The Rising Deer in Rotherham

i was there on the 23rd of January for an italian night, it was absolutely spot on, food was cooked as if i was eating it somewhere in Italy, owners and staff so polite and welcoming, prices very reasonable and loads of food going around, i definitely recommend this place if you fancy something different and freshly cooked, there is nothing like it in 30 mile radius 👍🥰

What a farce from start to finish. Family of 9 booked for Christmas lunch, at a cost of £90 each. Our booking was for 3pm, arrived on time to be told the table wasn't ready and maybe we should get a drink at the bar while we waited, that would have been nice if we could have actually been able to get to the bar! We were left standing in the middle of the pub, between tables while people were trying to enjoy their meals, not ideal! The young waitress was clearing our table, which looked like a bomb had gone off. Food and drink all over the table and also on the floor, we asked if we could have clean table cloths as the ones she left on were covered in the last family's drink spillages and gravy etc, this didn't go down too well as the waitress ripped them off in frustration and screwed them up into balls. We then waited for drinks which took a while, they arrived in stages, a wine here, a beer there..... to be fair the lady serving the drinks was run off her feet but tried her best (we believe she was the manager's wife (or chef's wife, he had numerous hats that he was wearing). After a long wait our starters started to arrive, well some of the starters as the chef had got our order wrong. We showed him our e-mail confirmed our orders, but he got quite angry with my sister-in-law more or less saying we were wrong. He went away and we can only presume he cooked the missing starters from scratch as they took about 30 mins to appear. We then had to ask for cutlery, the waitress looked close to tears and said she would have to go wash some. Starters finally eaten, no sign of the Christmas main courses. The lady serving the drinks kept bringing drinks which she said were FOC as we were waiting so long, thank you, much appreciated. Just after 5pm, we had lost the will to live and decided we were leaving (one of our party was an 80 year old diabetic and needed food). We got up to leave, coats on, and the waitress brought out ONE plate of food saying the rest would follow as and when they were ready.... not good enough, we wanted to eat together as a family, not one plate at a time "as and when". On our way out decided we would ask for our deposit back, the meal had been a total disaster. The chef/managed became once again quite aggressive, saying we were no longer welcome at his pub (did he really think we would want to return, a sledge of reindeers wouldn't drag us back). Luckily his wife stepped in and refunded the money back to our card, while he spat profanities out of his mouth, such a professional. One family said as we were leaving we had made the right decision as the food that did get served was not of a good standard. There orders were also incorrect. Ended up having pizza at home for our Christmas meal, not perfect but at least we were all together. Avoid this place at all costs, especially the chef/manager.

We went to the Rising Deer as a family of 8 for Christmas Day lunch at a price of £90 per head.! I really don't know where to start! We arrived only a few minutes before our booking but our table wasn't ready and we were asked to wait somewhere but this was very difficult as the place was very busy. I think we sat down at our table about 15 or 20 minutes later which was only partially set. The paper table cloth was very dirty with stains and ripped from the previous family, and after asking the very young waitress who had no customer service skills to change it she stomped off and returned to roughly rip it from the table. She then proceeded to only partially set the table with only half the amount of cutlery and the floor where a child had previously sat in the high chair was covered in food. To be fair to the young waitress she was obviously very stressed and busy due to lack of staff and amount of people booked into the restaurant. After a couple of wrong starters, which I had to prove to the rather aggressive chef/manager by showing him my confirmation email that my order was correct we then had to ask for the remainder of the cutlery. The only condiments were salt and pepper no cranberry sauce/mustard etc and a bread roll with our starter would have been appreciated! Then the wait for our main course began, at this point we could see that other customers were also becoming a little irate and the next table were also close to leaving just as their meal arrived. We had already had 2 rounds of drinks and then had a further 2 rounds which were complimentary due to our wait and were repeatedly told our main courses would be out soon. They eventually brought out my 80 year old mums meal as she is diabetic and told us that ours would be out as soon as they were plated up but by this point we were so fed up of waiting we decided to leave. We told the manageress that we were not paying and requested our deposit back which she eventually did. The manageress was very nice and apologetic which was a far cry from her husband, the chef/manager who was very argumentative, aggressive in his manner and insulting. We intend never ro return and good luck to those who are booked in for New Year!!

Christmas Day 2024. It was certainly memorable. From the moment we entered and were asked to stand by the kitchen door whilst our table was ready to the time we left after having to postpone our taxi by 90 minutes. We sat at a table with a pile of knives and forks in the middle and remnants of the previous occupants dinner scattered here and there. we waited one hour and 40 minutes for our starters to arrive. We had our starters which were very random in their appearance. Husband asked if we could have crackers like some other tables had and our welcome drinks which as yet hadn't arrived. waited another 45 minutes for our main course, I have to admit that what we did get on our plate of turkey dinner was nice, what we didn't get was another story. No stuffing, no cranberry sauce, no pigs in blankets. no sprouts on 3 of the plates, my 2 year old grandson had sausage which was dark brown on the outside and uncooked and still freezing cold in the middle, luckily this was noticed as an adult chopped it up. There were 2 girls waiting on and they looked absolutely frazzled, we later found out that one of them was the landlady. The landlord was doing the cooking as chef had left recently. One table walked out to go for pizza as they waited far longer than us. We did get the cost of our drinks knocked off the bill and one of the childrens meals. Shame because we have had lovely meals here in the past.

