Having fantastic reviews in The Basingstoke Gazette as ‘The Mutton one of the best pubs for a roast in England’, our group of 5 friends booked for Sunday lunch. We all ordered the Sunday roast which was either beef, lamb or vegetarian. Other items were available on the menu but traditionally on Sundays a roast always ‘fits the bill’. I would however have liked the option of chicken as not everyone likes to eat red meat or a non-meat alternative. Cooking three meats is no greater a task than cooking two by professional chefs surely? Our plates were delivered in due course, but I was disappointed as the Yorkshire pudding was somewhat overcooked for my liking and not crisp, also I would have liked another slice of meat for the price. A bowl of steaming vegetables (red cabbage, carrots and green cabbage) looked fresh and inviting. Followed by a bowl of roast potatoes and two small jugs of gravy. We asked for plenty of horseradish sauce for the table but had to request again as the first was only enough for one person. The roast was alright but nothing outstanding or special and we had to ask for another bowl of green cabbage as there was simply not enough for the table of our size. We received another standard bowl of red cabbage, carrots and green cabbage, so subsequently only the green cabbage was consumed. I did note a table of two received the same quantity of potatoes and vegetables as we did for a table for 5 but we were charged extra for vegetables we didn’t request. I was not responsible for sorting the bill and didn’t know until afterwards. Another jug or larger jugs of gravy to accommodate the number of guests should also have been taken into consideration as again not enough for the size of our table. One size does not fit all in this case. A few in our party including myself said the potatoes were bland, not seasoned correctly and were not homemade but tasted as from a frozen catering bag for convenience’s sake. A couple of desserts were ordered which were nice. The bill was expensive for the quality and quantity including the drinks. Table water was requested and then we had to ask for ice and only a small cup size portion was provided. The pub itself was very cosy, a bit too warm in my opinion and heaving full of customers which was just a little tight for comfort and felt squeezed with bottoms on seats! The power of publicity is what made us venture to The Mutton anyway and no doubt other guests too. Outside the weather was wild, but on arrival there was no disabled parking spaces, so we had to walk through the car park covered in wet leaves which is hazardous and simply dangerous to everyone let alone physically disabled customers. Understandably, cleaning up constantly falling leaves is a huge task itself, but the health and safety of customers should be paramount and is the full responsibility of the venue. Allotted disabled bays are simply a ‘paint job’ and expected so spending x, y & z on internal renovations should not distract from external facilities to be considered also. Would I/we visit again? No plans to in the future but not saying never. We dine out a lot and have had better quality and quantity of Sunday lunches in various public houses in the close vicinity of which are far better value. Good luck nevertheless to The Mutton and thank you to the lovely hosting and waiting staff who were all fantastic.

Visited early on a weekday so no trouble getting a meal without booking. The a la cate looked interesting but the fixed price menu was good value, £24 for two courses or £27 for three. We had cottage pie and plaice, simple enough but really well done. Starters, cauliflower gnocchi.. berry and yoghurt fool for pudding, delicious and stylishly presented. Staff charming. Pity they changed the name from the 'Shoulder of Mutton' but that's the only criticism I can think of. Lots of parking, snug fire on a cold night, enough of a bar area so it doesn't just feel like a restaurant (we ate in the bar).

From the welcome when we arrived, to the moment we left, we were treated like special guests. And the food was just as special. I had pigeon to start, served with celeriac, beetroot and crispy cavalo nero. For my main I had venison with butternut squash, a bolognaise croquet and cavolo nero. My wife had sourdough crumpet to start and sirloin steak as her main. To end our delightful dinners, we shared some fabulous honey madeleines with a butterscotch sauce. The Mutton is such a find. We'll be back for more.

We had a delightful dinner here to celebrate a special birthday & a wedding anniversary. The meal was delicious. I had pigeon breast to start with & venison as a main. Both were very tasty & delicious. It’s really nice to have a slightly varied menu from the usual choices. The waiting staff are always pleasant & tonight was no exception. I would thoroughly recommend - a trifle pricey but delicious!

