We arrived just before Xmas with high expectations. The joy of the season was in the air and we were looking forward to an exceptional and festive lunch at what we thought would be a high quality well run establishment. We were hugely disappointed from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. As we arrived, I made a discrete enquiry about getting a bottle of champagne for the table as we had a small celebration that warranted it. I was told by a deeply disinterested soul that they had no champagne. She didn’t even manage to lift herself from her recumbent position to deliver the news, but did mention they may have a bottle of prosecco somewhere. No interest, zero customer service, just a flat and drab response. Shortly, a waiter arrived to accompany us to out table for our celebratory Xmas lunch. As we passed the wide-open kitchen door, I could see rows of pre-prepared food on display and hear the noise and swearing coming from within. Why on earth does a busty restaurant, where things can get a bit busy and the language quite colourful, have the door wide open throughout the service? We were taken to our table. I have seen more festive offerings in Strangeways. Moreover, I think our server may have been a recent inmate as he was about as welcoming as a bout of Noro virus. No decoration, no crackers, nothing. A drab empty fireplace, and the Xmas lights which had conked out long ago gave the room a down at heal, almost Dickensian work house feel. And so to eat. A slightly sticky menu ended up in my hand, along with a limited and un-inspiring list of options. Given we all felt dreadful due to the awful surroundings and reception, we began to order with some trepidation. The mood was much deserved for what arrived appeared to have been prepared by someone with no experience of producing food, and who had clearly never heard of Christmas. I have attached some pictures but suffice to say the 'Xmas' dinner consisted of three small slices of Turkey breast and a Yorkshire pudding (seriously?) and a poorly cooked parsnip (boiled!) and a piece of stuffing that had clearly come from a mix, and had never seen the inside of an oven, effectively it was raw. All in all, it was a dismal plate, so devoid of seasonal joy, it would have delighted both scrooge and the grinch in equal measure. I must mention the starter as well. This consisted of two lightly toasted pieces of plastic brown bread and a slab of pate. All duped on a bed of something that was once a salad. The presentation was worthy of a nursery school pupil, who had also clearly been allowed to make the 'Boozy' trifle. I am not certain how anyone thought that the trifle could be called 'Boozy'. Clearly no alcohol was present, and never had been. Perhaps it was just produced by an alcoholic, who had breathed on it? In any event, the 'Trifle was one of the most unpleasant things I have ever had the misfortune to consume. A soggy base, followed by cheap jelly and a tin of cocktail fruit was topped off with what I used to know as 'Dream Topping' and imaginatively sprinkled with hundreds and thousands. For balance, a reasonable and quite tasty prawn cocktail was served as a starter, sadly it gave us false hope. I believe if you enjoy good food and good service this is undoubtedly not the place for you. The local Happy Eater beckoned, but they have closed because they were rubbish too. If you enjoy Spud-u-Like of a Wednesday evening, you will love it.

We visited on 24th October. It was a reasonable day regarding the weather and Stourhead was busy. We called into the Spread Eagle at about 1.30pm. Positives - we got a table inside. It had been cleared but was sticky. Negatives- no vegetarian sandwiches on the menu. But to be fair I was offered ham cheese and chutney without the ham. My friend selected carrot and coriander soup. Both meals were awful. The soup was so diluted that it was tasteless. My brown bread was tasteless as was the awful processed cheese slice (who still uses these abominations?). Only the chutney had flavour. Final negative was that I was chased out of the pub and accused of not paying. I explained exactly how I had paid only to be greeted with a shrug and “ok I believe you” - like she didn’t! And on top of that they dare to add 10% service charge.

Had a table booked for 2:00, we were early so had a drink in the bar whilst waiting for our table. 2:00pm came my Husband asked the girl if our table was ready, she looked confused so he said our name and time she checked and said it was still being used, was going to find us a a different table then decided we could eat in the bar at the table we had been at for the last 20mins! Why didn’t she suggest that to begin with?? We ordered roast beef, wasn’t asked how we liked it so assumed it would be medium cooked, one piece was the other two slightly on the pinker side and didn’t taste of a quality meat. Only one spindly parsnip, no crunch to the roast potatoes, one spoon of cauliflower cheese for both of us and all a bit bland. Overall disappointing will stick to just stopping for a drink in future.

So disappointed. I have eaten at the Spread Eagle on a number of occasions over the years and it has always had an interesting menu and good food. However, assuming it would be the same, I did not check the menu when I booked. What a mistake, especially as I was taking friends there for the first time for my birthday. Very mediocre pub food. Unimaginative menu and pricey for what it was. Would not bother going again. Such a shame that this pub is resting on its laurels as due to its location it has a captive audience.

