Fiancé’s Garlic bread was laughable; as thin as a tortilla wrap. I fancied prawns but didn’t agree with the £10 supplement for what would be a small starter, so had a taco which was just underwhelming. Burger was very dry. Not good value for money.

On arriving no welcome from reception place very cold lacked any atmosphere. Restaurant was virtually empty very cold. Waiter was very good Ben, welcoming and very attentive. Food chateaubriand with two sauces peppercorn and bbq served with vine tomatoes mushrooms and fries at £90 was delicious BBQ sauce would have been better warm. Desserts at £10 a head very extremely overpriced but delicious brownie icecream and baked Alaska. Bottle of Malbec was £32 however came out cold. Very quick service we were served within 45 mins for two courses so had a sit in the bar whilst waiting for our booked taxi 1 hour 15mins later. Bar very cold and lacking atmosphere too

We had several people in for a dinner. The menu was great, and the meat and fish portions excellent and plenty. Many of us had chips, chunky and tasty. The drinks menu had good variety where we chose appetizers and wine to pair with the meal. The service was a bit on the slow side, most tables were full though. This was the second time we went there and would return on our next trip.

We stayed at Low Wood Bay one year ago for two nights after our wedding and we ate at the Blue Smoke On The Bay, and that meal was absolutely delicious so we told ourselves we would return every year for a meal as our wedding anniversary celebration. So for our one year anniversary we came back for a meal here and what a disappointment! We ordered: Starters - 2x Butterflied Tiger King Prawns Mains - 10oz Cumbrian Dry-Aged Sirloin (with Skinny Fries and Beer Battered Onion Rings) and the Wood-Fired Slow Cooked Lamb Shoulder (with Blue Smoke Seasoned Chips). We got the prawns one year ago and they were unbelievable! They melted in the mouth with a fantastic flavour. However this time, you only got 3 bits of prawn but most of the plate was made up of the 3 heads of the prawns for “aesthetic purposes”, which actually didn’t look appealing at all. And then there was also a piece of focaccia, which was very dry and stale. The steak was cooked as requested (medium rare) but it was still very tough and hard to chew. The lamb had a lovely flavour but it was so dry, the Seasoned Chips were delicious though. Our bill came to £128.70 which isn’t cheap and so not worth it. After this disappointing experience we will not be returning for further anniversaries.

We had dinner on Friday 27th my partner had the steak which was nice and tasty, i had the burger which i found rather peppery and just average, also i mentioned when booking this it was for my birthday, i booked in advance as we were staying in the winander rooms, the waiter was lovely and great service from him, the fact that they did not offer a little something not even a small card with happy birthday would be nice but nothing, even though my partner told them it was my birthday...hence the 3 star average, first time ever in a restaurant not to be wished a happy birthday..plus for the price we paid i felt it very overpriced having to pay for onion rings on top of the steak price, frozen chips with herbs on them, not for us, would never come back very disappointing...

As a long standing member of Lancaster House Hotel’s Sandpiper Club and regular diner and advocate of the hotel for both business and pleasure, I visited the Blue Smoke restaurant at Low Wood Bay with high hopes, only to leave very disappointed. The restaurant area itself was tired, claustrophobic and chaotic, with the bar area resembling a pot wash in an industrial kitchen. Whilst the restaurant staff were pleasant, they weren’t clued-up and to have any consistency in service was nigh impossible given the circa 5-6 staff members that interchangeably managed our table. Even removing empty glasses from the table, wasn’t something that occurred to any of them. As for the food, it was distinctly average, verging on poor some areas, and sadly forgettable. The duck starter had the consistency of ‘scraps’ from a fish a chip shop, conjuring a sense of nostalgia if nothing else. The steak was well cooked, but the accompanying chips were overcooked and had seemingly been hanging around in a fryer basket for far too long. Given the proximity to a busy road and the lack of refinement, I would describe Blue Smoke restaurant as being a modern day ‘Little Chef with a View’, but at a premium price point. All in all a hugely underwhelming experience, with no reason to return.

