el pasado, pero no por un tiempo, tenía bacalao y patatas fritas dos veces, la masa estaba pegajosa en el interior mal cocinado y las patatas fritas eran un do over de la noche anterior, esto solía ser tan bueno, sigue siendo los mismos propietarios, así que se espera el mismo estándar que siempre tuvimos, pero ya no, lo siento, pero nunca más volverá a nuestra antigua tienda.

food was nice but service was awful clearly prioritising telephone orders over people that had bothered to go in person. 4 members of staff clearly working hard but should have at least acknowledged the 5 people waiting in the queue

Always great fish and chips but today had battered sausage and it was lovely. Curry sauce is yummy here

I live close to a chip shop which I feel has gone down hill, so I thought I'd try the Lemon Plaice as it's always had a good reputation. The fish and chips were absolutely delicious, not too greasy, lovely crispy fish, definitely the best I've had in Tilehurst. Chips portion size weren't the biggest, but they were enough. The man and lady were lovely to talk to, which makes a change from many places where the staff don't speak. I'd definitely return.

Called in here on the off chance. We were the only ones there for the duration of ordering to taking out food, which we took down to a riverside bench to eat. The fish (haddock) and the scampi were excellent and a decent portion of scampi. The chips were nice, and the batter was nice and crisp. Friendly and efficient staff. Shame they had no rock left though. Will definitely be back as it's far superior to the chippies closer to home.

Personally I think this is the best fish and chip shop in Tilehurst. Never had a bad meal from here would definitely recommend

In terms of the portion sizes, value for money and quality of cooking this is the best fish and chips you’ll have. Both the fish and chips are perfectly cooked with the batter crispy and light and they aren’t oily and greasy making you feel sick afterwards. The pineapple fritters with sauce are a must have as well.

Don’t order from here. Have just ordered for the first time from here. Sausage looks and tastes like it was reheated two or three times. The chops were only just cooked and tasted rubbery. Only ordered here as the four seasons were closed. Wasted 80% of my money as nearly all of it went in the bin. Will not be using again. They advertise award winning. This was really not award winning.

Unsure if there has been an ownership change, but an older lady (management type) seemed perturbed to be there, with the attitude of a woman whose unhappy with life. I ordered a large portion of chips which came in at £4.20 however what I actually got was less then a small that I’ve purchased before for a young’un.(truly disappointing) The curry sauce came in at £1.80 but I received a small tub that was filled just less than 2/3rds full. I drove all the way from Bracknell to go to this place and have been doing this for years. But after being unwell and my hospital stay, I was looking forward to a perfect supper however sadly this place has changed into being just like all the mediocre places littering the streets of this town. Shame as sad to see this once great fish and chip shop succumb to greed and uncare. Overall 2/10 and will advise as many as I can to stay away from this place. Only because the management at the store didn’t seem to care about the patrons

Medium cod was same size as large cod,very very greasy

Although it was good friday , they still had ONLY usual number of staff , over an hour wait! , No food ready in overhead warmers etc , once you got to front of queue , it was still 20+MINUTE wait, For food, whether you phoned the order or not ! , useless ! , food wasnt up to much either! & too expensive .

Have eaten from here 2 or 3 times and always very good. Went in for 1 "large" portion of chips most recently and was astounded at the miniscule portion size relative to the price...£3.80.

A traditional fish and chip shop with all the classics. My personal favourite spam fritters that you'll always struggle to find. Amazing value for the food you receive and the staff are Britishly polite. My go to for fish and chips....could become yours also.

Every time I visit I always have to wait for long periods of time. Last night there was four members of staff working behind the counter and all four were just focused on the orders that had been telephoned in instead of customers that are queuing. After waiting 25 minutes I was finally served but I will not be using this chippy anymore I will take my custom elsewhere in future

Had superb Fish And Chips from Lemon Plaice this evening. Plenty of other choices on the menu should you not be a fish lover. Think it’s great that they do a Senior Citizen fish and chips.

The Lemon Plaice is a brilliant local chip shop. What makes this place unique is the fact that they can cater for small or large events. We have used them for catering to Brownie and Guide Groups right up to a massive street party. The food is good, always hot and packed really well. When we order for Guides they always pack cutlery, salt, vinegar and a a napkin. I would recommend this place to everyone. Enjoy!

