What a great pub to visit. They brew their own beer but have a hood selection of other beers on too. The man behind the bar was welcoming and very helpful. Glad we came by.

We visited the “Sally” on a Monday evening for the infamous “left over Pie lottery”. Arriving at just before 5.30pm, the pies had been hoovered up largely by opportunists who don’t frequent the establishment on a regular basis. But…. We were in luck!! Placing an order for two pies, chips and peas! The beer was in excellent order as usual, so we were set. Mine host, the ever so friendly landlord, who really cannot do enough for his customers, was in fine fettle also. Adopting the position of front of house, we were shown to our window seat, in front of the roaring fire. We asked if we could have a slight delay on the food delivery, which was granted with no fuss whatsoever. Then, just to make us feel even more welcome, we were presented with a candle for the table. Food was glorious, and the Free Gratis locally produced organic pudding was out of this world! An absolute must for a visit. Award winning beer, and cider, infamous locally produced Ham, or Cheese & Onion rolls, and a landlord who goes the extra mile to ensure you leave with a smile, and a vow to return. An absolute must visit!!

Although not currently doing food, in all other respects this is a wonderful pub. The beer from the attached brewery to the guest ales along with the welcoming atmosphere make this pub right up with the best. We stayed in nearby Berkeley so we could walk to the Salutation and enjoy the superb ales without the worry of driving. So make this a must to visit, just remember for the moment to eat first or later.

Feeling hungry me and my dog decided to stop at the Salutation which looked like a friendly country pub. As I walked up the path I could hear a group of elderly gentlemen complaining about the number of 'foreign' people presenting the news. I asked a surly Victor mildew type if dogs were allowed in. ' why don't you bloody go in and find out' was the friendly answer. Not the fault of the pub but there was a general hostile attitude- much the same as in an old western stand off! There was only one vegetarian option and I wished I had read the menu! I went outside to the garden with my coke which was flat. Ten minutes later my meal came out. A very odd mixture of oven cooked carrots, pickled carrots and cucumbers in a salad dressing under the carrots . I ate a little but it looked and tasted revolting. I left most of it and left - which is a first for me! I had wondered if this was a joke for vegetarians as this is hunting country. However I was surprised most by the hostile reception just like in a Western movie.

Always great beer but had a ploughman’s lunch today which consisted of 3 slices of bread, 3 slices of cheese, an onion and some chutney. That’s not a ploughman’s, that’s a cheese sandwich, which for £8 was a bit cheeky I thought. A slice of ham was an extra quid and it was pretty small for that. You can do better than this Sally!

We popped into the Sally for a lunchtime Pasty, but decided to have the stew instead. Beef and ale, packed with vegetables and hearty dumplings - delicious. The beer selection was great and we opted for Tiley's Ordinary Bitter and Belgian Pale. Both were top quality. The lady who served us was friendly, knowledgable and attentive, offering advice and information on all the ales on offer. An absolute treasure of a pub. We truly felt like 'locals'. And not wanting to miss out, we took a Pasty home, and it was as good as we'd heard.

Me & 4 chums popped in this Sat. to try the Sally, which has a good reputation that stretches readily as far as Bristol. We arrived early - just after midday and had the place more or less to ourselves. A few regulars turned up while we were there, all of whom seemed to bring spaniels, puppies or horses. We felt we must stand out a bit as we came without any animals at all... Beer was fab. I, the driver, enjoyed the 2% bitter from the family brew house, Tiley's. Other less abstemious chums tried and enjoyed more adventurous beers, inc. Moor's splendid & straightforward stout. We ate a good lunch, trying the signature ham, egg & chips, as well as the pork burger. Chips were top - simple, well-fried chipped potatoes. No weirdy triple-fried artform efforts, arriving in miniature chip baskets, just good pot.s cut up, cooked and served on a plate! Bravo! Burger was high quality meat, nicely cooked, topped with strong-tasting Cheddar & pickles, with a good side-salad and the previously mentioned chips. I detected the clean taste of good ingredients, freshly prepared. That's a Bingo!! Chum had the plum crumble which looked good, too. I think it's a great idea to offer just a few tried & tested plates, so the cook can deliver consistant good food, which is what seems to be happening here! What a nice place! It's got that well-worn, unpretentious old-fashioned look that distinguishes the real from the ersatz, these days. Staff were chatty, cheerful & effective and a good time was had by all. Good prices, considering the quality of all the offereings. I suspect the place can get much busier than the day we were there - we went just on the cusp of the Xmas holiday lull - you know - the last Sat. before everyone goes back to work, when nearly everybody has had about enough of food, drink & socialising. I imagine it gets much busier on 'normal' week-ends. This is the opposite of the poncy over-priced places that have disinterested staff, menus a hundred items long, get none of them right, sell you cold pints of flavourless industrial brews and can't wait to see the back of you, so they can get someone else in. Difference is, I expect we'll be back!