The food was very disappointing. Not very well cooked at all with both the Mediterranean tart and the fried eggs burnt on the bottom. The chunky chips were overcooked and felt they had just been reheated. The plates were cold too. Considered expensive for the quality of food provided.

We’ve eaten here before when we’ve visited Stourhead and previously we’ve never had any complaints. The pub is in a great setting and it’s very conveniently located. It’s been the better option for lunch than the National Trust cafe by the car park. Sadly, this time wasn’t the best experience for us. We’d planned this day out quite meticulously and we’d booked a table for 12 noon. We had an email confirming our booking at this time, but when we arrived we were told that our booking wasn’t until 2pm! We would never have booked a lunch that late and the staff were sceptical until we showed them the email which clearly confirmed a table booked for 12 noon. They then said they could fit us in at 12, but it did feel rather like they were doing us a favour. We had arrived around 10 minutes early and were only allowed to order soft drinks as they don’t serve alcohol until 12. We also weren’t allowed to go into the dining area until 12, but were then irritated to find a family already sitting down. The menu was quite limited and we ordered the only starter that we both fancied. This arrived promptly and was pretty nice, although I am not a fan of slates being used instead of plates (mine also had the corner missing). We both ordered the roast beef and cauliflower cheese for two. I can only say that this was very disappointing. The beef was cooked nicely, but the Yorkshire pudding was soggy and inedible. The gravy tasted strange. The cauliflower cheese was almost tasteless, the sauce tasted as though it had come from a packet. This experience reminded me of why I avoided pub roast lunches for years, but having had my faith restored in recent times at local pubs, I felt confident in giving this a go. I really wished I hadn’t. I think we’ll be going to the National Trust cafe next time.

This is by far the best pub meal I have had in a long time. Given its location the prices were very reasonable and the food was delicious. We were looked after by attentive staff who went out of their way to make sure I could make good choices for my allergies- when I asked if a starter was dairy free the waitress asked the chef and the reply was “we can make it dairy free” this is great news when usually the choice in places is limited because it’s all pre prepared. For main I had a delicious Mediterranean tart which was both gluten and dairy free and my partner had a delicious pulled pork brioche burger. Don’t be put off by other reviews this is definitely a gem and much better than the overpriced NT cafe at the entrance to the gardens. Dog friendly too which was a real bonus- we will be returning!

It’s a difficult one… location is great and there is really no other option if you want a roast or pub food in the area. Which feels like the reason they think it’s acceptable to sell very mediocre expensive food. The roast was £19… it came out and was cold in some places and piping hot in others. Roast beef was over cooked therefore tough, but also cold, so didn’t want to send it back in case they microwaved it and it would then be more tough. We did complain, but also said that we were in a rush so would eat it as it was, as although it was cold, it was not entirely inedible. And as it turned out the manager didn’t make it to the table until after we’d finished anyways. Wasn’t expecting any money off as we did eat it all, they did take off the (optional) service as a goodwill Gesture 🤦♀️ I would say if you have time, Google and look for other pubs in the area and go after your walk, it is not worth the money. Or grab something form the national trust cafe at the top which is always decent!

From the moment I booked a table, to saying farewell we were all very well looked after. We were made welcome as soon as we arrived, a good range of drinks and a varied menu meant we all found a drink and meal to suit our tastes, no complaints from anyone. Service was swift but we were not pressured. The last meal we had here was also good and we would all like to visit again soon and will spread the word. Congratulations, you have achieved what many other venues struggle to provide.

Our group was quite a large party and we had booked a Christmas meal with pre-ordered food. I had the soup starter which tasted bland and was served with a white bread roll. No option given for brown. Then I had a Mediterranean Tart which was inedible. It was slimy in the middle and the crust was as dry as a cracker. The chips were the chunky variety and were dry and floury and almost inedible. The raspberry roulade was nice apart from the frozen raspberry used as decoration. Finally they only served Full Fat milk. I mean seriously. The service was excellent and attentive. The place suffers from Captive Audience Syndrome. Ie there is no other option so the impression is it’s there way or tough. To me this is the type of restaurant that reminds me of Britain 20 years ago. Distinctly mediocre food and disappointing.

Very, very nice. Thought food might be somewhat mediocre as we could see that they are very busy, being on the Stourhead estate but not so. Sat in the bar area and it was quite comfortable. I had venison casoulet which was delicious, wife had fish and chips (beautiful big piece of fish and nicely cooked chips), and daughter had burger which looked nice and she said was delicious. Good service (perhaps tables could be cleared a bit faster as noticing people repeatedly having to sit at uncleared tables) and friendly.

