The Red Onion in Staffordshire Moorlands

We went hear last week as a treat for a family member I hadn't been for many years but the reviews looked ok. Arrived to a empty restaurant and no staff to be seen we were shouting for someone attention for a couple of minutes but to be honest in hindsight we should have just left. When someone did final show up we ordered our food and in all fairness the food wasn't bad and as we were the only people there the service was good....but as the night went on we noticed the older guy( may have been the owner) asleep in the chair behind us and a young waiter was dancing like he was pirsest by the devil to some music chanel on the TV at the back of the room, in all fairness we did find this funny but we had just drunk a bottle of wine. The best was when the bill came, our fault as we didn't check it but when I did the next day to split it I noticed they had not charged menu prices they had put extra on the poppadom starters put an extra £1 on 2 of the 3 mains and the best £7.60 for a garlic cheese nann and to top it all my partner left a tip 🤣 so if you do go just choose your day carefully and check your bill

Tasty food and fast service. Shame to see it so quiet but enjoyed it nonetheless.

Ordered a take away for the family - several main meals, and side dishes The quality of the food was first rate, each individual dish had it's own distinct flavour, fitting the description on the menu Having spoken with the proprietor, who is also the chef (with over 20 years of experience), it is apparent that all dishes are cooked from scratch, clearly not variations of a generic base Portions were generous - sufficient to have left overs for the next day! Would highly recommend this Indian restaurant from a take away perspective, have not dined in Great value for money - 20% reduction online, absolute bargain considering the quality and the large portions

For a year or so I've always been very happy with the food from the red onion, but with my last 3 food orders the qaulity has dropped considerably. The chicken has been over cooked so it's tough as leather, also the food has been under seasoned, tasteless and bland, the sauce has become exceptionally greasy , swimming in oil or ghee, the rice has been boiled to death, and left swimming in water, I would say the qaulity has dropped within a month, and the delivery times has increased by a lot, i have given the red onion a chance as all restaurants occasionally have a bad day. But I've given 3 chances to redeem themselves but to no avail. I'm not going to use them again.

Omg absolutely fabulous, best takeaway we've had in years, chicken tikka starter and poppadoms then chicken tikka balti mushroom rice and garlic naan, your chicken was so tender. Thank you.

Ordered takeaway from Red Onion online to collect & got 10% off. Text & said being prepared. Ready when arrived. Lovely meals, big chunks of lean chicken, nice curry sauce. Paneer vegetable curry full of various veg & again tasty curry sauce. Naan bread was enormous & delicious lots of cheese & onion. Reasonable price as well. Will definitely order again

Absoloutely banging food. Freshest and tastiest chicken tandoori balti ive had in years. all round pucka food with great value prices. our new and hopefully forever regular ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ all the way

Ordered for home delivery food took 2.5 hours to arrive I rang after 1.5 hours and was told they were busy it took another hour to arrive

I dont normally leave bad reviews however i feel i have to on this case, ordered a food delivery , waited an hour and rang to be told it was on its way, am hour later i rand again to be told its with the driver, bearing in mind i live less than 10 mins away, half hour later no food and no apology, ive used this place loads with no problem , so dont know whats changed, so please pay cash on delivery not online, i would have been £30 down and no food, no fair red onion , get it sorted

Food is amazing, service is really good, the lad couldn’t do enough for us. We have take away all the time but sit in is even better, which didn’t think was possible.

Ordered a delivery from the red onion last night only to wait over 2 hours for it to be delivered! This is now the fourth time we’ve ordered and it has been over 2 hours to deliver!! No update from the restaurant to say they were running late! Not even a courtesy text! Shocking service and will not be ordering from here again! If I could give zero stars I would.

Won’t be going back! Ordered a collection and turned up by staff were playing Fortnite so took time to be served, then the card machine wouldn’t work - supposedly a known issue - so I needed to do a bank transfer or pay cash - no acknowledgment when I said puts me off the ever coming back. Mixed starter was quite nice, naan wasn’t toasted / baked well and red onion curry had minimal to no flavour. Sad to say, first and last trip. Love a good Indian takeaway, this isn’t one though.

