I have visited this pub for many years and now find that the meals and staff are hit and miss. My wife used to love the homemade pie and now that is non-existent. Such a lovely pub that should be packed to the brim but have noticed over the last year the car park is never full like previously.

This place never fails, always excellent service, cosy restaurant and plenty of food on the plate. Love the steak pie, probably my favourite. Can't fault the prices either. They also do the best Yorkshire pudding in Northumberland.

We have been coming here for food for over a year now. The food is outstanding and the hospitality second to none. If you want great food and nice atmosphere where nothing is a bother then get yourself here. The owner is also very friendly and kind. We have a couple of caravans at Cresswell we hire out and always recommend to our guests to book. They also thank us for recommending as enjoyed the food as much as we do.

Whenever we are up near Morpeth we always make a point of going for Sunday Lunch to The Widdy Inn, and never fails to satisfy. The portions are large, or if you have a modest appetite you can choose a smaller plate. The doors open at midday, and there is no pre booking, so first come first served The staff are always happy and motivated to help. Ave price for 4 would be around £75 depending on drinks etc.

AS A GROUP OF 9 WE ORDERED OUR FOOD AT 6.15 WHILE WATCHING OTHER TABLES BEING SERVED AHEAD OF US WE BECAME EVEN MORE HUNGRY AS THE FOOD LOOKED DELICIOUS. HOWEVER WHEN WE ASKED HOW LONG WE HAD LEFT TO WAIT THE CHEF CAME OUT OF THE KITCHEN AND INSTEAD OF APPOLOGISING FOR THE WAIT HE PROCEEDED TO ARGUE WITH A MEMBER OF OUR FAMILY AND WAS VERY RUDE. OUR MEAL WAS SERVED AT 7.05 PM AND THE SOUP WAS COLD AND CHICKEN OVER COOKED. THE SERVICE FROME THE OTHER STAFF WAS FINE BUT I THINK THE CHEF NEEDS LESSONS ON CUSTOMER SERVICE . WE WILL NOT BE RETURNNG WHILE THAT CHEF IS STILL IN EMPLOYMENT!

Went to celebrate with family 9 covers,we waited almost 45 minutes, when asked how much longer it would take the chef came to table with attitude and didn't even apologise for the wait we had seen other customers arrive after us and served well before us,the table and bar staff where not at fault,if the kitchen staff can't handle a table of 9 then the booking shouldn't have been taken,it spoilt the whole evening .

Service was appalling. Waited over 50 mins for our meal. Complained to no avail. The Chef came out with an angry head on, his attitude was shocking. Basically called us liars and offered no apology whatsoever for the delay. When the food did arrive, it was poor at best. My soup was congealed and cold, so sent it back. Would not return and certainly could not recommend it to anyone.

We have been hear quite a few times but this is the first in a couple of years. Because of Covid you had to book in advance. Met at the door by a staff member, complying with Covid rules, and reminded to either scan the QR code or complete the chit, on your table, for track and trace. Shown to table and drinks order taken. Drinks arrived shortly after and food order taken. Not long to wait for our food even though the place was fairly busy both inside and out. Plates had very good portions and the food, as always was excellent with everyone fully enjoying their meal. We all said we felt stuffed afterwards. Overall and enjoyable relaxed meal, in what felt like a Covid safe environment with quick service, good food and friendly staff.

We'd booked this because of its proximity to out holiday rental and my first impressions weren't great - the first thing that greeted us was an aroma of fried food and we had to wait a while before anyone approached us to take us to the table. The atmosphere was pleasant but more like a Weatherspoon's, Having said that, the food and wine were excellent - my husband said the pie was better than the one he had in a more upmarket place, and my belly pork was well cooked if served with a rather strange, over-sweet toffee apple sauce. The pub appears to be popular and I can see why, though I prefer more charm.

Meeting family whilst on a holiday in Northumberland so rang to book Sunday lunch and to confirm pub was dog friendly several weeks before travelling. Advised totally dog friendly by the lady on the phone so booked for 6 of us. When we arrived I was told we could not bring the dog in, lady in the restaurant was totally unhelpful, did not apologise for the wrong information given when booking, said we could not eat in the garden instead - despite them offering takeaway dinners which we would have ordered - but we were not allowed to have them to eat outside?? Waitress was totally uninterested in helping at all so one of us had to leave with the dog as it was too hot to leave her in the car. Extremely disappointing as the lunch was good for the people who could eat it - but one member of our party went home hungry!! Spoilt a long awaited family get together.

