Tate Modern Cafe: Level 2 in Southwark

I got food poising from the breakfast bar....

Wrote this up as we finished our visit to the the Christmas dinner buffet on Dec 25th. But I needed to remove the profanity before it would go live. Something I said? :) This review is specifically regarding our Christmas dinner at the Art Yard. ---- First of all, the food was old. Not sure how else to put it. The buffet is open until 10 PM, we showed up about 8:30 PM. Clearly the food has ALREADY been sitting out for a couple of hours without being tidied up or refreshed. Bzzt. For example, the main courses have been sitting under heat lamps for hours, Bzzt. The gravy for the mystery meat is nonexistent or clotted. Bzzt. The bread section is depleted, the dessert table looked like it was half eaten, and bits have fallen on the table itself, and the cream filled profiteroles were nice and warm (sarcasm). (Bzzt, etc.) I mean- OK that food has been eaten over the last hour or two, but come on. You need to rearrange the serving dishes/plates so it doesn't look like it's been sitting there for as long as it clearly has been and worked over by Vikings. And no serving utensils. And no dessert plates. Really? The glass of wine I ordered had more sediments at the bottom than a old fish tank. I pointed it out. I had to suggest that maybe they shouldn't charge me for a glass of dregs, and they did reverse that charge. But no comment. No apology? I'm not snobby, Really! But come on. If YOU want to pretend to be a fancy restaurant, then YOU need to pretend to be one. We sat near the entrance from the hotel side, I watched as people came down to order food and were told the the restaurant was closed for the Christmas dinner buffet, even though clearly the restaurant had less than ten people in it. Not hyperbole: the place was nearly empty. Instead of letting people sit and order off the menu, I saw at least half a dozen families/parties order "room service" and stand around until their food was handed to them on a room service tray, and then they left carrying it back to their rooms. I guess it's Christmas dinner for them in front of the telly. Nice for your hotel guests, right? Right. Why not let them sit and order and eat and get drinks from the bar? If you managed a restaurant like this, you would let people sit and order and get drinks from the bar and.... What a missed opportunity for customers. So much for attempting conviviality in an empty restaurant on a major holiday. London was packed all week, and this place was empty. What a sad, pathetic, poorly-managed, nearly-inedible, antisocial Christmas Dinner. It's going to be unforgettable, but not really the way you would want a holiday meal to be memorable. And there were plenty of staff, so clearly they weren't short-handed, that wasn't an issue. Somehow they managed to have enough staff to NOT serve guests particularly attentively. WTF. When the waiter asked me if everything was ok, I actually pointed out several of the issues noted above. He said, "I'll tell my manager," but nobody came by to make any excuses, which would have at least been... Well, at least someone making excuses. Nothing. Maybe they don't care about the food/restaurant as a profit center, as the restaurant is part of the hotel? I don't know. The only thing impressive is if (1) I actually don't get sick from the antediluvian cream pastries and (2) they stay in business. Now those would be a Christmas miracle! Enough. People say English food is bad- it wasn't that. It's really just this place. Other reviews are positive, so maybe it was just this night. But it was definitely poor this night. Worst meal of my Christmas week in London was Christmas dinner at this restaurant. Injury to the insult: Total was - wait for it... About $277 US, £220 UK. Wow. That's absurd for a Christmas meal this impressively disappointing. Wow (again). How about a "welcome" glass of wine for your €100 Scheißepalooza buffet customers before the patrons have to suffer this culinary hellscape? Nope. Merry Christmas.

Shocking. I have had a reservation 6 weeks ahead for NYE, then on the same day this restaurant called me to say that it is now 125 per person for a buffet. No time to make any other plans. Shame on these people for doing this to my family. That would be like 1000 for my family. Robbery.

I found this restaurant on CODE, and usually is quite trustworthy, but unfortunately this time was quite a failure. The menu was only for Brunch for a Sunday, and apparently the ALL day was not available, even if as the word suggests should be ALL day; from the brunch menu (not many options available) few course were not available, like French toast, odd since it doesn't not require any special ingredients; they also did not have ciders, muah ok. Service was slow for what we ordered, and food was really average. I should have understood there were issues here from the moment I called to book, and took me 20 minutes on the phone to book for 5 pax at 2 pm (I was thinking almost that they were full, but of course not) . Can't recommend this place to anyone.

