Great views over Ross especially in the summer ☀️

We stayed here for two nights and had a really excellent experience. The room was perfect and both the breakfasts and dinner were also top class made all the more special by the wonderful service from Carol who attended to all our requirements with such a friendly cheery demeanour it would make you want to keep coming back.

The service was excellent, with the staff very polite and competent The food we ordered was well presented and prompt. The atmosphere is always good in this venue.

A lovely ambience as always something very warming and cosy about The Royal we visit quite often with our family for lunch or dinner! The food and drink are always great and great value for money the staff are always very helpful and friendly it’s our go to place in Ross which is our home town!

We stayed over Christmas 23 to 27, all the staff were extremely accommodating, it felt like home from home. A very big thank you to all the staff on Christmas day who went the extra mile to make it very special for us. A very big thank you to Cara, Carol, Sally and all the team. We had an excellent stay here after Christmas. Staff were fabulous and breakfast was amazing

Traditional coaching Inn, on a hill in the centre of Ross, overlooking the River Wye. Rooms are furnished in a traditional style and are clean and spacious. Breakfast is served in the restaurant and was very tasty and well presented, with a choice of continental, full English breakfast or a variety of other options available.

Thank you to Sally, Carol, Matt, Sarah and Giles and the other bar and restaurant staff. We have just returned from another excellent stay at the Royal and yet again we were blown away by the friendliness and efficiency of the staff. Even though we were in the middle of the Christmas party season we still enjoyed the atmosphere but what really hit the spot were the amazing breakfasts and the warm welcome we received for the 2 mornings we were there. Bedroom was great with really comfy bed and a great river view.

Only reviewing restaurant. Fantastic location. Very historic building & panoramic views. Dog friendly. Don’t feel crowded. Good service. Sunday roast was very average. I don’t think it would win any awards. Would I go out of my way to come back for it? -No. Would I go back if I was in the area, hungry & with a dog ? - Yes. Overall not bad. Recommend that you try it & judge for yourself. They might have fantastic other meals.

Excellent meal and service for Sunday lunch today, bright and spacious dining room. One member of the party was coeliac who was well catered for and everything was checked, even down to apologising for being unable to provide a biscuit with the pot of tea. Carol the waitress was very attentive, positive and helpful. She was also hilarious and clearly a kind person who just wanted us to have an enjoyable meal. Thanks carol.

We had a lovely meal, with a superb view in the garden. Will definitely be back for more. Staff were friendly and everywhere was busy on a Saturday afternoon. Lovely town to have a look around with so much going on.

We stayed at The Royal for four days this September with our grown up children. The hotel provides friendly and warm service and it was a good base to explore the area. I wanted to particularly mention the exceptional service we received from Carol during our breakfasts. She was a credit to the Company, positive cheerful and efficient. Carol was a massive hit with our dog Barnie - he sends you many slobbery kisses as a thank you for the sausages!!!

we visited a few weeks ago for lunch with my family, and had the roast. My twins have learning difficulties, and i just wanted to say a huge thankyou to all the staff as they were fantastic with Jack and Joe, so patient and friendly and the food was amazing! I just want to mention Carol i think her name was, short hair and very friendly. 😊

Just home from yet another great evening out at The Royal. The service is always excellent and tonight we were lucky to be looked after brilliantly by Sophie. Bank holiday weekend and the place was heaving, but our order was taken quickly and the food and drinks arrived almost “by return”. All of the food was spot on, my steak was cooked perfectly. The whole team work hard under a lot of pressure to keep their customers happy - it’s much appreciated, thank you.

This is a great hotel to stay in, I can fully recommend it if you are visiting Ross-on-Wye. The staff are friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean and well serviced. The food and drink choices are many and varied and the breakfasts are outstanding.

Called in for lunch,but decided not to stay, unfortunately there are too many dogs allowed into all areas,most places have a dedicated area that are dog free,used to be really nice , and music playing in the entrance was too loud.

