Friendly service and appealing atmosphere, but a very disappointing meal. We ordered French onion soup which was nothing special, followed by the harissa oyster mushrooms with flatbread, which was dry, over-spiced and with not enough sauces or mushrooms. The flat bread was like cardboard. Maybe the pub classics are better, but we won't be returning to find out: too many better places nearby.

The food was tasty, although it was only lukewarm when it arrived. The first drinks order only reached the table after the food had arrived. We'd ordered the "festive menu" which the website says comes with shared vegetables for the table, but weren't served. When asked, the server said this was an "optional extra" but there isn't an option to order this on the website. The restaurant had the temerity to automatically include a 10% tip on the bill, which isn't mentioned on their website.

We booked early at 7pm on Saturday. It wasn't very busy with not many tables occupied. It was our first visit to The Hungry Horse and we were impressed by the menu options and the reasonable prices. Service was good. However, two of the three meals were ok but the fish and chips was poor. The fish was overcooked and dry. I really should have sent it back. We were then told the bar was shutting at 8pm and we were asked to get any further drink orders in. The reason was apparently trade and staff issues because of the A417 road closures. I had some sympathy for this because managing the pub in this location must be difficult during the A417 construction. However, that was no excuse for the poorly cooked food which we commented on. The website hasn't been updated with changes to opening hours.

Save your money, folks. Terrible coffee and £11 for a very average toastie, with lifeless salad and not even any crisps! Either your prices need an adjustment to be more realistic for the level of product you’re serving, or up your game to your price point. It’s really that simple.