I have been to the Sally several times and always found it good, but today, very, very disappointed. We were a party of 9, I phoned the pub yesterday to let them know we would be arriving. We got to pub early in order to have the tables at the front of the pub. Alarm bells should have rang when a member of staff said did you ring yesterday telling us you were coming, Yes, I replied, in that case go out the back near the skittle alley. So we did. Then one member of the group who is vegetarian asked for a omelette & chips instead of Ham, EGG & chips. No you can't have that was the answer, so okay, the person had eggs & chip, but asked for bread & butter to go with it, but again the answer was we don't do that. We was then amazed as two of the party had plenty of bread with their ploughman's lunch. The people who had the ploughman's were disappointed, only one pickled onion and the person who had ham, had one small slice. I must say the Ham, Egg & chips were nice, Sunday lunch on the small side. Beer was very good, but after todays experience we will not be going back. In my opinion only, this pub is nowhere near as good as it was in the past. The service was really poor, but the staff can only do what they are told, so the management must take responsibility for this. As I said the Ham, Egg & Chips was good as was the beer, but the service was abysmal hence only 2 star rating

We're fans of the Sally - friendly staff and just what you want a local pub to be like. The beer is good, and the food is good too - with one exception: the veg. Overjoyed to see that the Salutation Inn was again opening at lunch-times during the week, even though only for pasties, we arrived at 1pm looking forward to 'Pastie and a Pint' as advertised being served between 12 and 2.30 pm. No pasties, no rolls, no nothing basically....... It can't be that difficult, can it ?, to provide enough pasties for a 2 1/2 hour lunch slot. We were told that there was no food available, sorry, it all went in the first half hour. PLEASE take the sign down if you can't provide the service you advertise. To make matters worse we were reminded that we had to leave before 2.30 as they then close. There has to be a better way of sorting the food out in this Pub, delightful though it is.

What a disappointment! The area we sat in it was infested with flies. They were on the windows, walls, tables and worst of all landing on our food. We spent most of the time trying to wave them away which rather detracted from any enjoyment we may have had from our meals. We speculated what the conditions might be like in the kitchens where the food is prepared. We had intended to have a dessert and coffee. In the event we left and went to The Salmon at nearby Wanswell. The sweets and coffee were excellent & thankfully the premises were fly free!

We visited this fantastic pub on New Years Day (after an absence of 3 years). Again (as with the first time), you're warmly welcomed as you walk through the door. Surprisingly the landlord (after 3 years) still remembered us. With questions… You're the cyclists? You're from the Forest? (I think he probably remembered my Rochdale ascent than anything else). We found a seat and shared a table with a couple who it turned out had been to one of our parties (friend of a friend). Again, food of the best quality. The best Ham, Egg and Chips you'll find around! All food locally sourced. You won't get a coffee here! Why should you? It's a pub!!! The skittle alley was being played on at full force and looked like a lot of fun. Wish I could have gone along on New Years Eve for 'Bring your own Vinyl' Night. I had been looking forward to visiting this pub as it was a 2014 winner of the much coveted CAMRA pub of the year .We went on a Monday15/05/2017 in the evening it was very quiet with about half a dozen people in .My husband ordered his ale the Tileys special pale ale ,as I do not drink as I was driving I asked for a half of a half pint glass of water.Yes a whole quarter of a pint ,he paid for his beer and was charged £4.20 he thought it quite expensive ,but on challenging the young bar man he was told we charge a 70 pence for water . Thats a nice little earner £2.80 a pint! Our local is the Swan at Little Totham and they have won the CAMRA award POTY twice and do not charge the driver for soft drinks let alone water .So if you are the driver and do not drink I would suggest bring your own water ,or you will go away angry. Before the licensee comes up with the old chestnut ,have to wash the glass ,barman's time etc. it does not excuse such profiteering.

