Visited Hawes for the day and came to the wenslydale creamery and popped here into the cafe for lunch. Greeted by a lovely waitress who showed us to a table. My mam was in a wheelchair and she asked if mam would like to stay in her chair and she would remove the current seat or did mam want assistance getting out of her wheelchair and into the seat and they would store her chair till she was ready to leave. Which we thought was so helpful. We ordered and drinks came out fast the coffee was really nice. We didn't wait long for our main meals and they arrived nicely presented ,hot and tasted good. Two of us had the brocolli and apple soup and one had egg ham and chips. We all had carrot cake for dessert and it was lovely and moist and tasted really good. We had a beautiful view from our window too. We would all definitely return

Went to the Wensleydale factory and brought some cheese today loved tasting it all and we enjoy the shop so then thought we would have a drink in the 1897 Coffee Shop in the factory but found out dogs were not welcome in so we sat outside under a small umbrella cold and wet know I always thought Yorkshire was dog friendly place but this place had 2 notices tell us dogs were not welcome in it coffee shop it was a shame as the drinks and scones were very good I think this place needs to look at we’re it is and the changeable weather it has to make a place inside or a shelter for people with dogs I see 2 couples with dogs just leave due to the reason I’m telling you about if rain just walk on to the town dogs welcome everywhere.

We were unaware that the main restaurant was closed (our fault we didn't check), but happy to try the 1897 Cafe. We went on a weekday in September - hardly anywhere to sit and had to wait a while before seated. Table was sticky and the chairs were covered in food spillages and food but our order got taken swiftly. Considering there were at least 6 waiting staff, it took 15 minutes to get our drinks to us and about 25 minutes just to get us some soup (which was missing the Wensleydale cheese offered on the menu). The food was light bites but pretty tasty overall, however wouldn't eat there again as it was noisy, cramped, not great service and dirty tables and chairs. While we were perusing the gift shop, we did hear a number of people saying that they were not waiting in the queue to eat, didn't look very nice overall and that they would go somewhere else to eat.

We ordered a bacon and egg sandwich and a sausage and bacon and egg sandwich. Worst breakfast I have tasted in a long time. Let’s start with the bread, it’s that cheap bread cake that disintegrated when you pick it up and tastes horrendous. Then the bacon tastes like it has been cooked in a charged oven (smells burnt). The egg was so tough it had clearly been left on the grill for a while. The sausages were dry and tasteless. The meal was dry and not enjoyable. And lastly the brown sauce, cheap sauce. So everything about this family holiday breakfast outing was most definitely cheap. I would have rather paid another £10 for decent ingredients. What an absolute shame that they are not tasting their own food. We will not be visiting anytime soon.

We were in early for lunch on a Tuesday and thankfully missed the worst of the queues that form seemingly out the door miles behind us. Service at the counter was 'steady' perhaps in an effort to manage the number of people descending on the place at 12 noon vs kitchen capacity and how many tables they have? Food selection is good and most things on the menu excellent. In one case from our group of five a cheese on toast order was mistake for a toasty, and it was subsequently delivered rather 'well done' which was a shame as burnt toast isn't great. Everyone else's was top notch though. -1 star for the slightly burnt toastie. Will happily visit again and again though.

Staff need to go on customer care training if they want customers. Very few customers but felt that they did not want the custom. The staff were too busy chatting behind the till than bother about customers. Food was ok but the cafe has gone down from how it used to be. The menu needs to go back to basics.

Visited on Saturday 15th May 2021 Hawes, North Yorkshire. Day 2 of our break, and a revisit for me and the first visit for my wife, in better weather than when I visited last October. Had a break at a disappointing Wensleydale Creamery Cafe (called 1897 Coffee Shop). Initially being made to complete a marketing card on the pretext of it being linked to COVID Check-in and Trace was absolute BS. Ordered this item from the menu. Cockett’s Wensleydale Fruitcake with a slice of Yorkshire Wensleydale Cheese at £3.50. In our view this wasn't a slice of Wensleydale but tasted like a cheap alternative cheddar. Overall very disappointing.

Lovely food freshly prepared, good choice on the menu and the Wensleydale Ginger cheesecake for perfection, still regretting my decision to share with my husband! I visited the 1897 Coffee Shop as a stop-off on a tour of the Yorkshire Dales. The weather was terrible so I passed on the tour of the Wensleydale Creamery itself and went to the Visitor Centre which was closer. A tip: Visit the cheese shop in the Visitor Centre first, and sample the cheeses on offer. They really whet your appetite for a menu which revolves mainly around cheese. With a limited amount of time available I opted for a cheese scone (cheddar and Red Leicester, which gives the scone a rich, orange colouring) and butter with an additional wedge of Wensleydale and a pot of locally-made chutney. The texture was light and crumbly and the flavour was excellent, especially in combination with the accompaniments. As has been commented on in other reviews, the atmosphere is a little on the "sterile" side and the compensating factor - the view of the Dales - was lost because of a dense misty rain. But in the end, that's peripheral - you're there to eat, and although simple, I found the food really satisfactory, A really good way to spend time if you're visiting the Creamery.