Disappointing. We went as a group for brunch. Service was slow despite at arrival being the only table there. It took repeated efforts to get attention. Main complaint though was the food. Absolutely tiny portion - shashuka was one fried egg on top of some tomato sauce. No feta as advertised, one egg despite description noting "eggS" and the smallest toast I've ever had served - honestly about a third of a normal slice of bread. We ordered more bread and were charged £9 for the privilege - for three slices of bread. They also bought out feta when it was pointed out it was missing (but cold squares weren't quite what we expected on ordering!) They did offer a discount, but we also had to ask for an erroneous £15 drink to be removed from the bill, so felt quite laboured to get a reasonable bill. Unimpressive for the price and not much life on a Sunday.

Away from the bustle. Simple menu, well executed in contemporary relaxed surroundings.

We were pleasantly surprised after finding many surrounding places underwhelming.Most places we visited, offered food as an afterthought to ale drinking blabbers loitering everywhere with poor service if you are hungry. We headed back to our hotel and tried the in-house restaurant. Excellent steak and absolutely tasty tortellini. All cooked to perfection well presented, and totally satisfying . Highly recommended.

Very poor service. We got seated, no one got us a menu to look at, just asked us what we wanted to order. We did not feel welcome at all. Food is quite expensive for what you are getting. The squid linguine only had 1 prawn in it. Would not recommend!!!

Bankside is a super modern hotel- I signed a corporate deal here (for the second time) for my company. Staff are fantastic. I’m here every second week:) thanks so much to all of you 🙏🙏 One small suggestion: Please bring back your coffee dock

Sad tasteless food for a high price. Staff is demotivated or stressed.

Decided to drop by here based on the reviews. Service is so slow, and I ordered a salmon dish and it was served with a vegetable which was extremely strong in flavour and also it was so tough. I ordered the toffee pudding and it was served so cold and by this time, coupled with the poor service and lousy food, I flagged down the wait staff to complain that my pudding was cold. They took away my pudding and while waiting, the manager came to ask me if I had a problem. However, his stance was rather defensive so I did not want to create a scene and said I was fine. The pudding came back to me - I had already taken a bite and it was the same pudding, microwaved so high that the ice cream they put in there had melted. They plonked in another scoop of ice cream and that melted as well. Totally shocked for an establishment like this. The food is really ordinary, service very poor - save your money and go elsewhere.

You are better off anywhere locally than here. The food is awful and the service matches it. Bored and disengaged. And why wouldn’t they be. They get their 12.5% irrespective. More importantly, be careful and check your bill before paying. We obviously did not and got overcharged. We called them back the next day.And no, it wasn’t a simple sorry we overcharged we will refund you right away. It began with I wasn’t here, the manager is not available right now, we will call you back etc. litany of excuses. In fact they had the “con”fidence to get a junior staff to call back and give a vague reassurance. I understand restaurants with such poor quality food and overpriced menus must be struggling in the current market. But to cheat and scam and then avoid customers who catch you are all from the playbook of a restaurant that does this all too often and brushes it right under the carpet if issues are raised. After all who has the time and energy to chase after a 10-15% discrepancy in a bill beyond one call. I never heard back from the manager or the restaurant. They should be ashamed. But more importantly, hope this review alerts new customers to check their bill before paying.

This is a public service announcement to avoid this food. The chicken parfait was okay, but the tuna tartar was bland. The mains were awful - we had the squid ink spaghetti and the cod. No seasoning, horrible textures, I even asked the waitress if they had been cooked in a microwave as sometimes you can just tell… the wine was lovely and it was a nice place to sit for a drink, but absolutely avoid the food - London is full of amazing choices, this is just not one of them!

Me and my friend had a great time! One of the best Martini and steak ever, and lovely welcoming from Tsveti and all her colleagues looking after us. Definitely we coming back.

Love the concept , amazing relaxed atmosphere with very attentive service. Good was amazing and great selection of dishes. We will be back!

The beef tartare is pretty good and the truffles fries were decent. Not sure about the cod, but lamb was decent.

We had an amazing breakfast at Artyard Bar and Kitchen. The food was delicious, and the service was outstanding. From start to finish, everything was perfect. The staff were attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Highly recommend this place for a great breakfast experience!