My second son, who is now in his fifties, has been singing the praises of this Pub and its wondrous Ham, Egg and Chips for some time. Well, at last, we visited the 'Sally' at Ham, near Berkeley last week. The Ham was thick and generous, the egg perfect and the chips out of this world. It's very hard to cook the perfect chip and after three quarters of a century I still fail miserably. The Sally doesn't. The wood burning stove and the small bars produced a warm and welcoming ambiance. I have long avoided Gastro Pubs where the food seems to be more important than the drink. This pub has got it absolutely right. It's a Pub that also serves food. But what food, the nearest thing to food heaven that ham, egg and chips can be! Like all good pubs they also seem to welcome dogs. I have fond childhood memories of Berkeley, my favourite uncle lived there, and this pub is a great addition to the marvellous Lardy Cakes they used make at the village bakers in the immediate post-war years. Perhaps they still do. But nothing can beat those wonderful chips...

Found almost by accident, caught a hand drawn sight when driving along the A 38 I was very pleasantly surprised to find this gem with many real ales some brewed by the Inn keepers. For real ale and cider drinkers , and indeed those who like a traditional Inn this is a must. I spent a couple of hours chatting to locals and purchasing some locally produce, Gloucestershire Old Spot bacon.

Excellent beer pub but be aware no food served in the evening. Features in camra 2016 and we'll deserved.

This is an update to a prior review. Still a great pub where simplicity creates near perfection ... BUT ... they need to be conscious that SMELLY DOGS in the bars, particularly where food is served, is not to everyone's liking. It is not illegal to have dogs in food service areas so it is the RESTURANT OWNERS CHOICE. Whereas their choices are generally excellent, on this one they have it wrong, insist on the dogs being left outside, please!. On a bad day you may get a local clique (including smelly dogs) sprawling and "owning" the limited space ... but that is the price of fame. Perhaps a DOFIDIB campaign may focus the mind. (DONT ORDER FOOD IF DOGS IN BAR) ... but holding nose not breath!!

They don't usually do food, so we went for drink to try out their real ales. We weren't disappointed! The pub is friendly and popular. It's just a pity that they didn't do food the evening we went.

The pub did not have enough diet coke for 2 half pints. The one half that I did receive was flat and not chilled; from a litre bottle which had obviously been opened for a while and not kept in the fridge. The toilets were slightly unclean and smelly but apart from this, the alcoholic beverages were enjoyed greatly.

What a great place. I arranged to meet friends visiting from overseas here and, to be honest, I chose the place because it was midway between us and because of the reviews here. All we required was something to eat, somewhere to sit and a chance to catch up on the news. The Salutation delivered all of that and much more. It is hard to put my finger on why I was so taken with this place but I can only think that a lot of it is down to the complete niceness of the people running the place and their staff. They were genuinely welcoming, friendly and relaxed and we had a delicious meal and a lengthy catch up. I arrived alone and first and I would have been perfectly comfortable having a solo lunch there (as a woman this is not something I can say for all pubs). I think I have found the perfect British pub in The Salutation - no pretence, no gussied up décor, no lengthy hyperbole-laden menu. I shall most certainly go back

Popped in for a drink following a short dog walk - pub accepted dogs, which was nice! Decided to grab a bite to eat - very friendly staff, and food was served in good time. Highly recommend for a bite to eat and a drink!

The managers of this pub really know what they are doing. A very intelligent business model that involves excellent beers (and other drinks), great service ethic, friendly atmosphere, limited menu but good food (only at advertised times), and various really good ideas like live music from time to time, busing people in from villages that do not have their own pub, and much more.

