The Salt Room Restaurant in Brighton and Hove

A wonderful place on the Brighton map! The seafood was delicious - fresh and perfectly prepared. The location is perfect and the service is at the highest level - polite and professional. An additional advantage was the great wine list, which perfectly complemented our meal. It was a great day and we will definitely come back!

We had the most amazing time, food and wine selection was perfection. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the pairings of the wine to the food. Would definitely recommend.

The service was very friendly and efficient and the food was good although not outstanding. However we though £167 for two starters, mains, no desserts, 2 glasses of prosecco and a bottle of wine was excessive. £15 for two very small scallops was disappointing. For that price I dont think it's exceptional enough to lure us back again.

We had a delicious lunch. Started with fresh oysters, then had a large sharing dish with sides, followed by a series of small puddings. The only part that wasn’t perfect was the ‘dessert cocktail’ which amounted to a regular cocktail with some cream on the top. Which made it not a pleasant cocktail but didn’t make it a desert, so didn’t live up to either part of its name. We went on a weekend afternoon and it was quite empty.

Great for Seafood meal They do offer vegan, and meat dishes, if your not too keen on Seafood.

The food was nice and service friendly but £15 for two minuscule scallops seemed a bit much. For these prices we were underwhelmed. £167 for two glasses of Prosecco, two starters, two mains and a bottle of muscadet. I don’t think we will return.

First visited The Salt Room soon after it opened in 2015 and over the last 10 years the quality of food has remained excellent. Whenever I return to the UK I try to eat here because the food is so good.

Great setting overlooking the seafront but only if you are at one of the few tables on the elevated section. All other tables are below window level. Staff were mostly friendly and attentive. Food was mostly good apart from tasteless mussels and very over salted calamari and fries. We pointed this out to the waiter but he chose to make a joke of it by pointing out the fact we were at the 'salt' room! Expensive and overall not good value for money.

For a start, you need to train your staff on how to be polite and helpful to customers, and to also take their complaints seriously instead of just making jokes as a response. We had to ask for drinks multiple times, the only check-back that we received was for the starters, no one asked if any of our party had any allergies which is now a basic legal requirement which even your average greasy-spoon cafe can manage to follow, no apology was received when the apalling quality of some of the mains was brought to light, and the staff were generally dismissive. Whilst the starters were pleasant enough (nothing amazing, but tasty enough), some of the mains were absolutely terrible. The cod was dry and flavourless, as was the bed of kale upon which it sat. The shellfish platter was barely palatable. There was only 2 of each item, so by the time my partner and I had given each a chance, the food was nearly gone. The scallops were cooked perfectly, but tasted completely bland. The two types of prawn were both unfresh, flavourless, and not properly cleaned (when another member of our party asked if they were fresh, the waiter simply responded with a confused "oui"). The crispy squid wasn't terrible, but was extremely salty and I've tasted better in almost all other establishments I have ordered it from. The muscles which are included in the platter (at £40pp) were the worst we have ever tasted! They sat in a shallow puddle of flavourless broth with a few sprigs of thyme and little else just dashed in the pot with them, to the point that I could only stomach 3 of them. Even the fries were extremely salty, and when complaints were made, the waiter simply joked and said "well that's why it's called the salt room" (lucky for him, I was in the toilet at the time when this was said). Overall, this restaurant is an absolute joke! For such prices, you expect top quality food and service, but this establishment is nothing but a pretty shell with nothing pleasant inside. I am extremely disappointed as there seems to be so many great reviews and I had travelled all the way down from Chester (a 4.5hr journey) to celebrate both my Birthday and my cousin's engagement with my family who all live fairly local to Brighton and I rarely get to see, only to be ripped off by one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to! Had it not been for the storm on the sea front with torrential wind and rain, and the fact that it was NYD meaning anywhere else would have been fully booked, we would have cut our meal short and gone elsewhere. Overall, this restaurant has both figuratively and literally left a bitter taste in my mouth...

I had a wonderful experience at the Salt Rooms. We were helped with the menu when we asked. The staff were attentive, but also left you alone. The food was out of this world good. The oysters were so fresh and I have a mix of the two types, my dad had the mussels. They filleted our fish at the table. My dad is disabled and there is a disabled toilet and it is possible to have a table with no steps. I would recommend this restaurant wholeheartedly - it is a wonderful and special experience.

