The Plough in Guildford

We booked a festive menu online, but didn't get one. Not sure why. So we ordered from the standard menu. Two people ordered the liver but no liver available. Otherwise, food okay. No festive beer on tap which was a shame. This pub is not as good as it was when it was a Youngs establishment. But could be.

Despite living nearby for 40 years it's only the past couple of years we've used The Plough and we're occasional visitors, not regular enough to be known. We've never had a bad meal there or had any cause for complaint. I've enjoyed some very good steaks as well as sea bream and cod and haddock in sauces which are tasty and complimentary but not overpowering allowing natural flavours to come through. We've had some excellent pork a few times too. We've also enjoyed the home made ice cream, well sometimes as some of the flavours are a bit off the wall. Today we visited for Christmas Lunch, for some reason it was three courses for the price of two which made it a real bargain including a glass of fizz and chocolates. We'd pre ordered so didn't have to say what we were having, it just arrived. We both enjoyed the cauliflower soup with ciabatta with melted cheese and mushrooms and felt we'd eaten a meal after finishing just that. My wife enjoyed her sea bream and I the traditional turkey lunch though spiced red cabbage not really my thing. We just about found room for the desserts. This was a really good Christmas meal and apologies for leaving some. We're a week from Christmas Day, service was Christmassy and just right. Always found the staff very pleasant and helpful. PS Bring back the honey roast beetroot.

We’ve been coming here for nearly a decade, and it’s always been a favorite. The food is consistently excellent, and the atmosphere is just as enjoyable. While the restaurant recently changed hands and some of the familiar, friendly faces are no longer here, the new team is also warm and welcoming. The food remains fantastic, especially their Sunday roasts, which offer great value for money. In the summer, we love sitting outside, enjoying a delicious meal while playing backgammon. Plus, the fact that it’s pet-friendly is a big bonus for us!

Took friends from Sussex . My husband had the burger which was tasty . Myself and friend had the seabream , which sadly was disappointing. 2 pieces of fish on mash with a red sauce & 6 peas. All pretty tasteless.Her husband had the pie which did not look homemade ,but he said was ok.The staff were lovely & the ambience good.

I visited initially on a Sunday in October as part of a recce for a walking group to eat here. Despite being full to the gunnels and almost the end of the lunchtime session the staff fitted me in and I had a tremendous Sunday Roast. In December, having initially booked for 8 which then rose over time to 21 and then finally back to 14, Sara was accommodating throughout. On the day the food and beer were excellent and service was great. We felt very welcome throughout. I would certainly recommend the Plough to anyone, whether solo or in a large group the attitude of all the staff was positive and welcoming at all times.

Excellent Sunday roast with the family, and the dog! Good portions, cooked well in a classic country pub.

Randomly popped in with my family for lunch on Saturday. Pub is not huge, but it filled up quickly I would recommend booking a table ahead. Chap serving us was lovely and we didn’t had any issue with the service despite the fact that he was alone balancing everything in the place! Menu looked quite simple, but it was absolutely delicious. Simple pub food made very nicely. Their gravy could be a bit thicker but that’s just could be me. We had three different desserts all as equally good as the other, icecream was extremely scrumptious! Food was reasonably priced, especially that other places charge more for inferior quality meals. Will be returning in the future.

This is a proper pub that also happens to serve meals - you could go here for a few drinks very happily without feeling like you’re taking up table space from the food bit. That said, we mainly went to eat, and the food and service were excellent. The Plough serves pub food done perfectly in terms of the ingredients, portions and presentation, and it’s reasonably priced too. You will come across nearby Surrey Hills pubs that are similarly excellent in many respects, but The Plough runs them all close, especially in value for money terms. Will come again. Thank you.

Roast dinner was very good - large portion, well cooked and presented. Staff were friendly and attentive. Dog friendly. We’ll be back!