Is this the most dog friendly place in London? :) We visited for brunch having been disappointed by a nearby venue and left feeling so delighted. Location: Great - right on the South Bank close to all the main attractions and stations Ambience: Very cool - busy but not as busy as some of the traps on the riverside. Elevated experience. Food: Amazing quality and fantastic value - we all really enjoyed our selection (personally, best croque madame in London) Service: So attentive from when we arrived to leaving and with such friendly and professional members of the team Dog Friendly: I had my pup with me and I have to say, this was one of the best experiences I've had in London. I'd recommend and return based on that alone. They had beds, food, snacks, attention, different areas of the restaurant to offer - PERFECT

I had a fantastic dinner with my wife at Art Yard Bar & Kitchen. The food was absolutely delicious, the service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was cozy and inviting. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of the meal. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive (not easy to find lately in London) and our food arrived promptly. If you're looking for a great place to enjoy a delicious meal with your loved one, I highly recommend this place.

Pretty unprofessional to have your staff openly arguing with each other in front of customers in the restaurant. Came here at 3pm on a Saturday for brunch. very quiet but service was awful. Staff remembers spent more time arguing with each other about holiday they wanted to take than on serving the (few) customers.

Dopo la mia lunga visita alla Tate Modern si era fatta l'ora di pranzo e ho voluto provare a vedere cosa proponeva il risto bar annesso alla galleria, una discreta quantità di insalate miste cereali oltre lieviti e panini. Ho scelto un'insalatina con anche fagiolini, ceci, frutta secca morbida: buonissima! Questa gustosa ciotola l'ho accompagnata con una spremuta d'arancia fresca. Sono rimasta soddisfatta... E ho ripreso il cammino alla continua, e sempre nuova, scoperta di Londra.

Popped in for Breakfast, hadn't booked - but were given 5* treatment. Eggs Benedict & 3 Egg Omelette - Excellent Coffee - incredibly comfy seating, attentive service, wonderful setting. Will definitely be back.

Superb location, very quiet and unobtrusive. Modern decor. Comfortable casual seating; uncrowded- an oasis of calm in a hectic London on busy Sunday. Air conditioning arctic but staff happily turned down on request. Rather sterile ambience. Food was good, staff obliging but some less experienced than others (e.g.please don’t clear plate of one diner at table when others still eating). Plentiful tables, spacious layout so no overcrowding/overhearing neighbours. Prices reasonable for high season in London. Would definitely return but try main restaurant next time.

Unpleasant welcome, the barmaid spoke to us very aggressively. The tables were not cleared and the toilets were disgusting. My friend ordered a vanilla flavored iced coffee but his coffee had absolutely no vanilla taste. Positive point, the decoration is pretty and the music pleasant.

We had dinner at this place having booked in the late morning. We were a small group with children, great availability and courtesy in managing the two tables differentiated between children and adults. Impeccable service from taking the order to handling a small misunderstanding on a child's order. Tasty and proportionate dishes, correct quality-price ratio.....better if with a discount voucher!

Excellent place to grab a late night dinner on a Sunday. Ravioli was excellent.

£8.50 for slim slice of cheesecake with a few raspberries. English breakfast tea like gnats’ pee. Won’t go again. Tate Britain cafe prices up too. One third of the price at Chelsea College Cafe opposite. Tate M no longer give booklet of info with paid exhibitions. £5 booklet instead.

My partner and I really were excited to go to the breakfast buffet. He has stayed at the hotel multiple times both alone and with his family. When we went the first time the hostess was extremely rude and ignored us the whole time, when she did address us it was snarky and backhanded. It took 20 minutes to get our tea and black coffee. The second time we went they told us “we only have the bar open since you’re not staying at the hotel” even though the ENTIRE restaurant was empty. So we sat down at a table when another waiter offered it to us. Again our tea and coffee took 20 minutes and the hostess gave us disgusted looks the whole time we were there. I am extremely disappointed in the disrespect we both received on multiple occasions and we will NOT be returning.

I can only assume the positive reviews on here are from people in self-denial trying to cope with the embarrassment of having paid such high prices for such awful food. Or maybe the chef had called in sick the night we visited. (One important note, our server was very nice). The asparagus and Burford Brown egg was two pieces of boiled asparagus and a hard-boiled supermarket egg, with a bland green sauce that was completely unseasoned. The salmon was basic; fried, unseasoned, and presented with two more sticks of slightly overcooked asparagus- a meal which would take any inexperienced cook five minutes in their own home. (This was £26 not including sides, except for more tasteless green purée) I could go on. £38 for a small, thin rib-eye (this one came with some salt on it!) and no sides included. I’ve yet to meet anyone that can make a bad rib-eye so this was at least fine. I feel really insulted actually; to be charged money like this, for food inferior to most home cooks and using ingredients which (by the admission of the menu) you can find in Sainsbury’s. Lovely decor! I guess that’s enough for some people, looking at the reviews. Unbelievable that they’re getting away with it to be honest - but it is I think part of a hotel and if anywhere’s doing “hotel food” it’s this place.

