The Masham Public House in Stockton-on-Tees

Always had a high regard for Fish & Chips at the Masham ,over the years , until today. Poorly cooked batter on the fish and chips were like eating cardboard. Brought this to the attention of the waitress and her reply was the potatoes were out of season. That did not wash with me.

This restaurant had gone downhill since my last visit. We visited as a party of five. Service was slow. We all had chicken Parmesan’s . The chicken breasts were reformed, on close inspection you could see they were formed of multiple layers. The breadcrumbs slid off like a skin. The chips served here used to be double fried proper home type. Now just basic skin on. Menu very expensive for what’s on offer too. I can no longer recommend here

Visited here a few times now and Sunday lunch has always been spot on, I always have the lamb and the portion size is always very generous! The only thing that's missing is a good cauliflower cheese!! The staff are always friendly and attentive and the atmosphere is nice and cozy :)

Lovely friendly place use to be a regular on a Sunday for lunch but I can’t tolerate a bone in a chicken breast on my dinner absolutely puts me off, after endlessly asking for the bone to be taken out and it still arrives with it in I’ve had to find a new haunt for Sunday Lunch I’m sorry.

Not been here in a long long time but went for a late lunch and the food, service and atmosphere was perfect. Very clean, great staff, everyone smiling.

Great menu, excellent food and drink, brilliant staff, and a great atmosphere. The fact it was so busy on the two week-day evenings we visited is testament to its reputation. We couldn’t have been better looked after and enjoyed our meals immensely, sat in the sunny beer garden. I can’t recommend The Masham highly enough. I just wish we lived in Hartburn!

Portions are huge but food is average at best and overpriced . The roast beef baguette…..beef was so dry that even with the gravy it was inedible. Quorn “parmesan” sooo disappointing … just breaded quorn fillets with sone melted cheese on top .lovely staff and surroundings but food is not worth what they charge unfortunately

Second time visiting here. Thought I would give the chicken parmo another try after it had been about a year since the first time I had one. I wish I never… one of the worst parmos I’ve ever had, the breadcrumbs were soggy, the cheese was sparse and the flavour of the béchamel sauce seemed as though it was made with water rather than milk as it had next to no taste. While eating it, it seemed to deconstruct as all the breadcrumbs slid off the chicken! Haven’t tried anything else on the menu so I can’t comment on other items however I will never order a parmo from here in the future, they need alot of improvements!

Family Sunday lunch tasty well presented and plenty to eat some chose off the regular menu and that was also good. On the expensive side but overall pretty good.

The food and service in the masham is gorgeous but the Bombay pie was disappointing, it’s too much of the same flavour and very heavy.. plain potatoes and something to sharp to cut through the richness would have been better.

Wow only popped for 1 drink. Haven't been for a while but this place has gone down hill so much. Used to have a nice village type feel to it. I wouldn't bother getting dressed up for the place either. Very loud drunk people in tracksuits. Such a shame. Can't see it lasting if the reviews are as bad lately unfortunately.

Just returned home from having Sunday lunch it was poor at best I had the beef that was very stringy and the vegetables come all in one bowl so if you only want peas you have to fish through the turnip carrots and broccoli to get at them so that's me lot been here 3 times in the last 6 months but that's me done now

Sunday lunch always good but during the week the food is average and price high. We had a run in with a male waiter dark hair tattooed he was quite rude and arrogant. The girls are very polite and friendly.

Been many a time and had great food. Unfortunately tonight felt let down by the quality. Thought seeing its now December I’ll have the Turkey dinner. At £18.95 thought it would be worth gobbling it up . Well to say I was disappointed is an understatement. Plenty of turkey . Let down with the veg. The sprouts were so so hard in struggled to cut them with my knife.so hard that I didn’t dare bite down on them for fear of losing a filling . I mentioned it to the waitress who took away my bowl of mixed veg and brought back when I was halfway through my meal . Sorry but sprouts were still too hard . Where was the potato .?? . I was given two medium sized roast potatoes, no mashed potatoes.. come on … all in all the meal was not worth what I paid for . Would I have it again… no I wouldn’t . The veg I’m afraid were tasteless and seemed very much like frozen veg

I went with my family for my granddaughters 21st birthday there was 18 of us we all said same thing the chips were very scrappy and thin my daughter ordered sirloin steak which was very fatty my son asked for garlic sauce for his parmo and young girl just threw across the table I did not see this as I would have spoke to management about it definitely not going back