We had dinner at the Plough on a Thursday evening. Great atmosphere, service, beer and wine, as usual, but what distinguishes the Plough from other pubs in the area is the excellent quality of the food. We eat here every month or two and have never been disappointed. Keep up the good work and thank you!

Very nice lunch. As there was a large crowd in, service was a bit slow, but we weren't in a hurry! Have been several times recently and always enjoyed the good food. Hope to come again soon.

Great location. Friendly and knowledgable staff. Good food with a wide seleection of beers. Lots of seating inside and out.

My meal came cold and wasn’t on a warm plate. Had to be sent back. Veg was a load of mush with meat and Yorkshire piled on top. Roast potatoes not crispy. Food was tasteless and extremely disappointing. The waitress was polite but there was only 2 staff on and wasn’t adequate to cover the whole pub. I used to like going to the plough but it has gone down.

The waiter (bartender) was fantastic, super polite and friendly! The atmosphere in the pub is very calm and warm, very different from other pubs that I've been too. Not filled with a lot of loud people, pretty chill. The food was amazing, and pretty fancy (imo), all were presented very well. I'd said the food is very authentic, it kinda represents the country. Overall, really happy and satisfying with the food, would recommend it!!

Excellent pub food as always. Would like to see the Shere drop return as the main ale, it’s what brings me back as much as the food.

A little disappointed there was only a vegetarian offering apart from beef or pork on the Sunday lunch menu. The camembert was delicious.

The Plough is still a good pub but needs to settle on choice of draft beer. A return to Shere Drop would please most customers.

Whilst there has been a management change, delighted the Chef and front of house manager are still there. Sunday lunch as good as always, delicious food and excellent service. Looking forward to our next visit.

I’ve had many a pub Sunday roast, but this was outstanding. Huge portions, delicious gravy, melt in the mouth meat…and if you can’t choose which meat you want, there’s a dish where you can have them all on one plate, amazing!

We wanted somewhere halfway between Maidstone & Basingstoke and this pub was it, and it didn’t disappoint. We had a dog with us and the staff truly do look after our four j look egged family members. We all went for roast lamb and it was very nice. Puddings were good too. Great place and I’m sure we will meet here again

Update August 24: We are so pleased to have this lovely pub near us. We went for quizz night and even took part in it. The atmosphere is amazing, the food is lovely (well done chef) and the staff was really really lovely. This is one of the only pub when, despite having gone for a long time, we are never unhappy with the food. The quality is really high and consistent (plough burger is a must and the chocolate mouse is delicious) If you are in the area, I highly recommend it! We will come back as usual :)

This is a fun local pub with great atmosphere, delicious beer (Shere Drop) and reasonable food. The only disappointing thing was that three of the items on the dinner menu were unavailable at 6:30pm, including my favorite the scotch egg made with black pudding.

Food was good and catered for celiac guest; ruby was great fun and visited our table frequently.

As usual, atmosphere, service, food quality etc were all excellent. Getting a tad pricey, though. Will be interesting to see how things are in a few weeks time as a result of the change in ownership happening very soon now.

Had booked a table for a late lunch after a visit to Polesden Lacey. The staff were very understanding after most of our party had got lost en route! We had a great lunch and a lovely family catch-up! Thank you to everyone on duty on 1st August. We did appreciate it!

Friendly local pub, with Gastro food, a relaxed rustic garden with trees that made a great sun shelter! Limited menu but with plenty of variety on it. We enjoyed the black pudding scotch egg, and chicken schnitzel. Nice sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble to follow. Kids menu was good and although we didn’t need them we spotted colouring pencils. (Also dog friendly 🙂)

Definitely a pub for locals. It is located off the main area, but we'll frequented by regulars. I didn't buy food, just drinks, it was a whistle stop. The staff were pleasant and friendly. The place is 'rustic' but it won't stop you enjoying your drinks as will your dogs...they are welcome there. Disfruta.

Outstanding young man behind the bar so huge credit to him. The Sunday roast was incredibly average. Completely edible but nothing about it or the pub excluding said bar tender made me want to go back.

