We got lucky with this place! It was rebuilt in 1667 and frequented by Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. How cool is that?? On top of it, the barista who at that night also wore the hats of server and bouncer, was very engaging. Got the traditional fish & chips. The interior looks as old as how it really is. Coming here gave us the actual British pub experience. Well done!!

Had the Cheshire Cheese rarebit appetizer, which was delicious, and the cod fish and chips. The chips were amazing but rather small in portion compared to the norm, but the cod was so tender and cooked to perfection. Loved the food, loved the service and the atmosphere was extraordinary. Dining at the same pub as Charles Dickens once did! It's a beautiful, beautiful spot- five stars

The place is beautiful and full of history, which makes it special. However, the service is very disappointing. The staff don’t seem trained, at times rude, and generally make you feel unwelcome. This matches what a lot of other reviews have said, and it doesn’t seem like much has improved. The ladies’ toilet seems neglected, with no investment put into it. It looks completely out of place. Additionally, the loaded fries are not worth the (high) price. The atmosphere could be improved with some music. It’s a pity because this place has so much potential, and I really hope things change soon to make it live up to what it could be.

Been looking forward to coming here for a while... However.... they seem to have a messed up system when it comes to reserving tables, we wanted to sit and have a quick drink next to the open fire in one of the most atmospheric rooms to warm up- it had a card on it that said it was reserved between 1200-1500for Bianca, fair enough but as it was now 1345 I asked the bar man of it was ok to sit there and that if Bianca arrived we would leave, he said ok and we sat to enjoy two beers. Everything was going ok until about 1430 when (who I assume) is a catering manager came in, she was giving the barman a telling off in full sight and hearing of the patrons - asking why we were sat there as the tables reserved and it's not us (the customer) who dictates where people sit - it's her and wed have to leave the table. I'm quite observant so I knew straight away she was talking about us, the barman came over and told us that bianca was there and the table was needed again (lies), it was 1430 by now and the reservation was only until 1500.. I was also frustrated as I'd by now noticed the table next to us was also reserved for 'Bianca' and the two gentlemen sitting there weren't asked to leave their seat (they were there prior to us arriving), the 'manager' obviously just wanted to flex her authority to the barman at out expense . Totally spoiled what was till that point a positive experience, we finished our drinks in the back room, left 10 mins later and the table we'd been asked to leave was still empty....

This is a gorgeous historic pub- pop in for a beer but the food and service is terrible, so plan to eat dinner elsewhere. The 3 waitstaff were more interested in chatting than providing service, and when they did, it was disinterested. The 10 quid g&t was delivered in a tall cheap glass, no ice (the ice machine was ‘broken’’) or garnish and no bottle of tonic, so not even sure what it was. The sirloin was cold and gristly and the bubble and squeak overseasoned with pepper and salt. Overpriced and extremely disappointing. I should have checked the TripAdvisor reviews before we had dinner here!

The place is charming and transports you to another time in London. The traditional food is delicious and meets expectations. However, the service left something to be desired. Despite having made a reservation in advance, we were assigned a small, crooked table in the corner, although we were later moved. In addition, they do not take notes at the table, but you have to order at the bar, which does not fit with the level of the restaurant. The waiters were somewhat distant. As a suggestion, background music would improve the experience.

I’m really disappointed about this restaurant, because initially I had a really nice opinion about the food and ambiance, but when the bill came out and I asked the waiter if the service charge meant a tip and therefore was not compulsory, he said no that it was for the restaurant and I had to pay it, when I just read UK law says otherwise. The reason behind this is that, in spite of the previously mentioned positive factors of this place, the service was very lacking: When we arrived we were the only costumers and they took around 20 minutes to even come to our table, then mentioned the most emblematic dishes of the menu were not available so they would give us more time to think, again 20 min went by and no one came so we asked another waiter (the one about what the service charge meant) and we finally got to order. Also, I really feel that not having prices on alcoholic drinks is not right and feels kind of sketchy. It’s really disappointing that just because we are tourists and don’t initially know the law we are subject to being taken advantage of like this, especially because we would have loved to go back since the food was so tasty.

We wanted to spend New Year's Eve on December 31 in a unique setting... What a disappointment! The food was good but very expensive (addition which hurts). We had reserved for 8:30 p.m. and when we arrived we were told that the kitchen closed in 30 minutes so we had to order quickly. There weren't enough dishes left so we made 2 dishes for 3... The very expensive cocktails were mediocre!!! At 10 p.m. we were told that we had to go down because the upstairs was closing... Sacred December 31st!!!