Had the afternoon tea, the service was good and fast. The food was a little disappointing for the price. Everything was cold, such as the nachos and taco. On the dessert side the creme brulee tart was overbaked and was lumpy, the doughnuts looked like they came from a supermarket. The chips, chicken wings and slider were all great, would give them 5 stars. The restaurant itself was nice and clean.

Came for anniversary dinner. Waiting on was sloppy, attention to detail lacking. Asked if we wanted to order three courses at the same time. Had steak sharing board, arrived really quick and cooked well. Desserts were ok, but were nothing special. Unfortunately the meal was spoiled by a loud diner who spent most of the evening swearing and speaking loudly with waiting staff and chefs. I was disappointed that this was not managed by staff.

We were travelling from Cartmel to Keswick and stopped at the Blue Smoke for lunch having did a quick search on Google for places to eat. We managed to snag a window seat despite not having made a reservation which was a bonus. I had the salmon dish and my partner had the prawn tacos, to which we added a side of broccoli. My dish was excellent, my partner really enjoyed hers but thought that there would be a bit of char or smokiness to the prawns. The side dishes was very nice and added some pretence that we were being healthy. Staff friendly and attentive. Would definitely return.

The setting for this restaurant is lovely with great views across the water. The service was also great. The starter of lamb kofta/meatball was tasty but I was absolutely astounded at the small portion size. £11 for 1 meatball and a sliver of bread? I genuinely thought it was a joke at first and considered sending it back. This was the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 (See photo) The main course of chateaubriand was incredible. Cooked perfectly and sides were delicious and plentiful too.

Food was absolutely delicious and couldnt fault it! The service for myself and partner was horrendous. Whilst everyone else was being waited on we was left. We asked for water on arrival it didn’t come. The only time we saw a waiter was when they took our order and the final bill. The table ahead of us got asked multiple times if they wanted any extra drinks or water and even how their food was. On the other hand we was completely ignored. I don’t know if it’s because we was young and thought we didn’t have money but it was horrendous service. When spending £120 on food for 2 people we would expect better. When we mentioned as feedback to the gent he was very lovely and said he would take the service charge off but we are good people and decided to keep it on as it was only feedback. Like I say the place is lovely and the food was amazing but they really need to serve everyone equally.

Ordered Octopus for starters. It was awful and defiantly not bbq as described, defiantly ready purchased. It was 3 tiny pieces on top of a small amount of rocket… Ridiculous for £17.50. Low Wood’s major update a few years ago deserves applause and the spa in particular is fantastic. Sadly Blue Smoke is a disappointment still. This was our second visit and worse than our first trip last year. “While you wait” padron peppers took over 20 minutes and were virtually raw, not smoked at all. Flat champagne (admittedly they comped it when we finally got served our food) and then pub-type main courses didn’t help either. I’m sure they have the kit to make even frozen food good but only the soy dressing on the rock hard “teriyaki” broccoli side saved my dry jerk chicken. Staff were trying but obviously inexperienced. Given that our expectations weren’t high I’m still surprised how poor the meal was. A shame

It wasn't obvious at first where the parking for the Low Wood Bay is, as the entrance for the parking is found after the building (coming from Kendal) and there are no signs beforehand to point you in the right direction. The food was very tasty, cooked well, and well presented. We found that the "whilst you decide" that we had, which was the Nachos, was a rather big portion for the concept, but who complains about portions being too big, right! :) My wife had the Chicken Caesar Salad, and I the Fillet both of which were fit for purpose and done as they should be. A proper establishment that knows what they're doing.

Visited Blue Smoke on the Bay with my wife for our wedding anniversary on 23/5/24 and opted for the Afternoon Tea. The venue is really nice and we had a lovely table overlooking Windermere. That was as good as it got unfortunately. The Afternoon Tea was far from what we expected and were looking forward to. It was well presented in the cast iron skillets however the food is very much below average and definitely not enough for two people. I would agree with other negative reviews that say the prawns (1 small prawn each) and other items were out of a frozen packet and the sauces were bottled. As for the cheese sauce on the nachos, shockingly bad. I had expected fresh cakes but these also seemed like a cheap and cheerful option. No smoke flavour to any of the food and not even any seasoning on the few chips that we shared. I arrived hungry and excited and left hungry and very disappointed. Sorry Blue Smoke on the Bay, you didn't impress with the food so I can't recommend this to anyone. Nice view though.