Very enjoyable quiz night attracted a full house. Enjoyed a tasty burger with great chips, one of the 'small plates' on offer. My preference for chunky chips accommodated without question. On another occasions my meal of pork tenderloin went down particularly well.

Lovely food tonight. Service by Annabelle and Paula was first class....well done ladies. Food lovely but please add extra desserts...brownies, cheesecake for a change. Should make one end for dog owners and restaurant for no pets. Anyone I speak to doesn't go because of this. Not everyone wants dogs around them when eating (as much as we love them).

Was here last Wednesday and my meal was good. My wife's meal was the Chicken Escoplope, however the chicken was cold, it had processed breadcrumbs and bland. When asked by staff if we were we happy, my wife said no and said she really didn't want to pay for it as it was only half eaten. This was sorted. Please note we eat there all the time and rarely do we complain about anything and if we do there's a reason and the manager has agreed. Plus we spent a lot of money there and went nearly every week (not any more). How are you supposed to give feedback for a meal if it's not good and then get an email like below ? Now I get an email from the company saying they won't accept a booking from us as we have complained too much !!! If they want to lose local people then that's fine but even when I spoke to the owner he said he had comped too many meals to us. But I said only if we complained, which you are allowed to do and we always tip bring friends, etc. Very bad way to keep your business

We called on the day with 1/2hr notice and they were very kindly able to offer us a table at short notice on a Sunday. On arrival we received a lovely warm welcome and were shown to our table. The pub was busy with a great atmosphere. The food was excellent. 5* all round and we will definitely be booking in advance next time. Highly recommended.

Was a delight to return to our favourite Pub/Restaurant for Saturday dinner. Our meal was superb, a Steak and Mushroom pie, wrapped in yummy shortcrust pastry, supplied with oodles of gravy in a jug, plus Spring greens, and superb big chips. A generous portion. Love this place. We got chatting to a great couple. If you happen to read this (Lawrence of Arabia and Emma from Bookham get in touch via Facebook). Nine members of our family met at the Plough for Sunday lunch. Everyone was able to find something they liked on the menu. The food was excellent! And the staff were very friendly and helpful! We will definitely be back again!

A nice pub with a good atmosphere, a traditional menu and reasonably priced food. Friendly staff, we were well looked after and served promptly with nice hot food and plenty of it. I would have liked to see a couple of veg/vegan dishes and I was surprised that when we ordered coffee there was no milk alternative. We were also surprised that although we ordered our coffees at 9pm we only just managed to be served as we were told the machine was going to be switched off! Could it not have been switched on or a kettle switched on. However, we did get our coffee, so the problem wasn't ours, but we weren't the last in the pub when we left at 10pm. Otherwise a good evening, but I would have to think twice about going again, only because of the veg/vegan options. I suffer from dairy and lactose allergy as well as a beef allergy which left me with nothing to have which wasn't going to cause me some problems. I know my allergies are not exactly common, but not to have oat milk at least is a mistake, I believe, as it's offered in so many other places. Nonetheless, my friends were well satisfied with the menu but were puzzled by the coffee issue.

The staff at the Plough are always welcoming and friendly and the table service is good. There wasn't gluten free vegan option available on the menu. At very short notice the chef made a delicious mushroom stew with new potatoes, greens and peas. It was well seasoned, good presentation and delicious. This is a real indicator that food is freshly cooked by the staff and that they know how to cook.

This is such a great pub, the food is always top notch and staff go above and beyond. We come for the quiz and it’s a great atmosphere. When we moved to the area we were hoping to find a nice local pub where we really felt welcome and this is it!

Fantastic Sunday lunch and the loveliest young staff serving us, absolutely charming! Their huge beer garden was also nice. The food was phenomenal and well-priced for a roast. Good range of beers including local Shere Drop.

Another great Sunday lunch. Always good to know somewhere that you know is consistently good both in food quality and service. The slow roasted pork loin is my favourite whilst my wife loves the nut roast which was tastefully moist and succulent. Peter and his young team were excellent. The young lad that was being trained was very attentive and polite, making us feel very looked after, well done.