Had been waiting for this visit for months and as previously regular visitors had high expectations Visited for lunch , sat 20 mins before drinks order taken and a further 20 before they took food order and then half an hour before food arrived. Starters came out and familiar menu items were sub par and cold. The mains followed very quickly and were just ok , again cold and limp sweet potato fries and the fish was also very limply battered and greasy. The second drinks order we placed took 20 mins to arrive and wasn’t complete. After a two hour visit for two courses of food we couldn’t face the wait for desert so paid and left. The kitchen bell and telephone ringing unanswered really added insult to injury , total assault on the senses and unacceptable. The staff seemed really inexperienced and had not been trained properly , unable to clear table efficiently etc and while I had sympathy really the management should have had the basics covered. Bar was absolutely littered with empty used glasses yet the restaurant and bar was nowhere near fully occupied. Someone from outside came in to cancel their order as they had waited 40 mins for drinks and again not a huge volume of people to serve there either. Poor food , terrible service , awful atmosphere with doorbell constantly ringing , flies - there’s always a fly bothering us in there regardless of season and one last thing get some decent cutlery , it’s a small detail but I imagine people in prison get nicer cutlery to eat their meals with.

This was our first visit and we were warmly welcomed. The good bits:- The service throughout was very good - warm, welcoming and very efficient, even to the point of when ordering another drink the waitress knew exactly what we wanted without us uttering a word!- The starters were lovely - prawn & crayfish salad and camembert, and were just the right size. - As it was Sunday we opted for the roast. The meat was delicious. I ordered leg of pork which can be a bit iffy with, what I call, yucky bits but on this occasion it was lovely. My husband's lamb was, in his words "stupendous"!- What I did appreciate is that the waitress asked if we wanted extra gravy, which is always welcome, and she went out of her way to find me some apple sauce when I asked for it. The not so good bits:- When the mains came up it was a little overwhelming and there was too much food for the size of plate. I'm not complaining about the portion size as it definitely offered value for money, it was the difficult to navigate.- The "seasonal veg" consisted of carrots, broccoli and swede (which are some of my favourites), and peas (which are most definitely not!). There were also new potatoes and roast potatoes. - Frozen peas are not my idea of seasonal veg- Maybe the veg could be served in a separate dish so that there is sufficient room on the plate, and those pesky peas don't invade everywhere!- The roast potatoes were very disappointing and appeared to have been merely par boiled and whacked in the oven for 10 minutes. The dessert menu looked delicious but I couldn't have fitted it in!So even though I have a few criticisms, overall it was very good and I'm looking forward to returning to sample the rest of the menu.

Ordered a family Sunday lunch from The Widdrington Inn today as normal dining prevented due to Covid. This is only the second meal we've not cooked in the home since March so were all really looking forward to it, and we weren't disappointed. Shared 3 starters between 4 of us; prawns, black pudding and potato skins. All generous amounts and delicious - black pudding bon-bons unusual and cooked beautifully, not at all over-powering. Prawns came with warm crusty bread and crisp salad. For mains, two servings of pork, one beef, and veggie dish - sausages. The meat was as tender as it comes, and lots of it, served with nice selection of crisp veg, also in generous servings. Accompanied by plenty of rich gravy and stuffing for the pork. Good veggie sausages, nice flavour and juicy. Shared again for the desserts, 2 apple crumble and a lovely light sticky toffee pudding, all delicious, plenty apple in the crumble.Thought this was excellent value. In fact the excess beef and pork wil make sandwiches for supper, if we can find room for them!