We were given a voucher for paddle boarding, afternoon tea and spa access at Low Wood Bay for our wedding last year. We arrived at Blue Smoke on the Bay expecting a traditional afternoon tea, so we were blown away when our food arrived! The stand was made from iron skillets containing things like sliders, chicken wings, fries and slaw, followed by doughnuts and cheesecake (and of course the traditional scone!). Service and setting was great, and it was great to have something so different. We'll definitely be back.

Booked this venue for afternoon tea, with between 48-72 hours notice. As seems to be standard practice, the online form queried if there were any food allergies or intolerances, and this was duly filled out as my wife (who shares my surname if this is ever followed up) has a citrus intolerance. On arrival, we were greeted by a young man, who also enquired about food allergies/intolerances. In response to our answer, our server hesitated, mentioning that he felt the citrus intolerance would limit the food selection available. Our server offered to check with the kitchen to see how this might affect our menu choices. He was sent back rather apologetically with the disappointing news that almost all of the elements contained some citrus ingredients. Although an alternative was offered - choosing from the lunch menu - we were not confident the issue would be resolved , and felt we had no option but to leave reluctantly, yet quietly. I really felt for our server, clearly "hung out to dry", "face the music" and "take one for the team". All in all, not the best experience for us, and having dined out many evenings in the Ambleside area, we are fully aware that better outcomes are attainable. Going forward, it may be worthwhile checking online forms in ample time before the guest arrives to eat.

Disappointed. I saw Blue smoke and was looking forward to the meal all week. When it came to walking into the restaurant we were met with the bored, unwelcoming face of the manager (I assume) he took our name, barely mumbled a word and pointed to our table, waiting silently as we sat down. We ordered our food and despite feeling like we were unwelcome by the staff and pushed into a corner ( because we had a toddler &high chair maybe?) made the most of it and looked forward to what had been promoted on the website and by word of mouth as a great meal. What arrived was plain, lacking flavour and saturated in whatever marinade was described on the menu, meant to hide the poor quality produce I’m presuming. My partner ordered the prawn tacos, which were tasteless and lacking in anything that would set it apart from a grocery sandwhich section meal deal. I ordered the bricklayer steak which was gross; my first was an inedible: leathery, well done (ordered medium rare) large piece of rubber that I kindly asked be sent back. What returned was no bigger than a slice of bacon and was literally raw throughout. I took 2 bites (equating to half of the ‘steak’) and decided no more. When the waiter came to take the plates I described the problem and that I was done, we wanted to leave. HE was exceptionally apologetic and the nicest person we spoke to (he is the reason there is a single star for service, that’s all for him, it would be 0 otherwise) he addressed the issue by removing the £30 steak from the bill. I thanked him and we left, noting that at no point did the manager have the professionalism or courtesy to address the matter. I was so disappointed by this restaurant, it’s in a beautiful setting and it’s a really nice building but is let down by restaurant staff who aren’t personable and low quality, poorly cooked food that just isn’t worth the price. Hopefully we just got a bad day, but unless I can be convinced otherwise I won’t be returning.