What a shame to treat such a jewel in the worst way! Terrible service and food, meaningless prices (107 pounds for two for a paltry piece of meat, a tasteless vegan dish, two beers, two glasses of unidentified white wine and two slices of bread). Around 9pm they told us to move to the rooms upstairs or downstairs because the restaurant was closing. We move to the cellar only to be kicked out half an hour later. I want to preface this by saying that this pub is beautifully decorated and a historical London landmark, like a traditional English tavern. However, that is the only positive aspect of this place. Firstly, the service was abysmal. We walked in, trying to find our table, but not a single member of staff was willing to assist us, despite our asking multiple times. When we eventually located our table, we were served by an Australian waiter who was attentive and helpful, despite the chaos that followed. Unfortunately, the two female servers who also attended our table were both rude and untrained. When we asked them to take our order, they outright ignored us. We ordered the mixed roast, but were informed they had run out of beef, so we opted for pork and chicken. Nearly an hour later, our food arrived—but to our surprise, there were no roast potatoes. When we asked one of the waitresses why the potatoes were missing, she responded aggressively, stating that they had run out. She added that if we wanted a replacement, we needed to specify how many we required—as though we were supposed to know this in advance. She then stormed off and sent over another waitress, who appeared completely clueless, struggling even to take our order properly. All we wanted was some potatoes. Eventually, the Australian waiter came through for us and brought chips as a replacement. However, they were utterly underwhelming—dry and clearly straight from the freezer to the deep fryer. The rest of the meal was equally disappointing. The meat was dry, and the pork was soggy and tasteless. A pitiful spoonful of red cabbage sat beneath the meat, accompanied by a limp carrot. It was dreadful. At this point, we simply wanted to leave. When we requested the bill, another waiter came to clear our plates. He seemed drunk and almost dropped the entire stack of our plates all over me. I would have loved to remove the service charge from the bill, but given the Australian waiter’s efforts, we decided not to. Desperate to leave, we paid up and left as quickly as possible. Please do not visit this establishment. The food is terrible, and the service is even worse. Don’t be deceived by the charming interior—it’s not worth it.

Very nice, rustic atmosphere, sat right by the fireplace. The pub is exactly how you would imagine an original English pub to be. The prices are acceptable for the location, but I also expect good quality. My wife's sirloin steak had such thick tendon running through it that half of the meat was inedible. We asked the staff about it and even showed the English translation of the word “tendon” on our cell phone, but we only received a shrug of the shoulders. Another waitress who was brought in couldn't, or didn't want to, understand what our problem was. The question about only paying for half of the steak was flatly rejected. We were offered to cancel the service fee. Unfortunately, removing a completely arbitrary flat rate is unacceptable for us in this case (€50 steak). In addition, I still expect professionalism and a nice and courteous farewell. The billing was finally done by another waiter and the original waitress didn't even look at us anymore. It's a shame, so despite the very nice ambience and delicious beer, I can't recommend it.

Found this spot on TikTok and had to check it out! If you love history and a good pint, this place is a dream. It’s tucked down a little alley (thank you, Google Maps), and walking in feels like stepping back in time. The pub’s been built in the 1500s, and it was rebuilt in the 1600s after the Great Fire of London; but apparently, the site goes all the way back to a 13th-century monastery. The cellar is the best part, with its stone walls and cozy vibe. Sitting there with a drink, you can’t help but imagine all the history that’s gone down here. The inside is way bigger than you’d expect, with lots of quirky rooms and low ceilings (tall people, watch your head). They’ve got some great beers on tap—no basic stuff like Carling, but more unique, local options. The food is actually really good too, which was a nice surprise. There’s some construction across the road, but honestly, it doesn’t take away from how cool this place is. Knowing that legends like Charles Dickens and Winston Churchill drank here just adds to the vibe. If you’re in London, this is one spot you don’t want to miss.

Iconic London pub. Slight shame it is a Sam Smiths, so you are beholden to their own brand of beer. They do have their own version of Guinness which was nice. The place does get hoards of tourists, so can get rammed. They also need to get a chimney sweep in the ground floor right hand bar to check the venting. This is a brilliant pub steeped in London history. The reason I have given 1 star is because of the ladies toilets. They were filthy! Out of 2 cubicles, 1 door would not shut, the Sanitary bin was overflowing, no toilet paper and the sinks were filthy. I spoke to the manager who said he couldn't go in so he would send a female member of staff in. This however, would not have sorted the Sanitary bin issue, you need to get your contract sorted. We visited on a Friday lunchtime so I'm sure the situation would not have improved over a busy weekend 10 days before Christmas. The other issue is that staff, will no doubt have to use these facilities and then serve customers. I've done over 700 Google reviews and have only ever given 1, 1 star review. I really hope that when we visit next, this has been sorted as I want to support the pub trade and this should be easily rectified. Come on Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

