Terrible and inefficient service

Worth a little detour from the main high street,

DON’T GO. I would give zero stars if that was an option. The staff are grumpy, inept, aggressive with a terrible attitude. The set up shambolic. The amount of time it takes to make a coffee is beyond comprehension while the queue gets longer and longer. I don’t know why there are tables in the room where orders are taken - customers confused about the queueing system getting in each others way, not enough room so the staff get in each others way. I witnessed several unhappy complaining customers (there was plenty of opportunity as the queue was moving at glacial speed). No apologies when things went wrong. Tourists who had made a special trip rudely being told food and beer weren’t being served even though it was made to look like they were. This is a BEAUTIFUL spot and the cafe has the potential to be a magical place to sit and eat however it is more like a horror show. Years ago there was a lovely, welcoming, competent (Spanish?) manager. We would go and have Sunday lunch and it was like fine dining. The odd time things might go wrong but he was so gracious - and that made all the difference. So my advice is DON’T GO. There are bad vibes in that place. Such an awful shame as it used to be my favourite

I wish I had taken photos of everything we had, but even if I did, it wouldn’t have made it justice. The Buttery Cafe is one of my most favourite places in London. Mostly because the minute you walk in there, you can actually forget that you are indeed still in London. No ambulance and police sirens, no noise pollution, just greenery, good food and great coffee. Their polenta cake, carrot cake, brownies and soup with cheese scone or sourdough bread are second to none - true unpretentious comfort food for the soul. I used to work at the cafe back in 2011 and I remember that one of the key values of the company that runs it is to never compromise with the quality of the ingredients. It is incredibly comforting to see that 12 years later they still adhere to this value and offer superb quality.

Sadly I have had to change my review of Burgh house cafe which seats people outside in the beautiful garden or inside. Today, we never got our food, having literally waited an hour...the couple sitting next to us were laughing rather than crying as their order had taken longer than ours! I made a joke as it is in a beautiful setting, and said, it's a lovely day for it though! Not being hurried up to finish eating your food is great but not actually getting your food, not so good. Finally I asked for a refund, which they did...though if they had been more likely to win their customers back, they would have said...have your coffee on us! ☕

I either write reviews for amazing service or terrible service and unfortunately today it’s the later. The cafe itself is beautiful and in a wonderful location however it was the customer service that brought the stars down. My friend and I both ordered the zartaar sweet potato salad. The potatoes were very undercooked, they barely had burnt edges as it would if cooked properly. It was so hard even the thinly cut pieces were still crunchy. At the start of my meal asked the staff were these potatoes cooked, he responded ‘it wasn’t me who cooked them’ I also asked would I get a stomach ache consuming them?’ he responded ‘well it depends how strong your stomach was’. I asked the staff member can he check with the team and let me know. He never returned so I had the salad leaves but left the potatoes. At the end of the meal I requested for a refund but was denied because I had 90% of the meal. Despite being patient we were left waiting and passed around because new customers were more a priority. Staff was also heard making snarky remarks in the open kitchen and ‘can they not stand there it’s in the way’. I was then given the manager’s email to request for a refund but I’m honestly upset how unprofessional it was handled. I’ve been told amazing things about this place a shame my first experience was really disappointing

Great little location, cosy spot - nice enough staff. However the food/drink was absolutely awful, cake was poorly baked and hot drink was cold. To their credit I switched out the cake - but just dissappointing when you're paying £4.50 for a slice.

The benedict was absolutely horrible, drenched in a lot of sauce. The staff never wipe the tables between customers, the tables are always dirty with stains. The garden needs maintenance, it's all just a big bush of leaves.

My order was forgotten. I had to remind the staff.

I come here often and service has been going down hill recently. Very slow to get a coffee today, guy on the till was almost asleep and the one making coffee made our order before someone several customers in front of us. Shame they've swapped the really nice cups for something you'd get in a church hall. Coffee still excellent though and lovely setting

Wow! What a beautiful find in the heart of Hampstead. The food was delicious and very well priced for Hampstead. I had a chicken pie and it was perfect, and a very generous portion! The staff were polite and funny, particularly the manager Camille. Fun, light hearted atmosphere and a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of london. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for some good quality food and some peace and quiet. Happy dining :)

Burgh House is one of Hampstead's most loveliest hidden gems and the cafe is a delight to visit. The eggs Benedict are superb, their main courses are so tasty and they serve huge portions. Delicious cakes and treats on offer too. Te staff are super friendly, helpful and charming. You must pay it a visit.