Terribly slow take away service, rang twice to ask where our supposed 25 min order time meal was. Don't mind if the food is prepared fresh but 1 hour 45 mins? My prawn korma had been cooked to its death so the prawns were like bullets! Had bad service before but thought we'd give it another shot - won't bother again tbh!

I ordered my first takeaway from this place tonight. The online order process was very simple and I especially liked the fact that you can choose various options and add ons for your meal. The price was fine and delivery came within half an hour. The food was piping hot and the lamb balti I had was outstanding, one of the best I've ever had with the lamb cooked to perfection. I will definitely be ordering from here again!!

Absolute crap services took well over an hour for food even though told 2 mins everytime I rand crap meal !!

A couple of months ago We had a reasonable meal here but the young staff weren’t very good at all . He was a young man not friendly was always on his phone paying no attention to us and we were the only ones in the restaurant on a Saturday night ! In fact the most I’ve seen in here on a Saturday have been two tables one being us .

Lovely curry and very friendly staff. Needs a total revamp of the business model, though. It was Saturday night, and the place was almost empty with only 5 or 6 tables in use. It seems to make most of its money on the takeaway side of the business. The bar is not stocked anymore, tables very basic with no finesse, staff / owners family (?) walking around with hands in pockets chatting. This is a relatively large restaurant in a well populated area serving a really good product. Spend a few pounds on bringing it up market, and it could be full every night.

This is our go to restaurant never had a bad meal very friendly staff good value will always go back

Ordered a takeaway tonight. Chicken tikka Biriyani, chicken madras were absolutely delicious. Had to wait an hour for delivery which was a little longer than I'd like but it was worth the wait. Plenty of proper chicken. 5*

Had a really good takeaway tonight, ordered by phone, delivered right on time. One meat eater, one vegetarian, all spot on. Definitely recommend

I go to the Red Onion quite often with friends or family... Eating in is by far a better experience having read some of these reviews. The service can be a slow, but the food is absolutely delicious! their menu is really good and they do have certain deals to make it good value for money. The guys who work there are always trying so hard to deliver a good customer experience, and they could do with a couple more waiting on staff when it is busy. But if you do eat in - you will not be disappointed. One point to make. take your own alcohol as they do not have a bar licence. so to be fair, this makes the night a lot cheaper than buying restaurant priced drinks!

Just ordered for my 3rd week in a row.. we live on ashbank. I am an experienced curry lady and the food from the red onion has been amazing recently. Chicken balti and jalfrezi delicious and full of flavour and nan breads always very moist. Can't stand dry bread! Support local you will not be disappointed! Thankyou x

Terrible service waited over 2 hrs food food and when it arrived was cold i tryed ringing 15 times and clearly the fone had been taken off the hook wouldnt recommend Terrible service and no apology

Order a furry for delivery. Arrived cold, I contacted the restaurant directly, spoke to 3 different people and still no solution . Not only was it cold but poor quality . The chips were warm ups, the keema naan was minus the keema . Terrible terrible place .

Fantastic British style garlic chilli chicken tikka dish and the cheese and onion naan to die for ! Absolutely tasty !

Just received a takeaway from red onion and must say very disappointed with the quality of food. We stopped using a while ago because of poor service and food but thought would give them another go. No poppadoms sent with order, no salad with starter which was disappointing and main course was poor. Needless to say we won't be using again!

Ordered a curry for me and the mrs really nice havent had a curry like it for a while and its great value for money big sized trays and the garlic naan was spot on only downside that it took 50 minutes for delivery but other than that honestly couldnt go wrong worth the wait be going back for sure!

Ordered £62 worth of takeaway for collection ,came at given time and still not ready, got order and girlfreind checked it in car...items missing went back and told them to check.. indeed items were missing... sorry about that.. we're really busy.. ok considering no-one was in the restaurant. Received missing items and went on our way.. only to return as we ordered 4 x poppadoms and only had 2.. sorry doesn't work anymore for incompetence.. won't be back.😡😡

Have been bed bound for 2 days with suspected food poisoning.

