The Swallows Return in Worthing

Went for Sunday lunch and the food was simply amazing. Staff were friendly and polite. Even had space for dessert. A lovely cosy restaurant. Go and check it out for yourself.

Food was over cooked and sent back, I was left for over an hour before anyone even took my plate. Shame because the atmosphere is quite nice.

Food was lovely, the building is beautiful. Very clean and tidy. However the service wasn't the best. Our server was very forgetful and seemed overwhelmed. Forgot our drinks then forgot to correct our bill after we provided a blue light discount.

Waitress was polite and attentive to our table, food was brought out in a timely manner

Went when very quiet in fact only 2 in the bar, 2 bar staff very friendly another was definitely in the wrong job 🙄 very miserable just stayed on the right side of rude! In fact was almost beginning to affect my own mood!! Even my partner mentioned it and she's normally very quiet..he's bringing ur place down!! I was only in for a cpl. Cocktails so didn't stay long!!

Great looking building with loads of parking. Just had a Boxing day luch for seven people and was impressed by the food which there was plenty of and the service which was very good. Would go there again. By the way the bill was very reasonabe too for a Boxing Day.

Friendly pub/restaurant, with a nice atmosphere. We visited today for Sunday lunch, for the first time. The vegan roast was large, but quite disappointing - just vegetables with some sort of nuts & fruits creation on top (picture shown is before gravy, a parsnip & broccoli arrived). My partner had the vegan aubergine parmigiana, which, again, I would say was quite underwhelming. Definitely could do better with vegan options. 24/12/24 we visited again today for a Christmas Eve family lunch. Of the unexciting vegan options, I went for the aubergine gratin; it was quite bland and came with an undressed salad & plain bread (not even margarine available); they really do need to do better

We came here for our works Christmas do on the Christmas charity quiz night. It was so much fun, we had our food from the festive menu, which was delicious and considering how busy the night was, all the staff were amazing throughout and looked after us as a big table.

Very disappointed with our lunch today, had to wait at least 45 minutes before our food arrived, only to find that the fish was overcooked, more batter than fish, if there is a wait, would be a good idea to inform the customer. Will think twice before we try again.

This restaurant has all the right things going for it.Easily accessible from the main A259 Worthing to Littlehampton Road, plenty of car parking space and a warm welcoming interior creating an environment that exudes charm. So where did it miss out? Well the staff were pleasant and having been shown to our table our drinks arrived promptly with the menus. Having ordered we sat back in anticipation and waited and waited. Yes it was 5 days before Christmas but the food arrived 50 minutes later! Only when the waiter was made aware of our unease did he offer an explanation of where our food was. Four meals then arrived but it was another 5 to 10 minutes before the final one turned up. Three plates of Fish and Chips were mediocre and the fish had been overcooked and over battered. The Fishcakes and the Chicken Schnitzel were better. We were asked if our meals were ok and we did not complain as we should have done, for fear that we might have had to wait even longer for a replacement. The whole experience was underwhelming. Living locally we were hoping that this restaurant would have improved on a previous disappointing visit, a couple of years back, which led to us not wanting to return. Sadly we have been put off bringing our family here over the Christmas period. Clearly the problems lay in the ability for the kitchen to cope with the demands placed on it for whatever reason.

Sadly disappointed with the festive menu. The quality of the food did not match the price. All felt as if it had been kept warm and not freshly cooked. Stuffing and bread sauce not provided. I know that’s a personal choice but I expected them.

We visited 'Mark & Team' for my Birthday Dinner on Sat 14th Dec. We requested one course only from the Festive Menu expecting it to equate to the price of an average Main Course.. But to our surprise, we were shocked to receive a bill of circa £80 for just 2 Main Courses and 2 Drinks! We were expect to pay ££50 to £60 We are local and regular customers, but now we'll think twice about coming again((

Went for a staff xmas meal all dinners were pre booked, no service, no greeting, no bar staff, food was an hour later than booked, never again, gave up after main meal as was dry and cold, left before the long wait for pudding!!