Good selection of food but as ever the Fish & Chips was excellent. Fresh, not overly covered in batter and a very good choice. Good service from a small friendly team.

We visited The Plough yesterday for Mother's Day lunch. I must admit, our expectations were mixed as we knew it would be a really busy time to visit, but I have to say we were all totally impressed with everything. I had requested an extra seat two days previously and, although I wasn't told no, I got the feeling that it might be a bit of a squash! However, when we arrived, our table had been extended and I felt that the staff had gone above and beyond to accommodate us. We really couldn't fault the service at all and were impressed at the numbers of staff working to make the day run smoothly. Everything was perfect, especially the food which was really really good. We will definitely return!

We came here for a late Sunday lunch and had an excellent veggie nut and mushroom roast. Staff were friendly and attentive and the pub had a nice cosy feel. Will definitely be back if in the area!

Good Sunday lunch. The place was really busy but the.service was excellent and quick. Extra gravy supplied when requested. We had 2x pork and 2x beef all really good. Delicious crumble and sticky toffee pudding to follow. Yum !!

First visit, excellent warm welcome. 3 specials and a sensible menu, sensibly priced with enough choice for us. We enjoyed all the food and the happy atmosphere. The pub could do with a bit of redecoration in parts but the warm friendly atmosphere made up for that. We’ll definitely return.

Nice pub with pleasant atmosphere. Food was a bit limited, no specials board and very limited for vegetarians. Food was nice but nothing to write home about.

This was my third trip to The Plough. The food is always good, and the team were very helpful in swapping out some items for dietary needs, while having a good range of gluten free options on the menu. We've eaten inside a few times, but I really enjoy the garden and live music in the summer, it is a great location to idle away an afternoon with friends and pooches. The bartenders and servers are always nice, even on busy days. Ruby the pooch is a delight.

Updating in response to owner reply: We visited recently as family of four for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately the menu we saw online was different to that offered on the day with no alternatives to roast dinner other than the children's menu (and weren't advised when we booked). My teenage son is a little too old for the children's menu and had wanted the fish and chips, but was told it wasn't possible. Overall the roast was better than we've had elsewhere (the roast beef was very good), however the parsnips were almost raw and one of the pork belly servings was mostly crackling and fat with hardly any meat (which it was hard to find as food was in a single pile on the plate). We were aware that the pub is dog-friendly and this isn't usually a problem, but there was a dog wandering around the pub, looking for and eating scraps from under our table as well as sitting on the furniture. Some of our party have allergies and also fear of dogs, so sadly didn't make for a comfortable atmosphere for us.

I visited this pub with my walking group. What a great place to stop. They already had set up tables for us and the food served was hot (sometimes we visit pubs and the food is cold because we’re a big group) and very tasty. I’m not vegan but I tried their vegan beans with peppers, avocado etc and it was stunning!

Very friendly service and a good menu with something for everyone. The specials were just that too, and good value. One niggle - i ordered a chicken and avocado sandwich and was a little surprised that the chicken was processed sliced chicken… would have thought it could be proper chicken breast but not a huge deal, just unexpected. will definitely be back soon!

Lovely welcoming pub with lots of locals. Food was delicious but table for four right next to bar so very noisy to try and talk and people kept pushing past. Would request a table on booking next time.

Booked for dinner here as it's dog friendly and we'd had a nice meal a few month ago. It did not disappoint: it was 'Pie Tuesday' and we had excellent Steak and Ale Pies. Squid starter was good too, and desserts. In fact we haven't found better food anywhere in the area yet. A resident dog plodded around delightfully.

Lovely Sunday lunch as this pretty hidden pub - 20 mins from Leatherhead . First visit. Great choice of roasts (not all pubs do a lamb roast.) Great service, tasty food , desserts were fab too, dog-friendly. What’s not to love!
