The Castle in Islington

Poor beer selection and of those half are not available. No staff on today who have been trained how to change a keg. What a shame…

Had a lunch here and we both had the beef and ale pie which wad delicious! Great service too

Very nice pub by Farringdon station

Held a private function at the Castle and had a really great time. The hot buffet food was excellent and service was friendly.

I stumbled into The Castle to avoid the blistering cold whilst waiting for a friend, and ended up staying here for an hour or two. A few rounds of Guiness helped to keep us warm which was decent but on the pricey side. We were a bit peckish and the menu caught our eye, with a wide selection of tasty sounding dishes. We settled on the olives (£4.50) and the fried chicken with chilli honey (£8). The olives were tasty and went down a treat. The chicken, however, was a let down. While the flavour was there, with a great crispy coating and a tasty dipping sauce that paired well with the chilli honey, it was a laughably small portion. Now I’m aware it’s classed as a ‘small plate’, but for £8 we were served just one piece of chicken, rather sadly positioned on an oversized plate which felt stingy, even for london. The service was perfectly fine and the pub itself is pleasant. With plenty of seating and a cosy atmosphere it’s a good place for a catch up with a friend or a spot of people watching. Would I recommend The Castle? If you’re in the area then sure, it’s a good albeit expensive pub that serves good drinks, however if you are going to go for food, just double-check the portion size before you order. Maybe if I’m ever back in the area I’ll give it another chance.

Our work group (around 40) booked the upstairs private room. It was a perfect size for our group, and the food was all delicious. Separate bar for us was perfect. The staff were all very friendly, and were kind enough to go downstairs to bring up cocktails for our party.

We had a lovely meal, and loved the crackers on the table! The staff were all excellent and very friendly. We came last year for the same Christmas meal (same group of friends) and will do the same next year. Thank you!

The food in this pub is shocking! In all my years on this earth, I have never been served boiled potatoes, described as roasted with a Sunday roast! The only half decent thing on my plate was the Yorkshire and nut roast! Crunchy cabbage, a few carrots and something that I believe was part of a parsnip, which all lacked any flavour! It was terrible! We requested the staff have a look at our plate and sent the food back! When it returned there was no difference! Please avoid this place for food.

Brilliant service, lovely pub, excellent staff. Molly and team looked after us all (35 adults and children) for a big Christmas lunch upstairs. It was perfect. Couldn’t recommend them highly enough.

From the moment we arrived, Molly was an incredible host, ensuring our every need was met with a warm smile. The afternoon was filled with mouthwatering a Christmas Fayre that the kitchen staff crafted with skill and creativity, showcasing the best of seasonal flavors. The enormous tree and decorations created an inviting, cozy atmosphere and made the Christmas celebration feel extra special. If you’re looking for the perfect place to host any kind of gathering, I can’t recommend The Castle enough!

We had a table upstairs booked for a Christmas work meal and it was fabulous. Even though downstairs was so busy, upstairs was magical with a lovely festive setting, music on but not too loud, and really attentive and friendly staff. Thanks so much for a really lovely evening.

Beyond disappointed. It was SO over crowded, we had to fight through walls of people to get through the bar area to go upstairs. Our table was being occupied when we arrived on time. It just wasn’t good so we didn’t bother staying, we ended up else where.

I just spent the last fifteen minutes trying to write a decent review about this place, when all that needs to be said is that the bar staff don't care, and the reason this pub still trades is because of how close it is to the station. I worked and lived here for three years in my twenties and I am really sad to say that it is now basically the alcohol version of a Costa. I so wanted for this pub to have evolved in the ten years I hadn't been there. I can confirm that it is the worst. Buy your gins in tins from the closest shop and give it an absolute swerve. However if you want booze, they serve it

This lovely boozer was a chance find on the way out of the tube station. Great atmosphere and a happy crowd filled the period saloon bar with a pleasant buzz. Staff were lovely and the beers were well curated and cared for. Could happily while away a few hours here, the ambience is very soothing.

I was here at lunchtime, and it was a calm and nice atmosphere. And I eat the classic fish and chips and that was really nice 👍🏼 The beer menu was okay. Overall I’m very happy with this restaurant and I can recommend a visit here.

You might be tricked into going into this place since it’s right across the street from the Farringdon station - DON’T. Anywhere would be better than here.

Spend an afternoon in here waiting to go to a gig at Betsy Trotwood. The castle was great a relaxed atmosphere really friendly staff and the TEA beer was wonderful. A great afternoon.