Sadly we waited 15 minutes to be seated despite having a table reserved. Once seated we waited an additional 10 minutes before our orders wete taken. Then our starters arrived 35 minutes later... very late and disappointing. Our waitress didn't seem too concerned once we complained. We did request, which was given, another bottle of wine to compensate for the delay to our food, which we appreciated. It would have been nice if the staff offered this rather than us asking. Food quality was good though. However overall, a disappointing experience.

Great looking restaurant and plenty of parking. Manager today at the bar at 12pm was polite, friendly and professional. Dog friendly. Ordered via QR code, easy to use, drinks and food delivered to your table. Food was reasonably priced, big portion and nicely cooked and presented. Overall, a great dinning experience out of town. Would visit again and do recommend.

My only criticism of this place is that the hot drinks are never hot

We arrived at 15:55 and waited for at least 5 minutes before anyone spoke to us. Our table wasn’t ready until 16:15 and during this time my 85 year old mum, who was using a walking stick, was not offered a seat while we waited. The table was laid for 5 instead of 6, another knife was missing and we asked 3 times for a knife before a member of staff gave us a knife from another table. We waited for about 45 minutes for our meal for our and the person who I believed was the manager served us with two vegan aubergine gratins, but he referred to the meal as aubergine Parmesan! We had to confirm it was the gratin as we wanted a vegan meal. We were not asked if we wanted any condiments with our meals and we had to get the attention of a member of staff to help. The manager was very abrupt and unhelpful during our visit. We felt very unwelcome and we were extremely disappointed with the whole experIence.

Took part in their 40% offer on Thursday early evening, very busy the staff were coping. Table booking missed. Food good as always.We will return (like the swallows).

Very tastie food not long to wait. Staff very helpful and friendly.

Food was good, beer well kept and service excellent. However the ambience in the area we were placed was awful - in the rear of the restaurant with harsh lighting, paint peeling from the walls, no soft furnishings and hence extremely noisy.

It is a few years since I've visited the Swallows Return, sadly having been put off by a bad experience. Visited on 28/10/24 (reluctantly due to no other booking options available). Very pleasantly surprised! My husband said his mushroom starter was the best he's ever had(and he's had a lot!).Sunday roasts were delicious, lovely roast potatoes and veg. In particular wanted to mention our waitress Lucy who was so on the ball at a very busy Sunday afternoon. She had her eyes on all the tables and knew just what she was doing! Well done Lucy 👏

Love the food at the Swallows and was well cooked by Dom R and came out piping hot, Kirsty was our Waitress and arranged our table as our number was larger than expected, I had the roast Turkey with Trimmings and crumble for dessert. Will return to this venue

What a great night with friends, food was cooked to perfection and no long wait, staff were brilliant and very helpful as there were a few of us eating, will be going again.

The Sunday lunch was amazing! We sat in the garden, by choice, the surroundings were a bit lack lustre, not much beauty around and seen as is close to a27 some thought could have gone into creating a natural sight/sound barrier I.e. with bamboo. Yes garden needs some more attention and the food, friendliness and service was wonderful.

My waitress Lauren was really polite and considerate and smiley. Sam the chef made my food to perfection. Everything tasted amazing. It was a lovely atmosphere and will definitely be back again.

We had a group meal here for a birthday the service wasn't brilliant to be honest long wait between starters mains and dessert after everyone had been served mains 1 of our party was still waiting 20 minutes later for a steak . The food well people who had the gammon said it was very tough the burgers were overcooked hard on the sides . The swallows return is a lovely venue shame about the experience we had don't think we will be returning anytime soon

All perfect, just needed the fire on!!

Really nice place that let itself down. They allow dogs in but we were tucked away up the end of the building. Very slow bar service, and felt like they were understaffed. The manager spent most of the time faffing with his pad and ignoring the people at the bar. We had Sea Bass, which was actually ok, and a steak which was terrible. It was very dry and quite tough. It was like it had been left under a heat lamp for a while. We didn't complain as nobody actually bothered to come and ask how everything was. Having spoken to a couple of friends, it seems that this isn't uncommon. I don't think we'll be going back, which is a shame.

This is a great location with excellent food and service. We will definitely recommend this to others, and will return soon.

Visited lunch time, very good service and choice on menu.