My brother and I booked our Christmas lunch, we arrived a bit early so ordered a cocktail at the bar, which was great to see them so professionally made and included good banter with the staff. Our Christmas lunch was exceptional and we were looked after perfectly by Gabor - we had a memorable meal for all the right reasons

I've eaten here twice, both times on Christmas eve and both the food and the service were excellent. All the seafood was very fresh and well cooked and the service really was top notch. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. Sadly, I did not get our server's name or I'd mention him personally in the review, the service was that good

Christmas meal - salt room brighton. We decided to have our Xmas meal in a hotel this year - 2024. While the food was good - overall the experience was disappointing. Very little effort was made to create a Christmas atmosphere- staff were pleasant and helpful but it could have been any day of the week. My husband is lactose intolerant and we advised of this a few weeks in advance but this information did not seem to have got through. It really is not that difficult to find lactose free brandy cream these days. The meal was £135 nor including any wine -so not cheap. The oysters at the start were good and the food was as one would expect was well presented. However with the Christmas meal there were no sauces and insufficient gravey. Also hardly any green vegetables- which was disappointing. Everything was served on the plate so you got what you got. I don’t normally eat meat but did make an exception for Xmas day. The turkey was nothing special. In fact a bit dry none of the none white meat. A bit like i remember rather sad Xmas dinners from school. Deserts and cheese were ok but again nothing special. The biscuits I could have bought at Aldi anytime of the year. We decided to have a good time and did - but this was despite the hotel. If you are going to do Christmas- do Christmas -Christmas music , staff dressed in some form of Christmas gear and don’t be so mean with the food. Where was the cranberry sauce, selection of vegetables etc. mini mince pies were not really great and brandy butter was not brandy butter that I recognise. Thank you to our server - he did his best and wax charming - but not much he could do given the set up. Won’t be booking another special event meal at salt room that’s for sure.

Had Dinner for two at The Salt Room on Wednesday evening last week. The food was excellent and there was a lovely atmosphere. The restaurant was busy for a mid-week night, but never felt crowded. The portions were generous and really high quality, however what made the evening was the truly exceptional level of service. Attentive, but never intrusive. As with another reviewer the meal was to celebrate my partner’s birthday and so a chocolate truffle with chocolate piped Birthday message was delivered (unrequested) at the end of the meal. I would absolutely recommend the Salt Room.

This is my go-to restaurant in Brighton. It ticks the boxes, fine food especially the extensive offer of superbly cooked fish, excellent service 5 stars and great location. Staff always superb. I always arrive early to enjoy a cocktail in their bar.

We went to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. Service was good. Very expensive. Would only go for a special occasion & you have to enjoy seafood. Not a posh restaurant.

Our experience at The salt room was amazing from start to finish, we couldn’t fault it , from the mixologist at the start of the evening who engaged with us whilst preparing our cocktails to the staff who were friendly and attentive throughout the whole service and the food was simply delicious , wonderful !

We were served by Antoine, who was very helpful, informative and took great care over our service. He recommended some Brill which turned out to be brilliant (their joke 😃), and a fish neither of us had tried before. It was delicious. The scallops I had for my starter were absolutely the best I had ever tasted. They served me English Chardonnay from Kent. Another treat. We were too full for dessert, but they brought out a truffle on a plate that had piped "Happy Birthday", as my friend had mentioned it was, indeed, my birthday. (I'd eaten the truffle before I thought to take the photo.) Thoroughly recommend. They restored my faith in restaurants again.

A great evening out and highly recommended. The service was excellent, especially Mattheus from Albania you was an outstanding host, wine advisor and waiter. The food was brilliant, we loved the Epanadas, the sauce they came with also was lovely with your super sourdough, as was the whipped butter with herbs. The seafood grill sublime, the scallops and the mussels particularly and the garlic mayonnaise perfect.

To me and my wife ths resturant does not live up to all the good reviews. The food was very ordinary and exstremly over priced i.e. Sea Bass for two people £100. We had heard so many good things about The Salt Room and was expecting great things,however very dissapointed. I usally only write a review on a second visit to a resturant but in ths case we are not returning.

An amazing place! Went there just for a lunch today but we left with emotions like we had a special occasion. Very tasty food and a very nice service. The gentleman serving us, Antoine, was extremely kind, he saw that I am pregnant and without me mentioning that I need the food well cooked he said he would notify the kitchen. Ordering for desert a truffle I got it presented like on the picture… A place where each visitor will receive a special approach. Definitely will visit again when we go Brighton.

We had a fantastic birthday meal with our daughter. The food was excellent and the service was outstanding. Certainly not the cheapest place to eat but it was a great meal. The only issue was the noise - my husband is hard of hearing and the acoustics are not good, especially when it’s full of noisy, chatty people enjoying their food!

Incredible evening, we loved it. We had an early reservation for a Saturday, 5pm. Arrived when it was quieter and were able to enjoy leisurely cocktails in the bar before going through to sit down. Very knowledgeable staff, taking care to describe the menu and ingredient/allergens. Plenty of options for gluten free. Delicious food with decent portions but not so big that we couldn't manage 3 courses! Our table was required back for evening service so we couldn't linger beyond 730 at which point the restaurant was very busy and had a great atmosphere. Really great experience and would definitely go back. Nice decor and great location across the road from the beach.