This was our first visit to Blue Smoke - in fact, we haven't been to the Low Wood complex since the upgrading took place some years ago. We were immediately impressed by the greeting received, and when we gave o0ur name, the person immediately confirmed a note of our dietary requirements bade when booking. We were shown to a table with an excellent view over the Lake and were asked what substitutes we would like on the afternoon tea menu for the items one of us could not eat. The afternoon tea arrived, with our choice of beverages after a short wait and the substitutes were exactly as requested. The concept of an afternoon tea prepared over wood smoke is unusual but it worked really well. The food was tasty and lost of different small portions made it a varied and tasty meal. The balance was 50% between savoury and sweet. The staff were attentive and very pleasant. The meal was at a gentle pace which gave time to savour each item at our own pace. In all, we were dining for about 90 minutes (although it did not seem so long is the comfortable surroundings. We visited Blue Smoke on the Bay on a Wednesday evening. It was not overly busy, but staff were busy attending to those already seated. We waited a couple of minutes for someone to confirm our reservation and were then seated. Here my first issue arose - the gentleman showing us to our seats was very abrupt and almost made is feel like we were an inconvenience to him. Not a great start, but a minor issue all the same. When we were seated, my partner immediately commented on her bench seat being fat too low. We decided to swap, so she could sit in the chair, and straight away I saw what she meant. Despite being incredibly comfy, the bench cushion sank to such a point that I (a 6"3 bloke) felt I was looking up at her, and the table was pretty much at chest height. It was comfortable to sit in, but not comfortable to eat at. The couple next to us commented on having the same problem and agreed it was not well thought through. The layout of the restaurant was pleasant, and we were able to see into the open kitchen where the three chefs operated and used the woodfire to cook the food. We were abruptly given menus by the bloke that seated us, before he whisked off to do something else. We then weren't seen again for another 10 minutes, which was ironic considering we wanted to order the Artisan breads from the "Whilst you decide" section of the menu. In the end, we ordered the bread at the same time we ordered everything else. Again, not great. Then the food started to come out, and things got better (to an extent). Starters: I ordered the Crispy Duck Pancake and my partner ordered the Watermelon, Cucumber and Feta salad. Both were well flavoured and portioned, with the duck being extra crispy on a bed of spring onions, hoisin sauce and one pancake. The salad was... Well, a salad. Main: 20oz Chateaubriand share platter, with sides of Onion Rings and Blue Smoke Seasoned Chips. Sauces: Blue Stilton sauce and Roast Garlic & Herby butter. The first thing I'll say for the chefs is this - that meat was cooked to perfection. It's hard to find an establishment nowadays that can actually cook meat rare and not have it go too far either way (usually closer to medium rare than rare). But this was spot on. However, if that cut was 20oz at any point in it's life, pre or post cook, then I'll be damned. For a 20oz chateaubriand, you should be getting more than 5 slices of meat. That really got my back up considering it was £85. The slices were not thick either. The sides were lovely, with the beer battered onion rings cooked really well, and the chips were well portioned. We then had the Brownie and Cheesecake for dessert. The options weren't great and were no more than you would expect from a standard British pub. It would have been nice to see a cheese board on there, given the prevalent nature of cheese in the local area. The desserts were nothing special - the brownie was packed full of taste, but the cheesecake was standard. When we finally asked for the bill, we were dismayed to see a £17.60 service charge added on - which given the poor service, we would have not chosen to pay - however being typical brits, we felt it would be rude to ask for it to be removed. So in total, our bill came to £195.30. Honestly, I can't say I would go back again. The food was nice, but that was about it. The service was poor, which for the prices you would think would not be the case. And until they learn what 20oz actually looks like, it's a no from me.

This was our 6th visit to the Blue Smoke on the Bay and once again an excellent meal. Gary the restaurant manager made sure I had my favourite pudding cooked by George, we also had our favourite table. Gary lead a fabulous team which made us very welcome and service was outstanding. The Master chef Matt and his team( including Andrew)cooked a superb meal for us. The steaks were delicious cooked by Alf whose expertise in cooking our steaks to our preference is a sheer delight to our taste buds. During our meal we also met the Food and Beverage Manager who was very professional also the Duty Manager Lee Harry whom was very informative. True perfection. Thank you Blue Smoke on the Bay.

We ate here as the W Restaurant was closed and it was a nice place to eat if you like wood fired meat. The starter was okay, the soup but I wouldn’t have it again due to the size of it. My main, the chicken was okay but the skinny chips were to die for, they were delicious. We both had pudding which again, we didn’t bother with again as not that nice. The menu didn’t change for the 3 nights we were there and I could find it slightly boring after a while. Staff were very friendly and attentive.

This is our second visit here and I am not sure we should have given it a second.chance. Service the first time was poor. But tonight it was painful. The water we ordered for the table never arrived, despite asking again. The champagne we ordered arrived but.we were left to pour it ourselves. When our glasses became empty. Despite waiters walking through constantly. I also have an intolerance to spicy food. And I ordered fillet steak which said it came salted on the menu. However it came covered in a pepper like spice which I struggled to eat. If only it mentioned it on the memu I could have adapted. Overall. Poor service for little value. Which is a shame as we love the hotel. And this was a treat for our anniversary

Called in on spec, and was lucky to secure a table, service was excellent and the sirloin was cooked to perfection. Special mention to young Ben who treated me like royalty. A great place.

