The Royal Oak Riley Green in Chorley

Been here and the food is excellent. Had to move a booking today due to factors outside our control. Rang them four times over the course of the day, left multiple messages and nobody came back or answered. Sent emails with my booking reference. No answer. Superb place unless you need to amend a booking, then you can actually get hold of anyone.

Great food and the staff are very attentive and welcoming. However, the outside leaves a lot to be desired, which is such a shame. It just looks neglected and unloved.

This pub is always so lovely, gorgeous characteristic decor with a burning open fire and real cosy feel to it. We went for a family mean on 14th January and every course was amazing. Could not fault the food, it was the best we've had in a long time and most of us had 3 courses. Portions sizes were good and food was delicious. Staff were attaintive and friendly, providing a children's menu with colouring pencils. Would recommend the hallomi burger, chipolatas, garlic bread, steak and kidney pudding and sticky toffee pudding.

Truly abysmal. Low quality food in tiny portions for extortionate prices. The tenants running this place have absolutey zero customer service skills which, given they can’t afford to own the freehold, you’d think would be a prerequisite to running this type of business. The tenants stare blankly instead of responding to questions and are, quite frankly, strange and bizarre. Where does this odd sense of superiority come from? The clock is ticking and good riddance. They won’t be missed.

Absolutely shocking. I questioned the menu as none of the main courses seem to come with vegetables. The waitress couldnt help so the manager came to the table. A Sunday Roast £22 consisted of one vegetable (Sprouts)?? He confirmed that was correct but could "Russel up" some carrot & suede mash, I politely declined and chose another dish (which also came with only one carrot) a table of 8 then ordered 4 Sunday roasts on the next table which came with sprouts, carrots and parsnips (bare minimumin my opinion). When i re questioned the "Manager" he said that they must have changed the menu. Very poor and absolutely will not return, extortionately priced for dreadful and insulting service.

A great place to eat in a great location with great staff.

Went for a Christmas lunch and had the turkey. It was quite dry and it seemed the chef has been watching too many TV food programmes and thinks a small amount of food on a big plate and gravy spread thinly around is the template for success! It’s not. Chips ordered as a side and were awful. A lack of imagination of deserts meant we did not order - sick of seeing Sticky Toffee Pudding on every desert menu I see - come back Jam Roly Poly. Over priced for what we got. On the plus side the service from every member of staff we had contact with was without exception excellent.

Steak and ale pie with mash and one carrot. Very poor quality and extremely pricey.

Not overly enamoured by the quality of food for the price, had the duck & liver starter - 2 pieces of bread which wasn't enough. Then duck for main which was very dry and not very tasty. Other people had the Turkey which was a big slab of meat... Caesar salad was had by another member and it was some salad leaves with some chicken. Cheese and biscuits with slightly stale biscuits.

We have been coming to the Royal Oak for over 10 years, including supporting the take-away service during lockdown and we're astonished at just how much the standards have deteriorated. What was previously an impressive and well-prepared specials menu, resulted in receiving a Warburton's crumpet with some minuscule, low-quality shrimps on top for £10. Meanwhile, the garlic bread has significantly reduced in size. The caesar salad, which we've enjoyed countless times, consisted of a few pieces of lettuce, a couple of scraps of supermarket chicken (which we paid a supplementary charge for) and a few croutons. No parmesan, no dressing, nothing else. The chips which accompanied all main meals were frozen chips. The prosecco was completely flat. The calamari consisted of a grand total of six pieces. We truly hope that the restaurant improves to what we know it previously was. At the moment, there seems to be an alarming combination of increased prices - understandable in the current climate - but paired with reduced portions, and reduced quality.

This Restaurant is out of this world. Gourmet chef and lovely people. I’ve been a regular in this pub for the last 48 years, and it’s never been better than it is now.

