This may be a pretty pub but avoid at all costs!! One staff member behind the bar was the rudest and most unhospitable we have ever experienced in all of the Cotwolds! Agree with all other poorly rated reviews... staggering rudeness! To add insult to injury, when we couldn't wait to escape, we were given an incorrect inflated bill... a mistake apparently! Advise you not to go to this pub at all but if you do, check your bill carefully and be prepared to be insulted!

Always a pleasure to visit the Lion Inn. Took my 90 year old mother for boxing day lunch and although it wasn't a festive menu, the food was brilliant and everyone could have what they wanted including vegan. Service was superb. Friendly, efficient and at could not have been more accommodating from booking and reorganising a later time for us through to the meal. Perfect, thank you to all concerned.

Unfortunately the atmosphere in the restaurant was as dead as a doornail. It was 3 days before Christmas on a Sunday at 6.45pm and we were the only table in there for the last 30 minutes after the one other table left. There wasn't any music or festive cheer at all! The food was OK. The menu a bit sparse and lack of diversity. I had the festive turkey meal with all the trimmings however the turkey was a bit cold. My husband had the vegetarian risotto which he said was nice. We booked this 6 weeks in advance and told the establishment about our son having a sesame allergy however they brought out a sesame bun on this plate. They did, however, make a new burger without the bun but that shouldn't have happened since we gave them prior warning. The staff also weren't trained on the details of the food and felt "they are made with butter and things like that" was an adequate answer to the question "what are these?". The poor staff shouldn't be put in that embarrassing position. So, not a great experience overall. It's a shame as when we popped in earlier in the day to ask if we could change the time of our table, it was busy and welcoming. Obviously we were after thoughts as the last customers of the weekend!

It's a really cute and cosy place for food and a pint. Unfortunately, my steak was cold. However, it was rectified immediately, and the waitress couldn't have been more helpful. I'm sorry I didn't catch her name. The second steak was cooked to perfection. We expected a discount from the bill, however, it was completely taken off to our suprise. I'd recommend the service and the food at this cosy little pub! We would definitely return when we plan our next trip to the Cotswolds.

We booked to have our staff Christmas lunch here, although didn't choose the Festive menu as we preferred the look of the regular one. We booked through the website for a table for 6 between 2pm and 4pm. We arrived shortly after 2pm to be told the kitchen shut at 2pm but if we were quick we could place an order. We did this even though 2 of our party had not arrived. We ordered mains which arrived 5 minutes before our other 2 guests. The food, I have to say was absolutely delicious, we couldn't fault it, except maybe a little cool for 2 of us! After our plates were cleared no one else came to our table. I understand that if the kitchen was closed we would not be offered dessert, but I feel we should still have been offered some coffee or more drinks. The gentleman who welcomed us said we shouldn't have been able to book a table for that time, but, as I booked it through their website, I feel that is more their fault than ours! It was a real shame because it is a lovley place with well cooked food and we were looking forward to our celebratory lunch. Perhaps around the festive period they should consider being a little more flexible with the kitchen opening times!

Friends stayed on the Friday night and we joined them for breakfast. The pub looked clean and was nicely decorated and furnished. Service was pleasant but not very professional. Coffee was ordered for 5 of us which came several minutes after ordering. Unfortunately, 5 mins after that, we had to ask the waiter if we could have cups and saucers. I ordered the ‘normal’ breakfast, I think it was called ‘The Butcombe’, Sausage, bacon, mushroom, free range egg, tomato and toast. I told the waiter that I have a gluten intolerance so could I have gluten free bread. They don’t do gluten free bread so he offered to replace toast with a hash brown. So, 20 mins later I received my plate of food. One cheap quality sausage, two minuscule rashers of streaky bacon, half a tomato,a medium size portobello mushroom, a fried egg and a hash brown. It was all nicely cooked and hot. If this had been under a tenner, I’d have blamed myself for not ordering the bigger breakfast but it was £14. I’m sorry but it was terrible value for money. Just adding another sausage and decent sized rashers would have just about stopped me from writing this review. I know the margins in the catering industry are tight but people still like value for money.

Booked a table for 8 well in advance. Were asked to pre-order because of the table size. Arrived on Friday night in plenty of time for the booking and were rushed to the table with the manager asking if she could start serving starters. We asked if we could order drinks first because we were not in a rush having all travelled 100+ miles and had arrived before the booked time. The manager said that they had another large table booked (clearly taking priority) and encouraged us to start eating!! Starters arrived which were good. Then mains arrived very quickly afterwards, including two plain cod dishes which had not been ordered and weren’t on the menu. The manager returned to the kitchen to be told by the chefs that they were a replacement for fish stew which had not been delivered by the suppliers (so not made on premises). She admitted that she did not know fish stew was unavailable, bizarre given she is the manager and what she said later!! Neither of the two people who had ordered the now unavailable fish stew wanted a piece of cod and had to re-order whilst the remaining six started eating the main courses. Surely, we should have been told when we all sat down that two choices were unavailable and given the opportunity to order another main course at the start of the meal so that all mains arrived together?? We assumed (foolishly) that the two replacement main courses (steak and risotto) would be given priority because the other six main courses had been served. Twenty-five minutes later nothing had arrived and the manager had avoided any form of contact and issued no apology, in fact was chatting happily in the kitchen. One of our party entered the kitchen to cancel the order because the rest of the table had now finished. The manager told him to be patient because it takes at least 25 minutes to cook a steak, which was definitely disputed - more like 4 minutes! Risotto takes several hours to prepare so was presumably ready and bubbling away in a pan!!!! We asked the manager why we had not been contacted about supply problems prior to our arrival or at least asked to re-select when we first arrived, she then said that she had tried to contact us which was a major contradiction (in view of her previous comments) and definitely not the case. Given the nods of support from other diners this was pointed out to her by one of our party who was then asked to leave. The rest of us followed suit although agreed to pay for drinks, not the food (which was indifferent at best). The restaurant lost several hundred pounds because of this incident which could have been avoided with a more proactive management stance. On a more positive note, we all went to No5 restaurant on the Saturday night had a wonderful time and enjoyed some exquisite food. Top Tip spend your money at No 5 a couple of doors down North Street.