We would highly recommend a stay here, we visited based on a recommendation from a colleague, definitely worth a visit. The staff are very accommodating and friendly and down to earth. We ate a few times at the restaurant and met some lovely people. The food was delicious, I'd recommend the see bass risotto, salmon (light bites), soup and the steak pie. You must have a breakfast too, you get to meet Carol, she is adorable. All of the staff though are so lovely and kind. Excellent facilities, the room was really lovely, the bed was sooooo comfortable! Room service was very considerate with supplies. Clean, comfortable and such vast countryside views from the river view rooms. We will definitely be returning there soon.

What an absolute gem! We only discovered you by chance, when coming to look at the tower, so I would recommend making this a selling point! We nearly stopped at one of the other many cafes/pubs on route! Service was fab, prices perfectly reasonable and the food was gorgeous! Every member of staff was so helpful and friendly! Thanks for having us!

I stayed there in May in a single room, anyway the room was like a double lovely and clean and fresh. Breakfast in the mornings were superb I enjoyed myself so much I've booked up again in July 5 star's

We had 3 absolutely lovely nights at the hotel with our dog. All the staff were more than helpful despite one particularly busy evening. We had one small issue which was dealt with quickly and professionally. The food was excellent, particularly the breakfast. Location was great for the town and I would definitely recommend a visit

Popped in here at 8:30pm upon arrival into Ross-on-Wye. Lovely place, great views, speedy service, friendly staff. My Wife's Ceasor salad was massive and chicken was tasty. My burger was a tad disappointing (small) but was still tasty

This hotel is wonderful. The double room was spacious and had glorious views across fields to the river and countryside. It was immaculately clean which I so much appreciated. It is right in Ross and yet so quiet and peaceful, I sat at my window and watched the swifts and listened to birdsong. I'm only sorry I could only stay one night. My son had a twin-bed room equally charming and clean and with these lovely open views. As for Carol..well, you will never meet a warmer, friendlier, efficient member of staff and her initial welcome after a long drive was the start of this special stay! She even offered to walk me to my room and to help with my bags. We had a superb evening meal in the spacious dining room surrounded by other people clearly enjoying the hospitality..maybe the Rowing Club?..the atmosphere was calm and cheerful. Very efficient young waitresses. The breakfast was excellent. Amazing choice and delicious poached eggs and salmon. And Carol worked that room as if she was dealing with family...so efficient, so kind, so very helpful. I will tell everyone about The Royal. I had the most special stay and want to thank you all.

Went for dinner last night. We waited 45 minutes for our starter then another 20 for our main course. Food was OK but nothing special. This on a Wed night! The two other places we tried beforehand were fully booked. I can see why.

10/10 guys. We called in a couple of other pubs in town hoping for a Sunday lunch. Nobody would take us without a booking. We found the Royal, and were greeted with a smile and a welcome. The staff were smart, efficient & friendly. The roast beef lunch (and the pint) were as good as you could get. Hospitality as it should be, well done.

We stayed for 2 nights with a family party of x8 and the booking included breakfast. Staff were really helpful and the hotel was clean with excellent room views overlooking the river Wye. However breakfast was fantastic with such a huge choice of cereal, continental and full cooked. Carole (lovely Welsh lady) looked after us every morning in the dinning room but what impressed me was how extremely kind and understanding she was towards our 89 & 90 yr old parents. She was patient with one who has dementia and just came across as warm, kind, extremely polite and very professional. The whole experience was very relaxed and made our trip. I’d stay again. Many thanks to all the team.

A very well run hotel. The rooms are spotlessly clean, the food is well prepared and presented; it is good quality Inn fare. Most importantly, the staff, from reception to waiting, both young and older, are friendly and clearly enjoy working there. They made our two night stay most enjoyable.

Stayed here 3 times over the past 2 years, once again we were well satisfied with the stay. Lovely room, Staff were once again friendly and helpful + food was excellent.

My wife and I enjoyed a very pleasant and comfortable stay. The views were amazing, the room large and clean (only criticism is that it was a bit of an outdated bathroom). Staff are super welcoming, friendly and helpful. Excellent breakfast and superb location. Only stayed one night but would highly recommend for a longer stay to use as a base for visiting the wider area too. Will return.

My wife and I booked a b&b with an evening meal beforehand. The room was very clean and spacious. Both meals were excellent and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Will definitely book here again.

