I have no idea why I gave this place 4 stars last time. I edited my verdict. Well deserved 5, amazing place.

So happy we got to come back to this place where we had our first trip abroad back in 2005/2006. The food is still very good with rare quality given the low prices, even though Japanese food has become quite mainstream in the meantime.

Amazing food, kind staff, amazing atmosphere. Lovely place!

Easily the best, most authentic Japanese food I have eaten outside Japan. The tonkatsu teishoku (pork cutlet set box) was rich and varied, and contained items many other, less ambitious Japanese restaurants would leave out. The place is small but not cramped, and the service excellent. The tasteful décor is something you could find in Japan, and not overdone Japonisme. It is a rare restaurant that leaves guests slightly disoriented upon leaving the place — why am I now suddenly in London? So complete was the immersion of tastes, visuals and sounds that I thought myself in Japan again.

What a lovely experience from beginning to end ☺️ They serve you hot green tea when you are seated at the table (I really liked it’s flavor and they even give you refills). The katsu curry was super delicious as well as the udon noodle soup. Their menu feels like it’s written by a friend, full of cute little tips and details about the dishes. Don’t miss this cozy japanese place! We will be back for sure

I had the chicken katsu don, portion sizes were generous and the service was excellent. The dish was slightly lacking in flavour and more expensive than alternatives but would still recommend for authentic Japanese meal.

We had to queue up during peak hours and waited for about 20 minutes. The waiters were all Japanese and did not charge service fees or tips, but the service was not sloppy. They provided a small plate of rice crackers and hot tea for free before the meal. I ordered soba noodles and sesame seeds. The spinach is delicious, and the price is very affordable in Chinatown, London!

Much respect to this restaurant for being the only place (that we found) that did not jack up its prices on Xmas day. Staff was very friendly and service was prompt. We ordered the curry udon and beef don which are both authentic and value for money.

Very delicious food In addition, there is free Japanese tea, which is refilled when the waiter notices an empty cup or when we ask. A bit little space inside.

Irecently tried chicken katsu curry, and it was fantastic! The portion size was generous, leaving me completely satisfied. The dish was flavorful, with perfectly crispy chicken and a rich, savory curry sauce. The hospitality was top-notch, making the experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend it!

Everything was absolutely perfect! We came across this restaurant by chance and pleasant surprise!! We recommend it with our eyes closed, the food was excellent, the waitresses very nice. He doesn't take cash but it's written on the door so no worries.

A fantastic little Japanese restaurant where the waiting staff speak Japanese, the food is authentic and very oishii... Tasty. Prices reasonable for this part of town, definitely worth a visit. Tips are not encouraged but if left are donated to St. Martin in the field homeless charity, which is lovely for the local community. Food is well presented, decent portions and friendly staff. I will definitely come again.

Tried the katsu don and the chicken katsu curry. While curry was okay, the katsu don was delicious. Portion sizes were handsome. The staff were friendly and provided prompt service. I'd love to go back and try some sushi next time.

I had lunch there yesterday and have been highly disappointed. The salmon bento was blend so where my soba needles and one of my guest had a tofu dish that was blend. Sad that hat the experience was not what I was expected.

My favourite place to go as a GF person. The food is always perfect and freshly made, the owner is really kind and the price is really good for this quality. This was my third time will go again when in London

Very quick and polite, efficient service. Food exactly as described and good value. We had Donburi and a Bento with teriyaki chicken. The soba soup noodles looked very popular, will try them next time.

Truly exceptional cuisine. I had a curry udon noodle soup, the best I've ever had. Typical Japanese restaurant atmosphere. Served quickly. The staff is very honest, they even refuse tips (considering that it is not part of their culture).

Very cute little diner. In my opinion, probably the best spot in China Town. Authentic cuisine for an unbeatable price. Plus free green tea that you can always get refilled :)

Taken downstairs where there is a tiny room with people squashed together, no atmosphere, food was mediocre at best..

This is my fourth time here and I usually order the oyakodon (egg/chicken rice) but I decided to try the katsu curry instead. It’s very authentic! I had some 5 pound salmons off cuts (worth it!), would always recommend the edamame. I want to go back tomorrow for more oyakodon lol

Excellent Japanese restaurant in Chinatown. Bento box was fabulous and didn’t feel rushed to pay/leave like other places nearby! Warm sake was very good too.

First time here. I had a salmon donburi. Unfortunately, the rice was too warm which warmed up to salmon. It was OK. I have had better. The decor was authentic and service was quick.