Unfortunately we had three very unsatisfactory Sunday dinners here yesterday, the beef was raw.. gooey , bright red chewy and impossible to cut. Cost a lot too. We should have sent it back to the kitchen really 😔

Extremely overpriced cheap food. Beer extortionately overpriced. Pie meal had thick pastry and five chips on the plate. Tasted like frozen chips. Child's pizza looked like it came from Asda cheap range. Beer just under £7 a pint. First and last visit

Visited tonight 7 Oct as a party of 5. 2 of us chose the special menu pork platter which I anticipated to be substantial given the £22 price tag. What a disappointment- 2 mouth sizes of pork filet, half a sausage roll and a thin splattering of black pudding in the rosti. A massive rip-off, despite nice presentation and quite tasty. I explained my disappointment to the young waitress and asked the chef to be informed. No feedback or apology whatsoever from staff. We have had many family outings to the Royal Oak over many years and this has been a real let down. For balance, the 3 other diners enjoyed their meal. Welcome a management response

Proper well made pub food comforting and welcoming

Easy to find as just a short drive from Junction 3 of the M65. They offer a Lunch time special of a starter and a mains for £20 per person Monday to Thursday between 12 and 2.30pm. This is also available as an Early Bird Special between 5 and 6 pm. Good range of mains. If memory serves you have choice of around 14 or so dishes. Specials or steaks are not included in the deal. I went for the Salt and Pepper Squid, normally £7.50 as my starter. For my mains I went for the Chicken and Mushroom Pie. My fellow diner went for the Beef and Ale Pie. Both were £16.95. The 2 course option was £4.45 cheaper than if I had bought my starter and mains outside of the deal. A reasonable wine list but nothing under £23.00 that I could see so not the cheapest. And despite a description of the wine there was no mention of the ABV which I thought was a bit of an oversight. I enjoyed my starter but would have liked it to have had a bit more of a kick. Both pies were very good. Decent filling and like the rest of the food piping hot. Staff confirmed they were home made. Chips were good. Evenly cooked. Mine came with white cabbage, my fellow diner got red cabbage. The pies were served sitting on this. My cabbage was lovely. They must have melted some butter into it as it was so tasty. However, like with the chips I thought the portions were a bit on the small size. And both pies though very good had some herbs added for flavour which they didn’t really need. I wasn’t full so went for a dessert. I ordered the Chocolate Pot at £7.95. It was very rich and tasty. It came with some ice cream on the side which was delicious but was a really small portion. In fact I thought it was skimpy. Service was friendly and good natured despite an early mix up with my wine order. We were served by Skye who although busy with other customers popped over several times to check everything was alright, answered our queries and took on board our comments which she said she would relay back to the kitchen. So quality wise no complaints about the food. It’s way above average for pub grub. But it’s not the cheapest and, I have to say, the portions were a little small with regards to the chips, the cabbage and the ice cream. However, this would not put us off visiting again as it’s very easy to get to from the M65 and they do have a good choice of mains available on the meal deals.

Another great meal at The Royal Oak. Good food and excellent service. We were celebrating a family birthday, and the staff went out of their way to make it extra special .

We first visited The Royal Oak on our first date in 1964, we don't make it every year unfortunately but go when we can. I have just booked for Thursday 8th August for our 60th celebration. We hope to continue visiting for a few more years yet, it's a special place for us.

Food was a let down,, Very nice pub inside and service was good but our sunday roast was poor, hard overcooked potatoes, weird small pancake type of yorkshire pudding ,two small slices of beef, mine was gristley very disappointing and not good enough at nearly 20 pounds a head, won't be going back for a repeat do 'nt know how they can justify the cost of such a poor quality meal.

After a long walk called in for a drink - menu looked so good we decided to stay and eat . Unfortunately our table was reserved but staff were so polite in telling us and found us another table . Food was lovely and service / staff were great. Definitely worth staying for !! And definitely will go back

Excellent Sunday roast with great service.

My party of 4 enjoyed our Saturday lunch. Each of us tried a different main meal. Cheese & Onion Pie, Fish Pie, Steak & Kidney pudding and one off the special menu, Bream. Each of the meals was perfect and just enough to be able to squeeze in a lovely dessert too. Lemon panna cotta, banofee pie, sticky toffee pudding & the sundae. The only downside during lunch were the two files that thought they would join us for our meal. The staff were super lovely and very helpful. Maybe some citronella candles might help during the warm days. They didn't put us off the lovely afternoon, and we weren't hurried at all. Lovely homely place, plenty of parking. Thank you for a lovely lunch. ❤️

The price of a pint was astonishing during our visit—£12.60 for a pint of Campo and Moretti. How do you attract customers with such high prices? The venue is charming and has the ambiance of an old English pub, but the pricing needs to be more realistic. At times, it felt like we were in London. I would suggest negotiating with your supplier and considering the Wetherspoons pricing model.

