The New Lanterns Restaurant in Plymouth

I have to say, I went into lanterns restaurant, and it was my first time in there the service was absolutely brilliant and friendly the food in there. Oh my God, so delicious. Even my family, I'm friends said exactly the same. I would love to go back there again.

13 of us went there on Sunday afternoon, three generations, all plymothians. The busy well established restaurant is located towards the bottom half of Cornwsll Street in the city centre. The seating was good, a row of tables ending at the window. However, when the door was opened, the wind blowing in cut life a knife. The restaurant started off being owned by Greek Cypriots as many are in the city centre. They know their business, with a good selection of meals, at reasonable prices, 2 courses was £18 I had a chicken curry with poppadoms and rice. It was nicely cooked and presented.I thought it was mild to start with, but come the end, my lips were burning. Other family members had starters of garlic mushrooms , prawn cocktails, etc. Followed by roast dinners, beef dishes, and rice. I didn't hear of any complaints, for dessert, I had coffee cheesecake. Why is cheese cake always served at room temperature in restaurants ???. I have had this experience several times! (I like it from the fridge) So generally all good with service and food, the only downside was that the toilets are located at the top of three steep flights of stairs. Slippery vinyl tiles all the way, with a hand rail coming away from the wall on the top right-hand side. Coming back down, holding onto the hand rail, I caught my fingers on the wall bracket. This journey could be perilous for seniors. It was bad enough for me, and I am only in my 60s I think I would go there again very convenient after a mornings shopping.

Fantastic service, quick and efficient, very pleasant staff, food was amazing, nice friendly atmosphere, will definitely be visiting again.

Me and the wife have been going New Lanterns for a few months now and all l can say is that every time we visited the food, and service was very good, that's why we keep going back and will continue to do so.

I ordered four take out roasts for my family, the restaurant was packed but they accommodated me so near Christmas I was unsure if they would, food was amazing all homemade and tasted fantastic even the veg was beautiful not overcooked everything you would expect from a home roast, very reasonable priced too , my elderly parents loved it as did I and the portions were big, would definitely use in the future, home cooked food at an amazing price! One of our party was vegan and his gravy was cooked separately, lovely place with great staff and fabulous chefs! Thankyou so much it was amazing 🤩

We booked last minute as it was close to our hotel. We were so pleased! Lovely atmosphere, amazingly hard working and lovely staff. The food was incredible. It was lovely to see all the chefs cooking in the open kitchen. We will definitely be going back next time we are in Plymouth. Would highly recommend

We eat here occasionally and in the past had good service but not so this time. We arrived at 12 minutes to 4 pm so should have been given the lunchtime menu. I used the facilities and came back and my friend then noticed we were given the menu for 4 PM onwards. I tackled the waitress about this and she said "What 4 minutes to go". We had issues with the order after that which I can't be bothered to go through. Due to greed and getting us the wrong menu we will not be returning. I think the lunchtime special menu should be 12.00 to 3.50 not 4pm because if you come at that time you will be made to pay a higher price. Once bitten twice shy.

Lovely rustic food, at a fair price.

For a Greek restaurant 2 of us was very disappointed with Greek salad & kebab was dry & nasty feta just no love 🤷‍♀️ sticky toffee pud not good horrible cheap sauce tasted like ice cream toffee sauce . Overall was noisy in there , Used to be a family fav, & haven’t been in a while but we won’t be rushing back . So sorry And I always make a point of giving great reviews , when I’m satisfied . So don’t feel good about not having a good experience !

Service was great, food and drinks were mediocre, and it had a great atmosphere, they laid out a special table for us for my son's 18th Birthday, and the place was clean and tidy, prices were what I expected them to be, so not a bad evening over all 🙂

A wonderful experience in this family favourite restaurant....food, service and standards always so so high,always a pleasure going there....no point recommending individual meals as EVERYTHING is absolutely spot on....the staff are always so friendly and helpful and know there stuff....highly recommend

Certainly, here’s a more formal version: --- I am writing to express my deep disappointment regarding an experience at your restaurant on November 5th at approximately 1:00 pm. Upon arrival, my party and I requested a table for three. The two waitresses on duty exchanged glances, displayed visibly unwelcoming expressions, and informed us that there were no tables available. To verify, I stepped outside and immediately placed a call to the restaurant at 1:03 pm, requesting a reservation for three. Within a span of three minutes, I was informed that a table was indeed available. This experience left me feeling profoundly unwelcome and unfairly treated. As a business owner in Plymouth for nearly a decade, I understand the importance of treating every customer with respect and inclusivity, regardless of their background. This experience has led me to believe that there may have been underlying discriminatory motives behind the service we received. I strongly encourage future patrons to avoid this establishment, as such treatment is unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

