We decided to try here for dinner, this place has changed hands a few times and the new owners have made it a very good dining experience, there are a range of gluten free options, the food we had was well cooked and full of flavour. We tried the shepherds pie and beef stroganoff with a side of veg, we also tried the hummus as a starter. Both our meals were cooked well and a nice range of veg for an extra side. The staff were friendly and attentive. We were too full for dessert. It was very busy and we were lucky to get a table as we hadn't booked. We will certainly return to try some other dishes.

This was an excellent pub in Bury St Edmunds until it fell out of favour for a number of years during which there were multiple owners and periods of closure. However it is now back with great food, service, beer and atmosphere. In the summer months there is a huge well maintained garden but, for now, we can all enjoy the spacious comfortable interior

I hate to do this, as the pub is under new ownership and trying to make a go of a location that hasn’t proved that easy in the past, but I have to be honest. It may be that we caught them at the end of a Sunday dinner service, but that shouldn’t really excuse poor food. The fact is that it was not what I’d expect at the prices now being charged. The smoked brisket pepper “popper” starter was fine for taste, but it was very clearly reheated (microwaved?) and was a bit sloppy. But my main issue was with the roast chicken dinner. First of all it was advertised as “chicken and stuffing”, but no stuffing appeared on the plate. There was certainly plenty of food, so I can’t complain about that. If anything, too much. But it all tasted, felt, and looked like it had been reheated too many times. The chicken was tough and the vegetables were soggy, as was the Yorkshire pudding. Further, it was swamped in some unpleasant-tasting dark brown gravy that must have come from a tin or granules. There was certainly nothing that tasted anything like chicken in it. It wasn’t horrible, it just wasn’t very good, and not good enough when you’re spending over £18 for it. The Greene King IPA also had a stale taste to it, which is pretty unforgivable in a Greene King pub in Bury St Edmunds. On the plus side, the service was lovely. The gentleman who served us was attentive, pleasant, and made us feel welcome.

Bad food and young untrained staff. We had Sunday lunch and requested a gluten free (coeliac disease) Sunday lunch and were told the Yorkshire puddings were not gluten free so they would remove it. Upon the food coming out my plate had a Yorkshire pudding on. We asked the waitress if the Yorkshire pudding was gluten free to which she replied it was not. I wasn’t convinced, so I went to ask the man who had taken our order, to which he stated “no I said it wasn’t”. They then took the plate but left my husbands plate meaning his food got cold whilst he waited for my food again. When my plate came back out we were then further disappointed. The food was extremely bland, my husband ordered the chicken and it was literally 2 chicken breasts rather than roast chicken, the gammon was overcooked and unpleasant, the carrots were undercooked and tough to eat. When the young server asked how our food was my husband said that it wasn’t great due to the bad start with the gluten incident, to which the server became defensive stating it was just a mistake and when my husband explained the potential consequences the server stated “well it’s a good job that didn’t happen then isn’t it” which was just overly defensive compared to a simple apology. We will not be coming back, and would not recommend others to bother with the food. The atmosphere generally wasn’t right for us, but that’s possibly just personal preference.

Lovely food and friendly bar staff. We are leaving a negative review though due to the customer service we experienced. We visited tonight as the pub is dog friendly. The ‘pub dog’ was off lead and took a dislike to our dog who was on a lead in the garden. The first time it started barking at our dog, it caused an accident resulting in half my drink spilling all over my lap, this was witnessed by the landlady who didn’t apologise or offer a fresh drink and I was sat in wet jeans for the rest of the evening. The second time it approached our dog, who was clearly intimidated and distressed by its presence, when we asked for it to be taken away or put on a lead, we were told it it was the pub’s dog and their garden. No apology, no acknowledgment that it was being aggressive to our dog. It was eventually picked up by the owner and taken away but by this point we were pretty frustrated. We ate our food and left as quickly as we could. A shame as the garden is nice and the food is decent, but we won’t be going back.

