Friendly enough but pub is outdated

Lovely room with very comfy bed. We were in the area for a wedding and the staff were very helpful in organising transport to/from the venue for us, thank you!

Husband and I came in for dinner this evening, Husband had whitebait, then sloppy Rascal and then raspberry brownie. I had scampi and then the best dessert I've had for a long time! Cherry Pie and custard. The lovely waitress/ barmaid came and said I'm afraid we have no apple pie! We do have cherry instead! Ohh my thank goodness for the change. Good 90s music playing and meet a lovely dog too.

Beautiful location. Staff were efficient friendly and helpful. Rooms were great everything worked as it should. The building is quite old so if your looking for chic this isn't it. The rooms were comfortable and warm with quality mattress and bed linen. Foid here was good and the service was great. Everyone was friendly. The area is pretty. The Swan is somewhere I would definitely go to again

What a disappointment - the restaurant had a very limited menu and unbelievably did not serve coffee/tea after the meal. A number of us went there as we had a concert to go in the evening at the Exchnge. We had been to previous concerts and always went for a dinner prior and enjoyed a meal @ the Swan Inn - regretfully no longer are we going anymore. It appears to have lost the appeal of what a dining experience should be. Avoid this place.

Good ale and comfortable rooms. Unfortunately after a change of management there seems to be no management. Rooms are getting tired and not serviced daily. Food and breakfast not served every day.

Wow what a change, we have visited the swan inn several times over the past 3 years, and none of them pleasant due to previous landlord crude comments. I was glad to hear it was now under new people, the staff have always been been polite and friendly always made us felt welcome, so glad to see that Sarah ( now the general manager) and Kayleigh are still there, those two ladies do an amazing job and nothing is ever to much trouble, we'll done ladies you have turned the swan around . The swan inn has a lovely atmosphere with great locals always having a laugh and a joke, especially gout coner, my husband favourite place in the pub 😄 We will most definitely be returning to the swan more often now . Thank you ladies

A beautiful pub and restaurant in the heart of sturminster newton. The garden has been transformed and is now a stunning place to relax with a drink. Thank you to the new team and especially the new landlady Sarah for being a wonderful host, very professional and friendly. It is a fabulous place to go for a refreshing drink and a tasty snack or meal. I believe it has changed management recently and I would highly recommend a visit.

Second time I've stayed at this wonderful place bed like a soft marshmallow clean room fantastic delishous breakfast real money for value.

Won't go again. I was informed it was a nice place to eat. Indeed the building is nice and well set out, the staff on the other hand...The women behind the bar ( Sarah I believe her name is - we later found out she is the manager) was as common as muck, with language to suit. Okay, she didn't use foul language when talking to any our party but she clearly doesn't have a filter, nor a volume control because we could hear her throwing all sorts of foul language when we sat in the restaurant area..Also if you're working in that industry, Sarah, it would help if you were good at maths. You trying to total our bill was both hilarious and embarrassing.. I certainly didn't expect this from what Hall and Woodhouse claim as one of their top establishments.

We had a family reunion here and a number of us stayed for 2 nights, I have to say that from the minute we arrived we were looked after in the best possible way, the Staff were all friendly and helpful, The Rooms were warm and cosy and spotlessly clean, The Bar itself was a welcoming site, a good old fashioned English Pub with a fine selection of Ales and lagers, and very friendly regulars who enjoyed a chat and are proud of the local area and history. its a beautiful town and cannot wait to return (Hopefully for the Cheese festival in 2025) Shout out to Sarah & Geoff for running such a fine establishment.

Love this pub. This was 2nd pub of the night , a cousins reunion night out , pub had a friendly atmosphere and live music that night we all ended evening here . In future I would like to also book in for the night.

Fabulous staff, warm welcome, clean very small room but had a comfortable bed. Great beers at the bar! Would definitely stay there again and certainly would recommend it. Small negative about the room was it was really dark 2 bulbs not working.