First time visit , it was a spur of the moment thing , we were shown to our seats , the lovely waitress was friendly and welcoming. The food was lovely plenty of it and for a lunchtime menu there was a lot to choose from. Will definitely be back for another visit 🥰

My wife had work in Plymouth in the late morning & we were staying overnight. We popped in for coffee mid afternoon & they were very welcoming. I asked if they could fit us in that evening & no problems. Arrived for our meal & the service was excellent. The hospitality was very Cypriot, which reminded me of my time there. Enough attention without being overwhelming. Food was excellent & I will eat here again. I have no hesitation in recommending it, other than it might get popular & we can’t get in!

The older waitress was extremely sarcastic and very rude at times. If it wasn't for the occasion I would have walked out.

If you are disabled don't go there as the toilet is up about 15 steps. They are not disability friendly at all .when I mentioned it. The answer I got was They have been up there for 16 years, and it's not going to change now

Really good food! We loved it here, and as we loved Greek food, we're surprised about how good it was, and only as we hadn't decided on a restaurant and stumbled upon it. My lemon sole was gorgeous (I had 2!) And perfectly cooked, and I had THE BEST tiramisu ever; creamy and not harsh with alcohol. I was full but not stuffed, which is what you want! My partner had a very tasty main, and gorgeous baklava (I only have photos of pudding!) Both beautifully presented. Service great, helpful and friendly, and the restaurant was busy, which for a Tuesday evening, was great to see and means others find it popular too. Highly recommend and we will be back.

This was the first time I had been to this restaurant, I went with a group of people for a birthday celebration. The staff were friendly, and the service was quick. The place was clean with a relaxed atmosphere, making you feel comfortable. The food was good.

I have never been here before, a work colleague recommended Lanterns so I thought we’d give it a try, as we walked in we were greeted by a friendly waitress who showed us to the table, we had the 3-course offer, I had creamy mushrooms, just veg roast, and jam roll for pudding. It was nice and hot and so were the plates, the food was delicious and stayed hot even to the last bite. I would go again and highly recommend Lanters.

Went here mid week, reasonably busy but great atmosphere, excellent service and exceptional food. The food was full of flavour, decent value for money and 100% worth a visit. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If I could give the service 6 stars I would. Food was amazing as well, all 4 of us were over the moon with the food, price for lunch deal was great as well, seeing as we were on a budget.

Never been before, popped in for a quick dinner solution. Food was exquisite, starter, main & dessert. Special mention goes to the Biscoff cheesecake, best I've ever eaten. Great prices on a Sunday / lunch. Service was friendly & efficient, previously visited a rival Greek style restaurant but from now on when visiting the city this will be my go too.

Lovely home cooking. Relaxed atmosphere and superb waiting staff. Chelsea was our waitress and could not have been nicer. We popped in for a quick impromptu lunch and had the set menu which was great value. Chelsea was so happy and pleasant, we felt very welcomed and had a really nice time.

I have to say a HUGE Thank you to the Staff for helping me and my family out last night, All “19” of us ! We had booked up in a different Restaurant 2 weeks previously to arrive and be told they had no record of r booking …. Within 30 mins of calling Lanterns we were in and seated and omg what service we had. The 2 female staff and the chief were trusted amazing. The food tasted fantastic and portion size was brilliant. We could not of asked for a better evening especially with my family travelling down that day to attend a funeral. We are truly grateful ☺️

Went with a party of five for someone's birthday, staff were clean and tidy service was very good . Very quite when we went there, so the food was served very quickly, which felt like we were rushing our meals. The food was very nice but the gammon was burnt on one side thats why I gave a four rating. Other wise it was very nice.

We were back in Lanterns with both of iur sons and our grandson to enjoy a wonderful lunch. Everything was, again, perfect.

Time Kept getting pushed back. There wasn’t any pictures of the food so I was unable to see what I was ordering. Due to this, I ended up paying £18 for lamb kebab that wasn’t what I thought it would be. Therefore I didn’t eat it and it went to waste. Gutted. The chips were overcooked too. Salad was over drenched in olive oil. Won’t order from here again.