We came there for pre fabric 🥶😅 beers are not the best but ok. People are really welcoming not just the stuff but the guests as well 🥳I will definitely go there once again, as a newcomer to this country I am adding this place to my doitagain list

The Castle in Farringdon is what every London pub ought to be but rarely is. Nestled conveniently near the tube station, it’s the kind of place that should make every other pub in the city hang its head in shame and quietly consider relocating to Milton Keynes. First off, the beer is good. Not "interesting" or "complex" or any of the other nonsense that beard-stroking hipsters use to describe the muck they pretend to enjoy. No, this is just proper beer—cold, crisp, and everything you want after a day spent navigating the sheer lunacy that is London. Now, let’s talk about the clientele. This place isn’t swarming with tourists or locals who’ve been there since the Thatcher era. No, the people here are good-looking—properly good-looking. You could almost believe you’ve accidentally wandered into a GQ photo shoot, except everyone’s holding pints instead of posing with a watch they can’t afford. The location? Bang on. Farringdon tube is a stone’s throw away, so even if you’ve had a few too many, you won’t need to embark on a cross-city trek that feels like a scene out of *Lord of the Rings*. And once inside, the seating options are spot on. You can choose from cozy corners, bar stools with just the right amount of wobble, or, if you’re feeling social, a communal table that doesn’t force you into awkward conversations about the weather. In short, The Castle is just good. Really, properly good. So stop reading this, go down there, and get yourself a pint. Because this is what a London pub should be—no frills, no fuss, just fantastic.

I had such a lovely experience at The Castle. From the atmosphere to being quickly greeted, seated and served. I was served by Alex who was smiling the whole time and stayed patient as I listed out my orders and also checked up on our table to make sure things were running smoothly which I really appreciated. Such a great pub will most definitely be coming again!!

Don’t trust these folks. I have been at this pub now for a few visits, always enjoying my experience. However, tonight, I left my sunglasses on a chair near the bar. Came back less than 10 minutes later, with very few people in the bar at the time we left, and glasses are gone. Stolen, I believe, by the people that work there. They were rude tonight from the start, showed disdain for my friends when we ordered our drinks late in the evening (but well before they closed) and never showed us any respect or care even though we were courteous, and not at all intoxicated. I am furious at one lady bartender in particular and I believe she knows what happened. However, I could be wrong and willing to accept that though I fundamentally believe, that since no one was inside the pub when we left, that they took my rather expensive sunglasses. Come on guys, I would rather tip you 100 quid each rather than losing the glasses, i suspect that arrangement would have been acceptable to you. So pissed you didn’t deliver these back to me. You know better.

I popped in for a glass of wine after work, and this place did not dissapoint. Great selection of wine and beer. Excellent and attentive service. I was served by Sam and a lovely belgian girl. ( I don’t remember her name. sorry) Overall superb place to go with amazing bar staff. I will be back for sure. :)

Really well looked after by the staff and manager, and food was excellent too, much better than we'd normally expect from pub food! Also we were booking on the night of the Euros final when a lot of pubs were taking advantage and inflating prices or charging just for entry, but the Castle was very fair only taking a small deposit and allowing it to be used towards food and rdrink spend - we'll be back - thanks :)

We were in the upstairs room for a large family gathering. The staff were polite, friendly and attentive. The food was tasty and the drinks were good. All in all we had a fab time. MF

Really enjoyed our lunch here. Service was excellent, all the bar staff really friendly. It was a traditional pub menu and everything was very tasty and arrived quickly which was great considering we were a table of 10 people.

Had a lovely time at a private party, service was quick and consistent from Valentina and she smiled the whole time it really set the mood, would absolutely come again!!

Went here today 22/04/24 at lunch for a few drinks and food, had the 3 starters for £17 and they were big and very high quality, aswell as the steak & ale pie meals we thoroughly enjoyed our visit in very pleasant quiet surroundings... in the 2 hours we had in there we were dealt with by 3 ladies who all had great people skills and made us feel very welcome... great pub

I know the whole of the hospitality sector is struggling for staff right now, but a subpar supervisors just to fill out the whole on your rota is not where you want to go. I had an awful experience with the supervisor at this location on Monday late afternoon. Let the young lady tell you herself about the exchange and don't expect her to let you speak. Surprisingly good pub and just next to entrance to busy tube station so I expected it would have been crowded as hell at Friday evening but we managed to find a table after visiting Nandos next door. They pour nice pint of Guinness which is not that common in London anymore, fast one too. Price is normal, 6.65, so close to devil's number. We had good time, music wasn't loud, service was attentive and you could tell they have a good team there. Not my area at all but please visit when nearby you won't be disappointed. Liked decor and painting, toilet was clean which is not a case in so many places in London. Decent, honest pub.

Don’t bother ……. We booked a table for 4pm for a roast. Specifically booked for a roast. To be told only 1 chicken left and nut roast. Disgusting. The attitude from the staff also unacceptable. Not even an apology. Did not even advised us no roast left when we arrived. Let us buy drinks without even saying no roasts. This place is a disgrace. I will keep you posted if the proprietor contacts me.

Called in for a pint after tea. Lovely old style historic pub, nice atmosphere for the time of the day, service was solid but had two pints of Peroni and both where flat.

We took my mum in for a drink for her 70th birthday today after she recently told us that she had celebrated her 18th and 21st birthdays in there. I emailed the pub yesterday telling them and just asking if I could take her upstairs so she could see the function room where she’d had her celebrations all those years ago. When we arrived, we ordered our drinks and were told that the first round was being paid for by the manager. An incredibly kind gesture that we all hugely appreciated. That’s how you get returning customers! Made my Mum‘s day! Thanks again!

We've been coming to the Pub Quiz on a Tuesday for nearly a year now. Its in the upstairs area which is a little quieter and has it's own small bar which opens during the quiz. Staff are always lovely and the quiz is great fun!