Orderd the simplest of things off the menu litterally a chicken starter some masala sauce and a naan bread, waited an hour an half, ring in to b told they have been really busy an my order would take another half an hour! It was ready just they were struggling with drivers so my order would be cold by the time it reached me, No sorry no let me sort something out for you! Just collecting would be quicker... they were far too happy too cancel my order... will take my custom elsewhere in future as customer service skills were also shocking! If i could give no stars thats what it would be!!

Order from these guys on regular basis but last few times we are waiting over an hour when I'm told on the phone 45 mins very very unhappy with the service considering we spend over 25 pounds each time will not be using again id rather go back to ali barb's must faster service and much better price

Friendly owner, great food and good service.

Phoned up at 5.45 and ordered a meal for collection. Got there at 6.20 5he time they said it would be ready. No one downstairs so shouted hello .After 5 minutes no one came down so slamed the door hopping they would here it .no such luck shouted up the stairs at least 8 times. Made as much noise as I could when they eventually came down I had been there 15 minutes waiting. Got home and my meal was cold

Food came 30 mins late, chips where all stuck together, food was only just about walm I ordered a chicken paneer no paneer in the curry how how can it be called a chicken paneer very disappointed only nice thing about the meal was the poppadoms

Absolutely shocking yet again. A few weeks ago we ordered online, told and hour wait only to be kept waiting for over 2.5 hours. After numerous phone calls, with being told, 'its on its way', then having to go to the restaurant (even though I paid for delivery), for them to not know where the order was! Fast forward to today (and stupidly decided to give them another go) and again put in an online order, being told an hour wait (nobproblem with that) hiwever yet again.... almost 2 hours later and still nothing. Couldn't get through on the phone line, so again had to drive to the restaurant. The service recieved once in there was shocking, they didn't seem bothered. Whilst I was in there, 3 other people walked in having the same problem as myself, with some orders over 3 hours wait time. After waiting another 30 mins the manager finally came down, but again didn't seem bothered about anyone's complaint and gave a full refund just to shut everyone up, they clearly werent interested, no apology or attempt to resolve everyones complaint. I asked them where my food was (at this point its over 2.5 hours since I put my order in) and neither the manager or the staff member could answer me, MY ORDER HADNT EVEN BEEN COOKED! I will not be using these ever again and after hearing similar grumbles from other people, I feel these are going to lose a lot of custom unless they sorted this out.

The food and service is terrible. I Resturant should close down. My whole holiday experience felt like a nightmare because of this place

I have tried many curry houses in and around stoke-on-trent, and I always find myself coming back to red onion (especially after their new naan bread machine) the food is amazing, the service is superb always welcoming. Can't see me trying new places in the future as there's simply no point anymore.... Many thanks to red onion!

I've just finished the best Indian takeaway I've ever had. The food was delivered piping hot and when I opened my curry carton, which was the Red Onion special, I was amazed not to find a big pool of orange coloured oil pouring out of the container, like you sometimes get with other Indian takeaways. This meal was the best ever and the garlic naan with coriander was perfect. Delivery time was 40 minutes after the order, not bad for New Years Eve. On a serious note, the Red Onion is well worth a try. Highly recommended 5* 👍

My Fiancee ordered from them paying via link for delivery,, when the driver eventually turned up tried charging again stating not paid was sorted as phoned and complained.. a week later she ordered again because her daughters wanted there curry, so I ordered this time told be 65 mins, phoned to see where delivery was found out had done meat samosas even though asked for veg so they had to correct that told we would pay by Link.. when the delivery finally turned up tried charging again ! Plus same very rude delivery driver.. I won't recommend or let my Fiancee ever order from here again.. rather she walked round corner to Mantra. .only reason not use them eat in or takeaway only no delivery

What has happened to this place? Used to be a favourite of ours, friendly staff, awesome food. The last few handful of times we have been, it seems the kids (and I mean, children, perhaps not yet left school) seem to have been left running the place. The service was OK, but not amazing. Tonight however, we have literally just walked in, hoping for a sit in meal. No one, not even any staff in the place? Waited around 15 mins, no one turned up apart from another customer picking up a takeaway... Who even he was unsure if he was ever getting served. We tried shouting up, ringing the phone, nothing. We've ended up going to a different place down the road, super friendly staff and amazing food. Maybe we'll go here from now on.