We were staying locally and booked an evening meal in the restaurant. The menu selection was excellent and Adina (Edina?) was very helpful in offering the table we requested near the window and very knowledgeable about the gluten free options available. The service and rest of staff was excellent as was our meal

Great staff, very well managed, excellent location, fabulous views, good well priced food. Old furnishings but very clean and fully functional.

We stayed here for 2 days with a large family group. At one meal they delivered main courses at different times, by over half an hour. A pizza for a 5-yr-old took nearly 1 hr to arrive. When asking about something to clarify, we were abruptly told "we've told you before". At no point did they apologise to us for this service. Rooms were ok, aa bit dated. We could hear the other guests bathrooms - unpleasant.

I really enjoy the atmosphere, food and alcohol in this venue and I visit it reasonably frequently, but tonight I was very disappointed I came in for a bottle of wine and was met with a very sour faced barmaid who was argumentative, and called last orders at 2120 by very aggressively ringing a bell that almost deafened me, and turned the heads of everyone in the bar area, I think some retraining may be required as it caused us and at least one other customer I noticed to swiftly leave the premises. Very disappointed tonight, Unfortunate for such a usually lovely establishment.

Went for afternoon tea. Very generous portion of thick cream. Big fruity scones.

Great place to view the scenery, especially if the weathers good . The views are five stars, as were the staff on the day. Mushroom Soup was good, as was the Salmon and Pate, although too much butter and not enough Pate…but still nice. Scampi was poor as were the chips. Real chips would be better. Wine list is limited and nothing under £20 a bottle. So the food is “average”, as is the wine selection. It’s not the kitchens fault, Greenhalls have chosen low quality, high margin provisions in some cases I.e. the chips and the Scampi. Having said that, their “hero” dish, the steak pie, is good. Regarding the staff, ADINA was a star, very polite and naturally helpful. Indeed all the staff were polite, busy and helpful, clearing tables, fetching ice, very alert and nice. So food 2/3 stars, views and people 5 stars!

Arrived on a rainy day unfortunately but fabulous views over the river Wye and surrounding countryside. Only here for food & drink which was very good. Interior of the hotel looks very good but couldn't comment on the rooms.

We spend quite a few days and evenings of our life in the Royal as its a local hotel to us ,we love the atmosphere and the staff are all lovely and welcoming ,we sometimes take the dog who gets lots of attention from certsin staff,they have treats and water bowls available 😀 The food has always been good and in the summer it's lovely outside on the patio, enjoying watching the sunset go down

We had a lovely weekend here for Easter. The hotel location is superb, it’s in the town and walkable to everywhere and has beautiful views of the river Wye. The hotel is cosy and comfortable and kept very clean. We put a ssshh sign on our door and the housekeeping team left a bag of clean towels, toilet rolls and beverages refill out side the door which was really thoughtful. The most outstanding thing for us was the breakfast each morning- the menu is extensive and everything is freshly cooked with top class produce used, we would have had it for lunch and dinner as well if we could! The breakfast team, especially Sally and Carol were a pure delight every morning- they go above and beyond with every single guest and their cheeriness is contagious! We loved it here and have recommended it to friends and family.

We came to the Royal for a one night stay ! I cannot fault the staff..friendly, helpful ,amazing ! Our room was amazing no:40..Juliet balcony and amazing veiw..lovely and quiet and comfy bed. We dined in and the meal was good..usual Greene King fayre and as we stay at many Greene King we know what to expect..the breakfast never dissapoints..but deffo friendly welcoming staff ..well done all !

Just returned home from a 4 night stay at The Royal, what a lovely place to stay. We received such a warm and friendly welcome from the beginning to the end of our stay. Nothing was too much trouble, I am recovering from knee surgery and our room was on the top floor. When I explained we were moved to a more accessible room. Thank you for that it meant a lot. All the staff were very polite and friendly. The food was great and the whole trip was great value for money. The views are fab and you are right in the middle of town. Our room was lovely and clean and warm. ALL the staff are nice and friendly but Carol was an amazing so friendly and helpful and just so genuinely interested in everyone. Hope to return one day, thank you all for making our short break so enjoyable.