Absolutely stunning food! We were 7 and everything that everyone ordered was a hit! And all really unusual and imaginative twists on dishes that you would consider to be classics. You definitely won’t be eating anything that you’ll think you could have knocked up at home. A bit more money than you might expect to pay for a meal in a pub but, honestly, worth every penny. Stonkingly good!

Haven’t been here for years. The first table we were shown to, back right, was jammed against walls on two sides and not pleasant. Fortunately, a/the table beside window freed up and we were moved. Service good though, despite being pre-warned the group included a GF person, we had to ask for that menu. The food was excellent and nicely presented. Attentive service. The menu prices are , in my view, on the topsy side, and then the service charge gets lumped on, so bill is quite steep. That said, given the quality of the food , we will return.

Called on the afternoon of my wedding anniversary to see if they had a table (had already booked somewhere in Farnham but as it was such good weather we preferred a garden and The Mutton came to mind). As it was a lovely day, I asked for a table on the terrace under the wisteria to enjoy the view over fields. We arrived and were shown to the best table for the view (all other tables were busy so I guessed they’d saved it for us). The view really is lovely at sunset with the birds flying over and shepherds huts in the distance. Service was great throughout - attentive, not fussy, maybe a tad slow, but we were so enjoying the surroundings that it didn’t figure. Our drinks order was delayed (issue with the printer at the bar) and one drink didn’t come at all, but to be honest we were having such a nice time that we didn’t notice, and when we did, they took the drink that didn’t arrive off our bill without hesitation. I don’t mind if things go wrong if they are dealt with swiftly and with grace, which these issues were. Food was fantastic as usual. My husband had the lamb which he said was really incredible. I had the fish and chips - excellent, crispy batter and super flakey fish. At the end of the meal they brought some complimentary jellies with ‘happy anniversary’ written on the plate. I’d only mentioned the anniversary briefly on the phone so they picked up on that well. Also have to note the ladies’ loos - love the interior decor and Bramley products so much! Conclusion: Lovely ambiance, great garden, gorgeous styling, fab food, good service. What’s not to love? Bill came to £100 for two of us - drinks, starters, mains, and desserts. The food here is pricey but you get what you pay for. A wonderful evening - will continue to visit.

Met family here for lunch. We were seated quickly and menus were provided. Food and drink were ordered and delivered in a timely manner. All good so far. However, I never felt we were getting value. Presentation was merely adequate and the taste experience left much to be desired. Staff were attentive at all times and the ambience quite pleasant but I left feeling I'd had my pocket picked.

We visited the Mutton to celebarate my birthday with our family four and two close friends. From start to finish the experience was warm and welcoming, the Mutton had a lovely buzzy atmosphere and as it was early evening the sun light was streaming through the back windows which was very nice. All of us bar one had the same starter - the duck pancakes, which were amazing - a really nice moden take on the dish with very fresh, fluffy pancakes sections. There were a mixture of mains, from Fish and Chips, steak to cottage pie. Everyone enjoyed their mains all were well cooked and tasty. The only slight negative was my steak had a little more gristle than I'd have liked - just got unlucky on the cut I presume. Service was very good - attentive but not overly so. Price was pretty high, the I think the quality justified it. Really nice touch at the end when they brough out a little Happy birthday plate. We'll definitely be back (in fact we're already booked up) and I'd highly recommend it.

WOW - first time any of us had been here, but we had heard great comments. It was a bit worrying taking 4 others out to a new venue but we hoped it would be good. It wasn't - it was GREAT. The staff when we arrived were quick to greet us and sit us, the temperature of the restaurant was spot on, the menu was great a the food SPECTACULAR ! The waiting staff could not be faulted and rest assured - we all loved it and will be visiting again. Its great to find a restaurant that is not too far away, that seems to be constantly serving great food.

Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Nice beer garden situated beside the river. Good variety of food, which was excellent. Service was quick, friendly and good. We're sat next to a rowdy table, but it was a Christmas party. Staff were aware and moved then when their dinner finished to another part of the pub to carry on their frivolities. Other guests were friendly and welcoming and chatty, but nicely. Overall great atmosphere, lovely food and a high standard of drinks available supported by friendly and good service