First visit since the refurbishment and it’s been done lovely with a great outside area, we had lunch a Caesar salad which was fab and the rack of ribs which my husband enjoyed but said they weren’t the best he’s ever had. It would be good if there was a sign for people to keep dogs on leads at all times though as there was one that was allowed to wander around, not the dogs fault but the owner’s.

Four of us ate here on Friday night, 7 September. We had a very good experience all round. We were warmly welcomed and directed, sat outside in the spacious and pleasant garden to enjoy a drink while the evening was still sunny. My husband said his ale was very good, there were 3 on offer. We then came indoors to our reserved table for a meal. The menu choices were varied and good, and the waiting staff were attentive and responsive. The food came out after about 15 to 20 minutes, and we were provided with a bottle of tap water on request, with 4 glasses with lemon slices. Our meals were delicious and plentiful. We sat in the conservatory area which leads to the garden, it was sufficiently quiet to be able to chat to each other without straining to hear, despite other parts of the pub being busy. All in all a very pleasant evening, good food, staff, venue and ambiance. We will definitely return in the near future.

1st time back at the Linden Tree for a number of years. I really liked the decor and beer garden. The staff were very warm, friendly and helpful. The starters were excellent and good value. Both our main courses were average though plentiful. The chicken breast was dry and seemed poor quality and the BBQ ribs were not as tasty as l was hoping. There were quite a number of dogs in and running around the restaurant. I love dogs and children but don't want them running around and screaming/barking when come in for a relaxing lunch. Regrettably would not be returning.

Now that The Linden Tree has re-opened we thought we'd give it a look, the pub has been refurbished and looks very nice, there are still a few things to finish, but the atmosphere is very nice and relaxed. The waitress that looked after us was very polite and attentive. Whilst I can't complain about the quality of the food, it was very tasty, for the price the portions are on the small side and a bit disappointing in that respect, see my picture of The Linden burger, £16 for what I got it should have been £12 to £13, it would have been value if there were double the fries, a couple of onion rings and a little garnish or slaw. As for the drinks, they are quite expensive compared to other establishments, £6+ for a pint. I would give my experience based on value for money as a 6.5 out of 10, it would have scored 8.5 but for portion size.

We arrived and were shown to our table and the menu was issued. After about 15mins and still no one attempting to take our order for drinks or food, I had to ask how we place an order. Promptly someone came and took our order. This all took place while their waitress, sat at the bar on her break, eating a burger and chips and playing with her phone. After about 15 mins we were asked, did we want the starters and mains together, which defeats the terms, starters and mains. The starters then arrived about 5 mins later, one prawn cocktail and one chargrilled squid (which had never seen a grill because it was cold). Our main food arrived, two fish and chips and a Thai king prawn green curry. Not only was the curry anaemic in colour but it was Luke warm. I complained and it was duly taken away, 5 mins later my replacement meal arrived. It wasn’t replaced they had just, zapped in the microwave. Do these guys have hygiene certificates, I think not, you don’t reheat shellfish. I sent it back, they did offer a replacement but after their performance I didn’t risk it. I will not be coming back to the linden tree or the bunbury arms (their sister establishment). I can assure you I’ll be spreading the gospel as it tainted my evening.

Remembering this place from when we were young, we decided to book and try it since it had reopened with new owners who had promised to bring it back to former glory - oh dear! What a mistake! The service was terrible. There was only one other group there for most of our time and yet the meals took 50 minutes to get to us. The service was incredibly poor - non attentive staff who had to be called over each time to ask for anything and the woman who we assumed was the landlady was rude and unapproachable who spent most of her evening sitting drinking wine at the bar with her friend. The food was actually ok but not massively warm and sauces were definitely microwaved but didn’t enjoy the food as the service left such a bad taste in the mouth! The desserts were an absolute joke - £7.50!!!! And when they arrived were absolutely tiny - a minuscule sliver of pre packed cheesecake with no cream or ice cream for that price. When questioned and asked to speak to the manager - she didn’t even bother coming over and continued to sit and drink at the bar. When queried on the bill - the server just said ‘that’s what it is - we don’t make the prices, those above us do’. Needless to say we won’t be returning or recommending. Such a shame as this used to be the best family restaurant in Bury and a lovely pub to drink in. It’s become a souless place, no atmosphere, rude staff and overpriced rubbish. Will be closing down again soon no doubt!

