We had lunch here at Gunthorpe and was very disappointed. My mother and my wife had steak pie with a sauce that tasted like disinfectant. I had the fish and chips. The fish looked grey and also tasted funny. We mentioned this to our waitress and she apologised and offered us a free dessert or drinks. We ordered coffees. Not the waitresses fault she was very nice and did her best. This was the last meal I had with my mother before she passed and thank the chef for making it memorable for the wrong reason. Dont think I will go back.

We booked for afternoon tea and the service was exceptional. We were greeted with a massive platter of succulent sandwiches and rich desserts. Unlimited drinks were included in the plan and both the coffee and the orange juice were delicious. I will note, however, there were a flew flies around our table and the whole establishment is not very accessible, with many various steps and different levels around the building. Overall, though, it was a top-notch meal.

This was our second time to the Old Vol but unfortunately likely to be our last. We visited to celebrate my dad’s birthday on 17th December. The food was brilliant but the service and atmosphere really let it down. It seems if you’re not a regular visitor you’re not welcome. We were ignored, felt like an inconvenience and felt unwelcome. It’s a shame as we live locally but for us it’s all about feeling welcome and a valuable customer whether you go every day or once a year and this visit lacked that feeling in every way.

We came for a Sunday lunch and were happy with the service, food was good apart from not being overly hot and the vegetables had been roasted in rosemary and thyme, this I found stuck in my teeth and spent quite a while picking it off the vegetables. They still tasted lovely.

We were really looking forward to our first Christmas dinner out, but unfortunately, it fell far short of expectations and certainly wasn’t worth £120 per head. The pub was packed, and we were squashed onto a table where we couldn’t even hear each other speak—our poor waitress struggled to hear us as well. The Rosé we were recommended was bitter and not enjoyable at all. There were no crackers on the table—just a ‘Fish n Chip Friday’ promotional flyer, which completely killed any festive atmosphere. As for the food, the roast rump was so tough we couldn’t cut it, even after asking for a steak knife. When we requested a slightly more cooked slice, it arrived looking exactly the same, swimming in blood, and still inedible. We eventually gave up and took it home for the dogs. The rest of the meal wasn’t much better. The roast potatoes were hard and heavy, and the vegetables consisted of parsnips, broccoli and Yorkshire pudding —where were the stuffing, pigs in blankets, or Brussels sprouts? It felt like an average Sunday roast, not a festive Christmas meal. To top it off, the pudding options were disappointing, and we had to ask for basic condiments. We were finally offered crackers, but only after the table next to us had to request them. Overall, we had hoped for a memorable and special Christmas dining experience, but instead, we left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed.
