Golden City in Tewkesbury

Food ordered for delivery with details of delivery address and instructions that I’d be outside the apartment which is only three doors down the road. Ordered for 6.30, at 6.50 walked to the restaurant and was told my food was “on its way” - food arrived just before seven with a delivery lad on a bicycle who “was not familiar with the area and didn’t know we were so close!” It was cold of course. Duck pancakes were served with cucumber and carrot instead of the spring onions noted on the menu. We’ve used Golden City for years but won’t be bothering again.

The food was tasty but we are only in the next village and the hangover box arrived pretty cold which was disappointing. The smoked chicken was actually stone cold. I think they need to rethink packaging when it's a delivery to keep it warmer

Had a hangover box which included a chicken curry, 1 more chicken curry and some chow mein. The chicken curry tasted nothing like a curry, it seemed more of a mixture of sweet and sour and curry ,smelt disgusting, only ate it as was so hungry and should really have taken it back, certainly will not be going there again .

Food was really bad. Chicken a weird congealed mushy texture. Chips were like McDonalds fries overcooked in old oil. Egg fried rice had almost no egg in it. Overall a big disappointment. This is the only Chinese in the area which is probably the only reason it’s still open.

I've not had a Chinese takeaway for years as my wife cooks a pretty mean chow mien, however with the arrival of twin grandkids we decided to treat ourselves. We weren't disappointed tasty food delivered promptly, YUM!

Absolutely disgusting food was nasty

Most disgusting meal I’ve ever had which I waited over an hour for after the delivery time I was given. Food was cold, chicken was tough, chips were like rubber. If there were minus stars they’d get the whole lot. If we don’t get food poisoning it will be a miracle. Leo the manager offered us a free meal or discount on another order but that won’t be happening any time soon. Definitely not recommended one bit.

I popped in yesterday new year's eve knowing everyone will want a takeaway and wasn't sure how busy they would be. Initially I was told it would be hours before I could receive my order but the manager asked how many it was for I said two people 2 dishes one spring roll. He was very kind and squeezed us in. The phone kept ringing and they were mega busy with pre orders. One day I hope to eat in in 2021. Best Chinese in local area. Cheers

We ordered a takeaway for 7.30 for New Years Eve and we are still waiting for it to arrive at 8.00I rang the take away and no apology but the said It was just being bagged up and would be with us in15 mins. We are still waiting.I rang again and according to the person I spoke to it had not been started yet and would be another45 minutes. Such poor service and we have paid for delivery. The take away eventually arrived at 9.05 and I have to say was not worth the wait. It was cold and the chicken satay and chow Marin were dry. So disappointing when we have to spend this New Year’s Eve at home. All you want to do is make it special and this meal was such a let down

Mostly they are OK, but twice they've let me down. Once very badly when I booked a table for ten and the food just didn't arrive at the table in any sort of timely manner. Some dishes were just missing, or cold, and we had main meals coming out of the kitchen with starters at the same time. But just recently a delivery order for two, which included chicken chow mein that had no chicken in it, (and I do mean *no* chicken! Not just a little bit, but none at all. Just a box of noodles), and egg fried rice which wasn't even fried and had just the mearest smidge of egg in it. Basically a box of boiled rice. I won't complain about the mixed starter, which was lovely. This is just unacceptable in a high competition environment. In future I shall go elsewhere.

I was glad to be back here after an epic lockdown. They are coping well in the new normal. I enjoyed the sweet and sour pork balls and special chow mein. I liked their pancake roll. The wife less so but overall a good value and quality meal

We always order from White Horse in Gloucester but unfortunately they were closed due to flooding. We ordered a delivery from here and firstly noticed it was in a bag half the size of our usual takeaway albeit a bit cheaper (although after they had added the delivery charge on it was the same). The portions were tiny but it didnt matter as the food was disgusting. The rice was an odd colour and congealed. The sweet and sour chicken contained more peppers than chicken, crispy chilli beef wasn't crispy and the chicken chow mein bland. I called the restaurant twice, the first time put on hold before I could utter a word then cut off and the second time the phone just rang and rang. The ONLY positive was the friendly delivery girl. Just awful, inedible slop. Avoid this place at all cost.

We were visiting the area and chose this restaurant based on reviews and we were not disappointed. We were well looked after by the staff and the meal was excellent. Well worth a visit!