Good food, service was good, they need coffee machine going all day often I would go in there for a coffee and my husband a cider as I do not want alcohol in the day so we end up going home or go elsewhere which is a shame.

This review is for the restaurant that we visited on Saturday 24 February 2024. We had a very pleasant waitress who guided us to our table. I ordered liver and bacon with vegetables. The liver was overcooked and the bacon was very tough and inedible. Parsnips were totally burnt and akin to charcoal pieces, totally inedible. All of the small baby carrots showed signs of being burnt and scorched. My wife's bowl of chicken with salad came with a rasher of bacon, which again was very tough and inedible. We were the only customers in the restaurant. The question is how can the chef during the quiet period, manages to burn the food and then dishes up the food and says that it's ready to go to the customers table. Obviously no care for customer service nor any pride in their work. Will not go back and will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Went to The Swan for 18th birthday meal that was booked 3weeks ago. When we arrived, no table, no chef, kitchen closed. DISGUSTING treatment. Nobody bothered to call and tell us!! NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!!!!!

Stayed for one night for a concert at The Exchange. The room was very nice. Comfortable bed, clean and nice shower room. The staff were very helpful (one lady in particular). Good location for the theatre and parking onsite. They had a live band on the night we stayed and it might as well have been in the same room. We were out till late and on return we could not even put the TV on as the band was so loud. It didn't worry us too much as we just waited for it to finish before we could sleep, but that was gone midnight and that might be an issue to some. The restaurant was so cold people were eating in their coats which made it unpleasant. Plus it has no atmosphere, like you have been put in a cold back room. The food however was nice ...simple fare like lasagne, sausages and mash etc but obviously homemade and tasty. They also do not do breakfast which surprised us and was a shame. When we go away we like to have a nice breakfast as well. I'm not sure I would stay here again just from the noise and the restaurant situation but certainly couldn't fault the room or the staff.

Stayed at the Swan Inn Sturminster Newton for 2 nights, an excellent experience, all staff friendly and helpful, very friendly landlord nothing to much trouble and found time to chat (not always the case in other locations that I have stayed in ). Evening meal in the restaurant was excellent. I would highly recommend and certainly stay there again.

Came for a Sunday roast and it was amazing! Food beautifully prepared and the waitress was very pleasant and attentive. Will be returning and look forward to trying the nut roast next time 😊

Went here for family lunch, food took nearly an hour to arrive, pudding 40 minutes. The food was good, staff friendly.

Just moved into the area and we went to the Swan for a beer as it allows dogs, young lad behind the bar extremely welcoming and friendly. I have since been back on my own with our dog after a walk. Again the young lad behind the bar very pleasant. BUT what I assume was the landlord was erring towards the rude side. Our little dog ‘attempted’ to cock his leg as soon as we walked in (not his usual habit) and he was stopped immediately without emptying any of his tank! Landlord talking to a friend was then heard to say ‘that’s why we shouldn’t have dogs in’. So while dogs are allowed I didn’t find them dog friendly. If the young guy behind the bar hadn’t got my drink poured I would have walked out as felt extremely uncomfortable. Not the sort of welcome I expected when new in area. White Hart or Bank House in future.

We had the most wonderful dinner, the scallops were amazing! The service was excellent and the atmosphere very welcoming. I can't recommend it too highly and we will be returning often.

Nice typical English pub, just spoilt by the prices on the printed menu not matching the itemised bill, had the difference been listed as a separate service charge I would have understood.

Very welcoming staff. The manager was very talkative. Only dropped in for a quick drink as we were cycling the North Dorset Trailway. Would deffinatly pop back in. Lovely bear garden as well.

Friendly local pub. We only pop in to have a pint while waiting for our takeaways but always made to feel welcome. Never seen any of their accommodation so I cannot comment on the rooms

I am a local,but they always say if you're a traveler,go whare the locals go.Good service.Beautiful garden,friendly and helpful staff. Never stayed there because I live just down the road. Oh and dog friendly.