Went here for a meal and was very disappointed in both the food and service. Firstly the place was freezing as had the air con on and 3 tables mentioned it to the waitress who finally turned it off and said it will soon warm up. It had a lovely fire but wasn’t on. We ordered a burger and scampi. The meal arrived the scampi was ok but the burger was raw in the middle, it was visibly pink and just tasted of pepper, too overpowering even if it was fully cooked. We told the guy who took the plate and never offered an alternative meal. We would have normally ordered desserts and coffee but the attitude of the server was poor so we just asked for the bill and decided to go. He just brought it over with no apology and we were charged full price for the meal which unedable. This place used to be nice for food but its gone down hill. it’s average at best and to hit and miss if you’re going to have a good meal or not and for the price they charge it’s not worth going if your going to get unedable food and leave hungry. Won’t be returning after this poor experience.

Chips were terrible. Lasagne looked as though it was made with leftover bits of another lasagne. Staff not bothered and no recompense offered following our complaint. Avoid!

Have always thought the masham was consistent and good, we arrived for a late lunch on saturday, it was one of the worst meals we have had. Cajun chicken was dry and the chips were green and not cooked. Disappointing we did point this out at the time and they charged kids meal for the cajun chicen. Will give it a while before we return

Those in our party who had the parmo said it was fab. Unfortunately the rest of the meals weren't so good. Beef baguettes that were very dry, even with lots of gravy. And Sunday lunches with some odd flavours (not sure if it was the stuffing). Service was excellent, there seemed to be a lot of staff on duty. Acoustics could do with some work; it was very noisy.

We had a booking for 14 on Tuesday and from start to finish everything was spot on 👍 The lady that served us was absolutely lovely and was very understanding of my dad who has dementia. The food and drink was very nice and the prices where reasonable. Every member of staff that we came in contact with was very helpful and professional. Thank you for a great night

What a superb Sunday lunch. The Masham consistently provides great quality food. Try the smaller plate if you don't think you can manage a normal size plate. It's perfect for those who have a smaller appetite.

Getting together with friends for dinner is always an enjoyable event, however, at the end of the night we were all in agreement that we would not be returning to this venue. The room we were in was very noisy with small children at 9 pm and dogs. The service was very slow for both food and drinks - we gave up on ordering desserts as staff disappeared and did not come back to take our order and by the time they did we asked for the bill. The food was not of any great quality sadly and most of us were disappointed.

I went here with a friend for lunch and was not disappointed. I booked online and it was dealt with professionally. The staff were amazing, very attentive and our order was faultless. The food was great and worth every penny. I would just like to thank the ladies who work there, thanks again for a wonderful lunch.

Disappointed. The food was very nice as usual. But we were a party of 18 celebrating a baby shower. We had a little boy just over a year old. We got charged £7.50 for a small bowl of mash with a spoonful of gravy on it .

First visit to this restaurant and first impressions were very good. Unfortunately our table was in the conservatory area and it was very noisy. My starter was excellent as were the others on my table. Mains were disappointing. My sea bass came on a bed of something I couldn't describe. A mish mash of beans carrots in a yellowy sauce. Yes it looked very unappetising. Also a gravy boat with very rich brown sauce. Very peculiar! The fish was good though. Service was slow but it was a busy night.

Excellent service and fantastic meal. Only gripe is the price of alcohol. We old definitely visit again.

Called in on the off chance for lunch. Staff were very busy, didn't leave us in doubt place was popular. Lovely "greeter" had us seated within minutes. Menus and drinks arrived quickly. Ordered Beef Baguette. Wow!!!! Absolutely awesome. Hot plates, fresh bread and the most delicious melt in the mouth beef. Even had your own little jug of gravy. Would recommend without reservation. 5* Service, Atmosphere and Food.

The food was very good ( pork belly starter excellent) and I’d go four stars. But the extra star is for the staff. Absolutely brilliant. Attentive but not intrusive, helpful and polite. A credit to themselves and the Masham. Thank you for a really enjoyable evening.

Lovely food reasonably priced friendly staff. But fell way short on wheelchair friendly access, wow!! First of all there is no incline slope at the front door,just steps,thought that was illegal these days and not inline with modern regulations. Second there was not any safety rails to hold onto either at the entrance What a struggle we had. God knows what the toilets and rear entrance are like.

We were in the area and popped in here at The Masham for a late lunch. My wife opted for a roast beef baguette, which she loved. She shared some with me and it was really nice! I chose a parmo, a decision I did not regret! It was so good.This is a lovely cosy restaurant with plenty of character. The friendly and efficient staff were great too. We would definitely return!