They are extremely busy but they still make time to remember everyone’s names and make conversation. It makes you feel important to them, that your business is important to them. The manager is a delight! The food is out of this world and we’ve never had a bad experience (we order for between 4 & 10 people every weekend) and we do a 20 minute drive each way to pick it up, it’s that good! We have closer takeaways but they aren’t a patch on Golden City. They aren’t perfect and do sometimes make mistakes, but I think the important thing is how they deal with those mistakes; and they deal with them brilliantly. Give them a call with any issues and if they can’t fix it immediately they will definitely make it right in a way you’re happy with. Won’t go anywhere else for our Saturday night takeaway anymore.

Probably the worst Chinese ever. Greasy food. Everything warmed up. Even prawn toast are frozen! The special fried rice was far from special.

They say they deliver, but when you phone they don't deliver on weekends....make it obvious on your website then! How much money you are losing because of this.

This restaurant/take out is very popular and having ordered a number of dishes, I can understand why! The dishes are plentiful and delicious. The only starter I was a little disappointed with was the wan tons: they were tiny and only 4 of them 😪 The schezuan king prawn with the mushroom rice was amazing and the 4 vegetable spring rolls as a starter were so good!! Will definitely be ordering from this great place again! 😁

This is my local Chinese restaurant. Been coming here for years and the food never disappoints. Genuinely we haven’t had better Chinese food anywhere. Often have takeaways but the best experience is to sit down and have Leo suggest something that isn’t in the menu. Highly recommended.

Absolutely terrible, table booked for 6pm, food arrived at 8.30pm, virtually inedible, no drinks offered, but grudgingly received £4.50 off of a£54.50 bill. Very magnanimous considering I ate nothing. Certainly won't be recommending this place to anyone!

Entramos alrededor de las 6. 45. Ya había bastantes personas en el restaurante. Les preguntamos si tenían una mesa y se disculparon diciendo que sí, pero nos importaría usar una mesa para seis. No nos importó por supuesto. Luego procedieron a tomar dos sillas para hacer más espacio para nosotros, lo cual fue muy complaciente con ellos. Elegimos tres platos entre nosotros. No tardó mucho en llegar. Cuando llegaron estaban muy bien presentados. Se veían virtualmente "bonitos" Estábamos muy impresionados. También sabían increíble. Nunca hemos tenido un arroz frito con tan buen sabor. Los otros dos platos eran igualmente deliciosos. Es una pena que no vivamos en este hermoso pueblo. Lo usaríamos todo el tiempo. ¡Incluso hacen comida para llevar!Recomendamos encarecidamente esta joya cerca de Cheltenham.

Fab customer service, food is perfect every time. Never hesitate when my partner says about going here. He said the squid was cooked to perfection and reasonably priced. Would highly recommend the food here is delicious every time!

Have just finished eating another superb Chinese from Leo at the Golden City. Tried their squid and one of their hangover boxes both for the first time today, and was definitely not a regret.

I came here for a take away. The service was friendly and able to talk about the menu. There was a large selection of dishes which was great to see.

I went here this evening as my usual Chinese takeaway was closed. The food was awful, the pancake roll and chicken balls were greasy and the Yung Chow Fried Rice was tasteless and stodgy. Most of it ended in the bin.

This isn't so much a restaurant as a take away with a few tables. The staff were nice and service prompt. It was limited menu ab perfectly pleasant. We had two mains and rice for £22 so good value

Restaurant was buzzing last night and phone was ringing off the base. great Tofu in chilli black bean sauce with fantastic noodles. Mr had a mixed seafood which was delicious. can't wait to go back

The food was superb. The staff were friendly and helpful. One of the top of my list of Chinese Restaurants that I have visited. We shared a combination of crispy seaweed, chicken skewers, prawn toast, spare ribs, vegetable rolls. For the main course I had the Golden City Mixed Meat Noodles whilst my husband had the Crispy, Spicey Chicken with Friend Rice. We both had the Toffee Banana Fritters with Vanilla Ice cream.

Horrendous! Took over an hour to arrive which they didn’t let me know had to ring three times. Duck completely dry and cold worst I have ever had. Rang to complain to only be shouted at by the manager!!!! Save your money for somewhere else

Always fabulous food served here. Varied choices and have to say Leo, the owner, will cook to order anything that you fancy especially if you are gluten free etc. Never been disappointed and have been visiting for years.

Ordered takeaway from here. They were busy, so had to wait to pick it up, but it was a Saturday night so to be expected. Food again was excellent, with good size portions. Really must eat in the restaurant next time.