The pub is as atmospheric and historic as the food is bad. The food is not mediocre. It is bad. Fried squid £9.50 - six squid rings, frozen. Beef roast £23.95. I don’t doubt the roast was indeed “beef” - but it was surely taken from a part of the cow more normally employed in making shoes. Lovely fires, wonderful nooks and crannies. When we would request something simple—like vinegar with our salt and vinegar—it was met with a tense reaction, as though we were a massive burden to the staff. They rolled their eyes at us constantly, making us feel unwelcome and as if we were inconveniencing them by even being there. For £30 each for a main and a drink, I deeply regret spending my money here. I wish I could get that money back. Both were replaced with tartare (Not on the menu) I was told that no one liked it so they changed it to tartare Without changing the menu quite recently. The man then went into the kitchen to check If they had any smoky mayonnaise left, they did. When it turned up, it was Thousand Island dressing with salt in it. It had a tingly taste on the tongue which denotes going off.!! The beer squid rings with frozen (brake brothers has a lot to answer for) Hot but solid with the obligatory taste sauce. The cider was lovely. And for this they charge your service charge so beware.

We were very excited to come there as it is a historic pub but we were met with two waiters who did not seem to want to be there at all. Had to wait 20minutes for someone to take our drinks order and another 15 to take our food order (to which the waiter threw her notepad on the table for me to read if she had written it correctly). After waiting another 15minutes we received two thin slices of slightly warm bread with nearly frozen butter. Eventually we had to ask for our food order to be cancelled as we had been there for nearly an hour. Ended up going to a different pub after to make up for the lack of service received at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese.

Our dining experience at Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese this evening was extremely disappointing. We were served by a group of three waitresses. It took us 30 minutes, asking three times to receive some tap water. Similarly, it took an equal amount of effort for our order to be taken. Shockingly, one of the waitresses interrupted us during our main course by taking away the vinegar jar, saying, "You don’t need this," and immediately walked off. The appalling service continued as it took another 30 minutes of effort to get the waitresses’s attention to serve our pudding, despite them spending much of their time chatting in the kitchen area. We noticed another gentleman at the corner table, who had been seated before us, waiting over an hour for his fish to arrive. At the end of the meal, we had to walk into the reception near the staircase to request the bill. Even then, the waitress handed it off to a waiter, leaving us standing at the reception near the staircase waiting for our request to be addressed. While we must say the atmosphere and the food itself were excellent, the service was appallingly poor and hence a one star review.

In strong position as my 3rd favourite pub in London. Excellent character & atmosphere, particularly in winter. Does a good schnitzel and the pub is older than the USA

Fantastic old pub, coal fires, proper and a very city of London experience. Tourist or city worker you will love it. P.s. check out the history and the cellar!

We visited this place because of its history, as it is a pub that was frequented by Charles Dickens, as well as other literary celebrities. The atmosphere of the place is old London, the beers are good and so is the service. We found the food a little expensive, but my companions enjoyed the traditional kidney pudding and the fish anda chips.

Poor service, tons of items not available for lunch on a Sunday (no beef, limited chicken, no steak and kidney pie). Poor value for money considering the cost and fact that beyond the meats, the food on the plate was poor (tons of pickled cabbage, one potato per person, drowning in gravy, ready made yorkshire puddings, frozen veg etc..). Nice atmosphere but that's it.

Atrocious service. Run by kids who have only been working here for a matter of weeks and no clue whatsoever. Suggests management don't care.

Several basic items were unavailable on an already limited menu. Service very slow indeed. Food poor standard. Prices certainly not warranted. The venue could have a great atmosphere if it was run well.

One of the must see’s if you’re into old historical pubs! This pub dates back to the 1500’s but rebuilt around 1666 after the great fire of London. The entrance is down an alleyway which I did have to follow Google maps closely as you can easily miss it! Surprisingly very big inside but the ceilings are quite low down which I did bump my head once or twice! Lol. Reminders of the history are displayed with photos around the pub and it’s amazing how Charles Dickens, Mark Twain and Churchill use to stop here for a pint or two. Favourite part was downstairs in the cellar where there are seats and tables along with another bar, I believe the cellar is thought to have belonged to a 13th Century monastery which once occupied the site. Great choice of beers on draft too but (correct me if I’m wrong) you won’t find you’re Carling or Peroni here but Instead unique beers that could be local? Nice to try something different though! Love to come back again one day soon but for some food instead!

An excellent Sunday roast beef served last week during our weekend. Fast service. The next day, the Apple pie was excellent. We will come back