Stayed overnight, was not warned about the music downstairs that would continue until at least midnight. When downstairs a desperate DJ played extremely loud old club hits in a tiny room to an audience of 2 old men and a dog. Nowhere on the website mentioned music at all, although the staff insisted it was advertised but failed to show where. We assumed we were staying in a village pub not a wannabe nightclub. The room was clean and nicely furnished with good tea and coffee facilities that bounced all night due to the vibrations of the music through the floor. Consequently got no sleep or any type of refund or at the very least an apology. Thanks for a very mediocre stay, will not be coming again.

Stayed friday & saturday night while attending wedding nearby. Jeff (the host) and his family and staff went out of their way to make me welcome - even offering me a lift to the wedding venue. They also introduced me to some of the locals in the bar, who proved to be also welcoming. Rooms were very clean and comfortable and showers had powerful rainheads. Breakfast was well cooked and fresh to order. Free car parking available to rear.

Sunday lunch. From the moment I walked in I was met with cheerful staff and good service. Atmosphere was great, quite full with locals enjoying a Sunday drink. Ordered 12 hour confit belly pork. Took a while to be served but not surprised as the portion of pork was huge . Came with roasted potatoes,homemade Yorkshire, various well cooked veg and truffled cauliflower cheese. The finest roasted belly pork I have eaten. The crackling was of the chart! Will definitely recommend and will definitely return. All round a brilliant Sunday lunch.

Do not stay here if you wish to sleep excessive loud booming noise until midnight ruined our stay. Would of been nice when we booked to have been advised of this and we would of declined to stay

Don't go the landlord is aggressive and rude !!! If you want to be threatened and spoken to in a vial manner then the Swan is the place to go.

Well yesterday evening we thought it would be nice to meet out friends in the Swan Inn for a drink and watch the football. We parked in the establishments car park approx 1850 and seen that the village had erected a pop up ice rink close by and went to have a look. At this point the manager of the pub shouted across the car park that we could not park where we had if not using the venue, a reasonable request. I explained that we were just having a look at the ice rink and would be meeting out friends inside before kick off at 1900. As we walked towards the ice rink He shouted again that he was annoyed at people using the car park and not his establishment. I thought at this point it might be a good idea to diffuse the situation, approached him shook his hand and introduced myself and explained we had met before when he had been just as rude as he was now but we fully intended to use his establishment for the next few hours but was just going to have a quick look at the ice rink. At this point he threatened to smash my windscreen if I didn’t move the car. I advised him against this and as he picked up a nearby empty beer keg and approached me aggressively, I took out my mobile phone to record the incident. On seeing my phone he became even more aggressive punched me in the chest and snatched my phone from my hand throwing it as hard as he could into an adjoining property. I asked my wife to immediately call the police and withdrew to a safe distance. I entered the establishment to inform our friends we would now probably not be joining them at took the opportunity to inform the manager, some one I knew to be an ex serviceman as I am myself that this was not the behaviour I would expect from someone who served his country. He asked me to leave, obviously!!! Which i did peacefully. Sturminster Newton is a small and quite community with many friendly and quality places to eat and drink(and watch football) the swan inn is NOT one of them.

Had a lovely meal here last Saturday and decides to eat here again. My husbands fish and chips was OK. I ordered Thai red curry. What I received was overcooked shredded chicken in some kind of liquid, with a sliced red chilli on top.

Had an evening meal here with my wife, very enjoyable it was too! The staff are very helpful and friendly. Prices are fair and I cannot fault this lovely pub in any way.

Had a lovely lunch today in the very pretty garden - an unexpected bonus. Sorry, didn't take a photo of the food, I was too busy looking at the plants! Smelt amazing too!