Came here for a light lunch with a friend. I had a soup and roll. The soup was vegetarian- roasted squash with cracked pepper. The soup had a skin on it. The bread roll was rock hard and had to be dipped in the soup to be palatable. Soup was tasty in its defence. Friend had cheese on toast with a meagre salad and some chutney in a small bowl. Cheese on toast looked a bit flat but I was assured it tasted good. A hot chocolate and a sparkling water completed our visit. Staff seemed a bit brusque and probably tired by 2pm when we got there. Maybe that’s why it all felt a bit flat!!

Decided to call in for a light lunch of soup and a sandwich which proved to be a bit of a mistake as a large bowl of soup came with a big bread roll and a large sandwich so we had a job to eat it all.No complaints about the food as both the soup and sandwich were lovely - just not needed together but that was our fault for being greedy - our eyes bigger than our bellies as saying goes.

Good place for lunch, the soup was excellent and the cheese scones were apparently the best tasted by those who had them. So no problem at all with the food. The views from the cafe are good as well. However, service was a bit slow and not well organised - a big (6) coffee order seems to stop everything, the food displays are poor (you can't really tell what is and isn't available) and whoever decided that what a cafe with views over the countryside needs is a bit TV with news and subtitles must have been wearing the wrong trousers.

Had our 'in-laws' over from Germany and as part of their visit we went to the Yorkshire Dales and visited this Creamery to see the Cheese Making Demo. A very pleasant morning was had and then we decided to take a snack in the Coffee Shop. The place was very busy but we were dealt within a speedy, accurate and efficient manner by pleasant staff. Two of our party had the Cauliflower and Wensleydale Soup and the other two had Scone with jam and cream and Coffee. Everyone was very satisfied with their food. The soup was thick and plentiful and very tasty and was served with a huge bread bun and Wensleydale butter. The Scones were large but tasty and moist, again served with Wensleydale butter, jam and cream and were delicious. The coffee was a good Americano style, rich, dark and tasty. Looking around everyone else was enjoying their food and drinks as there was a wide selection of cakes and other snacks available. Although I have to say our choices looked the most popular, the soup and the scones. The Coffee Shop was clean, well presented and absolutely packed so if you go be prepared to fight for a table to enjoy your delicious fare.

Visited the cafe recently for coffee, can’t say we will be rushing back. One of the party is dairy free we asked whether they provided any dairy free alternative milks to which the response was no. It’s not an unusual request and have to say most places now offer either soya/almond/oat milk. So unfortunately this member of the party was unable to have any hot drink or food at the cafe.

We visited the Yorkshire market town of Hawes and walked past many cafes and restuarants to get to the Wensleydale Creamery at the top of the hill expecting the quality fare that one would expect from a place with a good reputation for produce. We chose the 1897 Coffee shop as opposed to the restuarant and ordered the soup and sandwich where the soup was listed as carrot and corriander. A simple enough soup to prepare. The sandwich choice was white bun or white bun, no brown alternative. Clearly cost cutting to provide the cheapest sandwich available. The soup was absolutely tastless and withoug seasoning or flavour. The overall expereince was really quite poor and surprising for a venue which has such a good reputation for its cheese. In my view, regardless of what you are serving it should deliver flavour and value for money. Sadly, the 1897 Coffee shop failed miserably here.

We headed for the creamery last Saturday as several of our party hadn't visited before. On arrival we realised that there wouldn't be enough time for a visit to the creamery so diverted for the coffee shop. There was no sense of welcome or encouragement to what might be available, nor any focus on what might not be available at that moment.Staff were busy with their chit chat and I felt that the customer was something of an inconvenience. While we were having our drinks staff were busy clearing and sweeping up. Of course the sweeping up was needed as the people doing the clearing were wiping directly from table to floor. We hurried to get away...maybe that was what was wanted!!?When we visited the cheese shop there are large signs noting hygiene, and yet staff were wiping cheese bits onto the floor. The nearby brush suggested what was to follow. There was nothing to suggest that the open sampler cheese dishes ever had covers.Rather in despair now I headed to the shop to meet our friends, and had to negotiate the ubiquitous brush that was in use there too.I have had so many excellent visits to Hawes and the Wensleydale creamery in the past that this experience was very disappointing.