What an amazing place, I'm so lucky I came across it! I am currently planning my wedding at Burgh House and I cannot thank the staff enough for all their help. I had a wonderful cake tasting with their amazing chef Laila and Cami, the manager, has just been a dream with helping me plan the big day. Burgh House June 2024 - I cannot wait!

Even on such a busy day this weekend, we managed to find a lovely seat in the garden. We ate some really lovely smashed avocado with perfectly poached eggs. My elderly mum loved her earl grey so, thank-you very much to all the lovely staff xx

Went at lunchtime so it was very busy. Quite cramped and small inside. It's partially self-service. I had the chicken and leek pie, which was very nice. Good portion size and relatively well priced. I also had a piece of carrot cake to go. It was nice, but the typical cream cheese frosting you find on carrot cakes tasted of and had the texture of yoghurt, which wasn't great.

We only a hot drink outside in the cafe, we did not visit the museum so cannot mark that, but a nice quiet place to stop.

Beautiful place, terrible service. 30 minutes waiting for pancakes and toast. If you come, ask for something ready-made.

Beautiful place and lovely atmosphere but definitely not good as Café. Overpriced, unwelcoming staff, food not freshly made as they say. Pancakes are frozen dry and tasteless. The boy at the till has no customer service attitude at all. Doesn't even look at you in the face but just at your credit card. You must clean your own table from previous guest as not enough staff to do it. Pity.

A shadow of its former self. First the menu became a lot more boring, now they can’t even get staff who would notice that when pouring tea water that it should be hot.

Where do I start…..such a beautiful place filled with an abundance of beautiful flowers and shrubs. The food was delightful and so fresh, worth every penny. A little gem in the heart of a busy city

The surroundings and the garden are very beautiful to be in on a sunny day but unfortunately they seem to rely only on the natural beauty of the garden to keep customers happy. There is no service, ordering, picking up the food, picking up cuttleries and tab water you all do it yourself, the food is overpiced £4 for a small piece of banana cake) and tastes more like basic canteen food hence the three stars which are only for the beautiful surroundings.

This is a great little cafe, which is dog friendly. It has a very attractive garden with tables dispersed within it. Making it feel secluded and tranquil. This is a real hidden jem in Hampstead, and the staff are friendly, the food / drink is overall very good. Highly recommended, as a place to meet friends or take a book and chill.

Tried to charge £2.60 for a can of coke or £3.50 for a cup of tea so we walked out welcome to rip off Britain.

Went here recently, ordered a coffee and a cake. Cappachino was on the large side - always a plus! The lemon shortbread was really good, definitely would order it again!

Classic delightful old English venue.

The surroundings are elegant and lovely, but the coffee and food in no way match them, being astonishingly poor in quality. The coffee tasted as though it were from a hospital vending-machine and the scone was stale, dry and flavourless - like old bread. How disappointing that no effort at all is made to serve something nice here when Burgh House is so beautiful.

Definitely the highlight when visiting Burgh House, but gets incredibly busy at weekends. Very nice home cooked meals, soups with savoury scones and cakes. In winter staff make sitting outside easier by providing blankets.

Wonderful serene place in the heart of Hampstead. Although Hampstead is so busy on weekends I've always found a spot in the Burgh House café and it's wonderfully serene. They're Eggs Benedict and savoury scone are devine. Also a great spot to bring visitors to show off some great British specialities!

Lovely café just few steps away from Hampstead Tube station. They offer a wide range of sweet and savoury options, including vegan brownies and cakes. The staff is very friendly and professional. The sitting inside is limited, but if the weather allows, you can enjoy your breakfast or meal in the wonderful garden alfresco area. I will definitely pop in again for a coffee.

Lovely little quite corner of Hampstead, away from the hustle and bustle of the main street. I haven't tried their main meals but their croissant chocolate cake was delicious - not sweet and not bland. Their cakes are not factory made. Unfortunately their seating area is tight and there isn't much of it.

Lovely place but awful food. So disappointing. Staff are really nice but can hardly cope with the number of people. Tea is good, but don't bother with the food. Also it is very overpriced.

Lovely place for a meeting , and the sandwiches were superb. However, some fans or aircon could have been installed. Came during heatwave and nearly passed out.

Yuck, what a disgusting place! Stumbled upon one Sunday afternoon. Had an awfully cooked and overpriced brunch with coffee I couldn’t finish due to milk being curdled. Tables were visibly unclean. Huge shame. Will never return. Feel sick after leaving.