As a local, I love the Widdrington Inn so I recommended to the family we should all go. The menu is not the one on the Website, but it is still an ok selection of food. The staff were not attentive, and at time very rude. Our cutlery was removed with our starter plates and wheb we asked for more for our mains, a staff member Zoe, actually sighed out loud. We then had to go to the bar to ask for Mayonaisse, met by another staff member who sighed at us. It wasn’t a busy night but the service was so slow, so we had to ask for someone to take our plates away (met by another sigh) we asked for more drinks (more sighs from staff) asked to see the dessert menu (sighs again) asked for someone to take our dessert order when after seeing the dessert menu we were left for 30 mins. The only member of staff who was polite, was a young chap, who was apologetic about his colleagues. Scottish girl behind the bar, we are sorry for putting you out and asking for drinks but after waiting ages we were thirsty, and sorry again for asking for more drinks halfway through our meal but the food made us thirsty. If the owner is reading this, your staff need a refresher course in customer service, and basically how to be nice and friendly to paying customers, instead of the customer feeling like an annoyance to staff when asking for food and drinks. We may return for food, but only if staff get the swift kick up the arse they desperately need. We were at the Widdrington Inn on Friday just gone

Our understanding of the law is that members of two households are able to meet together outside. Our family meal grouping comprised 1 adult with 2 children, the other 2 adults with 4 children. 1 adult from each family ordered, staff member aware that we were together, confirming that they only needed contact details from the first order. After an hour and a half setting together outside, our food started to arrive. With all the meals served, a lady came with our cutlery, stating the law was that no more than 6 could sit together, stating that some of us would have to move. We acknowledged what she had said but six hungry children wouldn't wait any longer to be fed, two in high chairs and one in a pushchair. We understood that the limit of 6 people applied to members of multiple households. Five minutes later, the lady returned to insist that some of us move, even though we had almost finished our food. We asked if the 'law' about maximum if six people was as stated on their two blackboards outside and were told that it wasn't. Three of us moved to separate tables to finish our meal. We thought that we were compliant with the law, the lady equally sure. If our hourly comprised 2 adults with 5 children, would we really have to eat apart?

Arrived at the pub, to be told we would have to wait for a table as they don't have as many tables to keep guests distant, which is perfectly fine. The waitress then came over to say she had found us a table, gave us the number but didn't lead us to a table, I had to ask the bar maid where it was. Sat down after reading the menu and had to ask for our order to be taken. Then waited 45 mins for 3 paninis. The staff were very unfriendly and rude. No staff were wearing masks, nor were the staff in the kitchen making the food!!Although they had stickers on the floor to stay socially distant, the staff just barged past customers including myself!Went up to the bar to pay, no member of staff acknowledged me for at least 5 minutes, whilst waiting 3 members of staff barged past me not even saying excuse me, with no masks on May I add. Popped into this pub on the way through Northumberland after a meeting in Scotland, regualr Tues. evening in the middle of Winter, wasn't expecting anyhting fancy, but in keeping with the usual Northumbrian pubs in small towns and villages I was sure to find a warm welcome, good ale and decent food...however, I walked in tofind a very small group of (im guessing locals) farmers sat around the table by the bar, all of which were wearing working boots covered in mud and to be frank the smell from each of them would suggest they had recently ran a marathon and not showered since, all of whom seemed to be enjoying a good drink before leaving to drive back to their homes...the service from the young ish barmaid was on the level of 'sorry ive interupted you' if you get it, and the food was very mid level for such a grand looking building. In future, ill drive past and continue on to a better pub/inn in the neighbouring town of Morpeth i think.

Been here a few time’s whilst in the area and it’s fast become my favourite pub for food. Rang before to see if they had room for Sunday dinner but the don’t take booking so we turned up around 1:30 and got seated about 15 mins later. The dinner was absolutely lovely, huge portions, I had lamb it as cooked perfect. We got extra jug of gravy included & offer of sauces.Didn’t sadly have room for pudding. The staff are really friendly and were working so hard they never stopped but we’re still polite.Great pub great food. Wish I lived closer but it’s an excuse for a drive out.

Four of us went for a meal in the evening, there was an issue with the booking as they were double booked however offered to seat us further around the bar. Service was friendly and when the food arrived everyone enjoyed it, they forgot not to put dressing on my salad but I ate most of it anyway. Food ordered was a smaller steak pie, fish and chips, a burger and the marinated chicken salad.

Had fantastic meals at Widdrington Inn tonight, homemade tomato soup with homemade rolls were rated by my friend as the best he had, had. The brucheta starter with tomato and goats cheese was so tasty and a good size. Two of us had the steak with peppercorn sauce, and it just melted in our mouths, very good quality and could not complain about them. The third person had the belly pork, again absolutely loved every bit on the plate. Excellent presentation, beautiful taste. Could not fit in a desert, but great choice. Thanks to the chefs, waitresses and bar staff, all very kind and welcoming.

