Very disappointed. We've been before and it was really nice but this time it was really poor. The service was good and the pub itself is nice but the quality of the food for the price we paid was not acceptable. Soup was over seasoned and the nachos were terrible. A real shame but we won't be back unfortunately.

We visited Hams Hame previously on our trips to St Andrews and always thought the food was great. However, on our recent trip the food was thoroughly disappointing. The nachos were soggy when previously they’d been some of the best nachos I’d ever had. Then the Mac and cheese had no taste and was very bland, I didn’t even get half way through the portion as it was not good. The sticky toffee pudding sauce wasn’t warmed properly either. It’s a real shame considering previously the food had always been so tasty and to a good standard. It has gone from being a staple place to eat when we visit St Andrews to somewhere we aren’t sure we’d visit again. The staff were friendly and kind and it’s not their fault the food was below standard. However, the food and how it is cooked needs reviewing.

Pros * Food was good. Steak pie was tasty and filling. Curry also got the thumbs up. * venue nice and toilets were lovely (always judge a venue based on their loo’s) * staff friendly & attentive Cons * pastry topper for steak pie could have been warmed a little more. * atmosphere - this place should be jumping due to the location, so it’s a bit of a shame. The background music needs changing, and the drinks prices compared to other venues are on the dear side. I would come back (visited on other occasions), but I wouldn’t rush back unless the atmosphere improved.

Although the staff were lovely I have to say we were very disappointed with the cost and quality of the food and drinks provided. I am more than happy to pay £18.50 for a meal but not when you only get 5 bits of butter chicken in a curry and a spoonful of rice and a mini naan. £18 for a chicken parmigiana that was over cooked and dry with a tasteless pasta was hugely overpriced as was £11 for a glass of house Rose and £8.50 for a pint of lager - the saving grace was the truffle and Parmesan fries at £7 and the fudge ice cream recommended by our lovely young female waitress which came in a pre-packed tub - golf in the multiple TVs which you’d expect I suppose in St Andrews but a bit of background music may have enhanced the atmosphere a bit. All in all - 4 bus journeys to and from Kirriemuir to St Andrews and £83 for a mediocre lunch date did not make for a day trip we’d be in a hurry to repeat unfortunately.

Brilliant! How can anyone give less than 5 stars? Firstly we went for a drinks reception - thanks Stuart & Pam. service excellent from all staff, nothing too much trouble. Then we went for a walk to see the town, but came back for something to eat. My fish & chips was great with a Guinness. The service was spot on and not too intrusive. The best bit was the bill. NO SERVICE CHARGE, NO GRATUITY ADDED, NO COVER CHARGE!! Isnt this the way it should be?? So, of course, we left a tip. Tipping is for great food & service. To add a (discretionary) service charge sucks. Thank you Hams Hame for this and everything else.

Went twice last week to Hams Hame and had the best service ever with Jori, she was phenomenal. We were a party of 10 on a golf trip to St. Andrews and from the minute we first walked in, she anticipated all of our needs and moved us into more of a private dining area of the pub. Jori provided everyone fantastic service, all the drinks we needed and excellent food recommendations. On our last night there, she special ordered sirloin steaks ( for those that wanted them) and the meal was cooked perfectly. Jori provided outstanding service with an extremely positive attitude and was the best waitress I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.

Prices are high and the food is mediocre. Steak in steak sandwich was literally uncooked (as in not rare but improperly cooked). Nachos were a bland joke and for £10 too. Didn’t want to bother complaining but in all honesty waiter picking up plates looked at the uneaten raw steak and should have taken the initiative on taking that off the bill. Positives are that the decor gives character to the place. Much appreciated that they are trying to have a varied menu because St Andrews has virtually no variety besides a few cuisines on offer. For example, pleasantly surprised to find something like Lamb Flatbread. Only Italian and Asian foreign cuisines in this town so nice to see someone trying to provide a bit of Mediterranean.

Fantastic food and excellent service, the venue is beautiful. The only minor remark is kids portion sizes are rather large for little diners in my opinion, my 7 year old son has good appetite but was full after the starter, barely touched main and didn't even have space for a desert! Perhaps smaller portions at half a size with a reduced price tag would be more appropriate; or if staff can explain in advance that portions are big so simply one starter or one main is more than enough. Other than that this place is a gem.

WARNING. If you decide to order the “3 sides for £11” you must inform your server at the time of ordering. Yes, apparently saying to a server that you “want to order 3 sides please” means that they’ll insist on charging each item individually because you weren’t explicit in telling them you were ordering the deal off the menu. Similarly, they advertise a honey & pineapple Margarita cocktail but if you ask for a classic margarita, you’ll be charged the individual spirit prices resulting in a charge 25% more because it’s not a featured cocktail (no mention of this at time of ordering). There are so many friendly places to eat and drink in St Andrews but with these jobsworths in operation behind the bar, we’ll never darken the door of this place again.

Conveniently located in St. Andrews, we came here for an early meal on a Monday night. Family of four plus dog. Staff here were brilliant. Brought out a bowl of water for the dog right when we arrived and were attentive and friendly throughout the evening. The kitchen muddled up one of our orders so the staff were incredible apologetic and rectified quickly. Sadly the food left a lot to be desired. The menu is extensive so you’ll find something for everyone, but found the quality of the food sub par. The burger was wayyyy over cooked and chewy and the chips were very very oily. Two of us ate an early lunch. At first we were concerned by the lack of clientele but as the lunch time progressed the rooms filled to capacity. With a typical pub decor and a typical menu there was nothing memorable about the establishment other than the staff, who were exceptionally friendly, able and willing. The lamb Flatbread was a goodly portion but missing the anticipated flavor, but the scotch broth was pretty good. That black and tan was at a perfect temperature. Located in the basement of the Old Course Hotel the ambiance was blah and there was no view.

I recently had an extremely unpleasant experience at Hams Hame, and I feel compelled to share my disappointment and frustration with others. It was an evening that left me feeling humiliated and discriminated against due to their discriminatory wealth-based entrance policy. Upon arriving at Hams Hame with a group of friends, we were excited to enjoy an evening out together after our first round of golf on our golf trip. However, after asking for a table for 7, It quickly became apparent that the sole reason we were being denied entry was that we did not meet their arbitrary standards of wealth. What makes this situation particularly egregious is that the pub was far from crowded. Plenty of space was available inside, and we were simply looking to have a good time like any other patron. However, it seemed that the pub's priority was not providing an inclusive and welcoming environment, but rather catering exclusively to the affluent. My experience here was profoundly disappointing and disheartening. I would caution anyone seeking a welcoming and inclusive environment to think twice before considering this establishment.
