Horse and Jockey in Manchester

We visited on a Saturday evening after a day out in Manchester. The food was great. We had fish and chips, lasagne and a burger. All were delicious, well priced, with good portions size. Staff were friendly and there was a pleasant atmosphere.

We arrived late on Sunday with the kitchen about to close. One of us couldn't get our first choice of meal, so chose again from the menu. The food arrived quickly and was very tasty and hot. I took Hannah's recommendation for the Manchester pink gin and lemonade (light on the lemonade and double). And it was delicious. I would definitely go there again.

I went here for a traditional Sunday roast. The staff were pleasant and accommodating, but with the food, I was disappointed. Where was the roast potatoes? A traditional favourite. The roast beef was nice but the dinner as a whole, could have been better, if they went with tradition. I asked where was the roast potatoes only to be told the potatoes on my plate were boiled in there skins then pan fried. I wanted a roast dinner not a fry up.

Had a fantastic meal (chicken). Landlord & staff very friendly. Nice pint of Trailblazer, & welcoming atmosphere. Will definitely call again.

Had such a lovely afternoon with my friends and our dogs. The best surprise was a Santa’s grotto complete with Santa and Ellie the Elf. We had a magical afternoon!!

Friendly staff and lovely setting . Food was not good at all . We opted for Sunday lunch - the meal was Luke warm and veg tasteless . The Yorkshire pud look spectacular and were huge but again luke warm and the bottoms like pancake mix . The vegetarian roast was a mush and flavourless plus it looked unappetising. Service was very slow - we’d been in an hour and ten minutes and just had our starter . Really disappointing and wouldn’t go back .

As we arrived, we went to the bar ordered drinks then we were seated at our table. Our server was a lovely girl named Gaby, her customer service was excellent. She was friendly and professional. We ordered a selection of small plates menu.. like a Tapas… food was excellent.. very welcome by Gaby she is a great addition to this bar. Thank you .

Lovely Sunday lunch - my girlfriend had roast beef and all the trimmings, I had the pulled beef brisket hash. Great food, plenty of menu options, polite/friendly service, good beer, great location, ticked all the boxes basically.

At least Dick Turpin wore a mask when robbing you of your money.£4.70p for a pint of Holt's bitter/ It is not that much in town and is only £3.20 in my local.

Dry burger, dry tasteless bun, overpriced, warm white wine, incredibly uncomfortable outdoor seating.

Lovely pub with the BEST pies in the world. My cheese and potato pie with cheese sauce was superb and my friend loved his steak and ale pie too. And really reasonable prices. Great environment especially in the sun!

£8.95 for a small bottle of Prosecco which is effectively a glass and a half at most. Absolute rip off - hang your heads in shame.

Most tables pre laid for dining. Drinkers directed to sit outside even when tables are free! Not really a pub any longer.

We have been visiting the horse and jockey for years . Yesterday we went to he pub and ordered food . My husband had a. Pizza with hardly any toppings . I had a salad which was mainly lettuce and mint and a small portion which was £ 11.25 . Very poor value for money . It needs to revamp there menu and offer better value for money if they expect people to return for food .

We have been going to The Horse & Jockey for many years with friends for a meal & drinks, but our last visit was very disappointing. The food menu had very little choice compared to the way it used to be, just to single out one example only one steak on the menu! They also used to have a good selection of top branded beers, San Miguel, Staropramen etc, but now if you don't like Holts beer or crafted beers, you're going to struggle!! We always booked our table to avoid disappointment, but there were only two other tables in use with zero atmosphere, the bar was virtually empty and this was on a Saturday night! They need to go back to the way they were with a good choice on the menu and a good choice of top branded beers!!

Monday evening ' 7 family members called in for a bite to eat ' Ordered fish meals' to be told there was no fish as its Monday ? ' also they had a new chef and he had not ordered any ' We were told this weeks ago before the new chef started ? ' It seems that the beginning of the week you can't have fish ' ( very strange ) So we changed our orders to Bangers and Mash an old classic ' Yet again we were told no !! ' The reason given was There was no mashed potato ?? But we could have boiled potato or Chips ? Is Mashed potato not a potato ?? ' The sad thing was the take it or leave it attitude of the staff !!!! When our you going to get staff who really care and a Manager who can Manage !!

We pre-booked a table for 9 people for a New Years Day lunch. We were advised it was a 45 minute wait, we were happy to wait. After 45 minutes half of the meals arrived, mostly cold. We waited for the rest, nothing. After 20 minutes or so we asked where they were. Apparently the tables were mixed up & either our food wasn’t made or had been given to someone else. They gave us the exact money back for the 5 meals we didn’t get & a £25 voucher. No real apology. Shocking service, so incredibly disappointed that a family New Year’s Day ended with 5 unfed.

