Beautiful gallery designed by Charles Harrison Townsend (1851-1928) in Richardson Romanesque style. Three great exhibitions: Lygia Clark (1920-1988), Sonia Boyce (born 1962), and Peter Kennard (born 1949). Clark started off as an abstract artist, influenced by Mondrian, van Doesburg, El Lissitzky, and Mies van der Rohe. Later she became a distinctive performance artist. Boyce's exhibition focuses on performances influenced by Clark, while Kennard is an irrepressible graphic artist with an acerbic wit and some unforgettable images.

One of the most slept on galleries in London. Please visit! Every exhibition I’ve been to has been superbly curated. Always dealing with relevant issues and not being afraid to speak truth to power. They also put on great events so give them a follow to stay updated. It’s the perfect size and doesn’t feel too overwhelming, which means you can take your time and still go through the whole gallery. The book shop is a little delight and I could spend hours in there. Keep doing what you’re doing 👏

I recently visited Whitechapel Gallery in East London, and it was an enriching experience. The gallery is a hidden gem, showcasing an excellent selection of contemporary art in a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The exhibitions were diverse, ranging from cutting-edge installations to thought-provoking visual art, and I was particularly impressed by the variety of mediums and artists featured. The space itself is bright and open, with plenty of room to move around and engage with the artwork. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, providing great insights into the exhibitions. I also enjoyed the café in the gallery, which offered a nice place to relax after exploring the exhibits.Overall, I highly recommend Whitechapel Gallery for anyone interested in contemporary art. It's a great place to discover new artists and enjoy a well-curated art experience in a less crowded setting.

MORE AT Google

It was established as early as 1901. The original purpose of its establishment was "bring great art to the people of East London". I think the "East London" here may imply the meaning of "East End of London", and for a hundred years, Whitechapel Gallery The audience of art promoted and introduced has far exceeded the scope of East London. It has its place in the introduction and promotion of works of many major emerging art schools. Although the current Whitechapel Gallery may have already played a role in the promotion of emerging art in London. Not the most pioneering, but its historical status and consistent display of high-quality modern works make it a must-visit for anyone visiting London who likes emerging art. In addition to the exhibition, another attraction of the Whitechapel Gallery is the building designed by Townsend, one of the representative architects of Art Nouveau in the UK. The appearance is quite eye-catching, and the interior space is also very popular. I especially like the simplicity. An elegant stairwell. There was originally a Michelin-recommended restaurant Townsend in Whitechapel Gallery (the name must be a tribute to the architect). Unexpectedly, it suddenly closed down without warning recently, which is really disappointing. There is also a small bookstore on the first floor of the Gallery. The books inside seem to have a magical power that makes people unable to resist buying one. The geographical location is another big advantage. It is right next to the entrance of Underground Aldgate East station, almost to the point of being co-constructed. Overall highly recommended to art lovers visiting London

Whitechapel Gallery never fails to inspire. An unplanned visit, escaping from a hot Sunday afternoon saw me discovering the work of Peter Kennard - I didn't know the name, but recognised so many of the images, and even have some of his posters on my wall! All for free. I also discovered the work of Dominique White - amazing 'sculptures' inspired by a 6 month residency in Italy, researching, exploring new techniques, with strong links to the sea and escape from colonial influences. ( my inept interpretation) A fascinating video accompanies the exhibition, documenting the Italian trip and her thought processes. Wonderful!

I've visited a few times over the years. Usually interesting, mature content. This time, a few weeks ago, a lot of content was created by children, whilst other content was more about streetscapes. There were lots of older, mature visitors, so it's not a trashy modern gallery, but the content on display on this visit was a little underwhelming... but it will no doubt soon be replaced by different content on a different theme. Friendly staff, decent toilets.

Think two of the finest collections I’ve seen: zineb sedira her life story told through movies, movie sets and dance - tracing back a difficult Algerian history in Paris with a resistance theme and sofas to sit on : movies to watch with Algerian scatter cushions. Then also andrew pierre hart - some exquisite oil paintings in his “bio data flows and other rhythms” show. Beautiful.

Hopped off Aldate East tube and straight into Whitechapel gallery, no queues. We opted to view the exhibition by local school children. Free access and beautifully displayed. My SEN son was captivated, very accessible and we spent a solid hour looking at the exhibition and the acconpanying resources which sparked 2 purchases from the well stocked bookstore downstairs ( even if you don't have time for an exhibition visit the bookshop is worth a look). Our only disappointment was the staff. I used to work at the Ikon Gallery Birmingham ( always worth a visit) and we always offered a welcome on entrance and more info on displayed work if visitors wanted more engagement. We were not spoken to our whole visit except when I had to interrupt a staff conversation in the bookshop to make a purchase. Not very friendly , somewhat aloof.....it didn't spoil our visit but neither did staff enhance it.

Upon discovering 2 bits of curly hair on my food at this Turkish Cafe Shop, immediately went to the cashier section to complain. The owner, Immediately after discovering the evidence on the plate, swept it off with his fingers, making them disappear of the plate, so that the colleagues couldn’t see, pretended to not see anything and made it look like I was looking to obtain free food ( since the discovery was made around 70% into the consumption of the meal) . Argument for a refund was not successful, although £10.50 (cost of production around £2-3) is a miserable and pathetic amount to argue for. The shop owner has decided to lose a more or less regular customer ( visited the establishment more than 8 times in the last 6 months) forever than to refund £10.5. It shows the desperate measures the owner is ready to take during the non busy January and February months. Extremely pathetic, disgusting and immoral ownership, disguised by two younger more or less livelier front of house staff members.