My partner and me stopped off at this pub on our way home from Amble. The pub was inviting but as it was a nice sunny afternoon we decided to sit outside. The seating is typical bench-type picnic tables on the grass and directly outside the doors.

Regularly have an evening meal at the widdrington the reason being it is a pleasant building without door seating for the warmer days and is pleasantly decorated and comfortably furnished on the ibises. A good range of real ales. Primarily it has a dining area with table service after one has ordered at the bar. Food is excellent and most reasonless priced. The popularity of the establishment is echoed by fact it is best to reserve a table before leaving home

Fast and very friendly service, large portions of very good food. The steak and ale pie was particularly good and generous. We can see why it is popular. Busy with people of all ages, with several families with young children, all made to feel welcome.

We visited Widdrington Inn for a family meal and weren't disappointed. Generous size kids meals, I had the mixed grill (£20 and worth every penny) while my wife had the Widdy ale battered fish and chips. Big portions and very tasty food. Wish we'd had room for the home finished desserts. Would definitely recommend and will happily visit again.

Popped in for some soup after a long walk in the rain. Completely understand that they were busy serving Sunday roasts as it was Sunday , but it took 25 minutes for two servings of soup, and they came out with tiny bread rolls, which were lovely and fresh but not the homemade loaf as suggested. Soup was tasty but very salty. Liked the pub just wouldn't order soup again.

My wife and I booked a table here tonight and we were well impressed with both the friendly and efficient staff, as well as the gorgeous food. We both had steak and ale pie, which was tremendous. There was plenty on the plate, more than we would normally eat, but it would have been bad manners to leave any, as it was so lovely. My wife had creme brulee for sweet, which she thoroughly enjoyed and I had sticky toffee pudding with custard. The portion was very generous and it tasted spot on.I would recommend The Widdrington Inn to anyone who happens to be in the area, should they like excellent value for money.

This is an unbelievably busy pub on Sunday lunchtimes. Although frankly it is believable because the quality is so high, the quantity so big and the service excellent. I would normally by unhappy at having to wait 45 minutes for a table when I arrived at 2pm but it was well worth the wait. The three of us had smoked salmon fishcakes to start, full of flavour and served with a small salad and tartare sauce. The roast mains are amazing, a full plate for under £9. My chicken was so tender, seemed like it had been cooked in butter. The beef is apparently marinated in some way overnight to make it tender. Four different types of vegetables, a good Yorkshire pudding, three types of potatoes and decent gravy meant all the plates were overflowing. The service is super friendly but understated.

From the moment we booked a table, I walked in announce our arrival, to being served drinks, we were treated so well and professionally by all the staff. Even though they were busy costumer contact and updates were maintained. Once our choices were ordered the food was served promptly and with the due diligence it had been cooked and presented correctly. The portions are generous however if you want or need a doggy bag that is no problem. Everyone in our party of 6 enjoyed their meals. The waiting staff were polite, friendly and there when needed. Prices are very reasonable for the size of the meals. I would not hesitate to recommend this place and although we weren't from the local area, would certainly return. Re the negative comments, unsubstantiated in my view however as the Landlady commented as we left "you can't please all the people all of the time" Full tables I think speaks volumes. Great choice of ales including Hand pulled and Keg. 5 stars *****

My family and I have dined here a few times and always find it welcoming and friendly. Some times the place is busy and you have to wait for a table if dining. Menus are on the table, each table numbered, you make your choice and order and pay at the bar. Food normally takes around 15 minutes, if not busy, but can be longer if busy. Food brought to your table and staff make sure you have everything you want/need. Every time we have been the food is always hot, well presented and tasty with good size portions. The place is clean, including fresh smelling toilets, and the staff try to clear the tables as quick as possible. Sunday dinner time is normally busy with queues at the door for them opening and Xmas meals you have to book for as they are really busy then.

Stopped in for breakfast on the way to do a walk at Kielder. Loved the place. Fantastic , well cooked , quality breakfast. Decent size and good value at £10.50 including toast and a brew. Couldn’t fault the food. One of the best breakfasts we’ve had. Ticked all the boxes for us. Dog friendly. Liked Falstone so much did a walk from there instead of Kielder and came back to the Old School for dessert. Bread and Butter pudding with cream or custard ! Although I was tempted by the Old School sponge. Thank you for a lovely experience