This place is awesome, especially if you sit at the bar and watch them make your drinks. The cocktails we had were amazing. The female bartender was super nice, professional, and had really pretty nails. We didn't try the food, but it looked great from what we saw. If you're staying at the hotel, you should definitely check it out. If not, you should still stop by for a drink.

The Art Yard Bar & Kitchen was a let down. They stop making most of their menu at 9pm and force customers onto a bar menu that has very few options The burger was pretty bland; the chips (fries) tasted like they were frozen and not hand-cut. My beer was not very cold. Our waitress disappeared by 9:30 and we had to keep asking other staff members for things. Wouldn't go back, and wouldn't recommend.

A classic captive audience experience. The food was of very poor quality, the coffee was tepid and weak, and all was served in disposalble plates and cups. And it was expensive, the doughnut was £5.50

Great food. Bread is amazing... hot & fresh. We had the ox and the sea bass. Both very good. Ox was especially good, melted in your mouth.

The food is average, the decoration and atmosphere are good. The waiter was warm and friendly but not very professional. The food was served very slowly and one dish was missed.

We had breakfast here whilst stay at a different hotel. Our eggs florentine and eggs Benedict were poor and adequate at best. The hollandaise was curdled and had too much vinegar and the muffin untoasted. Service was fine and my coffee good.

We were looking for a quiet drink and light dinner. We sat at a pleasant table in the bar area and a waiter took our order. 20 minutes later I asked about the drinks and was told they were coming soon. 10 minutes later no drinks, no food. We left, hungry.

Pleasant atmosphere and impeccable staff in cordiality and service, but the hamburgers we ordered were dry, overcooked and tasteless for the price we paid. I expected more creativity, flavour and love.

Great restaurant! The service was top notch and the food was really good. The gnocchi was the biggest fluffiest gnocchi I've ever had. My biggest complaints are just that I hate being made to pay for bread and they only have organic karma colas. Sometimes you just want a diet coke

We arrived late and too tired to enter the city to look for food so we decided to eat at the Bankside's hotel restaurant. The Candyflossmopolitan was good. We tried the pork terrine as a starter and I enjoyed it. The butternut squash and goat cheese gnocchi were outstanding. We also sampled the pavlova, the passion fruit brulee, and the chocolate tart for dessert. Overall the experience was good, if a little overpriced. If you're in the area I would certainly recommend eating here. The breakfast buffet (not pictured) is outstanding.

The salmon is delicious and tender. Chicken breast and pea shoots are super tender together. I really like this delicious food.

This place was the restaurant and bar inside my hotel. I never had the opportunity to have a meal here but I did enjoy two drinks at the bar one late evening. The decor is very nice and the bartender was pleasant. My only complaint is that the drink prices are on the higher end and they add an automatic service charge. There is no background or live music.

Art Yard Kitchen is a good restaurant overall. Their dishes are good, and they are prepared well. I would like to see a bit more flair or creativity in terms of flavor, however, at that price point. The drinks are good as well, with a wide selection of cocktails. The atmosphere is very nice- quiet and relaxed in the late evening. Service was good throughout the meal.

Really rather expensive for what it is, especially when it comes to cocktails and mixers… £16 cocktail ended up being £20 due to service charge AND some other charge that they add for just being there? I didn’t catch what it was called on the receipt but 12.5% of £16 doesn’t make the total bill £20… so they must have added on something else

We are regular visitors monthly to tate Britain and modern and are members over many yearsand try to support tate cafes and restaurants. Pleased to see restaurant was re opened we booked as part of our visit to guston exhibition. Sadly we had no choice but to have 2 course as we were told no we could not just choose one , my friend could not finish his steak and was refused a doggy bag . With 2 waters bill came close to £90 and service charge included for ice cold disappointing service . Sadly we will never return as whole experience felt like a rip off and was huge disappointment, when over years our visits have been wonderful lunches and dinners , something has basically gone wrong. Many places near by serving better choices at more affordable prices , and warmer service .

We have breakfast every morning at our great hotel.. Had a late night burger as well . So good 👍😊