We had a lovely meal here this evening. Highly recommend. The steak was cooked to perfection!

Pleasant country pub/restaurant

Always great food and well kept beers

En route home from a day out . Had not been here for a few years but as we were passing my wife and I decided to stop for our evening meal. We both decided for a main and I chose the Fish , Chips and Peas whilst my wife went for the Steak Pudding . As soon as my meal was put in front of me all I could smell was cooking oil . The batter on the fish was a very dark colour . As I cut into the fish the oil oozed out and soon covered the plate. I had already pushed the chips to one side . I knew at this point I should have raised the matter with the staff but me being me I put on extra salt and dipped into the tartare sauce plus mushy peas. The fish - haddock - just tasted of the oil that it was cooked in which was soaked into the batter. It should have been allowed to drain out before being plated up . My wife said the filling in the steak pudding was nice but it was not a suet pastry pudding , just flour and water casing . As regards the chips , just mediocre tasting by at least not dripping in oil.

A four for quality of food, your royal oak burger had grissel through it, maybe change your butcher for this product, if I may suggest try Frazer's butchers in Bolton for your burger meat, fish and chips excellent as was your lamb,

It's been several years since I last visited the pub. We met friends for lunch. A very pleasant atmosphere, a good selection of lager and draught beers. We each ordered a different main course. To be honest, I would have been very happy with any of them ! Looked good, tasted delicious. The decoration inside the pub was contemporary and tasteful. (Lovely wallpaper in the ladies' toilets, too !)

Great service from all the waitresses and excellent quality of food. Would definitely recommend.

Nice pub restaurant with friendly helpful staff. Catered for our large party (11) without deposits or preorder. Have a great evening with a good selection of food and drink including a decent wine selection. Staff were all friendly, warm and welcoming. Can find anything to fault for the price, good value for money.

What an excellent pub restaurant with some different dishes

A good friend and I went here(spontaneous choice as it always is when I pick him up) Service throughout was polite and attentive. Food was very good(garlic bread,squid,fish pie n chicken n ham pie)good enough size portions but very tasty and hot...80quid for two,(72 + tip) drinks and food. Would go again.

We have dined here on a number of occasions and we have noticed a decline in the quality of the food served. Had a Sunday roast and we were disappointed in the amount given. It sounded lovely on the menu. When we received the meal there were 2 pieces of thinly sliced beef ,1 floret of cauliflower with hardly any cheese sauce , dry roast potatoes, little serving of carrot and swede, 2 florets of broccoli, 1 average size Yorkshire pudding and not enough gravy ..£20!! Very dissatisfied. Doubt we will be going again.

First time we visited, was amazing. Second time I felt slightly robbed. Paid £17 for a chicken and ham pie. When it came it was definitely a chicken and ham pie from Booths with a few chips and some gravy. Considering I know the same pie is about £4.50 from Booths, hence the feeling of being robbed. For that price I would hope to have a homemade pie. Could've rusted up my own at home for a lot less. Everyone else enjoyed their meals.

Had the Paradise pale ale.real good . Food good. It’s a shame the left had side of the restaurant seems to lack atmosphere, also would be nice if they made the middle section more of a bar area with lower table. Still a pleasant meal, great staff

We only came in for a beer as we were local at the time but I can't fault the ale so clean and crisp very enjoyable

Called in 6pm on a Thursday had a starter that we shared ( brezola ) and 2 mains, service swift and staff pleasent, food very tasty, nice old style pub very clean . We didn't book just walked in but think it would be better to book weekend holidays. Etc

I’m not messing about here. This was seriously nice. Staff are really really nice and mega helpful. But that fish and chips I had today was phenomenal. The fish is exactly how I love it to be. If I was being picky about anything the chips could be better. Now they seemed like proper chips but they just seemed too dry. I don’t know why that was and I don’t really want to speculate. But it was like they was warmed up after being cooked. I could be wrong but I eat a lot of chips and something wasn’t doing those chips justice. This however will not stop me going back here for that fish or to try the other menu items. I’m still going 5 stars because I genuinely enjoyed my whole experience. Just a couple of notes about the place. It was very clean , very nice and traditional inside. Dogs seemed to be welcome at the bar area at least. And parking had 3 disabled parking spaces.