We booked this table 1 day in advance as my friend was over from America. I had prawns( lush) and my 2 friends had meatballs, omg how nicexwere they. I had sirloin steak( amazing) and my friends had lamb kelfdico, omg what a meal that was. I will defo bring my family here for a meal, staff lovely, restaurant very modern and clean. The overall meal was amazing, thankyou so much guys/girls... Rocky....

Made very welcome by smiling waitresses Plenty of choice on menus. Quick excellent service, happy atmosphere. Open plan so could observe meals being cooked by chef who was very pleasant. Enjoyed being cosy and warm after being out in the rain. Nothing was too much trouble. Loved it.

Enjoyable but just an average dinning experience.

When I order a roast...I want sweet, dark, roasted carrots, parsnips and crisp roasties coated in meat juices from the roasting tray. I want stuffing and maybe some kale sautéed in garlic butter with fresh ground pepper and most importantly some nice browned roasted meat with herbs. What I got was machine sliced wafer thin boiled beef, boiled veg, boiled veg turned into watery mash, boiled/steamed kale, some roasties and a yorkshire pudding. I like the idea of being able to see the "live cooking" but seeing the microwaves being used so often takes away from the experience. It all felt a bit lazy and like corners had been cut, sorry.

Fantastic place, food and staff are superb!

First time ever visiting this place and it won’t be the last! I had halloumi fries and a halloumi burger. My bf had the prawns/shrimp and then the steak, which was fillet and gorgeous! No fat or gristle at all! Perfect throughout. My burger was good, as were the halloumi fries. I think I’m going to go for the garlic chicken next time as I spied that on another table and it looked beautiful. Staff were fantastic.

Exceptional food and really lovely helpful staff. Accommodated our own preferences on the lunch menu, the sirloin steak was cooked to perfection, 100% recommend. Everything else was just perfect. Go here or you're missing out.

My mini steak was huge, the stilton sauce lush.

I felt I had to write this review, 4 weeks before Morthers Day, I booked a table of 4 for 1.30. I received a telephone call a week before the booking, saying because I hadn’t paid a deposit, my booking was taken at 1.30 offering me 3.15. If they had called me to tell me I had to pay a deposit, I would have done so. I was so upset, they obviously over booked and made the deposit an excuse. I shall never eat there again, I felt totally let down. Poor excuse…. Especially for MOTHERS DAY

Ordered takeaway through just eat app. The order was not cheap but went with it trying somewhere new for take away Friday. They accepted the order but it never progressed. The delivery was pushed back numerous times and then cancelled. Left hungry and very unhappy! Won’t be trying them or using just eat again! Don’t waste your time waiting for a take away that’s not gonna be cooked let alone delivered!

The staff are all very friendly from the waitress to the chief. if you want a good meal and a hot one there's no other place like it

The restaurant was alright. Gcl was ok and well, not up to my spice meter. Generally, it's a decent food place. Their garlic mayo is delightful. Spacious enough for family & friends dinner. I would recommend this place whenever you want to try afforda ble prices in Plymouth.

Booked here as a large table for my mother's birthday. We enjoyed coming to Lanterns and visit often. However on this occasion they failed to deliver the quality experience we've come to expect. The food wasn't as good as it normally is with the rice and shish kebab being very salty and portions smaller, especially the desserts. Coffee/ hot chocolate was luke warm. However what really put the final nail in was how we were literally hurried to get up and leave as the next booking was early and waiting to come in. This I found incredibly rude and unprofessional will be booking elsewhere in future.

Once again a wonderful meal for 15 of us. Staff are excellent, attentive but not pushy. The food was amazing, with us all being served together, and cooked to perfection. A variety of dishes ordered including fish, roast, steak and chicken. I would recommend Lanterns, how busy the place always seems to be is a sign of its popularity.

Arrived as a group of 12 for a birthday meal, we arrived about 5 minutes early and were told our table was not ready as the previous party were still eating desserts, there was no waiting area so had to wait outside, not ideal in January! After 10-15 minutes we eventually got to our table, Service was good and starters and mains were served quickly and food was nice. Drinks ordered and delivered quickly. Dessert were not as good, Apple crumble was drowned in cream and desserts seemed to be brought rather than homemade. Overall an acceptable meal but I wouldn’t return.