In our opinion they serve the best fish and chips in the area.

I stopped here yesterday and ordered haddock and chips. As I expected, the fish dad to be cooked so it was fresh! When it was ready, it was wrapped and given to me so I left to eat it. It was really lovely! I really enjoyed it. The batter was lovely and crisp and the chips were really lovely too. It was a visit well worth making. Thank you so mush to The Lemon Plaice for such lovely food.

Friendly on the phone when I called to order fish & chips. Batter was crispy, fresh tasting fish, good chips too. Good job. (FYI It's 'take away' only.)

The Lemon Plaice is a traditional fish and chip shop with lots of extras on the menu like chicken and cockles. The fish is very good and the batter is light and golden. The staff are very friendly and helpful and experienced. I would recommend The Lemon Plaice as an excellent local fish and chip shop.

Undercooked batter,slow service,tasteless cod,don't get orders right and miserable staff..just about sums the place up..

Chips could be better and portion size too especially for the price. No vegan options or any allergen advice printed. Needs updating. Staff are always friendly and helpful

Crispy fish, thick, chunky, soft chips, always freshly cooked when we arrive. I'm there weekly now. Never disappoints.

Friendly accommodating staff who didn't mind the questions about food allergies. Chicken nuggets dairy and soya free. Such a relief to find a chippy who was able to do this. Never find chips that are soggy, always just right. Does a good steady trade.

Great chip shop with lovely and friendly staff! Always fresh and hot food, definitely worth a visit and parking close by when using the CoOp carpark.

Been coming here for a few years, usually okay. Fairly pricey for the portion size, fish is usually well cooked but batter can be thick and greasy. Also, when I went there at lunch time the chips seemed like they were yesterday’s chips because they were papery, dry throat scratchers. A shame really, might give them another chance. Will update review if so.

Order and collect system works really well. My first meal from here was divine. This time was good although batter not as crispy. I think it might be to do with the business, might try a quieter time next time around. Chips amazing!

Felt very uncomfortable as I wasn't allowed in the shop due to not having a face mask after I told her I was exempt due to my health conditions I'm very disappointed very discriminating people

My son and I went here to get Fish and Chips Despite being the only customer my 10 yr old son was told to wait outside on his own while I order obviously putting him at risk by a very curt ignorant female. So I have no idea how a single parent of young children would be able to use this place. Not that I would recommend the food either as I thought originally that they were a good place no price increase due to covid19 lockdown. How wrong was I no price increase just significantly smaller portions of poor quality chips. And incredibly slow service too.I would like to say something positive about this establishment but unfortunately I can't. Avoid like a plague.If you expect courtesy,good food fast service and your children safe DON'T GO HERE.I hope they go bust as it will be a bonus

We ordered food for 4 people and it was beautiful and fresh. It was our first time ordering from here, we phoned 3 different chip shops before Lemon Plaice and they were the only ones locally that served Skate! We thoroughly enjoyed it and will definitely be returning customers in the future.

There appears to be a variety of comments. I like my food and regularly get a take away from here. I have always found the Lemon Plaice to be one of the best fish and chip shops in Reading. The staff are quirky, and chatty with a very dry sense of humour.

Ask for xlarge cod nothing else so easy 2 get right, got home opened paper to realise was a small, called up to say wasn't happy to be told I was wrong and that it was a small large which not shore what that means won't go here again and don't recommend

The lemon Plaice delivered fish and chips for 25 of us yesterday at a small social event. The food arrived in individual containers, still at a fine temperature, and each person got kinvescsnd forks, salt and vinegar in individual packs. We were only charged just under a fiver per person, which was great value. No complaints, in fact, everybody enjoyed it. No bones.

Just had lovely fish cakes, battered sausage and lovely chips, and the best curry sauce in town. Service was friendly and efficient food was piping hot despite a bus journey home. The best chippy in the local area. Always tasty and hot. THE BEST CHIPPY IN TOWN BY FAR

Just got home with 2 sausages in batter medium chips and a curry sauce. Not much food but normally still piping hot when i get home. Tonight the chips are cold and curry sauce only luke warm. The sausages were sort of hot but not anywhere near the normal standards. Very disappointed because the staff are lovely. Seems like i have to find a new chippy.

Travelled to Reading from Scotland for family funeral. Tasty Cod & Chips freshly made. As good as anything sold back home.