A disappointment! Even when taking into account the age of the building. Our room was extremely shabby,it had a badly stained carpet, paint off the walls and the door. Braiding was hanging off the chair. Door to bathroom did not shut properly. We had a painted up draw to one of the bedside cabinets, torn and dirty paper lining the wardrobe shelves and the bedside cabinets. These are not as a result of an old building! However, the bed was very comfortable as were the pillows and the bed linen was of an excellent quality, similarly the bathroom towels. Shower very good, although as no window or extractor fan in bathroom, the door from the bathroom had to be kept opened otherwise everything remained damp. Housekeeping of the room poor. Additionally, no coffee making machine, had to ask on second morning for one to be left so we could use the 'proper'and only type of coffee on the beverage tray.No note on arrival to say milk had to be obtained at the bar. A dead plant adorned the room. Breakfast though was excellent and service pleasant. We expected more given the cost of the stay, and wouldn't return.

There is a lady there who is Caucasian, middle aged, she has red hair…. She refused to serve my friend who is of Zimbabwean descent. She stated the kitchen wasn’t running for lunch… 15/20mins later a white couple arrived and she directed them to be seated and said very loudly “At least if you try and run away, I can catch you” it turns out the kitchen was running and she selected to just deny my friend access to having lunch. I do feel this was racially motivated and I am extremely extremely disappointed that such a nice establishment would hire such people to attend to their guests. I hope this is investigated and dealt with accordingly.

We have just had a 2 night break at this wonderful pub taking advantage of their winter offer. It was cold and wet weather outside but inside all was warm and cosy. We enjoyed friendly service, lovely food and a great atmosphere. Particular mention goes to one staff member Marie who went out of her way to ensure that our time at the lion was memorable for all the right reasons.

Unwelcoming staff. Lady with red hair very huffy. Felt she was doing us a favour for actually bothering to serve us. Will find another place next time.

We were in the pretty town of Winchcombe visiting friends at Sudley Castle . We decided to venture into the town to find several eateries they looked nice but just didn’t have that wow factor. After 10 minutes of walking around Winchcombe we came across The Lion inn , we looked in the window to see a lovely restaurant and a log fire burning. Well that made the decision for us after entering we thought 💭 christ we haven’t booked a table ! There is four of us. But we didn’t have to worry as when we walked towards the bar area we were greeted by a member of staff , very polite and a big smile . We asked if we could have a table we said with heads slightly lowered, we haven’t booked sorry 😔 in return we were told no problem and were showed to a table . The service through out was good , the food was lovely and the atmosphere was good . We had the same member of staff throughout our service. . I politely asked for her name her name was Marie or Maria . So a big thank you for looking after us all . It’s a 10 from the 4 of us Marie or Maria . I understand this review maybe long winded my apologies but if your in Winchcombe pop in the Lion see for yourself

From the moment we arrived the energy was lacking from the staff, who appeared to favour tables of "regulars" over new dinners. The food itself was ok but nothing worth writing home about. What was most disappointing was when we finally did secure a table - having attempted on three separate occasion due to other peoples recommendations we received a below average level of service. Hence we feel it was not value for money when we have since eaten elsewhere locally for less money and received ten times the service and quality of food. I would be hard pushed to recommend the Lion Inn to someone and we will not be returning any time soon.

I am shocked to read such good reviews after visiting this pub twice now in a short space of time I have found the serving staff to be exceptionally rude and the food very average. I have had to send back food on both visits and sadly being new to the area will avoid this pub like the plague going forward.

We stayed at this Premier Inn three times over this year for my husband to attend the hospital next door. Twice the appointment was cancelled and as we would lose our money if we cancelled the hotel we visited the city. We had our meals at the restaurant and each time we had exemplary service from Bethany, Jack and on the last occasion Louise. they were very welcoming and we couldn't fault the meals at all. They worked so hard to ensure that our evenings were comfortable and enjoyable.

The male chef serving the carvery was most unhelpful and unfriendly. The Yorkshire puddings were flat and clearly covered in oil. There were only a few in the bottom of the bowl so I asked for some fresh ones and he told me they were the freshest. He made no attempt to help I used napkins to mop up the grease in it
