The Plume of Feathers in Epping Forest

Living in this area over forty years we have used this pub since it was a proper pub and witnessed all the changes throughout the years . We arrived at 1pm to find there was no ale available. All four pumps were turned off. The staff appeared to be disinterested about any availability of having any put on. Is this through mismanagement, incompetence or is this pub not wanting to cater for all customers needs? Usually some ales may be out or not ready but to have none is mot acceptable.

This is a lovely friendly family pub. The staff are excellent. Chef Alex is great. Great place to come to.

Since Josh has taken over the plume of feathers it has made such a positive impact on the community and also going into the pub. I’d never used to go into the pub but since it’s had a new manager take over it’s drastically change for the better! Me and my wife go into the pub every night on the way home! Such a lovely atmosphere.

Great space for a girly catch up

Went for lunch today food was ok . Didn’t realise it had turned into a dog friendly pub . Maybe a separate part of the pub could be put in place for owners & their dogs if they come for a drink or some food. Not great when your eating and you’ve got dogs everywhere

Went for a works Christmas lunch yesterday, first time ever at this pub. The food was great. The chicken starter was fantastic and it was the best Christmas roast I have had for a long while. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. Definitely visit again.

Nice relaxing atmosphere and friendly staff make this an ideal place for couples and small groups. I haven't tried the food personally, but there are always people enjoying food there even midweek, which speaks volumes in all fairness. It's a clean, well kept pub that never disappoints and is my favourite place in the area for a quick drink or a nice evening with company.

I always like the Plume and Feathers, it has a relaxed atmosphere, the staff are friendly and helpful (for instance the young bar girl helped me take my drinks to our table, no-one else was waiting to be served). The P&F has recently been refurbished and now it looks much nicer than before when it was a bit run down. It's a nice place to spend an evening.

Fantastic pub, I just wish the students would order rounds instead of 1 drink at a time.

I’ve visited my fair share of pubs across the UK, but I must say this was by far the most disappointing experience we’ve had. My family and I recently moved to Loughton, and, eager to explore the local scene, we decided to give this pub a try. Unfortunately, we will never be returning. We arrived around 11am, having checked online to confirm that the pub opened at that time. We were hoping to get some food for our young child, but upon entering, we were met with poor service right from the start. We greeted the two staff members on duty—one a young blonde waitress, who was polite and friendly, and the other, a darker-haired waitress who merely looked up, rolled her eyes, and returned to her screen. While I could chalk up the latter’s rude behaviour to early morning grumpiness, it left me wondering why someone would work in customer service if they can’t be bothered to engage with patrons. Things only got worse when we tried to order food. We were told that the kitchen didn’t open until 12pm—despite the pub’s advertised opening time. We had come expecting to order immediately, especially with a hungry little one in tow. Adding to our discomfort, the pub was freezing inside. It’s hard to believe that this was simply a case of the pub needing time to warm up—it was consistently cold, and the lack of any effort to address it was both surprising and off-putting. After placing a relatively simple order at the bar (two drinks, one appetizer, and three mains), the wait began. It took an hour and a half for my lasagna to arrive, and when it did, it was the vegetarian version—despite my clear request for meat. The waitress insisted that I had ordered the vegetarian option, which was simply untrue. When I politely questioned her, she didn’t acknowledge the mistake and instead insisted I had ordered what was served. After requesting the correct dish, I was told it would take another 30 minutes to prepare. At that point, I had lost all patience and declined the offer, which only seemed to irritate her further. Meanwhile, my husband’s fish and chips arrived, though he had requested French fries instead of chips. He said it was the worst fish and chips he had ever had. The batter was soggy, the fish was clearly frozen, and it tasted far from fresh. My son’s mini roast, thankfully, was decent, but by then, the experience had been so uncomfortable that we were eager to leave. To add insult to injury, we had already paid in advance for our meal, but no one offered to refund us the difference for the food we didn’t receive. We had to go up to the bar ourselves and ask for the adjustment. In summary, this was an absolutely dreadful experience. The service was inattentive and unprofessional, the food was subpar at best, and the environment was uncomfortable to say the least. I’m usually understanding as someone who works in hospitality myself, but this experience left a lot to be desired. I can’t help but feel that the staff—particularly the manager—could benefit from some serious training on how to treat customers with courtesy and respect. We will not be returning, and I would strongly recommend others to avoid this pub as well. There are far better options in the area that actually make you feel welcome.

Just want to say how good amber was behind the bar tonight. A member of staff had gone home sick so left them short staffed (2 staff members) girl collecting glasses was still working hard but had no sign of being in a hurry. Great atmosphere and had a great night. New manager needs to keep an eye on drugs being taken in the toilets.

good local nice john smiths -visited again saturday afternoon sat outside in the sun for a couple of "pigs ears" -very pleasant................recently refurbished no john Smith's but still a great pub and even friendlier staff and cleaner toilets timmy Taylor's was a great pint

The food took 45 minutes to arrive, and this was early afternoon so not during busy times! The food was burnt,deffo a place not worth eating at!