Whilst in Hawes, we popped into the Creamery shop and Cafe for a look around and a quick snack. Not being very hungry we went for the cheap and cheerful option of cheese on toast (what else would you try at a cheese factory?) - however, what was brought out to us was the tastiest cheese on toast I've ever eaten! Not only was it tasty, but it was substantial and well presented. It provided a surprisingly and disproportionately pleasant lunch! The cheese shop itself has the full range of Wensleydale Creamery cheeses and you are actively encouraged to try samples of them all whilst there - and there are dozens to try! I defy you to visit and not buy anything! Unless you dislike cheese, I would recommend this as a great place to drop in to if you are in Hawes.

We have been visiting the Creamery for many years (we visit the area a few times a year) ... we often use Calvert's Restaurant however, off and on, we have been traitors and (for speed) used the 1897 Coffee Shop. The waitress-service Restaurant is a little more expensive than the Coffee Shop but, we feel it has a much better atmosphere than the Coffee Shop. There is one issue we have tried to ignore with the latter, for the sake of our love of the Creamery - but our last visit to the Coffee Shop (mid-September) made our minds up. We can no longer overlook the dirty floor. We have seen the tables wiped over but never the floor attended to. Other establishments manage to clear up after messy customers but it doesn't look as if it happens at the Coffee Shop very often - well, not prior to any visit we have made anyway. There is nothing worse than having to sit at a table, afraid of putting your feet down and making your shoes dirtier than when they came in. That is a strong comment but this is what we have experienced - with hindsight, I should have taken photographs as proof. It doesn't take much for a member of staff to be 'on top of it' and periodically get a broom out - I for one would be quite happy to wait a few seconds for this to be done, before I sat down. It will always be the Calvert's Restaurant for us from now on.

Touring the dales we decided to stop here as there were eighteen of us, very good selection of food and drink, nice cheese tasting section as well. Plenty of parking and things to buy.

Great café at Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes, friendly staff, reasonably priced snacks, well worth a visit.

This coffee shop has a lovely selection of cakes and snacks. I love the fruit cake and Wensledale cheese and cup of Yorkshire tea. What could be better on a cold October day, all served by very friendly staff.

Perhaps not surprisingly Wensleydale isn't really a hot spot for coffee shops. It's more of a tea shop area. However this place is great and I can hardly ever resist stopping here when I'm in Hawes. Normally I'd think the creamery (where it is located) is a bit too touristy and 'cheesy'. But this is a nice modern and stylish place with views over the dale and good coffee. Not surprisingly (as the home of Wensleydale cheese) the cheesecake is also some of the best there is. I just wish they'd have a bit more variety in the flavours. They only do ginger. But it is very nice. Definately the place to go in Wensleydale if you're craving a coffee.

Called in for lunch and to meet relatives from Bristol who were travelling north. very clean café in the grounds of and run by the Wensleydale cheese makers (with visitors centre, shop etc.) Large licensed café in which you wait to be seated. They have a menu and a specials board. The food is prepared to order and is of good quality and plentiful. The ploughmans has to be seen to be believed. The prices are good and the service excellent. Everything is spotless and it is a nice relaxing atmosphere in which to dine. we shall certainly return.

Spent a week in Hawes, tried three different spots for my morning fix. Not only the only cafe offering a flat white, was simply the best tasting coffee: strong, bitter, not too long. Great scones too!

Nothing fancy, straightforward cafe food, with the added benefit of top-notch cheese as a base ingredient. The ploughmans was excellent, as was the cheese on toast.

We were on holiday in Leyburn and decided to visit the Brewers Fayre for Sunday Lunch. Very pleasant staff greeted us and we had a very enjoyable Sunday lunch. Good variety of roasts and vegetables. Would suggest booking for Sunday lunch

Not sure where to start. Only one table was in, and yet we seemed an inconvenience. The food is below average, pay £20 for the top dish, to find it was frozen chicken nuggets, food very cold and came out at all differant time Atmosphere terrible, no music, no coffee cups, no hot chocolate, no ice, no cutlery wrapped, dirty glasses, toilets are dirty with loose wires everywhere. Only one staff member on, making excuses all the time, making us feel uncomfortable. What a shame, lovely village, wish I had gone to the cafe down the road for half the price.

Stopped by for a drink and a bite to eat after visiting the forbidden corner today. The pub was lovely and warm with three fires going! Really cosy and nicely decorated inside. The food was lovely and hearty and really warmed us all up. Definitely one to stop at if you find yourself in the area. Staff were friendly too!

Arrived at 16.35 on Bank Holiday Monday. I asked if they were still serving as a large section was not in use, they had cleared and moved chairs away from and area and were in the process of cleaning the coffee machine. A young girl said we close at 5pm, no smile, no hello. She was not happy when we ordered 2 coffees and sat down. At 16.55 she appeared over my shoulder and said "we close in 5 minutes" I replied yes I am aware of that and had not forgotten that we have been a great inconvenience to you!!! She then went outside to collect the A frame in puffing if her vape. Wrong person to work in a coffee house in a customer service job. Obviously didn't want to he there. Very rude no manners.