This pub is in the most beautiful grounds of Stourhead National Trust Park. In the most lovely setting we had a fabulous lunch there and it was the perfect pre Christmas light trail thing to do. We have eaten here many times and it’s always great. Our waitress Julie was just brilliant and sometimes it’s the staff that make a meal experience for you. My fish & chips were spot on, nice to get proper mushy peas and not fancy smashed minted peas. My son loved his Burger and his girlfriend enjoyed the veg tart. We had apple pie, Christmas pud and sticky toffee pudding after and were happy with all of it. It’s right in the heart of the Stourhead grounds so why wouldn’t you treat yourself to a meal before your walk.

I've walked past the Spread Eagle Inn so many times on our walks around Stourhead and never popped in. As it was my partner's birthday (and it was hammering down with rain) in we went. It was fab! Really friendly and polite lady at the bar made us feel like we belonged there, and we had a truly gorgeous meal, served quickly and in a really lovely room (we sat in the small restaurant bit out the back). The food, I can't emphasize this enough, was terrific and not at all overpriced. It will become a regular thing, but maybe after the walk next time as I could barely move after eating all that :D Thank you from us both!

It is a very convenient location after wandering around Stourhead. Booking is essential as it gets very busy, even in mid November. The choice of food was limited but probably covers most peoples requirements. The tables (particularly ours) are very close together and make it quite difficult to get in and out. The service was "stretched" and we had long waits between courses and drinks being delivered, but very friendly and aware that it was slow so don't know if we were just unlucky on the day. The food was very if not extremely good and we all enjoyed every bit of every course.

We have come to this inn over many years, usually just for a drink but sometimes for lunch; it is very busy and well placed on the edge of the National Trust Stourhead estate. Even in November I thought it wise to book for Sunday lunch and even then could not get my first choice of time. No problem because we parked in their private car park and did a pleasant perambulation of the lake before taking our table for 5 an hour later. The Sunday lunch menu is different with a couple of roasts plus a number of their daily items. Starters are not cheap and we chose to share - a wise decision given their sizes. The whitebait were plump and the pate delicious. 3 of us ordered the roast topside of beef, each to a different rarity. They were tender and served with a choice of 5 vegetables. 2 of us had the venison casserole which was scrumptious and served with 3 (different again) vegetables. The ladies shared a bottle of NZ Sauvignon Blanc and the chaps enjoyed pints of St Austel Pedigree. No room for desserts but excellent "proper" coffees. The whole meal was a delightful experience on a grey autumn day improved to no small degree by the delightful Julie, who anticipated our requirements and was constantly jolly. I used to rate the Spread Eagle as a good but not outstanding place to eat. It has now moved up considerably into the top ten locally for me.

My partner and I booked a table a couple of weeks in advance as, due to previous experiences, we were expecting a high-quality Sunday lunch. I can imagine many people visit the Spread Eagle Inn as part of their visit to Stourhead (which is lovely...

We called in whilst visiting Stourhead. As we hadn’t booked we weren’t sure whether or not we would be able to get a table or not but thankfully they had one. Best Sunday lunch we’ve had for a long time. Plenty of meat, more than...

We were lucky to arrive as a table became free. The restaurant was heavily booked and so we ate in the ‘first come, first served’ pub. The menu provided good options. My wife had a potted crab starter which was excellent. As a main course...

We stopped here for lunch after a visit to Stourhead. Food was a bit pricey but was promptly delivered and plentiful. They’d obviously been busy as some things were missing from their menu.

15 minutes to serve the drinks, 40 minutes to serve the main course (no starters) and the ham sandwich order for my 8 year old was incorrect. When the waiter came with the bill he explained there was a service charge added, amazing he didn’t...

Blackboards displayed menus outside - but it wasn't clear that most of it wasn't available on a Sunday. Order was taken and paid for (plus tip taken in advance) with no mention of the fact that what was ordered wasn't going to be possible. 30...

Our group of four all thought our food (fish and chips, burger and ploughman’s) was average, but overpriced. The service was excellent though; prompt, friendly and efficient. Despite the service, I don’t think that we would go back.

I rarely write reviews but food was so terrible I wouldnt want anyone else to waste their money. There was no harissa flavour on the harissa sweet potato salad. The sweet potatoes were so undercooked they were crunchy. The salmon was overcooked and chewy. The wrap my OH had wasn't warm and was yucky and he had about 5 chips on his plate. We fed back at the time as well. Will never go back. Can't believe how busy it was in there, I would never be a repeat customer, overpriced and appalling food.

Wedding coordinators both amazing. Prompt and professional support and advice. Food was better than some Michelin restaurants I’ve been to. Five star quality; amazing service and would highly recommend. Venue went over and above what was necessary from free coffee to supporting external vendors and accommodation

Absolutely fantastic, would very highly recommend. Had an evening meal here one evening and a Sunday roast and both times the food and service were exceptional. The friendly staff are extremely helpful, and (again) the food is brilliant