Lovely staff. Decided to try the food again as the roast wasn’t great last time . This time tried the short rib. Very small and cold veg again! Disappointing for the money.

What happened to the roasts! Not fresh, appeared to be reheated but not enough as luke warm. No beef. Chicken was a lump of dry and rubbery meat with bones in. 3 small roast potatoes and a few cold cubes of veg. Freezing in the restaurant but we only noticed this when we got a drink and sat down. Had to keep our coats on. Then people turned up with a dog that was let off the lead and sat on a chair. Totally unacceptable in a place of food. Was there a few weeks ago for the roast and was lovely so took a friend back. Was embarrassed to choose this place to take them.

Just what we were looking for: good menu and special offers. Atmosphere, quiet with background music, comfortable chairs, only downfall a little chilly,partly due to change in the weather .

Dinner for 6 of us last night. The food was good, you won't get better value than the set menu deals. My steak was cooked to perfection. Everything we received was fresh and well presented. You cannot go wrong with the chocolate brownie! The 2 bar staff were brilliant. Friendly, efficient, attentive and constantly busy; whether it be serving customers or cleaning tables.

Standard pub with wide selection of beers and food available which were reasonably priced

We both had the open steak ciabatta both had sickness and diarrhoea for next two days. Steak did not smell good and mushrooms tasted strange.

Used to come here for Sunday lunch a couple of months ago and it was really good but came here after refurbishment and i don't know what they've done to the Sunday roast dinner but it was horrible where's the beef gone and sliced chicken which used to be so good now replaced with dry tough chicken with bones and the vegetables were horrendous what's happened to the lovely roast dinner we used to get won't be going there again

Having come to our local for the past 3 years disgraceful customer service received. Tge barman was rude aggressive and totally not suitable for a hospitality job.

The food has improved massively. It's more expensive now than it used to but it's worth it.

What happened to the menu? Totally disappointed. I fully understand trying to claw back some money on the dodgy refurbishment but seriously, hunters chicken is now a breaded piece of chicken with cheese and bacon on top. Chicken, bacon, avocado salad is awful, two small strips of chicken, two thumb nail pieces of avocado and fatty rind of bacon. Onion rings dont exist anymore, they are onion fries, supposerly, bits of onion, deep fried and dripping in dirty grease. Spoke to staff who agreed, menu has changed and have had alot of complaints. Was honestly a regular in their but not anymore. Staff are lovely and was honestly embarrassed ut not surprised when I spoke to them about my concerns. You really need to look at this as you will loose alot of custom

Went to the newly refurbished Plume and Feathers today, for a drink and roast to say I'm disgusted with the roast that where served to us ...! I was too embarrassed to complain the chicken leg and 3 small potatoes and little piece of veg....I will not be going back. I used to really like the pub. I have tried to telephone the plume twice also left a message no reply from them??

Food terrible..wouldn't bring out the birthday cake I bought with me and that was requested in the booking. I was handed it back in the bag. Won't go again.

Sadly everytime we come here they have run out of either gammon or mixed grill and certain beers. Surely if you are running out of food and beer items it means you are not ordering enough. A business can only sell what they have in stock. Would come over more as only local, but to go to the bar to order food and be told we have run out of that item is not condusive of encouraging regular business and recommendation. Thanks to management for response. Look forward to visiting again after refurbishment.

The visit was for my birthday and although we often visit I had looked at all the pub restaurants within a 5 mile or so radius and was impressed with menus so came back to the Plume as the selection and quality of food is great

Went for breakfast, after a long walk. I arrive at 10.40. Food only artive arround 10 past 11. I was I think the only person there so it was not busy . The girls were nice and they apologised for the delay. Coffe was really good . The food was bad. I had an English breakfast. The tomato undercooked and cold, the egs cold, the mushroom cold . Beans were just a spoon on the middle of the plate. Sausages and bacon were done nice and surprisingly hot. The hash brown was quite cold and undercook. Per total, it's not really a nice experience.

Popped in for lunch. After ordering food, we waited for 40 mins and had to go to the bar to ask how much longer it would be. Within a minute, the food came out after the bar person went into the kitchen. All three dishes were luke warm. I couldn't be bothered to say anything as we were all hungry. The pub was really cold, it didn't seem to have any heating on. Won't be rushing back, I'm afraid.

Absolute dump of a place , filthy, grimy , cob webs every where tables not cleared even knowing wasnt busy, drink glasses dirty , went to the toilet and decided was time to leave, toilets broke , flooded, needs maintenance and cleaning bad , and to top it all off , staff then nibbled at a plate of food which other dinners left . Ember inns should be ashamed of this place

Actually there was nothing great about it, the food wasn’t very good, the table wasn’t cleared in the 3 hours we were there, we were having to clear the tables ourselves. On the whole it was a really disappointing experience.

The service is good but the pub is in dire need of refurbishment. Stones missing from the entrance stairs, broken windows, tatty carpet and threadbare chairs just some indication of the state of the pub. Won't be rushing back.
