Living locally we use Thomas The Baker fairly often and find their rolls tasty and good value for money- their Wensleydale Cheese and chutney roll is my favourite. Staff are friendly. Would recommend.

My wife popped out to grab some lunch for the family and went the store at haxby, one item was a chicken bake for my daughter, after sitting down for lunch she came through to the kitchen and complained that she did not like as there was nothing in it, I said that I would get her something else and that I would have it, I took a bite and agreed instantly that there was nothing in it!, pictures will explain

Came in today around 2pm for bits for a group of us, hardly anything in the counter which was fine as I heard one of the girls tell another customer they had been busy all day. One lady asked if there was any sausage rolls to which the woman behind the counter replied in a very rude tone "no, I've been on my break and haven't had time to put any in". The same lady served me and while I asked for the first 2 things then the 3rd she scoffed at me because I was taking the last 2 of something, she said once again in a rude tone something about only having 1 oven on and she was going to have to put more in, to which I replied "oh I'm sorry do you not want me to buy them" which was met with well it's just I've been here since 6.30 and it's been very busy. Well I'm very sorry lady, we all have busy days at work but there is no need to be rude about it. If I didn't have hungry mouths at home all doing a big gardening job I would have left and gone somewhere else. I could even get the name of the lady as she wasn't wearing a name badge.

Bought a ham, cheese and mango sandwich for lunch but could not taste the mango so opened up to see where it was … a small scraping on the end I hadn’t tried yet! This is the second ham cheese and mango sandwich I’ve had - had the same issue a few months ago with the first one but was hoping that was a poor one-off and that this second one would be the real thing but obviously not. When next in the shop and seeing it was quite empty I had a quiet word with an assistant about the lack of mango only to be told that it won’t get any better as all the sandwiches are calorie counted so no extra mango can be added! I didn’t realise there is now a law governing sandwich filling amounts, or is it just that Thomas’s are unwilling to add more and rewrite their product descriptions? Trades description laws come to mind. In any event I won’t be paying the high sandwich prices for such low content and lack of customer service in future.

What??!! Tuna & Celery sandwiches?? Yuk! (I despise celery) I’d love a tuna mayo sandwich with just lettuce, tomato or onion. Sadly, they don’t do them - how very strange! The rest of their products are very nice. If you rid your shop of celery, your business would increase dramatically 👍😀

Wanted to say thank you to the member of staff in the Leyburn bakery. I just popped in, late in the day, hoping for a sandwich. I got great service from a really helpful and friendly member of staff. Great, fresh sandwiches and a lovely bakery with so many delicious things. So glad I went in.

This bakery is full of some lovely produce, perfect for anyone wanting a packed lunch. However, they have an almost zero approach to flexibility - fancy a sandwich with a bit of pickle on that isn't pre made and you have no chance....the staff were busy, and yeah, flexibility can sometimes be a pain.... but that's the difference between a customer coming in once a week or five times a week....

When the while country seemed to have run out of flour and yeast Thomas the Baker was there to save the day. They bagged up their own flour and yeast and sold it to customers. The Country crunch granary flour is great and makes a fabulous loaf. I will definitely be going back for more and to try the chocolate orange Danish which looks lush!

Went to Thomas the bakers on our way to York and decided to pick up some breakfast buns for the whole family. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful. COVID-19 restrictions in place made us feel safe. Staff gave us directions in shop. I highly recommend the sausage breakfast bun

When in with friends after a nice walk to get some sandwiches due to the sign catching our eye,as we walked in we were not greeted by anyone no staff seemed to be on the shop floor, upon choosing our sandwiched and deciding what else we would like, and when we were ready we seemed to be waiting a while to be served, and eventually when we did get served by the lady with slightly reddish hair and glasses,we never got greeted politely seemed to have a bit of a attitude, and when we told her what savoury things we like it seemed to be such a effort in going to grab the items,we got a selection of sandwiches and savouries we grabbed our stuff and walked out and went and sat in the car to the most dissapointing food, sandwiches they did not have enough filling in them and seemed to have to much bread and non existant filling for the price it seemed to pricey for what or shall I say for not what we got,my friend had a cheese and onion bake which to my horror was not fresh as it was stone cold and pastry hard, and a Cumberland wrap which I never had before and was looking forward to it but again to the horror the actual sasuage was pink in the middle that put me off and went straight in the bin ,pink sausages are a no go,the whole food bought was a waste of money tesco had more filling in the sandwich than Thomas ,would not recommend going, staff need to learn to smile and not leave a shop floor unattended, and seriously think about filling there sandwiches for the price of them.

We called to have some sandwiches made up and but local pies on the way to The Forbidden Corner. The food, pies, quiche, pasty’s and sandwiches were lovely, shame about the lady who served us, she had forgotten her manners and never said please or thank you. Such a shame as this was a return trip after many years and i’s told my friends how nice the pies were. Not a good advert for Layburn, we chose to buy local and we were obviously an imposition for this lady!

Visited as a couple 7 March. We were staying in the hotel. Ambience was good. The eating area could perhaps do with a bit of updating but it is fine. Menu is a mix of pub classics and more adventurous dishes. I had one of the latter as a starter, Lamb Tagine Roll with harissa mayo and smoked aubergine purée. Very good. The roll had chunks of lamb and the mayo had a kick. Tasted and presented very well. I had steak and ale pie for main. Appeared home made with real chips. Again very good Mrs W had the pork belly which she enjoyed too. We had a very nice bottle of NZ Sav Blanc as well. Very good value.

What amazing staff?! The two lovely girls that served my family and I were absolutely FANTASTIC! So attentive and generous and fun! Genuinely some of the best service I’ve ever experienced in a restaurant! I’m so upset that I don’t know their names, but — management: the two ladies working on Weds the 29th (evening of) were amazing!!!! Thank you for a lovely night! :)

And so - Myself and my Wife found ourselves “out on a limb” - Christmas Day- Our two Daughters had other plans. To avoid being on our own on Christmas Day, we booked ourselves into a nearby hotel with our beloved Cindy (Cocker Spaniel). And so Christmas Day came and we arrived at the Durham Ox to a simply Fantastic Welcome - Complimentary Whiskey or Baileys. The day just got better !! Every stranger was a friend we just hadn’t met. The range and quality of drinks simply brilliant. The food “to die for” !! Jimmy - I committed to you that I would respond to the fabulous friendship and hospitality that you gave to myself and my Wife. We couldn’t wish anything other than our best wishes to you and yours. very friendly staff and food was beaut, large York is pudd with belly pork (and plenty of) and steak pie and mash, can’t beat good old British fodder, so much so we came back on Sunday to try the carvery, and again was not disappointed, again friendly and welcoming staff, and a Sunday carvery that made me think my mum was in the kitchen.