So good, the place looks so authentic and everything has explanations. The portions are good, I couldn't finish it and the price seems reasonable. I was a bit confused about the entry and if I should just enter or wait to be called 😬 as there was nobody outside at that moment that I could see, but somebody was paying.

Tokyo Diner and Kiku (Mayfair) are the perfect duo in London for those who have had the chance to visit Japan and know what it’s like to have a proper good Japanese meal. Tokyo diner is much more affordable, though. Try their Age Dashi Tofu! Wonderful!

My first time here after having wanted to try for a long time. Had sashimi (£15) and salmon offcuts (£5) and they're fresh and great. The pork katsu curry rice was delicious. Japanese tea was offered for free and it tasted good too. Will definitely come back. The service is great and quick.

Japanese people seem to use cruel words no matter where they are in the world. Do not gossip about customers while working. The food was ok, but different from the Japanese taste.

Not authentic and quite disappointed. Am surprised how it has so many reviews and good ratings but then i realised it’s just the location and you’ll see that no one asian eats there. Will not visit ever again. Shocking.

The sushi is still good but not the best, mine nigiri were too cold, probably because stored in fridge some hours before Despite all the staff is japanese, is a little rude and not so friendly as a real japanese style, but still ok

Great atmosphere and service! The chicken Kara-agé was great so was the soup noodles broth, sadly the extra chicken pieces were bland and slightly cold. Extra rice is free for curry and there is no service charge. Great place nonetheless!

Found this place by accident walking through China Town. What a hidden gem! I ordered the soba noodles and veggie sushi and hubby ordered katsu curry and chicken. Big portions, decent prices, and warm atmosphere. Loved the Jasmine tea as well. Next time I’m in London I’ll definitely go back.

Excellent service. Good ambience. Such a shame that Tamago Don was below average. It was not authentic Japanese rice. They don’t accept tips and larger portions are free on rice dishes.

Delicious! I was so happy to find a traditional Japanese restaurant. There's usually a line outside, but we were lucky and moved fast, honestly,I don't care would do this like again and again!

Exquisite traditional japanese restaurant. When popular it’s a bit of a wait outside, but it definitely is worth it. We had the Curry Katsu and the Chicken teriyaki, with 2 hamachi nigiris on the side. Everything was just delicious, perfect rice. Of course they are going to give you free green tea when you arrive :)

We ate this noon. It's a different and super cool place. We loved the food. Very healthy and very good price. It surprised me. We ordered sushi, tuna tataki (it was incredible) and the price was really surprising €61 for 3 people. I recommend it 100%. Mandatory stop if you go to London. One of the best Japanese restaurants I've ever been to.

Eating for less than 20 pounds in London and eating well is a fantasy. Tokyo Diner is a place run by Japanese people that is managed in a Japanese way (no tips, you can ask for extra rice, they give you free tea when you sit down). The katsu curry is rich and filling.

Best Katsu curry in London! Fast service and reasonable price. Nice touches such as complimentary tea. We enjoyed loads of food so spent £40 a head with drinks though if you’re having a regular meal probably spend around £20. I was surprised by the fast service, cheap, and delicious food! Katsu curry is a Japanese curry served with a crispy cutlet! The sushi is also delicious so I highly recommend it!

Authentic Japanese cuisine in London

I have taken numerous people to the restaurant over many years. The staff are polite and helpful. The tea is exceptionally drinkable, the food very reasonable, a nice calm atmosphere, it's clean. I almost always end up with the curry which I love and because I don't get to come to London very often now, if I am very very hungry with Tofu (the portion of Tofu is large). I have been very comfortable eating here alone.

I really wanted to love this as it was highly recommended by a friend. I did enjoy the atmosphere, and the servers were very polite. Upon arrival I was welcomed with hot tea and a small bowl of crackers. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy the food and found it bland and forgettable. I might come back and try a few other dishes, but not any time soon.

A surprise Saturday afternoon find. All we wanted was a quick, hearty meal and not pay the ridiculous tourist prices of Chinatown. This ticked all boxes. A friendly welcome to a clean restaurant- actually it reminded me a bit like a cafe - but don’t want to under rate the venue. We were served promptly and very pleased with our choices of the noodle broths. Along with one side of crispy chicken. I’ve lived in London all my years and must have walked past Tokyo diner many times - and not really noticed it. Will definitely recommend and be back again