Booked a table for 3 for a Thursday evening. It was lucky we did as it was almost full! We all agreed the food was excellent. Beef baguette, vegetarian parmo and Moo and blue cheese pie. We dine out regularly but this has to be the best we've been to in Stockton by far. There was a half hour wait at the table for the food but then it seemed all freshly cooked. We will definitely return. The beef was such good quality we will soon try the Sunday lunch. Highly recommend this place!

Food never disappoints. Great menu and specials board always offers plenty of variety. Only downfall I think is the introduction of table service. Perhaps would benefit from some staff training!

Visited with family for lunch. Lots of choice on the menu and a good selection of specials on the blackboard.Between us we had Parmo, Scampi, Curried steak (4.5 hours baked - delicious!) Sausage and mash & Pork fillets. All were very good, piping hot and served with a smile. The draught Bass was a delight!

This is usually our go to place when we are craving a good parmo locally or just some good hearty food. I often bring clients here at lunch too for this same reason however Sunday Evening was a huge disappointment. Being told they stop serving at 7 we arrive at 6:25 for our table booked for 6:30 and had been put in the front room rather than the restaurant area. This could be where it started to go wrong as we felt totally forgotten about and had to wait for a table to be cleaned when there were a lot of staff milling around. We took our seats and our menus and waited around 15 minutes to have our order taken, conscious we were going for the whole 3 courses and chef was due to close the kitchen in 15 minutes this was a little concerning. Having nothing on the menu for someone who wanted good english (not asian influenced starters and who doesn't eat seafood) I gave up on the starter and watched my pattern order his arancini with parmesan and rocket salad. He ordered beef as he was eyeing the red cabbage the table next to us received and I thought as I had been clean eating all week I deserved a treat and caved on the parmo I love so much. The arancini arrives and the salad is a side salad with dressing with no parmesan to be seen. We admitted it was late and they must have run out. The beef arrives and no red cabbage, a little disappointing but at least there was cauliflower cheese etc. I have been avoiding carbs for a few weeks and caved at the mash on his plate and tried a fork full, it was cold. Not being one to complain he ate it. My parmo was the biggest disappointment and quite honestly not Masham standard. It was so soggy the bottom of my parmo was still in the kitchen, it was overcooked and tough. what's worse is it was cold. I would have complained had anyone come back to check on us. My partner not being one to complain just paid the bill and we left. I feel the need to state that usually this is a lovely place to go (hence the 4 stars) but because I have been bitten I will be twice shy and most likely find somewhere else (especially on a sunday evening!) I would recommend the Masham at lunch or midweek evening but Sunday evenings not so much. 

Visited recently for a birthday and much of the group were deep into ‘Veganuary’. The menu surprisingly offered a decent amount of vegetarian food including vegetarian chips (not based in beef). The vegetarian Parmo is a must for those non-meat eaters!

My friend and I called in here again on Friday evening. Absolutely superb yet again. We both had the Rib Eye Steak which was cooked to perfection. Would prefer not to sit in the back room again as no soundproofing so was very noisy with kiddies and their electronic devices and general chatter. Much prefer the front of the pub for comfort. Also, excellent staff who are always neat, today and polite. Definitely suggest booking on a Friday,Saturday or Sunday.

Visited last Friday with the girls from work for our Christmas tea..it was my first visit and I have to say that the food is amazing. I had the Parmo and chips it was delicious, never tasted a Parmo as good as this, the chips were to die for. For dessert I opted for the Masham Mess...it was huge and delicious too..I can honestly say it may of been my first visit to the Masham but it most definitely won't be my last!

Loved the parmo, Dan was a great server and nothing was too much to ask! Will definitely be returning ☺️

Lovely Sunday lunchOne traditional, two vegetarian, one fussy eater The vegetables, Yorkshire puddings were wonderful. The meat eater loved the chicken, we loved the quorn fillets, the fussy eater loved the chips and garlic bread pizza.The staff were pleasant if a little stretched, the food was just lovelyOh and leave space for desert, they were gorgeous too!