We went for dinner here for the first time the other day, and it was out of this world. The entire experience from start to finish was 10/10! The food was ridiculously good, and Rusa, Beth, and Ben were absolutely amazing. Best service we’ve ever had! We will absolutely be returning in the future 😊

Food ok but service terrible. We went for a spa day for my husband's birthday. We were seated for our afternoon tea and once we had confirmed we didn’t want any wine we were practically ignored. We didn’t get asked if we wanted our hot drink which was included in the afternoon tea or any other drinks. When we were finished we had to go up to ask for the bill and they had the cheek to put an automatic service charge on. I asked for it to be removed advising the service had been shocking as we had practically been ignored. The waiter didn’t seem that bothered and gave a half a**ed apology. He didn’t bother asking why the service was bad. Spa was nice but won’t rush back for food. Not what you expect from a 4 star hotel. Very disappointed.

Not the nicest afternoon tea ever? The hottest item was the piri piri chicken wings which we were told were not hot just 🥵 spicy. We were still hungry when we were leaving? Disappointed ☹️ Not what it says on the tin

£10 for a ham and cheese sandwich on the menu. £5 for a smoothie, according to the menu. Quite expensive. Plus they add on 10% on top of everything, without telling you. Rather under-handed. The food was nice, the staff were pleasant and helpful (for the most part). However, when we asked to sit in a seating area, that was empty, we were told it was only for restaurant use, and as we didn't have a reservation could not sit there to order drinks and food, despite the fact the restaurant only had 2 or 3 tables occupied. Whilst being served, we were not asked if there were any issues until the starters were nearly finished, meaning we were unable to ask for anything supplementary (sauces etc), during the main course we were not checked up on until nearly everyone had finished. Clearing away was begun before everyone had finished, and sweet menus brought and left leaving the table only half cleared. Not the greatest experience. On the other hand, they did bring a cupcake with a candle for my mother-in-law whose 87th birthday was the reason we were there.

This is a high class eatery in a very snazzy high class resort next to Lake Windermere. The food is excellent and grill oriented, such as steaks, chops, burgers, pulled pork etc. Next to the lake has excellent views across it. Was great place for a special, but not cheap dinner.

Fantastic 2 course spa day lunch. Way Better than expected! Super tasty watermelon, feta & mint salad starter was so fresh and healthy! Then the wood smoked chicken breast with fat chips and coleslaw, with a side ot Teryaki glazed broccoli was just the ticket after a 3hour stint in the thermal experience! Will definitely be back! Lovely attentive staff too which always helps!

We came for lunch and I cannot fault the service which was excellent throughout, helpful and friendly. The surroundings were comfortable and well spaced. However, we left less than impressed with the food which was at best average, despite the prices which were somewhat higher. It is a grill but there was little variety of choice of main courses. For the carnivores 3 beef choices, one chicken and one salmon. What about pork or our excellent lamb? Not wanting to chomp my way through a large steak or burger, I chose the salmon. It was overcooked and dry with little flavour. Served with grilled asparagus (at this time of year? No thank you.) and boiled potatoes though I am not sure what they had done with them as they had a strange texture. It was all edible, but not what I had hoped for. Husband chose the burger which he declared to be tasty but very dry. We also had starters which were ok and puddings, the strawberry meringue. At £7 I did expect something more than some liqueur-soaked strawberries sitting on cream and surrounded by chunks of pink meringue. Not the most visually attractive of desserts. The wine and beer were both very good and we didn't not enjoy our lunch, but we won't be going again.

Sadly many things on the menu not available despite it being 7pm on a Saturday night. If you don’t have salsa, go buy the ingredients and make some! Also, it’s a bbq place, always have salsa available! Some of the meats not available either nor were different types of tequila and mescal. So what we ate was good but lack of options of menu was disappointing. Quite a long wait to place our order even though the restaurant wasn’t that busy, but food did come out in a reasonable time. Poor vegetarian options.