When travelling all day you do not want to discover that live music is vibrating through your room until we'll passed midnight. The room cleaning..bathroom bin not emptied and no liner. Dusty bath. The website claims breakfast is included, it is not.

In Sturminster Newton for personal reasons and we visited the Swan for an evening meal. Superb location, very clean, good choice of food. Staff were superb and very friendly, as was I believe it was the owner too.

It's not the fabulous food which is so appealing. It's not the great beers or wine. It's not the oh-so-comfy bed. Though each of these warrant a 5-star rating in their own right, the overwhelming high point of the Swan is the nothing-is-too-much-trouble attitude of the staff and the feeling that everybody who visits will be treated as a friend rather than a customer. Lovely Emma and Geoff lead a lovely team of lovely people. Go see them and become their friends too.

Walked into pub, was immediately asked what was I required, I said food and drinks, we were offered various places inside and outside as it was pleasant we sat outside were offered menus and drinks. The drinks came swiftly and we ordered our food, again there was little wait for the food as it was relatively simple, my Caesar salad was lovely as well as my sweat and coffee. As it started to rain very slightly we were taken inside to a table.

A very warm and friendly Pub, the staff are so helpful and kind! The food is all cooked fresh from locally sourced ingredients and is served in the very well decorated restaurant, a fantastic location for a family meal or a great night out!

We were booked in for one night by our friends in order to attend a local party.Upon arrival we were looked after by Colin who, although he said he wasn't used to booking guests in, showed us to room 2 and was pleasant and helpful.The room was spacious and clean with a lovely view of Sturminster Newton from the window.After we returned from our function we retired to bed at around midnight.The noise continued from the bar below until around 1.30 a.m. which might not be to everyone's liking but it is a pub after all.Breakfast was served to us and the other guests (who were all there for the same function) at 9.00am.There was a rushed feeling to the whole process throughout breakfast.When my wife asked if she could have her bacon well done she was told "No. It all just comes out together as we have thirty some people coming for lunch today."My wife's order arrived wrong and she left her bacon. My egg was solid.It's worth noting that there is no cereal or yoghurts etc.The feeling shared by the breakfast guests was that we were rushed through breakfast.I am now wearing my hard hat as I have read the owners previous response to a less than perfect review.

It was so good to introduce a third generation of my family (my daughters in their early 20s) to this great location. I have been bringing my father here for a while and we are never disappointed by the quality of the food (excellent and generous portions!) and our welcome. And gen z were impressed! Thank you! Called in here on a Sunday evening when most of the pubs in the area were shut - but what a lovely find! Attentive friendly service, beautiful garden, sadly no food being served but gave us lots of recommendations, and even offered us some of their Chinese takeaway! Very dog friendly with lots of treats from the friendly barman.

We found the Hotel an excellent place to stay. Geoff and Emma were so helpful and thoughtful. The accommodation was first class. The atmosphere created was home from home. Our dog was made very welcome which put us at ease. 10/10 as far as we were concerned. Will return. Lovely area for walks.

Although warned that the menu would be limited due to Covid restrictions, there was still plenty of choice, and all the dishes on offer were so tempting that it was hard to choose. The Salmon Salad Nicoise (which I eventually opted for) was sublime and my father had the ham and cheese board which he thoroughly enjoyed. The servings were very generous and the waiting staff could not have been more helpful or attentive not only to us but to all the other people lunching that day.

Had another wonderful meal here this evening, having come here for the first time a few weeks ago, having had another lovely meal and evening with friends who were staying here. Emma and Jeff made us feel very welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals and the lovely quality wines on offer. We would thoroughly recommend anyone to dine here, now that it has had a change of Management.