We have been ordering takeaways from Golden City for many years but had never eaten in the restaurant before. We visited early on New Years Eve and were the first of the night's bookings. We were made very welcome and chose a number of dishes from the menu along with soft drinks. Everything was prepared quickly and we really enjoyed it all. Would highly recommend for both meals and takeaways.

We selected this restaurant based on previous reviews on TA. The decor inside was essential but nice. A nice friendly Chinese guy looked after us during the meal. Yuk sung for 2 was tasty in the Iceberg lettuce leaves. Main course was king prawns and scallop in a hot pot with ginger and spring onions. Tasty but i was expecting this dish to blow me away. King Prawns fried rice was very nicely executed. Wife had plain noodles with shredded beef. Overall we were satisfied as service was very nice and polite. Not the cheapest Chinese we ever had but we could tell there was quality and care in what they do.

I can say it’s the most delicious Chinese food I’ve had in a long while! Service was superb, lovely quiet little setting, cold beer absolute dream! Thank you Leo and the staff!

Best Chinese restaurant for miles, the food is out of this world, the staff are so friendly and professional, nothing is too much trouble. Leo, the owner is the star of the show and a real crowd puller, with his personable approach and fantastic customer service and attention to detail. We love it here and will be back very soon

What a great Chinese!! Prices are very reasonable and the good is delicious. We sat in the beautifully decorated restaurant and were treated like family. A good laugh and plenty more of fun. The staff were very attentive and there were no problems at all.

We went to this Chinese restaurant while visiting friends on the area. A lovely welcome was given and the staff were friendly and attentive. A good value local Chinese restaurant. The sizzling dishes were excellent.

It helps a bit that the Golden City is local, but I wouldn't go back if it wasn't also good. A wide selection of dishes on the menu, and friendly staff. Best to order in advance, if you want to avoid a wait, especially weekends, as it is usually busy. You can also order delivery, and that's normally efficient too.They have a restaurant as well, but I've never tried it - takeaway is just too convenient. Good value, decent portions and all cooked to order.

The Golden City Chinese is well established in Churchdown, located next to the Old Elm Inn (formerly the Bat & Ball) on Church Road. They offer a good menu offering a wide choice to suit most tastes. The take away service is well organised, phoning your order in saves waiting around, although sometimes the order isn't easy at the time stated this is because it is being freshly cooked so is worth the wait, you can always have a drink while you're waiting! Although known by most as a Take Away they do have a restaurant, the food an service is good. Portions are generous and the food is always good. The Staff are very friendly and helpful even at busy times.

We visited the restaurant last month and it was good. So we decided to come back with the whole family. What a mistake. The restaurant takes second priority over the takeaway so visiting on a Friday or Saturday is not recommended. We waited over an hour for our starters whilst takeaway customers came and went. We were the only customers in the restaurant. The waiter was nice but dropped our prawn toast and it was only replaced because we asked. 4 of the 5 drinks ordered from the menu were unavailable. After over an hour and a half of waiting, we had little choice but to leave. The staff were very friendly but the restaurant seemed to lack any kind of organisation.Such a shame.

I don't know what it is but being tucked inside an old community centre doesn't fill me with expectation but every time I come here I am really impressed by the food.Really well presented and great taste. The service could be a bit more attentive: it took us a while to attract attention so we could order, but otherwise great.

This use to be my local, although i have moved we still travel 20mins to get a Chinese from here as we think it is the best in Gloucester!

We have eaten at this Chinese lots of times and we love it .The food is bluming brilliant and the staff are pretty dam good too . we highly recommend it to anyone from anywhere .

I had 13 people visit for a birthday celebration in the private room with a big circular table. The owner, Leo, had covered the table in happy birthday confetti and put up balloons. The food was fantastic as always (we've been going for the last 3 years). Highly recommended and great to support a local business.

We visited the Golden City based on the excellent reviews it gets, and found that these reviews are more than justified.The place is very busy, so booking is a 'must'. A couple of people who called in 'on spec' while we were there had to settle for a takeaway as no tables were available.The restaurant is staffed by a young, enthusiastic team who obviously take pride in the experience they give their diners. Service was first class from the moment we arrived.The menu is quite extensive and they will also try to provide dishes which aren't on the menu if you ask. The service wasn't the fastest, but the food was obviously all freshly cooked and that's what really matters.The mixed starter platter was excellent, the good quality, fresh ingredients shining through. This was carried over into the main course, the quality and quantity of which made it very satisfying indeed. One of the best Chinese meals I've had, in fact (and I've had a lot!)Overall we had a great evening and we'd definitely return if we were ever in the area again.

