First time here and was having a girlie's Xmas lunch. Wasn't expecting much as at this time of year pubs tend to lower standards. However I was pleasantly surprised. The food was delicious. Although it was packed the service was still good and we had a nice table and view. Its set in a lovely little village so you will need a car but there is ample street and car parks. The afternoon tea looked lovely so we intend to go back for that in February.

We stayed one night for bed, breakfast and dinner. The room was a good size with all that is required in both bedroom and bathroom. The evening meal that we had booked was the Festive Fayre, three excellent courses, the main being huge. Delicious food, reasonably priced wine and great service from all the staff. Breakfast was multi choice and freshly cooked to our wishes. Only ten minutes drive from Durham park and ride, so very convenient. We would definitely book here again when next in the area. Highly recommended.

Went with friends for christmas fair. Started with prawn cocktaiI ( 5 prawns in a tiny glass with a bit lettuce and a blob of Marie sauce, had to ask for bread and a bun for one soup. Never got a bun and waitress bought 1 slice of bread cut into 4. I had beef and others had turkey (both very dry) cold yorkshire pud 1 parsnip, 2 small roasties, 1 tablespoon of mash on plate with a bit gravy. veg was bought in a small dish. It consisted of 3 small bits of cauli, 2 pieces of broccoli, 4 new pots, and a few carrots between four people. xmas pud was a joke too (2 bites) and a tbl sp of brandy sauce. I wish i had taken photos For the price we paid It was very poor, and If i was booked in for xmas day i would cancel

We have enjoyed many meals at The Three Horseshoes but it’s time to try somewhere new. A very basic Christmas meal……Turkey without the trimmings! No cranberry sauce no stuffing no roast parsnips ……minimal veg plate to share between 6 adults Many requests for more gravy ……..did not arrive Many requests for wine that eventually arrived however we were charged for all of the requests when the wine was not received!

Eight of us ate here on a Saturday evening. We usual struggle to find somewhere which we all enjoy but succeeded with the Three Hotseshoes! The menu was extensive with plenty of choice for everyone in our party. We all very much enjoyed our meals including the kids. The food was decent value for money and the portion size was just right - enough for a bigger appetite like mine but not so much as to leave you feeling unpleasantly full. The food and drink were served efficiently by the friendly and attentive staff. There was a choice of 3 or 4 real ales. We tried a couple and they were both very drinkable! We would certainly return here again. Highly recommended!

First visit today. Called in without booking and were seated quickly. The decor is lovely and the large dinning area we sat in was bright and airy and although it was busy, we didn't feel crowded. The staff were pleasant and attentive without being intrusive. There was a lot to choose from, the regular menu, a lunch time menu and light bites as well as specials. Our food arrived quickly and was very good. The portions were generous but not so big that we couldn't manage pudding, which is a good thing as the crumble was delicious. The price was reasonable for two courses and drinks. We'll definitely go again.

The carrot was honey roasted, but the rest was plainly cooked. Overall great meal and we would come back 👍🏼