Always a lovely place to come, the staff are very accommodating and we love the food.

We received a warm welcome on our arrival and the food and service was immaculate. We travelled a fair distance but it was well worth it.our dog was welcomed too with a bowl of water. We will be returning.

This place is that perfect little pub, where the fires are roaring, staff are friendly and the are welcoming to all, even those with dogs. Food is always well presented and very tasty. While menu is a little small, this allows them to keep the standards high.

Went for a meal for Mother's Day, front of house were brilliant, the menu was outstanding, it was raining outside, inside was cosy and warm. Staff are very efficient, well worth the money.

Over priced for a really small portions,we had cheese and onion pie with some salad stuff on the top drenched in a horrible sauce, and had the chicken and ham pie which wasn't nice at all with the cabbage which wasn't nice either and the gravy was tasteless and see through, not be going here again

I attended with my wife and baby last Friday. The staff were attentive, the food was delicious and the Sancerre was outstanding. Reasonably priced and worth every penny. You get what you pay for in life and it's certainly reflected at the Royal Oak

Very expensive and small portions, ran out of a lot of food and it was only 5pm, over £6 for a 4% pint of ale and £5 for soft drink extortionate, sadly will not be returning

Went very early so it was quiet, but absolutely brilliant meal and service

Gad a really good lunchtime at the Royal Oak after a walk around Hoghton Tower and Hoghton Gorge. Decent choice on the menu and the 4 meals arrived in good time, piping hot and freshly cooked. Washed our meals down with a pint of local ale and we heartily recommend this hostelry at Riley Green! One we will return to very soon!

Had two courses for lunch here. Best pub food I have had in a while. The mushroom soup and the Steak Pudding especially good. Service was very friendly and lovely way to finish a walk around Hoghton Bottoms. Definitely would come again!

Cosy place open fires and a lovely atmosphere. My wife and I had a lovely meal. Both of us had sea bass for the main meal it was really nice and the skin was lovely and crisp mash was smooth and the mussel veloutie very tasty. Staff were good and the service was also very good all in all a very good new year afternoon meal. We had a good time.

I booked a couple of weeks in advance over the phone the table infront of the log burner next to the window. My husband to be in 3 months rang a couple of weeks prior to request this table and emailed as well. Explained that 1 have been a loyal customer since aged 4 been there . Christmas and family Birthdays had that table for over 30 years. To add insult to injury the people sat there hadn't booked that table had never been there before and I heard them say they wouldn't come back again. I wanted that table as sat their yerar in year out Birthdays Christmas with my parents who have now died. So disappointed feel so let down To the point I don't want to come to you ever again

Perfect and relaxing few hours for our family outing. It has a cosy, charming, homely feel in a countryside location. Front of house was welcoming Service was excellent We all chose comforting dishes eg Pies and Steak Pudding which we al loved and would recommend. High quality food served with style Everything is special Well done We will be back soon

Not been here for some time. Food choices are okay but not quite like it was some time ago. Middle of the road now pies and burgers but good quality. A place to eat but not both as a recent meet up with friends brought to an early end as staff were hovering in expectations of our exit.

Steak and kidney puddings are excellent, just like my mums. Staff polite and efficient. My friends had roast dinner which was enjoyed. Custard on the menu would be good as it goes with sticky toffee pud.

Very nice and cosy traditional English pub restaurant nestled in the country panes of Lancashire. Warm, clean, friendly attentive staff and a log burner completed the homely atmosphere. Don't come here looking for a cheap eat, and remember quality is always worth paying for. We skipped starters and ordered 2 burgers which came with fries, but disappointingly no side salad or coleslaw. Nice juicy burgers, of decent quality, done right. Served nice and hot. The fries were crisp and didn't taste like a cheap catering grade option. Skipped desert as we were in a rush but this is a decent establishment if you are looking for above average pub meals. Menu has some nice alternatives and wasn't just the usual line up (despite our unoriginal order). Have been before, would go again.

We were so disappointed with our lunch Cheese Onion Pie a bit of salad the thinest chips. £15 so not worth the money such a small portion. Alot of money for little portion. Choice of sweets not good & wow! The price £7 for a sweet. Wont be rushing bk. Used to be a good meal. Back to the Arches we go for Value for money & loads of food