We have been to the H&J many times and have found it to be good. They do a great Sunday roast, so we thought, they can't ruin a Christmas Day lunch. We were wrong. We found our table from some plans left on another table and seated ourselves as no one came to see us when we arrived. It was busy with other diners and patrons. It took about 30 minutes before someone came over. The meal was an hour and 15 minutes late. The food was barely warm, with not an ounce of luxury about it. Some of the dishes were not the same as their description in the pre-booked menu and we had to check in case of allergies. I could go on but I won't. I don't really want to relive the experience. Our server, James, was good and handled our feedback really well when he asked if everything was okay. Everything else was just poor. Communication was terrible. There was no acknowledgement they were running behind/busy/down on staff - just tell your customers something. We had elderly parents and young children in our group. I had to approach staff twice. I won't be back. Ever.

That actual building is nice but food took nearly 40 minutes for 2 meals to show up, vegan lasagna wasnt a lasagna at all, just pasta and veg with a bit of cheese, jackfruit balti had little/no flavour, no check back and when the plates were collected we still weren't asked, just 'is this done with' i know its a pub but still no excuse for the food to be done poorly and if you cant offer vegan food that's tasty, don't bother offering it

Visited for a family meal on NYD table booked for 12.30, we ordered food at around 12.45 we were still waiting an hour later. We had a 4 year old type 1 diabetic with us who needed food, the staff were fully aware of this. We had to get crisps for her to ensure she didn’t become poorly. Food started arriving just before 2pm but not everyone’s food my partner had eaten his before I even got mine. The food was average at best and the staff couldn’t give a stuff no apology was given and we had to ask for cutlery 3 times and to add insult to injury we went to order 2 children’s ice creams at 2.30pm to be told they were no longer serving food!!! Are you actually taking the mick?! Absolutely livid that a family meal for someone’s birthday was overshadowed by disgusting service and subpar food! I’m sure you will have gathered but I won’t be returning and will be telling friends and colleagues that live local to stay well away!!

Worst experience ever. Arrived, there were empty tables with dishes piled up. Decided to sit down at one nevertheless. Waitress walked past several times without asking if she could clean the table. Eventually had to ask the waitress to clear it. Then ordered food which took 45 minutes to arrive. We ordered 2 buttermilk chicken burgers which arrived without any coleslaw as indicated on the menu. Questioned the waitress about it and only then got told that they’ve ran out. Had to ASK for cutlery and serviettes. Not acceptable

We have been here many times since our last review but it 12 months since I have commented on it. So i just wanted to reiterate that after 12 months this is still a lovely place to have a meal and a good night out. The food was and still is terrific and good value for money as it was served hot and tasted very good. I had the steak for a change and the rest pf our group all had different but were equally as good. We did lousy on the quiz mind you although it was good fun. The only issue i had was that they didn't allow us to run a tab and had to pay as we went along.

This pub used to serve the best roast dinners around but we visited for the first time since it has “changed hands” and were disappointed to find that the food has dropped to wetherspoon standards. The place was half empty on a Sunday afternoon which suggests we’re not the only people who aren’t impressed by the changes.

Had a lovely christmas lunch here, excellent food and portions were much larger than expected for a lunchtime menu. Staff were professional and service was very good. Really good value for money. Lovely atmosphere.

I've been here many times and recently it has been taken over so we thought we would go and see what it was like. We reserved a table last Saturday and told the waitress who then basically asked us to look for our own table. When we found a table and were settled she then told us that she had found our reserved table! Such organisation!! We stayed where we were. Food had to be ordered and paid for at the bar, no tabs were allowed! At 8pm they had already run out of wine glasses - good planning! The food was very average and at nearly 9.30pm we wanted to order desserts however we were told that it was too late, the kitchen was closed!

Had our first Christmas lunch in Horse and jockey on 29th November. The food was excellent, served by very professional waiting staff. Would definitely recommend. Excellent value for money. I may well be returning here to sample there ordinary menu, if there Christmas food is this good can't wait to try there pub grub.

Ive never used trip advisor before but seen many advertisements in the pub so thought I’d give it a go. I have been a customer at the jockey for years and years and seen many managers come and go. Have had a few decent ones and obviously with the turn around of managers a few bad ones. Food is like weatherspoons staff look dead and lifeless, motivation needed from up top. Been a few times I’m watched as I’ve ate alone on a Sunday as they work so hard and I’m guessing they get no gratification. Holts have no idea how to run it and it’s sad because it has so much potential. The manager is the face of the pub and she’s never there or always avoiding serving people at the till (which has happened to me many times) very sad to watch one of my favourite locals go down the ditch. I love the staff there’s a few that have been there for a few years now always friendly considering the staff turn over too. Always a good pint food isn’t always spot on but cheap so hay ho. Make it better again please!

If you just want to order a drink then fine. Very bad service when ordering something to eat. I have an food intolerance which was not listed on the menu and the staff were not helpful. Finally managed to order something to eat after spending 30 minutes waiting at the bar.

Standard of meals is not to their normal high standard. Service seems to be a lot slower at bar and for food. For the first time in years of visits no dog treats

Been here a few times. It's a nice pub, great, lively atmosphere and a good range of beers at fair prices. Dog friendly so there are always a few in there. Nice seating outside with views on the green and friendly chit chat behind the bar.

Top quality food, hospitality and a real cosy feel. We felt totally relaxed and loved what we had from the menu. Have been before on a trip to Manchester and will definitely visit again.