It's the whole package that works. And the fact that it's not a 'package' thought up by a neck-bearded idiot in a London office bug just some hard working people running a great pub. The decor is ramshackle, the food simple, fresh and high quality and the beer and cider excellent. What's not to love. Last time we were there we had lunch. Mine was a pork pie a cheese and onion roll and a pint of real cider. While we were there we got chatting to some people who were there on a CAMRA coach tour. One of the CAMRA party then played some ragtime on an out of tune piano in the bar. It's just a great place.

BASIC PERFECTION : More beers and ciders than food choices on the menu (lunchtimes only) but simply the best. Simplicity refined to perfection. Superb beers and amazing range of ciders. Great management, chef and staff. The definition of the traditional pub ... pub of the year .... pub of past decades. Very well done!

This is such a friendly pub, in a wonderful spot with great beer and the food is fabulous. The menu is small, but what is served, couldn't be better. The ham, egg and chips is second to none! Lovely garden too.

Living not far from the Salutation. There is nothing better than having a good long dog walk and stopping off at a dog friendly traditional pub. Great choice of local ales. You can grab a fab fresh roll with a doorstep lump of cheese in it - amazing! My friend adores the pork pies aswell!!! Perfect!!!

Stumbled across this pub a little early not aware of opening time of 12 noon advised by manager to wait for 10 minutes in car as it was raining. Nearly left but glad we stayed. This is an old style pub bit run down but adds to the general old world atmosphere. Service is friendly and informative. We ordered the dish of the day,cod and chips (they do a different one daily) must say it was the best pub meal we have had in many a day. Can not fault this establishment for good beers good service and excellent food. A nice treat and a great find

Visited this delightful pub after a trip to the nearby castle and it was worth the short journey. The woman who served us was knowledgable and friendly, food delicious and reasonably priced and it was lovely sitting on the garden admiring the scenery around us. A very enjoyable experience!

Did a local 6 mile walk starting/finishing at this pub. My friends had been here before and were keen to return but this was my first time and it certainly will not be my last! The landlord greeted us all individually which I thought was a nice touch and something that I have not come across before. The beer and the food were excellent as well as the courteous service also from the landlady. They both work extremely hard behind the bar as well as being able to serve food at the tables from the kitchen. For a Friday lunchtime in the middle of the country, I was surprised to see that the place was absolutely full by 1pm. I recommend the Ham from Ham which was delicious. Well done Salutation, looking forward to my return.

Traditional pub with just two small rooms- no frills but none are needed because the beer and the food is just right. Bustling on the weekday lunchtime we visited, a nice atmosphere, warm fire and friendly welcome. The Ploughman's was simple- bread, local cheeses, home-made chutney and pickled onions and for an extra £1 you can add some delicious ham.

Just looking out for somewhere for lunch and saw this place signed from the A38. So glad we did. Very warm welcome. Short menu but the Ploughman's was excellent and well priced. (Lovely cheeses: double and single Gloucester and a very tasty smoked cheese too.) Beer and cider was good. Very busy place, especially considering its off the beaten track location.

We visited here for a Sunday lunch. We turned up just before opening at midday, and waited in a small queue, but this did secure us a table. There is a choice of three dishes which I love as it means it's fresh and made in the kitchen (not in a factory and warmed up).The ham egg and chips are superb. My only gripe would be to add a few more chips on the plate (proper fried chips by the way) and an option of bread and butter would be nice also. (Baked on the premises of course). This is a proper pub selling straight forward well cooked tasty, loved food. They also love beer and cider as much as they love food with a great selection on the menu so enjoy.

If I was local it would be the best local. A fantastic community spirit which if you get a good day you'll be warmly welcomed into. If you know what CAMRA is then you should try this pub. If you know what polite friendly warm conversation is, you should cross your fingers and try this pub. :)My only gripe is, it's too far away, so one of us always has to drive! Lovely beer, a mean ham (from ham) role or pork pie! And if you're lucky, with your timings, good food.