If I could give it 0 I would have. Wow what a sh*t storm. Burnt food, no product knowledge, ordered food and then told I couldn't have what I'd ordered a hour later because they didn't do it anymore. Over priced, what Shame it used to be great. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR FUEL Thurcroft chippy is mikes ahead of this place 🙏

Took my friend out for lunch very disappointed. Sausages burnt vegetables soggy gravy like water thrown together prawn cocktail very dry not enough sauce and bread stale , poor selection of beers and came cloudy. Expensive for a very poor standard won’t be returning.

We called into the the Rising Deer for their fish, chips and a pint offer at £12.95 sounds good, when we got there it was empty? and now we know why! we got frozen chips frozen fish which tasted anything like the Cod we ordered you know the fish I mean down on taste greyish tint to it.. yuk! all I can say is thank god we didn't pay the menu price of £16.95 what a rip off! we won't be going back 🫤

Many thanks to all at The Rising Deer for helping us celebrate Dad's 90th Birthday. Special thanks to Caroline who took the booking and dealt with the various queries re food allergies and dietary needs before and on the day. All 20 of us were very happy with our meals, especially those that had Cod and Chips, and Steak Pie and Chips. There was a slight issue when we found there was no Lemon Meringue Pie, which is my sister's favourite, however she was very happy with the Black Forest Gateau and said it was probably the best she's ever had. Absolutely terrible the food is not as it used to be, Sunday roast was not edible poor quality and not home made at all they still show the old food photos what you get now is nothing like it used to be. when advised staff it was poor they just weren't bothered and took the money. Avoid it such a shame, what was going to a nice family meal out was rubbish. Aunt bessie yorkshire pud Cheap stuffing ball that literally exploded when you cut into it. Frozen roast potatoes Instant mash that has had butter put in to try and disguse it Poor quality meet that was not sirlion in a million years watery tastless gravy The pics below the fitst one is what is advertised the 2nd one is what you get don't hink I have ever seen sirlion look like that...

Just had a fabulous meal, service very quick and a lovely environment. Food all come quickly and piping hot. The haddock and chips are to die for.

A beautiful pub and very friendly staff. Between us we had steak pie, code and chips and Sunday lunch. The portions were very large and the quality of the food is excellent. One of our party asked for a doggie bag as there was enough lamb for 3 grown men! We haven’t been here for a while and after booking we read some negative reviews. We needn’t have worried. It was perfect.

Been here many times before and never had a bad meal. I wish I could say the same about tonight but we were utterly disappointed. One of the meals that was ordered was the lamb rump with crushed herby potatoes, cauliflower puree, charred spring onions and a pepper jus. What arrived at the table was an over-cooked piece of lamb, oven chips and a poor excuse of a salad. It was sent back twice before we gave in and ordered fish and chips. Also, the maple-glazed bacon chop was a single piece of bacon without any glaze. Poor quality of food and nothing like we’ve had previously. We were told that the chef was ‘learning’. They only discounted 1 meal off the bill. This is not the place it use to be!

Been here a few times since it was renovated and the food has always been excellent. Staff and service are good but the food is now shocking. Ordered fish and chips but was later told they had ran out of curry sauce so I couldn’t have it? Ordered chicken supreme instead and it was a small, dry overcooked breast ( they had been sent the wrong meat apparently) , some frozen chips and the worst “salad” every (iceberg lettuce, cucumber, tomato). Asked for some ketchup as it was so dry and even that was cheap and nasty. Stopped after 2 bites and sent it back. Trying to charge £19 for that is outrageous. Will not be returning and judging by how empty it was on a Friday night it won’t be open long.

Birthday meal here and it didn't disappoint. We were a large table so we were in the conservatory area. Everyone's food came out together, all hot and delicious. We will definitely visit again.

Been here many times but not for a while. It’s obviously got new owners. Don’t expect the food quality to be the same. It’s quite poor for the money. I had fish and chips. The fish was half the size it used to be. It was soggy and quite fishy smelling. The chips were dry and the peas were not great either. Staff were friendly enough but kept asking if everything was ok which seemed odd. We won’t be going back. Shame

It’s been a few months since I was last here but standards haven’t kept the same, I absolutely feel that they have raised and raised significantly. The food , service and friendliness of all staff was just amazing. I definitely look forward to our next visit. Thank you for a truly wonderful evening.

