Landlord is really helpful and welcoming. Food is just good pub food nothing fancy which suited me fine, and good beer. Room was very cold no heating at all. And the TV remote didn't work would only turn the TV on but wouldn't select channels or even turn it back off again. Room seemed clean until you looked under the bed! Bathroom was clean

Very disappointing visit went in a group of 4 for Sunday lunch ignore the big banner on the fence and blackboard at the entrance that states Sunday carvery because it doesn’t exist and is false advertising so we had to settle for an extremely basic menu when it arrived the portions are what I would call small when it came to ordering desserts you have to go through to the bar and look at the black board on the wall and what a disappointment 4 different sponges with custard or ice cream and chocolate fudge cake which they didn’t have no sundaes cheesecakes trifles ice creams who wants winter warmers on a beautiful day !!! No one came to ask us if all was ok The beer garden if you can call it that is a total mess overgrown grass and weeds empty hanging baskets and furniture that needs a good paint I think the fact only 2 more people in on a Sunday lunch says it all we only went here for a change but have learnt our lesson and will stick to the Black Bull at ugthorpe at least when they advertise a carvery you know you are going to get one and damn good it is to we will never go back here so take heed people you have been warned !!!

My partner and I stayed for one night via Buy a Gift. We would not recommend this hotel. The room was very basic and not particularly clean. The bed was extremely uncomfortable. On arrival we noticed we had only one towel in the bathroom and so requested a second which never arrived. We had an evening meal in the pub and, although neither of us particularly rated the food (it was adequate at best), we had an enjoyable time as the service was good and the wine was reasonably priced. Although the breakfast was pleasant and hot the bar area it was served in was dark and we got the impression that the staff had not opened the curtains to avoid us seeing the sticky floor of the pub as it hadn’t been properly cleaned following a party the night before. Sadly an unpleasant experience.

This return visit was the last here. We have always been highly satisfied with Sunday lunch but today was so shockingly disgusting we will not visit again. Meal at 14.00 not particularly late however there was no mash and no cabbage, no explanation or replacement on our plate for this. My pudding was burnt black and the cauliflower cheese had been warmed up several times resulting in it being brown and not edible. We took this up with staff and then the manager who was so out of her depth and did not handle the complaint professionally at all. She was rude and said she would speak to the staff about the lack of informing customers when food isn’t available. When we spoke about the state of the food being served she simply said leave it and walked away. We highlighted the state of the outside area which was littered. Dog farces to the side of the door cig buts overflowing generally didn’t look appealing. She replied well I haven’t done the farces. What an attitude!! What has happened at this pub! Clearly something has changed since our last visit.

We were on a family holiday in Whitby and decided to book a pub meal. We researched many places and chose this one as the menu online seemed to accommodate vegetarians and children. Unfortunately, when we got there, their menu had changed and some of the options we were excited to order were no longer available. Added to this, several of the items on the menu had run out. 80% of us weren't able to order what we wanted. Although there was a sign asking us to not order at the bar and wait for table service, we had to go to the bar of we wanted a drink as no one came to ask us if we wanted one when our glasses were empty. When the food arrived, one of the meals was wrong. A sweet potato and spinach pie had been ordered but it had been knowingly replaced with a quorn mince and onion pie. They seemed to think it was OK to replace a vegan pie with any other vegan pie without letting us know. We refused the meal and did not pay for it. The rest of the food was distinctly average although my little boy did enjoy his meal. I would advise people to look elsewhere if looking for a nice meal in and around Whitby.