Wrong order arrived after an hour of waiting and when I called to inform them they accused me of lying, the man then said the manager would call me, which he did and he said if I wanted what I ordered I would have to pay extra or if I didn't want to pay the extra to collect it myself. I would not agree to either as it was there fault. Terrible customer service! The food was not good either, I am wondering if they have a different chef on a Tuesday as when I have had food from there before it has been good but unfortunately not on this occasion.

Ordered a takeaway to be delivered within 55 minutes. When the time was up I called the restaurant but the phone was turned off. Called the mobile and went straight to voicemail. After 2.25 hours we gave up and ordered from elsewhere. Just as I was leaving to collect out food turned up. I told the driver it was expected ages ago and he shrugged his shoulders then told me the phone in the restaurant was turned off as they were too busy. Avoid!

The best Indian restaurant in the city, in my opinion. Always great food, I have ordered from them more than 10 times now and never was the food less than perfectly cooked, well priced as well. Happy customer indeed.

Just had chicken Madras/ tandoori mix grill etc , worst meal we've had for a long time my curry was a sauce with chicken in and had a familiar taste of out of some jar I've had at home, no onions etc that was not made on a stove. My meal and my wife's and daughters were cold also I have been having curries / takeaways since 70s I can honestly say worst I have had , sad because 12 months ago was good Never again

This is the second curry we have had from the Red onion the first was one of the best curries we've had. The second was definitely the worst we've tasted, it was cold and looked and tasted like dishwater. The chips and naan bread were stone cold. I dont know how 2 curries could differ so much, we couldn't eat them and they ended up in the bin. I don't think anyone in this day and age has money to waste which is basically what we have just done.

Ordered today for a home deliver at 19.15 given deliver time of 20.15. ( Happy with that ). No delivery rang restaurant no answer then driver rang at us 20.55 asking our address ??? No deliver rang restraunt no answer rang driver. No deliver for us asked wether we should collect phone went off rang back no answer. Tried to ring no answer. At 21 .55 driver rang asking for address again. Complete. Balls up won’t use again no customer service. No apology. Food was very hot so only made 5 min before received

Absolutely shocking waited over 80 mins for delivery when told 55 tops. Food arrived cold and curry that was suppossed to be spicy was sweet, watery and resembled a bolognaise sauce. Delivery driver was extremely rude when he arrived saying it was not his problem and we were to take the late delivery up with the establishment which would be well and good if they hadnt taken the phone off the hook. Never again will I order from here

Absolutely pathetic , if I could put Zero stars I would . Waited well over an hour and a half for our food to be delivered and couldn’t even get through to ring them and ask where the hell our food was . First and last time ordering food from such a terrible flipping place . What a joke .

Came along on a Sunday nite, and everything was fantastic. Food was tasty, served piping hot and plenty of it. Highly recommend the Hindi dish. Young waiter was really nice, did a brill service and very pleasant talking to us and making us feel very welcome. Will defo be going back soon.

Fuming, waited 50 minutes for a takeaway(which I don’t mind) for my curry to be aired, not even hot, missing chips and garlic keema , The guy over the phone just kept repeating wa I was saying back to him, and couldn’t even offer me a refund, so I’ll write a few refunds on a few different platforms for the sake of a poxy curry not been refunded, We eat curry a couple of times a week from Indian grill on Dividy road, we will stick to what we know from now on

Used this place a number of times before,but have to say our last meal was terrible. We would not normally moan,but the food was cold and the madras was Chicken tikka masala with extra chille’s . Sorry Red Onion but we won’t be ordering again.

Naan breads were massive and amazing. I had a veggie curry and it was really nice. Staff were very friendly, service was quick. Very happy.

The wait for your order was over 40 mins for us, then the food it's self was very bland, that's the second time for us now will not be going back there again