The atmosphere was lovely, the staff well presented, polite and friendly. Our drinks were good but the food wasn’t as nice as it should have been. The beef was as tough as old boot leather and the roast potatoes, carrots and parsnips had been sitting around too long and had an odd not fresh taste. The other vegetables were good.

Over 6 attempts to book a Christmas meal. By phone and email. No response.

Very nice sirloin steak, but service was slow

Eaten here numerous times over the years. This visit was not upto normal high expectations and service. Booking through the app was very difficult and wouldn't actually save the reservation. Tried contacting the pub 6 times with no answer. Pudding plate was served with what can only be described as a damp cloth smell assumed where the edge was wiped before serving. We're not provided soup or pie of the day info without asking and no offer for additional drinks without asking. Staff were very polite but clearly too busy to provide better service. Understaffed maybe the cause of this poorer visit.

This looks absolutely wonderful and peaceful, just like my father always remembered spending his summer holidays here. I wonder if the owner can find out whether it is the same place. My cousin in York confirms that it is. So in the 1930s or thereabouts it would have belonged to Anita (or Neta) McNeil, née Lawrence (aka Aunt Biddy), military nurse in the Boer War who were known as Nightingales.

Great place for food, very happy with the Sunday roast “I had the pork and it was lovely!” Kids loved running around, we did book a table in advance , it was a hot sunny afternoon and I thought it would be packed but it wasn’t! Loads of parking and a great for posh pub food!

We took the dogs with us and were pleased to see fresh water and treats were provided for them as soon as we arrived 🐾 We were served by Honey who was the most helpful waitress I’ve experienced in ages. Polite and engaging with nothing being too much trouble for her. Thanks for making our evening Honey Overall the food was good, everything was hot and the veg cooked perfectly. The fish cakes were delicious. The pies we ordered had to be returned as the pastry was insipid and did not look visually appealing. We were told by a male waiter the pies were cooked for a set time - might we suggest if this is the case the time is changed. Even when the pies were returned to us they hardly had any colour! Also the pie of the day was chicken and pancetta, lots of chicken but nothing else!

Second visit there, everything was excellent.

Had not been here for a number of years due to food choices. I was surprised on my return food that I chose was excellent with a great atmosphere. Also nice that we where not hurried between courses.

as my nearest restaurant was fully booked we made the short 15 minute drive to the swallows return , i had pie of the day and my friend had lasagne, i must say the service was excellent from start to finish ,so well done

We celebrated my mum’s 70th birthday yesterday. James and the team were all amazing. There were 20 of us for lunch and everyone had a great time, the food and atmosphere was also amazing. James responded quickly to emails / pre ordering the food & was a great host on the day. Will definitely be going back.

We visited last Friday lunchtime for a family meal for five of us. We had to wait a fair few minutes to be seated to our pre-booked table which was frustrating with a 93 year old relative for whom we had to find a seat whilst we waited. We had a lovely server, Lorraine who enhanced our experience, especially for our elderly relative who was celebrating their birthday. Lorraine was welcoming, professional, friendly and attentive and she made my elderly relative feel very special which was lovely. There was a good choice of starters, mains and desserts and all that we ordered was tasty with a fair cost for the type of restaurant this is. We enjoyed a leisurely meal (always is with an oldie) and did not feel rushed at all. Will be happy to return.

Great food! We both had an amazing starter and main. I also had a dessert (the honeycomb ball) which had great presentation, but I felt the chocolate ball let it down. Not great chocolate in my opinion. Otherwise really good food!!

We went here today having walked out of another pub (The Wolrds End) after having to endure the worst attitude any of the 5 of us had ever encountered from a waitress. We were glad we came here. The food was pretty good, although the fish cakes were a bit of a let down. The other 4 dishes were all liked, with the food served in good time, and hot. The waitress service was efficient and unobtrusive. As pub food goes this was pretty good and at fair prices, so would we go back, definitely which is more than we can say for our first stop!

The hamburger was amazing with an added bonus of chopped brisket on top. One of the best this Texas girl has enjoyed.

Had my birthday lunch on Monday 17th June. The food was fantastic. The most incredible pineapple & ginger salad dressing. Kirsty our waitress was delightful. Really helpful and chatty. The barn lives up to its name with Swallows darting around outside. Beautiful place.