The food was amazing and the staf were so kind, will definitely come again and Tty other things, but the shrimps and mussels were spot on. Tbh everything we ordered, which we ordered everything was great .

I recently dined at this restaurant and had a wonderful experience, thanks largely to our server, Antoine. His service was exceptional—attentive, friendly, and genuinely invested in making our visit special. He ensured we were well taken care of, making great recommendations and checking in at just the right moments. The food was also outstanding (lunch time set menu), perfectly prepared and full of flavour…including their margaritas! Antoine and the quality of the dishes made the entire experience memorable. Highly recommended!

The food was mediocre and over priced, service was slow and impersonal. Extremely disappointing.

We went there under a reservation and ordered the early evening set menu, 3 courses for 29£ with a glass of Champagne. It sounded like a good deal. I ordered a fish soup that was very tasty. However, the bowl was ridiculously small and the slice of bread accompanying it was as thin as a paper sheet. I was very surprised as I would have thought that in a fancy seafood restaurant a fish soup would be a fairly cheap dish to prepare. As a main course, we all ordered "moules and frites". The mussels were very fresh and big, but normally they would serve them on a creamy, garlicky sauce. However, they barely had any sauce and this was a kind of salty water at the bottom of the bowl. I didn't enjoy them, unfortunately. The service was pretty good but quite slow considering there was barely any table occupied due to being early evening. In general, I was quite disappointed as I had been looking forward to this dinner for a long time.

The worse service, waited for one and half hours for the food. Very slow!!!! Aside from that whilst waiting no waiter talked to us till we’ve started asking. Came in at 7:30 pm, food came at 9pm when we’re really hungry. They are only asking how we are when they saw us already unhappy. They serve the other tables before us. Didn’t even apologise with delay!

Wow what a special lunch at The Salt Room. My bream with beetroot side was absolutely delicious. My husband loved his Ribeye steak with fries and gave it 10/10. I chose the Autumn sweets selection for dessert.. well I can honestly say I can’t remember having a more wonderful dessert in my whole life. 5 tiny but exquisite creations ! My husband loved his generous cheese board too. Lovely service . Highly recommended.

An amazing experience from start to finish. We were made to feel so welcome. Our waiter Jon was brilliant and so friendly, made sure we were happy without intruding on our night. The food was outstanding and cocktails to die for. A special birthday plate for my partner was a lovely touch.

Wow. We came as a group of 11 (with a reservation). The service was some of the best I’ve experienced, I had three gorgeous off-menu cocktails, and we shared the most amazing seafood, starters, and chocolate desserts. Thank you also for a lovely birthday dessert!

We visited this restaurant on Monday, and it was hands down the highlight meal of my trip to Brighton! The food was exceptional (love the mussels and the ribeye steak), and the atmosphere was so soothing. We were lucky to have Antoine as our server—a genuinely humorous and passionate individual who made the experience even better. Food was outstanding. Great service from Antoine. I didn't want chillies in my mussels, so made them without. Tried a ginger Margrhtia, which packed a punch as it slid down.

Excellent food with excellent service!

Good service and lovely restaurant but quite disappointing food. The halibut fillet is not a fillet at all - a halibut steak would have bones but a ‘fillet’ should not have bones through it, and the “roasted cauliflower” is non-existent and apparently is a puree, and when questioned we were told it’s a mistake in how the menu is written……….not really good enough. Previous visits have been great and I praised this place highly but after the recent visit I am afraid the competition is too good to accept anything below standard and a re-visit is unlikely.

I forgot to take a photo of my main but everything was so lovely. The starter was the crab, main was skate fish and the dessert the Rum Baba. Everything was delicious and the service from Antoine was excellent. Thank you for a great experience.

Charged me £40 for cancelling 55 mins beforehand for 2 people. This is theft in my opinion. There is no other restaurant that does this. They didn't even ask me why I couldn't make it!!! Utterly appalling

Due to the good reviews, I made a reservation here for my husband's birthday on the occasion of our trip to England. We were also welcomed very friendly. We were seated at a small table for two with a view of the wall instead of outside. But I didn't want to cause any trouble, so I accepted it. Starter was ok. For the main course, I chose the freshly caught whole fish. As promised, it was filleted. Unfortunately, this took a while, so it was only just lukewarm and was even cold after the first bite. Side dishes were good. However, the service now took a very long time. Sure, the restaurant was well filled and there was a large table. But how often do they pass our table empty-handed? We sat there with empty plates for about 25 minutes. So we lost the desire to order desserts. After a while, a waiter passed by and placed a plate in front of my husband with Happy Birthday on it and a small chocolate, but it was so careless. So all in all: high prices but low performance, what a bitter disappointment! We ate much better during the 14-day tour of southern England, had more beautifully presented food and much better service and paid even less for it.