The three horse shoes has sadly lost its charm and character in the pursuit of more customers. It's warm and friendly still, but lacks the rural pub feel it once had. The staff are friendly and helpful, if not slightly in need of increasing in professionalism in respect of their clothing. We were provided with a number of menus which honestly is just not needed. Shabby paper inserts of lunch deals, specials etc, have created an extended menu I suspect the chefs and staff can't keep up with. Quantity over quality appears to be the current mantra. There are lots of options and most tastes catered for, though the vague attempts at meat free options remain sparce and lack lustre. Now to the food. My husband had his standard fish and chips. It's his go to choice and you can rarely go to far wrong, right? Wrong! The chips were ok, lacking in seasoning and flavour, but reasonable portion and nicely cooked. That's where the positives for his plate end. There was a ramkin of the most bright forest green peas I've ever seen. I'm assured they tasted fine, but I can't express how disconcerting it is to see such bright green peas. I can't fathom how that's happened short of adding some kind of colouring. The fish on the other hand was a shade of magnolia, perhaps grey, but most certainly anemic. Perhaps it was the colour of the peas next to it that dulled it's colour, but in any event it was less than appetising. It was soft and mushy with excess water seeping from the fish. I ordered Welsh rabbit and I was rather excited about it. I found the concept of egg on top a little strange but why not. Sadly I've yet to get my Welsh rabbit as what I received instead was simply cheese on toast. Not even good cheese on toast I might say, it was very basic flavourless orange cheese on a doorstep of bread that had been waved under a grill. The egg was a poached to perfection, but again lacked flavour. It came with a side of salad which was wilted and sad, yet ironically did have a nice mustard dressing on, and chips which again would have benefitted from a brief introduction with seasoning. For this and 2 cokes we paid almost £30. Overall I wouldn't recommend. It's off the beaten track so not somewhere I'd go out of my way for and sadly even if it were I still wouldn't go again. It's gone from a nice gastro pub to a waiting room for those about to depart this plain of existence who appear to prefer their food bland, lacking in texture and easy to swallow. It needs to skim down the menu and concentrate on having flavourful plates of food before I'd consider going back.

It's just not nice. I wouldn't recommend the prawn cocktail. Having not been for a while, decided to call in after a day in Durham. The car park looked busy, but we were shown to a table immediately. Decided to go for the roast, which is on the menu all the time even though it was a weekday & my companion ordered the fish & chips. The beef was lovely, very tender & a fairly decent amount. The yorkshire pudding was as most pub yorkshires, tough & fairly inedible. The disappointment were the vegetables- one floret of broccoli, 2 slivers of carrot There was a spoonful of mash on the plate with a couple of 'roast' potatoes. However, can't mark it down because on paying for the meals they deducted 20% off the bill because we had ordered between 5.00 & 6.30 p.m! Come on Horseshoes, veg isn't expensive & why spoil the ship for a ha'porth of tar.

I came with my sons for Sunday lunch. I called in advance to check that they served a gluten free option & was assured that they did. On arrival the waitress looked baffled by my request for a GF menu, I was told the chef would make any of the roasts GF. When the lunches arrived my plate looked like a child’s serving, I had half of what my sons had. The only thing that was GF was the gravy, they didn’t serve any roast potatoes, stuffing or any other accompaniments. I had meat, carrots & mash potatoes. I was charged the same price as a normal roast but for half a portion. Total rip off, will not be returning.

Booked due to proximity to station and the city so it is ideally located. Was left with the choice of a twin or family room. Only two of us so chose the twin. On arrival after a wait at the bar we paid for the room prior to seeing it and were then shown up a very steep and grubby staircase to the room by a charming young lady. We were only shown to the door and went in on our own. Spacious room with en-suite. Upon entering the en-suite we were immediately struck by the amount of black mould around the sealant of the shower, holes in the back panel of the shower and shower doors hanging off their runners making it impossible to close properly. We mentioned this when we went downstairs to the lovely staff but nothing was done. The rest of the room was tired and grubby, dust on high surfaces (the vent in the bathroom was thick with dust) flaking paint, a tv aerial sellotaped to the window the frame of which was filthy. The curtain was thick and of good quality but the pelmet was stained. The beds squeaked. At 0125 we were awakened by noise outside which died down after 0300 so we got some sleep. Due to having had sn enjoyable evening out in the city I was quite prepared for this review to be saved by breakfast. That did not happen. Breakfast was self service yoghurt, a few mini boxes of cereal and some sunblest bread in its’ polythene bag with which to make toast. No butter, some jams from cash and carry and an urn with which to make poverty grade tea or instant coffee. All this for £110.00. Having run a B&B we know what standards should be and this was immeasurably poor value. I suppose the proximity to everything sells it but all I can do is advise against being swayed by convenience, treat yourself to a clean room and a good nights sleep and book a Travel Lodge. It’s a great pity as the staff are nice, location is brilliant and it could be so good instead of so bad with just a little application of effort and reasonable standards. And some working power points in the room would be useful.