This pub has a policy to allow well behaved dogs but it would seem they also cater for badly behaved ones too.My friend and I asked to move tables because of the over raucous dog that kept jumping up at our table and was jumping at people who were passing.It then proceeded to bark and and bark and consistently throughout our meal. Other diners were also commenting on the constant barking whilst we were all trying to enjoy our meal and yet not one member of staff including the manager said nothing to the dogs owner.I have spoken to the manager and his attitude was blaise. He didnt give a toss. My friend and I didnt stay for dessert because of the constant noise of the dog.We wont be returning

We have recently moved to hartburn village and there is two pub restaurants to choose from. We were under the impression that the masham was slightly higher and than the other pub. So we chose the masham for two recent special occasions.The first was and evening meal for my birthday. My husband had the grilled salmon and I had the Mediterranean chicken burger. Big portions, cosy table and good wine. We had a lovely evening. The only minor issue was that the Mediterranean burger could have had more olives, feta and sundries tomatoes in it as you couldn't really taste them. After a good experience we decided to return for our son's 3rd birthday during the day. The pub wasn't very busy so we were sat straight down. The first small problem was they didn't provide children's drinks. So we got him cordial which came in a tall glass and was very strong I had to ask for water to dialute.We ordered our food at 12:40. My son opted for the childrens meal burger. My husband asked politely if they did a lunchtime adults burger. The waitress replied with an abrupt No. Quite rude! My husband then decided on the Cajun flatbread and I had the roasted vegetable and goats cheese wrap. The food eventually turned up at 1:15. 35 minutes in a quiet restaurant is a long time to wait with a small child. However we thought well at least it's cooked fresh. The children's meal arrived and it was a big burger bun, small burger pattie and chips. No sauce or salad in burger and no peas or beans or veg as you would expect from a children's meal. Especially one that costs £7.25 just for that meal!My wrap was a tortilla wrap filled with big chunks of not roasted peppers and courgette and a tomato sauce with melted goats cheese through like a pasta sauce. I expected a sweet delicious mix of roasted veg and slices of salty goats cheese. My just turned 3 year old son who is a fantastic eater and will eat amost anything said his burger was hard and refused to eat it. We both tasted it and it was awful inedible. When the waitress eventually cleared our plates we told her that the burger was very chewy. The chef told her that the burger wasn't chewy and it's because its 100% beef. I make home made burgers with 100% steak mince and the consistency is completely different. I told this to the waitress who said they were bought in burgers. After a discussion the children's meal was taken off our bill rightly so as he hadn't eaten it. I felt like an apology and a refund would have been the appropriate way to deal with a complaint. This would have perhaps made us return. To argue and insult customers is terrible customer service. We will not return.

Friends birthday celebration was spoilt by the table next to us that had 4 adults together with an approx 12mth old child and a 2/3 yr old who was celebrating a birthday . Both children either screamed or cried together or seperately for 3 hrs . It totally spoilt our night . The pub was full or we would have asked to move our party of 6 adults . Finally for coffee we managed to find a place away so we could eventually talk together . We mentioned it to a member of staff who said the policy of the pub was to ensure children were out by 9 . What parent(s) would take such young children to a pub as a birthday celebration ? . They were there prior to our arrival at 6.30 and departed at 9 and were obviously tired from the start . Whilst the food was as usual good 4 out of the 6 of our party won't return . It is a pity the management don't have a ruling on age for appropriate time i.e. No under 5 s after 6 and remainder of children To be gone by 9 . Easy to say it should be up to the parents but these adults couldn't give a toss .

We have used the restaurants on many occassions and rated it as 4-5 star but our last two visits have been at best - average. In fact the duck wellington was possibly the worst meal we have had in a restaurant. This after it took 45 mins to be asked what we would like.

Visited with family for a celebration, the place was packed out, the food was gorgeous and quick considering the level of customers. Food was gorgeous and the staff were attentive and friendly, highly recommend

Every time we go to the Masham we are never disappointed. Food always delicious and hot. If there was one thing about this times visit I would of liked salad with the Cajun chicken flatbread. I understand this isn’t included on a lunchtime only on an evening. But other than that, highly recommended.

Been here a few times but this is my 2nd review of the Sunday lunch. The meat falls apart, lovely mash, roasties and large yorkie. My previous review criticised the choice of ‘seasonal veg’ but I find the choice of veg unusual it was perfectly pleasant - spiced red cabbage, slices of turnip and cauliflower (no greens) however it’s a personal choice and this was lovely. I thoroughly enjoyed my Sunday lunch, far exceeded my expectation - but so it should at £14 per head. Gravy lovely too !!

Booked here for Sunday lunch whilst visiting relatives and it certainly did not disappoint, the beef was easily the best I have ever had and my brother had the same who also agreed, another of us had the lamb who also said it was fantastic, the ladies had chicken which also did not disappoint. Beautiful large Yorkshire puddings so light as a good selection of fresh vegetables.Even though I was full from the great main course seeing someone on another table getting the cheesecake it was a must have,and it certainly was worth ordering, dessert heaven.