This was our first visit under the new ownership. The decor and rooms were of a good standard but the evening meal was poor and expensive. The full English breakfast was also poor with no cereal, yoghurts or fruit available. Whilst the room was lovely we won't be staying here in future

Had a wonderful time, my son, my partner and myself. We had a double bed and single in the one room very clean and plenty of room, our hosts were so nice and friendly, bed & breakfast very good value for money and food was great. They allow dogs which is great for those lovely walks my sister was able to come as her dog could come so we had some lovely family time Thank you The Swan Inn ❤

Jeff & staff friendly and accommodating very clean and comfortable, beds ensure a good night's sleep, food is lovely & all in price is reasonable & dog friendly too, the area is ideal for walks of natural beauty. We all had wonderful relaxing stay, we will return & recommend... Money well spent in our view. Weymouth about an hour drive for fun day out.

Ate in the pub restaurant last night. Huge improvements by the new owners. Excellent food providing interesting choices with unusual garnishes, well presented and combined with good service. As we are locals will be eating there again

Found this place on the Internet. Very pleasant place to say food was lovely room was excellent very clean the owners Jeff and his wife lovely people. Excellent atmosphere very friendly staff we stayed two nights on the second night we had a lovely meal was absolutely delicious would highly recommend. Breakfast was included with Our stay which was excellent. Would definitely stay again.

Visited last week for my sons birthday. They appeared to be managing things well within covid guidelines. Every meal we ordered was spot on - steaks were cooked to perfection. Good portion sizes and little 'extra's' on each plate like the lobster hollandaise or sorbets with desserts just made the dishes stand out. Very happy overall, nice ambience. The staff put a little birthday message in chocolate sauce on the plate for my sons dessert which was a nice touch. We will come again and wish you well for the future.

The food is overpriced. The owners were unprofessional and argued in front of us- a few times. They also went missing a few times and we had to look for them to order and pay our bill. It felt like faulty towers. The food though looked nice but not enough on the plate for the money we were left hungry. We had to go to coop around the corner for sandwhiches afterwards. Plus food had odd combinations that did not match and did not taste nice. Very disappointed and really not worth the price tag. We will not be returning and not recommending.

Had dinner here last night first time since it reopened and the new management. The menu was a great improvement from old, the food was good I can’t say more really, however the wine they now have was very good. Service was friendly and welcoming and the staff seemed busy with a quite a few in for dinner, be it the Government deal or just wanting to eat out. Will visit again sometime I’m sure. We wish everyone at the Swan great success in the future, as it is lovely to have somewhere to go and eat within walking distance of home.

It may look like your average village pub, but the Swan Inn - with its new owners - is anything but.With an all new menu offering a range of mouth watering starters, mains and desserts we were keen to see what the pub had to offer - and we were not dissapointed.The Sirloin Steak with Lobster Hollandaise Sauce, the Chicken Supreme and the House Burger were all superb - as were their desserts - the Dark Chocolate Brownie served with a blood Orange Sorbet and the Affogato with Cantuccino Biscuits, really great food - well presented and coupled with excellent service.Our family received a very warm welcome by the new owners, Geoff & Emma, and their staff - a very enjoyable evening at the Swan Inn - wishing the owners every success in the future - we will be returning.

We had the pleasure of being the first couple to be booked into the newly opened Swan Inn at Sturminster for dinner bed and breakfast. All of which was served at a friendly high standard. The rooms were modern, clean and tidy, breakfast was everything you could expect from a full English (Covid considered !!) The evening meal was designed around the chef using locally sourced ingredients to bring out new flavours.

Whilst visiting Sturminster Newton we called into this pub for lunch.Inside it is quaint and comfortable with an open fire. It is clearly popular with locals.Dogs are allowed.The lunch menu offers a great choice and you order at the bar. We did have the option to open a tab but decided to pay as we ordered.We chose lasagne with chips and salad plus a butternut squash and leak risotto. Drinks were poured at the bar.Food came reasonably quickly and was good, the risotto was particularly nice.Good visit and would return if in the area.

We had roasted brie and cranberry with fish and chips for main course. Very good value. Big portions great quality. Staff are friendly. And the pub looks beautifully decorated for xmas.