Firstly, parking at this property is not ideal - if you have a large car you will struggle. There are about 20 spaces all very tight. Secondly, this is a pubs pub - not a food pub or a restaurant so don't be confused about the atmosphere you are walking into. There are no drinks menus, very limited options, they had ran out of a lot of the menu items and service is very slow. The staff here are friendly and helpful but inexperienced. They are not front of house or waiters, they are bar tenders so don't expect restaurant service. The food here is good pub food but not exceptional by any means. The price point reflects the quality. Fantastic from start to finish. Been past many times whilst travelling to Whitby. Went in as a family of 3 adults 1 child, given the last available table. Service was friendly. Food took the standard time you’d expect fresh, well prepared food to cook. This isn’t your standard ping-ding chef Mike cooked pub food. One had the ribs which smelt incredible. I had the blue cheese burger which was cooked perfectly and the flavours were balanced. Fish items were fresh tasting and battered amazingly. The food is well put together without being pretentious. All in all a great stop to eat, would like to go back on the next visit. Credit to the staff for dealing with a table of ‘what is’ ‘where is’ ‘why is’. Wine is wet Chinese sauce is Chinese sauce, not much else to it.

Firstly, a large part of the menu was unavailable, including fries, burgers and some of the starters/sides, which as a vegetarian, limited my choices. Then the food was very poor starting with over cooked/microwaved Camembert (one served in a desert bowl!) with toast as there were also no baguettes left. Next the meat for the Sunday roasts consisted of undercooked beef, cremated beef and raw pork. Considering the very long time it took for the meals to arrive, we were shocked that not one element of the meal was done properly. However the waitresses were, on the whole, very apologetic and friendly as the manager suggested we ‘call time’ comped the whole meal. Will never return.

Away for a family weekend we noted this pub had good reviews and the online menu looked good. We arrived and we’re shown in to the garden room which was cold. No matter, we were having a family weekend together. The starters on the menu were not available so we had the choice of the items on a blackboard. There were no burgers available. For the starters, most of us ordered the Camembert and I asked for the fish cakes. We were then told there were no fish cakes so no starter for me then. We were then told there was no baguettes left so it would be toast to accompany instead! We waited for ages to be served. The Camembert arrived in bowls and had obviously been shoved in the microwave and blasted. It had boiled over and was a horrible greasy mess. I have never seen anything so unappetising. We were so looking forward to the carvery lunch, as my son said “how wrong can you get a carvery lunch.”Little did we know! The roast beef well done, arrived charred beyond recognition. It was black as the heart of Dracula. The medium roast beef was raw, literally dripping blood! Perhaps appetising to a vampire but not to anyone else. The turkey was pork, when we pointed this out they brought the turkey. However the really scary thing was the ‘Yorkshire puddings’ were raw, the pigs in blankets were red inside and almost warm but not cooked, and all the meat was cold. At this point we began to fear our family weekend was going to turn into a weekend of food poisoning and vomiting. We asked to speak to the manager. On the plus side I could not fault the waiting staff who were friendly and apologetic and explained the ‘chef’ had only been here a week. I don’t know where he learnt to cook, but the day where he learnt about the fundamentals of hygiene and ensuring food is properly cooked he must have been skiving. The manager listened to our concerns and jumped to the offer to call it a day. So we left starving, and called into the local spar to buy Immodium - just in case. If you like living dangerously and dicing with death then please go and try the food at The Plough. If you like hot, tasty we’ll cooked Sunday lunch and value your life avoid the Plough at all costs!

A pre-arranged extended family meal of 3 generations. Two days later and we are all still talking about how much we enjoyed the meal, the pub , the ambience and the staff. This was an important celebratory meal and although it was a Christmas fare, was exceptional. Starters included, Ham hock terrine, salted beetroot and blue cheese salad, curried parsnip soup and prawn cocktails. The soup just smelled amazing and by all accounts the salad was one of the best ever! You could not ask for more of the Turkey main course, all the trimmings and the pigs in blankets were probably the best ever? I would dare to suggest locally sourced? Desserts were plentiful, Christmas pud, sherry trifle, Black forrest gateaux and cheese board. The table layout looked delightful and there was plenty of room for us all. To everyone at the Plough. Thank you so much for such an enjoyable evening.