Delicious Sunday roast. Tasty tender beef with roasted vegetables and cauliflower cheese, topped with a giant yorkshire! Will definitely visit again.

Attended a party night with work colleagues. My starter of fig & Stilton salad contained 3 halves of fig, so what happened the the 4th half ?. The Stilton was nothing more than crumbs. My main course, fish pie had been nuked in the microwave and was nothing more than lots of mashed potato covering a sloppy cream sauce which the fish had swum through as there was no fish to be found. All in all a very poor experience and with desert £32.50, not even worth half of that. I bought a bottle of wine, asked for Sauvignon blanc and rather than any opinions being offered, New Zealand, chilean etc I was given a bottle £32.00 then found out later there was a cheaper option available so not impressed being charged top price rather than having a choice. Certainly won’t be going back.

Really disappointed as this pub and especially its staff have gone really downhill. The young brunette waitress was lovely but the manageress was rude and dismissive. We queried our bill as we had been given a "cake charge" for bringing our son's birthday cake so did not order puddings. My Mother was given the wrong coffee, which was undrinkable. When querying this charge, we were told it was in case we got food poisoning and to prove that the poisoning would have come from the cake and not their food???? Never heard so much rubbish in my entire life. If there was to be a "cake charge" then people should be made aware of this in advance. Unfortunately, the manageress was not bothered by the fact that we were upset by her attitude and even when we told her we would not be returning for future birthdays (we have always had birthday celebrations there and spent hundreds of pounds each time as there are between ten and fourteen of us) she just shrugged her shoulders. We all left the pub feeling very deflated. The food, on the whole, was nice despite having to wait nearly an hour for our main course.

In such a tricky location you really need to be above average quality, cheap or providing something unique, but The Linden Tree doesn't succeed on any of those measures. In a place like Bury St. Edmunds with so many great restaurants there is just no reason to choose this one. We had a Sunday Lunch which for £16 I really expected to be cooked fresh but it was very clear that everything had been prepared the day before. We were also missing our cauliflower cheese which I had expected to receive a small discount for, but none was offered. Overall, disappointing and sadly unlikely to return.

Unfortunately we can’t recommend this place. Most of us had a roast dinner. Yorkshires we’re cremated, tiny amount of gravy and apple sauce and well over an hour to be served. When it came (roast pork) it was cold. The seafood spaghetti was appalling. Plus...

SHOCKING. DO NOT GO. Overcharged by £40 and when we questioned this, told to leave as the lady with glasses (perhaps owner?) told us she “didn’t need the stress.” We questioned why we had been charged for 6 J2O’s, after only having 2 on our...

The roast dinner is nice. All fresh ingredients. Worth £16. No IPA on tap? Greene King pub? Charged £12 for 2 pints of coke. When questioned, and debated, £3 was reluctantly removed from the bill. I understand they have to make money but extortionate overcharging...

We stopped here for lunch on route to the cost as it was close to A14 and was the best rated pubs in the town. There is no parking at the pub and so we parked in some bays beside the pub that had parking restrictions between 8-10am. The pub is nicely decorated, there is local artists work on the walls, the facilitates are clean and the staff are lovely. The rear garden is large though there is nothing for children, though the pubs welcome children. There is not a kids menu though they are happy to make the main menu meals smaller. Ideal if your kids are picky like mine. The children’s portions are still large and they struggled to finish. A beautiful lasagne and chips cost £10 for the kids. The main meals my wife and I had were lovely too. I very much enjoyed their homemade house beef burger. 4 soft drinks and main meals for 2 adults and 2 children come to £65. I am sure we will stop in here again. Be sure to visit.

First visit here and it won’t be our last, the staff are very welcoming and the menu excellent, we both had the Halloumi starter then I had the chicken sheesh with yogurt and my husband had the chicken sheesh, all of it was freshly cooked and very tasty, the portions are good and we couldn’t eat it all (sadly) I think it’s a tiny bit overpriced though.