I was delighted to discover this traditional pub offering not just the odd vegan dish but a separate vegan menu. We weren’t all vegans, but ensuring the happiness of even one in the party is important. The welcome was genuine and the staff helpful. I enjoyed the bitter. One of us enjoyed the traditional fish & chip, I had the veggie burger with potato wedges, and our vegan went for one of the vegan soups and a dessert. We were all very happy either the food.

We contacted at very short notice for a large group booking of 17 people. This was accommodated at short notice. Everyone had the food they wanted. The waitress was very helpful and friendly. The food was great and not one person had anything negative to say about the meal or the service. Thanks very much.

Excellent location in the middle of this delightful town. Breakfast and good food served in the evenings. We arrived by bike on the nearby North Dorset Trailway that terminates in the town. We tucked the bikes away in a corner of the enclosed beer garden.

Service and food very good place reasonably busy food arrived promptly and on warm plates the only let down was my salad I don't call a bit of lettuce and some sun dried tomatoes a salad! Such a shame

Sunday lunch this week was not as good as usual. The nut roast was really awful - like wet stuffing wedged between 2 soft parsnips, not a nut in sight. Husband had scampi which was good but quite a small portion. What saved the day were the always lovely and attentive staff and the pretty sunny garden. I think we’d be tempted to try one of the other local pubs next time we cycle the Trailway.

The Swan Inn is noisy and congested, but still a good place for traditional pub grub. They also offer excellent, free wi-fi. The service is friendly and the food a bit above average. I would definitely go there again if I am ever back in Weymouth.

I wondered why the restaurant was empty. We have visited many times and enjoyed a lovely roast dinner, but today although the Beef was good and tender, the rest of the dinner was very tasteless, especially the red cabbage very bland, the whole meal was not very hot. Have they a new Chef?? Finally when paying the Bill, shock horror, a lot more than expected. How can anyone justify the price of £2.90 for a Can of Drink, previously I had a glass of water which I will order in future. Outragous!! That's if I will visit again - probably not, I don't like being Ripped Off! No wonder pubs and restaurants are closing, they deserve it!

Lovely, very Dog friendly local pub with good food and friendly staff. Staff made us feel welcome and came over with treats for our dog. We ate there nearly every night. 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶🍻🍻👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

We had one lunch and one evening meal at The Swan and stayed for the pub quiz afterwards. Food and service good. Steak was cooked perfectly and I can recommend the little man burger which is huge! Hubby enjoyed the fish and chips. Pub quiz was great fun. Wish I could give a 4.5 but the site won't allow half marks - the only deduction being for a clearly shop bought mix of salad under the beetroot and goat cheese salad, which was a bit boring and underwhelming. Otherwise, really good!

Having moved to Sturminster 11 months ago we have eaten in the Swan many times and sampled most of the menu but never tried the Sunday Roast until today .. 2 courses for £14 saw a full plate of well cooked roast beef, Yorkshire pudding and all the trimmings placed before us followed by a fruity crumble desert with custard..good value and well cooked dinner..great hosts and attentive staff ..recommended.

Have eaten here before, but not stayed overnight. Our room was most comfortable and reasonably priced. Four of us had dinner, all had different dishes, and all were excellent, served by very friendly and efficient staff.

We stayed in Sturminster Newton on our holiday. We visited this pub every afternoon for a drink after walking our dog. And also had a couple of lovely meals in the evening. Everyone was very friendly. And if was a bonus for us we could take the dog too.

Greeted warmly, great explanation of do's and dont's, escorted to room, had only room facing own car park, all other rooms face main street and can be noisy come closing time. MIND YOUR HEAD we were told as we entered room, actually no problem, was coming out. Family run with everybody trying to make your stay as comfy as possible. Excellent nights sleep on a good bed, breakfast cooked to order with pride. Evening meals can be taken in the restaurant or within the bar.