We came here for a lovely Christmas lunch from work. The food was delicious and very beautifully presented. The service was efficient and with a smile. The only thing that dampened it for me was because of other customers. I hope the 2 older couples who were sat behind us feel a bit embarrassed about how they spoke to the serving staff. Questioning whether the chef had changed because they had heard the food had really gone down hill, complaining about how cold it was and how they should get central heating, insisting that they put more logs on the fire (which actually dampened the fire so it became colder!), repeatedly questioning things on the menu. All I can say is that the staff were saints to put up with the rude way that this group spoke to them, and it actually made me a bit uncomfortable. Other than other grumps, this is an excellent pub with such lovely décor, would fully recommend!

Everyone agreed that the food was excellent. Freshly prepared and to a high standard. I Highly recommend this restaurant.

Went for Sunday Lunch and food as good as ever. BUT service was terrible - very disorganised and obviously not enough waiting staff. Waited half an hour for finished plates to be removed then another half an hour for desserts to arrive. Dont expect fast food of course but pretty disappointed this visit.

My wife says this is now her favourite pub😹. Have called here a few times just for a drink but this time it was a family of 5 adults for an afternoon dinner. My daughter had booked a table. We were greeted with a friendly welcome. We ordered our drinks and they were served to us at the table. The drinks are well kept, we had Theakston Old Peculiar & Pale ale, Neck Oil & Moretti beers. Our food order didn’t take long. We had Steak pie, chips & peas, fish & chips (seemed popular with other diners) bacon chop, chips & peas and a ‘special board’ Soy salmon steak, sambol salad, sticky Jasmine rice & asian style mayonnaise. All the food was good, the service was great. We will certainly be going back again. Prices were what seems to be now normal pub prices, so quite acceptable.

We have just had an evening meal and we were not disappointed, the food was excellent and so well cooked I would recommend the Rising Deer to anyone.The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and so pleasant it just added to our enjoyment.

We have been to the rising deer today to celebrate my mums 60th birthday. We had reserved the conservatory and we have had the most perfect day! The food was absolutely top notch - good home cooking. Our group had Sunday dinners, fish and chips, pie and children’s meals and everything was excellent. The service was fabulous - the staff were friendly and attentive but also left us to enjoy our afternoon. They even provided a cake which was a really lovely touch. We will definitely be returning!! Well been there 5 times in about 5 months, but this will be the last. I understand some change in management, which seems to have been the problem, never ever the same. Portions slightly less, prices more expensive £14.95 Fish, Chips and Mushy Peas, up £2, but not has good. A bottle of average white wine £22 disgraceful, but what the ladies asked for, more expensive by the glass. Anyway a final bill of £100 for 4 of us, after we rounded up with a tip, should not have done i know. I had the fish and chips and a pint of lager, so no starters or puddings.

I don’t usually write reviews but fell that I must we are quite regular visitors to The Rising Deer just come back with friends from North Yorkshire who was really impressed Staff friendly Food excellent good wine & draught beer can’t ask for more See you all again soon

We visited yesterday for some brilliant food (the garlic mushrooms with gluten free bread was the star of the show!! Truly amazing!). We had the mushrooms, scotch egg, pie of the day and chicken with mash and green beans - all were lovely, home made and very tasty. Friendly, happy and welcoming staff. Good range of drinks/ food options and coeliac safe - knowledgeable about cross contamination and menu easily identifies food options. We had a great evening and will be back. Thank you!

The food was hot and clearly freshly cooked. The small haddock with chips and mushy peas was delightfully cooked to perfection. I had the smaller portion and it was adequate for me and in fact too large. One had the sea bass and really enjoyed the combination. The pie was hot and lovely. Staff were welcoming and helpful. Previously been here many times. It is now under new management with terrific new booking system which doesn’t involve a conversation with a human being. The text message I received from the system respectfully advised me I could have my table for 4 people for an hour and a half to have a meal ( possibly three courses) and drinks. I respectfully advised the system to stuff the booking where the sun don’t shine! Unbelievable customer relations- won’t be long before they’re shut down.

If your going to charge these prices you have to get it right, making sure the food is hot, warm is not good enough, roast potatoes you get one I had to ask for a steak knife to cut it but I couldn't but did get roast potato in its place, I am sorry but you get one roast potato you expect it to be edible. The mash potatoes must be measured using a desert spoon the veg would just feed a hamster. The beef was fatty cold and processed. The plates are sandwich plates but should be Dinner plates. The best bit was the bill time we had been charged for drinks the we hadn't had we had to have the bill changed twice. Someone said on a review that this place won't last. its a lovely clean place but improvements need to be made. You don't ask for your food to be checked at the table at these prices, you check it before it comes out. Won't be back until we see the reviews improve.

I went with my son (age 1.5), mum and two sisters. The restaurant itself it’s nicely decorated and welcoming. The tables are fine and the seating is comfortable enough. The menu is a little strange. There are plenty of starters, most around the £6 mark....

Delicious food, excellent customer service and lovely surroundings. We have been several times in the past but decided to try again as it’s under new management - definitely didn’t disappoint.