Had a takeaway and will never repeat this experience. Arrived luke warm and really poor quality; tasted old like it had been sat around for a while. Save your m9ney and go elsewhere!!

Fantastic service at this restaurant/takeaway and the food is amazing as either a sit down meal or a takeaway.Its a delightful place tucked away in a nice village location and well worth a visit. It has its own licensed bar so you can have a drink while you wait for your takeaway. Excellent customer service which is the icing on the cake!

We order take away from here regularly and everytime we go back its even better than i remember! We spent a few months looking for a good chinese and none we have tried even come close to the quality of the food and service we have become a custom to here. The staff are welcoming and friendly and remember our lil odd order of chicken balls and curry sauce among other things. Never had a bad experience here in more visits than i care to count. Would fully recommend this to anyone looking for the best Chinese in Gloucestershire in my opinion.

Hard to please a large group of people with a range of preferences and tastes. But the quality was high across a wide variety of dishes and everyone seemed to enjoy the experience. Service was a little on the slow side but when served, the food was fresh, hot and very tasty.

Next door to a large pub in a village just outside of Gloucester and not the place we would normally look for a good Chinese Restaurant. The residents of Churchdown have a gem in their midst.Some friends recommended this and we are glad they did. This is a small restaurant, so booking is probably advisable but it was fairly quiet on our mid-week visit.Four of us opted for the set meal for four at a cost of £50 which was good value.The food was excellent and the service helpful, friendly and efficient.We shall certainly certainly visit again to sample more of the menu.

First time to try the restaurant and had a great meal, well cooked and good size portions. Service is excellent very friendly and will to accommodate. So if there are things you don't like let them know. I will go again.

Thinking of moving to the area so thought we should try the local restaurants. We were seated straight away and brought complimentary prawn crackers. Drinks and food was served quickly and the service was good. Soup was outstanding; mains were nice. When we move to the area I'd be happy to have this as my local Chinese.

Visited here as a last minute decision and our expectations were high.Unfortunately food was very disappointing.Spring roll was soggy and lacking any beansprouts.Foo Yung was grey in appearance and pork chop suey was awful colour and again severely lacking in beansprouts.Rice portion was meagre. Will definitely not be back.

Im sorry to say.... Call for a pick up takeaway.Told an hour, fine, as we know we have had good food in the past.Well what we collected at 8.45 on a saturday night was awful... 20 quid wasted...no point complaini g at 9pm. Wish id had chicken dippers an chips with the kids at 7pm ...

Last minute booking, busy takeaway but quiet restaurant when we arrived. Unfortunately it soon became too much for the staff to cope with. Food lovely, grilled pork dumplings devine ! Staff struggled to keep up with demand but don't think it will put us off visiting again. Starter, mains and a couple of drinks £60 , fair price.

Don't be fooled by the outside of this little Chinese restaurant/takeaway. It doesn't look particularly special from the outside, but the food is great. I called in for a takeaway and all the staff were friendly and efficient. Everything we ordered was good, in particular, the Singapore Noodles were fantastic - very hot with fresh chilli - rather than a mass of curry powder. We also had a couple of dishes with king prawns, and instead of the usual few prawns and lots of vegetables, they had generous portions of prawns.The food was freshly cooked, and as a takeaway, I couldn't fault it. Would definitely return and recommend.

Went with a fairly large group but nothing was too much trouble for the staff there, comfortable seating with quick attention to us as customers, rapid service and excellent food. The owner and staff were keen to ensure that we left fully satisfied. There were parking problems but these were surmounted. Highly recommended

Been here before a few times and always had great food. Did not disappoint this time. Brought some friends who had not eaten there and they were all impressed. Very high quality food even though the restaurant was packed out.

We decided to take a friend for a surprise birthday meal having eaten here before in the past we knew it was great food but this time they surpassed themselves.Freshly cooked and bursting with flavour the Squid with chilli starter was fantastic, all the dishes were well balanced, light and full of flavour, the extra surprise dish of deep fried mushrooms were wonderful they really need to put that on the menu!The staff were attentive and extremely friendly so a great time had by all thank you!