We went for a roast today which was awful, I have been many times in the past and really enjoyed the food but not today. We had chicken which was dry and hard with black bits all over it ,the swede was positively runny and the carrots undercooked,, the potatoes and cabbage was ok but it was all lacking in flavour, my father couldn’t eat the chicken and picked at the rest. It cost £30 for one course. We will never go back

I adore this place, great food, big portions, great value and friendly service. The food only lost one star as Kelftiko isn’t traditional, it’s a roasted herb coated shank served with gravy and the veg from a British roast dinner….bring back the village recipe with the meat and potatoes stewed together with tomatoes, peppers and onions and I’d give it a 6 star review if I could

Beautiful restaurant refurbished 3 years ago. Lovely food . Great service and atmosphere.. I went here with my mother and friend. We we're all very happy with our food. I had chicken breast with peppercorn sauce. A huge piece of chicken breast with plenty of sauce came with vegetables. Swede carrots carrots cabbage and cauliflower plenty of it. Steaks, Burgers, Greek specialty, main meals. Lovely deserts. Very clean. Also outdoor seating. Highly recommend.

Great food - great staff. Would definitely return next time we’re down to Plymouth. Can recommend the steak, but judging by the empty plates on other tables, would seem everything goes down well.

Avoid! Went for dinner with my family, order was taken and 45 minutes later no starters, asked the waitress how long do we have to wait. Waitress came back to find the order was written on a note and left in the bar and not the kitchen. Food finally arrived, cod was wet and slimey, lemon sole was disgusting and mushy. Lemonades were flat. Waitresses did not apologise for the wait or take no notice. I would not come back here.

One of life’s little treasure finds,this is by far the best steak house in Devon,home made Chips an amazing Greek Salad and the pepper corn sauce is to die for,excellent service and super value,we took the boys & our granddaughters and everyones steaks were cooked to perfection,massive thank you to Benny & all the team,can’t wait to return 10/10 👌

Ate here yesterday for the first time ever. Before today I didn't even know about the place. But, oh my! It was absolutely gorgeous. Price for 2 courses, £17!! So at that price, although I am far from fussy, I didn't expect much, but it was insanely good. I couldn't fault a single thing from any of my courses. I had the Roast Belly Pork with potatoes and vegetables and loved it. I would quite like them to come and cook my Christmas Dinner for me!!! My mother in law had lamb shank, and it was huge! And so tender. The staff were great, really friendly and good with the children with us. The only reason the 'atmosphere' category is missing a star is that it was slightly noisy, BUT, that isn't really their fault. Its a small establishment and was very busy. I will be going back next time I'm in town, 100%!

What a wonderful restaurant! The staff are very attentive and friendly, and nothing seems too much. I had the best beef, so tasty with an abundance of all the veg you could dream of, really nicely presented and extra gravy if you wanted. The pavlova pudding was so good, crunchy yet chewy soft, lots of sauce and fruit. They were super busy, the place was packed, this only added to the wonderful atmosphere, 7 of us ate and had all 3 extremely tasty courses, such a quick turnaround, all done within 90 mins and no pressure from the attentive staff. Thank you so much for the wonderful meals, we hope to come back soon. Happy Christmas 🎄

If you are from Plymouth and looking for somewhere to go for lunch/dinner you’d know that once you past the sundial and in the ‘bottom of town’ you touching on risky turf. If you are looking for a decent meal at a decent price then this is for you. It’s decorated lovely, really cosy and has that family feel. We went during christmas time and it was done out lovely. It’s always packed so if you are popping in without booking you may not be seated, however I believe the large custom says it all!

First time we visited this restaurant, food was very nice, we were with our friends for a birthday meal there was about 17 of us. The staff were very efficient and friendly. The only thing I didn’t like was the toilets upstairs they were clean but the stairwell going up there was quite dirty.

To anyone on a national express stop over... Being 2 minutes away from the coach station this resteraunt is an absolute gem! Food arrives fast, and is exceptional! Lovely waitresses, all round good vibes and packed on a Tuesday night! Price is right too, what more can you ask for?

We are in Plymouth for one night only looking at Uni's with our son. Decided to eat here and really impressed. Really good choice and very tasty. We had the 2 course for £21 and 3 course for £25. Food great and staff really attentive, nice decor. Can't fault it in any way.