What a lovely spot. Close to Hampstead Heath. If you are around on a sunny day, it's definitely the place to go.

Charming cafe, lovely garden. Fantastic blue China, ever so slightly mismatched, stylishly so. Carrot cake was a generous portion, although slightly too savoury for my( admitedly saccharine) tastes.

What makes this special, apart from the food, is the number of outdoor tables, many of which are tucked in small nooks in the garden, providing some privacy. My leek tart was "homemade", certainly not from a factory.

It needs a better queueing method. Food and drink good value for the area and service pleasant and efficient.

Great people watching, great hearing the prima donna staff arguing and nice coffee and carrot cake. There is inside and outside seating. I never visit Burgh House without going to the cafe. The house is free to visit but please leave a donation. The shop is tiny but always has something interesting to buy.

Disappointing about their non-existing vegan options . They advertise a “plant-based soup” but it comes with a scone full of cheddar and a pot of butter.. I don’t think they are aware of what vegan is..

The staff clearly hate working there. It took 30 minutes to get coffee, and half the people in the queue gave up. The girl serving was incredibly grumpy. Much prefer the staff at Nero - efficient, friendly, and know how to make coffee.

Chaotic system: I had to queue 2 times (each time longer than 10 mins) just to order simply because everything my friend picked are GONE. I had to go back to the table, re-take my friend's order and queue again, and being told the new thing we wanted to order is GONE AGAIN. (After I checked with him what's available on the menu each time) And this is happened on top of the fact that all the hot food need to wait for 40 mins. Bad Service: When I was queuing for the 3rd time, at the end of line, the staff came and asked me to take the drink back to the table first. I stated that I'd rather not to join a longer queue after I queued twice. He still insisting until my friend showed up and checking if everything's alright. Then the staff instead of taking our order first, he asked us to go back to the table, as he'll come to our table and take the order. ("I'll make this super easy for you, I promise" as he said) He showed up after 37 mins, literally. And me and my friend already decided that we might as well just share my plate (which hasn't appear yet just so you know) coz we don't want to wait another 40 mins on top of all this. Extra Surprise: When we thought this is the worst: the ONLY HOT FOOD I managed to order still hasn’t being served after 1 hour. My friend went to the counter and check, the staff said the food is on the way. Then, the chef shows up at our table, and ask what we ordered. I took their flyer of wedding venue coz Burgh House is a nice place. But I left the flyer at the cafe table after seeing what their catering team is capable of. This is literally the longest review I’ve written, but seriously, if you can’t handle the logistics to run a proper kitchen, you should’ve just serve coffee and cakes or salad. There were similar reviews all the way back to months ago, which only tells that this cafe has no intention to improve.

Cream teas discontinued, hot chocolate with marshmallow unavailable, scones and cakes sold out an hour before closing time. Clearly understocking on everything means that they only get 3 stars from me. If they were a little less parsimonious, they could easily have got 5 stars for location, ambience, and service!

Cute place, but the head(?) chef was arguing and shouting at one of the staff members on my visit, right in front of me - which was very uncomfortable. I felt bad for the staff member. The food was okay, but it’s quite chaotic in there.

Lovely quaint little courtyard/garden like place surrounded by lovely plants. You can also sit under a large canapy decorated in pretty little lights. Great peaceful atmosphere. About the food... Great for either breakfast or lunch. Meals are plentyful, tasty and well presented. You have to order your food at the cashier's desk yourself and sometimes collect it yourself too. There's a semi waiters service. We have been many times and great on a summer's day.

A lovely, slightly out of the way place, but still in the heart of Hampstead, to meet friends, have a coffee and eat a wonderful selection of cakes. Peaceful and quiet and if it rains, you will be under cover although outside. Burgh House also has a small museum and art gallery.

The Burgh House in Hampstead has a cafe in the lower floor, serving brunch, lunch and afternoon tea, kids welcome. The food is great and has an awesome garden terrace and cosy inside space. They offer Roast Sunday lunch and scrumptious hot food. One of my favourites are their fresh scones baked daily as well as delicious homemade cakes and tarts There is a brunch and they have highchairs and smaller food portions for kids, plus loose-leaf teas, roasted coffee and decadent hot chocolate This is a real jewel very close to The Heath.

Liked the layback atmosphere here, especially the out door seatings. So does everyone,and it can get busy sometimes. It's a perfect place to have your cuppa after a walk in Hamstead Heath.