Very impressed by the quality of food at this small but well loved pub. Arrived early & were lucky to get a table. Great selection of beers that change regularly. Food was amazingly high quality & very tasty. Pork belly was accompanied with seasonal veg and a rich Stilton sauce. By the time we had finished, this special had sold out. The pub has a small menu with three dishes which means the food is fresh, seasonal and well executed. Do visit but get there early!

Called in for a Sunday lunchtime pint. A selection of well kept real ale is offered. Didn't eat but doorstep cheese & onion or ham baps appeared to be offered, with mansized home made chips. Run by a couple who know how to run a pub properly and appear to know what it means to run a village pub. They know their beer, they know their regulars. They serve proper Gloucestershire food. You won't find anything served in 'a jus'. There's a fire in the grate and a friendly face behind the bar. Deservedly popular.

Just back from lunch at the Sally Inn. Excellent Admiral's Pie washed down with the inn's own Tiley's porter (lighter and less tart than many) and a hoppy "New Zealand" ale (made with NZ hops, I was told), which cleared away the creamy fish taste left by the pie. Why aren't all pubs like this?

This pub is well known for its real ales & I believe won the acalade of pub of the year. It's a village pub set in the hamlet of Ham near Berkeley, popular with locals who are very friendly I have say.It has guest chef days, but it would be nice if it had a fixed pub food menu rather than hoping you like what the guest chef will be serving up.

Stayed at the Frocester George and ate in the dining room whilst walking the Cotswolds way. My room was lovely- room 12, relatively recently done I think with everything you could want. Spacious room, organic tea and coffee, small fridge with fresh milk in it (yay!!!!) lovely bathroom. The meal was delicious, and the breakfast great, including a wonderful selection of fresh fruit. Would happily return for another stay if I am in the area.

I'm sorry to say, that after reading great reviews and having high expectations of what to expect....the experience was a huge disappointment. 6 of us booked in for Sunday dinner at 2pm,which started well,to be honest....as we were given a choice of the main room or a table set up for 6,in a separate room. We opted for the separate room and took our seats accordingly. After awhile a man came through to take our drinks order and I went 1st....."a o% Guinness please" sorry we don't have that "but I do at my other pub" OK then "could I have an elderflower please" ...."sorry we don't have that" again was the reply OK...."could I have a lime & soda please"....."sorry can't do that due to the trigger on the mixer not working" was the reply. OK...."could I have a lager shandy please"....."sorry can't do that either came the now familiar reply! By this time,it was getting embarrassing in front of the other's waiting to order their drinks and exacerbated,on the point of dehydration....I ordered a tap water.....which along with a gin & flat tonic didn't have ice in. Then.....dinner arrived. I had ordered the 3 meat roast, pork, beef & chicken (£23.50) and my expectations were high....well sadly it wasn't to be. The 3 meat roast consisted of a slice of pork,a slice of beef and a chicken leg plonked on the top...how bizarre! The meal itself was only warm and not piping hot as I would have expected.....after the drinks fiasco,I didn't feel able to complain without drawing attention myself in front of the other members of our party at the table. Finally....the bill came and as well as charging us for £2 for a lime & soda which I couldn't have, an £18 plus service charge had been added to the bill. That was the final insult.....£18 service charge for what exactly?? No drinks of choice and a luke warm meal. I wanted to dispute the service charge but again....I didn't want to draw attention to myself and possibly put my other party members in an embarrassing situation. I would like it refunded to be honest, as another issue I encountered while there....no soap in the soap dispenser despite visiting the toilet at the start of our meal and then again an hour or so later after the meal. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't eat there again or recommend to others to do so either......maybe it was "just a bad day at the office" for the pub on the day of our visit, but then the service shouldn't have been added automatically,if all of the above had been taken in to consideration.

Last time visited “ small Americana “ was 1.95. Then 2.10. Today……2.60. No reason despite costs…..to elevate to this price… There are unfortunately not a lot of “ good coffee shops in Dursley” could do with “Costa” or Coffee1 “ Wake up call……for these stupid prices…..if you want to “ stay open” I’d review all your prices/ ….or you soon will be “ gone” No one wants to fell “ conned” last visit for me!!