Food okay but expected better. Cold upon arrival. Staff messed orders up. No sugar for my coffee, no milk alternative for lactose intolerances. No pudding because they were apparently busy, when one of the reasons we'd gone was because they had vegan cheesecake on the menu, no actual proof this dessert exists. Do not go if you have mobility difficulties, no room for a wheelchair and a long walk to the loo's with a few stairs to negotiate. Don't think I'll be going again.

The reviews say this is a warm and friendly pub, we didn’t experience anything of the sort, but more like the complete opposite! My registered disabled wife attempted to use the toilet before considering use of the bar / food facilities, but she was greeted with complete animosity and told to leave all because she wanted to use the toilet first! We certainly wouldn’t recommend this pub.

The food was outstanding. Very well cooked and flavoursome. The Pork Belly Bites (a personal favourite) were slow cooked overnight and melt in the mouth. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is that this pub didn't offer a bar service, but was table service only. This made the initial experience of being directed to sit down by the manageress very businesslike and quite unwelcoming. However, once established at the table, the staff were very friendly and helpful. Nevertheless, I would have no hesitation in recommending The Plough if you are looking for great tasting food with generous portion sizes.

Ham was over cooked and tough, chips heading towards cremated and the salad with meal was brown and not appetising. The waitress asked if it was OK, I told her what was wrong but only replied "oh"and walked off with out plates . Seemed the 3 waitresses where interested in their social life . The Plough came highly recommended but feel disappointed

One star for the lunch, chef had explained we needed to order quickly & one for the young girls that bought it. Owner /manager didn't want us to be there, 15 mins before kitchen closed. Made us feel very unwelcome. When we left..... Empty bar apart from the male owner /manager talking to local couple, which was obvious by the conversation..... He totally ignored us, no goodbye, thankyou, nothing. This pub looks nice from outside by the flowers, but don't be fooled, awful beer garden, not tourist friendly, not reccomnded, one to avoid.

Just good old fashioned Pub Grub is the best way to explain this eating place. Normally you will have to book as they get very full up in the summer months. The staff we found extremely friendly and accommodating. You cannot say more really than not over expensive. and food enjoyable, but not if you are wanting A La Carte.

The food was considerably better a few years ago when we last came. The homemade fish cakes were legendary. Now everything is straight out of the freezer, into the fryer. We had a few starters and they were all vile and inedible, the roast potatoes for example are not roasted, you can smell the freezer smell on them and they have clearly been deep fried. So many better local and delicious starter options could be offered (and cooked quickly).

We recently stayed at The White Horse and Griffin in Whitby, and it was certainly an experience to remember! The hotel is housed in a very old building, which gives it a lot of character and charm, though it’s clear that age has left its mark. While the structure is understandably not in the best condition, our room was clean, the bedding fresh, and we had a comfortable stay. There’s also a bit of a spooky reputation surrounding the place, and while we didn’t encounter any paranormal activity, I’ll admit I was half-expecting to! Breakfast was a highlight for us – we all opted for the full English, and the portions were generous and well-prepared. It was a great start to the day and set us up for exploring Whitby. The only downside I’d mention is the smell in the bar area as you walk in. It had a bit of a musty, wet dog odor, which wasn’t the most pleasant. But given the age of the building, it’s something we could overlook. All in all, we had a lovely stay, and I’d definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a quirky, historic spot in Whitby.

Called on the off chance as we hadn't booked on Sunday lunchtime. Although many tables we reserved, they managed to give us a lovely table in the window. We ordered 2 steak pies with chips and vegetables. The pie and chips were already on the plate and we were given a tureen of veg which consisted of new potatoes.carrots.cabbage and cauliflower, all cooked to perfection. The pie was ob cooked on the premises a big square each, loaded with tasty meat in a lovely pastry. The chips were nicely cooked brown and crispy, chunky, also not the usual frozen type. The food came with a large gravy jug too. Altogether a lovely meal and would definitely recommend.