We stayed nearby for the weekend and went to the Royal for a drink while walking the dog. We then went back two days later for Sunday dinner and my son joined us as it was his birthday. This is also the first time we have visited with the dog and were a bit apprehensive how he would be. The staff were great as was the food. Free doggy treats were available and also reasonably priced doggy ice-cream. We will be back.

Usually The Royal doesn’t disappoint, although this time it wasn’t a good experience. The restaurant was empty, yet service was slow, felt like we had been forgotten about, what should’ve been an hour outing took almost 3. My starter was “salt and pepper Squid” which was unseasoned, overly greasy and didn’t even come with a lemon wedge to pour over it, the squid was tough, stringy and hadn’t been properly skinned, normally I love the squid from The Royal, this time not so much! Other than that, it was a decent meal for the four of us. Just a shame it wasn’t the usual quality. This is something I could understand during the rush but not 5:00.

Stopped for 2 nights in March, and the hotel was clean and really well situated. Breakfast was really good, Carol is 10/10 for service and made for a good morning after a drink the night before. Bacon is thick and eggs are poached perfectly! Good drink, good food, good rooms, good people, good views. Well done to all the team

Lovely, very ornate, Green King pub/hotel .. with fantastic view over the river . Large establishment ; mainly hotel areas, with restaurant & with bar area where dogs are very welcome ! Cosy with an open roaring fire … large outside terrace , again with views of the river . Very dog friendly inside .. with treats and water bowls and lots of love :) .

Ok so a mixed review. My friends came to visit for the weekend with their two children, and stayed in a b&b very close by. We had food both evenings. Service and greetings were great from all staff, however particularly Giles. His excellent service and interaction with the kids made Saturday such a lovely experience for them, so much so that when we returned on the Sunday for food they immediately asked if he was working. So why the 4 stars? Simply no roasts available at all on the Sunday (we were booked for 5pm), the food we got on the Sunday wasn't to the same standard as the Saturday, and a policy which doesn't allow the staff to be tipped for their excellent service. Bearing in mind the staff work in the SERVICE industry and exceeded expectations on that part I found it baffling and actually awkward at having a tip refused due to policy.

The hotel is slightly dated but the cleanliness, food and staff made up for that completely. We had a beautiful meal in the restaurant and our waitress, Carol, was just lovely, chatty and helpful.

Carol was amazing - great recommendation of the lamb, fell off the bone! Great place to watch the rugby too, Come on Ireland!

Lovely lunch today Welcoming station very well attended We were sat in the bar as per our request although Sara said the online booking request for this had not been received Seated we were told who we were going to be seen by for our order. Prompt service by Becky who ensured after service our food was satisfactory Lovely roast beef and salmon dish Slight delay in ordering of further drink due to new member of staff however once addressed Sara was very professional in explaining the reasoning behind the delay As always would return to this venue with its location and staff

Just returned from our second visit to the The Royal. It didn't dissapoint. Lovely room with a wonderful view of the River Wye. It's well worth booking a room with a view if you can. It's central position and car park make it a great base for exploring the area. Good choice of breakfast options, all beautifully cooked and presented. The dinner menu is more of a mixed bag with some meals being just OK whilst others are really good. Having said that the meals are reasonably priced and service excellent. The Royal is a lovely friendly hotel and the staff are what makes the stay. Even when you can see they are really busy they are all helpful and cheery, especially Carol who is a star. Wouldn't hesitate to return!

Had an amazing Valentines meal with my husband. Staff are always polite and helpful. Carol always really stands out, she is so bubbly and lovely, nothing is too much. Food was amazing as always and would highly recommend for everyone to come and eat, drink and stay here. They also have a great Gluten Free Menu. Dogs also welcome which is fantastic 🐾 We can’t wait to come back again soon. 😁

Came here for my 40th birthday, arrived just before 9pm but the amazing staff were brilliant in accommodating us for dinner & were so attentive & polite. Special mention to Carol who made our evening with her wonderfully energetic personality…….we were well & truly looked after. Room was fantastic, clean & very spacious, couldn’t ask for more. Will definitely be returning.

We stay at the Royal a couple of time a year and it's great in the winter in the bar with its log fire. The rooms are comfy and warm and the food is excellent, the staff are fantastic from reception to dining and bar, so friendly and helpful. Always a treat to stay here.