We went for a meal on a Saturday evening. The portions were very large - the fried fish was about a foot long and we also had the chicken Parmo - all perfectly good. Puddings were also tasty and big - very good value for money! They had 3 real ales on and they sell erdingher wheat beer non alcohol which is a great option If you’re driving. There were people there of all ages, no kids running around and people just there for a drink as well as food - a nice pub

Some beers and a meal with coleagues, had a really good evening! Great place good ales and fantastic food, recommended!!!

Booked for a double birthday celebration and was very disappointed

Came for lunch, as a recommendation. It was delicious. I had the beef baguette & chips, my hubby had cajun chicken flatbread. We halved each. Both delicious & chips just right. The gravy was in a jug on the side, which I like, as Dnt like the bread soggy. The staff were lovely too. We will be back.

I used to be a regular visitor to this pub and the food was good, however recently been very disappointed. The portion size has reduced and the recent lunch was expensive. I had a baked potato with chicken and bacon. There was too much mayonaise and the side salad very small.

As the title states this was my first visit to The Masham and i'm undecided about this place, here's why:

I have visited twice here now and both times I have had great service, a friendly welcome and good food. The fare is varied and cooked well and is a reasonable midrange price. I had the duo of Pork this last visit in January and it was delicious. A good portion and well cooked. My only critisium is that the parking arrangements are limited so you need to go on foot or prepare to park a small distance away and walk. This pub is very popular so go prepared.

Visited today as a group of 7 adults & children.

This has been a local to us for over 20yrs but we have barely ventured in as it always seemed so busy.

I visited the Masham for my evening meal twice as the first time was so nice. The staff were lovely, helpful and very friendly especially Alice. I am keeping away from spuds and pasta etc and the staff went out of their way to help me with this.

Visit here often with family. The food is great and arrives nice and promptly. The pub itself has a good atmosphere and is very cosy, its an older building so can feel a bit small when its busy but there is plenty of room if you're sitting down to eat. We were out shopping and decided to get some lunch, we had been told about the Masham and as we were close we decided to give it a go.

Had a fabulous Sunday lunch. The food was cooked from scratch and really tasty. The staff we attentive and helpful and look forward to returning very soon. Well done

The Masham has always been a favourite, but lately, attention to customers on arrival and having booked a table is lacklustre and each time its as if they have no record of the booking and not expecting us. Pushing through a crowded entrance and accessing bar/restaurant with my older mother always difficult. Food "ok" but increasingly seems 'bought in' and processed. I ordered the slow cooked shoulder of lamb as a Sunday roast - it came swamped in dark gravy and the lamb consisted of thin circular roundels - nothing like a home cooked shoulder or roast at all. With the gravy it quickly broke down into a sort of sludge. Coupled with folk being allowed in the restaurant area with consistently barking dogs was not the experience I needed. Doubt will be eating there again. As I say nice place but food standards and reception of diners had dropped considerably.

Amazing food I had the Cajun chicken flatbread with salad and chips. Fresh and delicious. Reasonabley prices and I will go again. Highly recommended!

Overpriced beer, snobbish atmosphere. won't be returning. plenty of nicer, cheaper pubs in the area!

Went to the masham with friends for lunch and it was dreadfully!! The chicken parmesan tasted as if it had been heated up from the night before and the chips had just been warmed up ! Really poor, we won't be returning !!!

Food here is always very good. Had a Sunday Roast today which was lovely, and even impressed my Step Mum who usually prefers home cooked Roast dinners, she like me thought it was one of the best she has ever had! They also do an amazing cheese souffle.

We hadn't been here for a while but visited in July 18 with our pooch and sat outside in the lovely garden area. As always, very friendly and the service time wasn't too bad on this day, sometimes you can have a bit of of wait at busy times.

My family and I visited the Masham this week and I was disappointed. The food was ok, I had the seafood Paella, which was dry (rice) but what was worse was the toilets and the service. Service was slow, we had to wait a while for desert menus and the bill. The toilets obviously hadn't been checked in a while as their was toilet roll on the floor of two of the toilets and the back of the cubical door was not clean.

Visited with family and food was decent but what a money making experience it was. A nice pub but I can't believe people will pay these prices for standard pub food.

We always love going to the Masham, good service, food and the prices aren't too bad either. Best parmos in Teesside. worth a try
