The George Inn in Weymouth and Portland

Beware, this pub is now serving a pint of normal ale at £5.80, nearly £6 a pint? Nowhere in the Weymouth area is doing this, crikey, that's expensive!

We both chose goat curry from the menu, were seated and waited at least thirty minutes when we were told there was no goat curry. No apology. We were offered either lamb or chicken curry and chose one of each. Thirty minutes wait. Tasty curries, but small portions, the lamb having at best four cubes of meat. Nice rice. No refund offered for the downgrade from goat. Expensive for what it was.

Friendly staff. The food was good although the sirloin steak didn't look like it was a sirloin steak. Fish and chips were great. Pub garden is lovely and kids were occupied by the swing. It's a nice pub.

My wife and I popped in for a drink on Sunday after a walk but weren’t really looking to eat as it was a bit early for us, but we were made to feel very welcome by the staff and stayed long enough to get the munchies. We inquired about a Sunday lunch and decided to go with it judging by how popular it was and seeing the lovely meals being served. We had a a lovely Sunday roast, one beef one pork. The meals were served with lovely perfectly cooked veg and plenty of meat with Yorkshire pudding and roast potatoes. Many thanks to the chef and all the staff for a memorable meal in a lovely old unspoiled pub steeped in history. We will be back, thanks!

Solid local puberage with live music and good selection of beers. Our only pique was food service finishing early which we missed two nights in a row… Kitchen closes 4pm on a Sunday.

Me and some friends dropped in for dinner and we were very happy that we had made that decision. Excellent service and very delicious food, would highly recommend.

Chanced apon this pub after a long walk. Lots of different ciders to try and advice on which would suit us best when we said our preference. The team was super friendly and there was a specials menu with fresh fish. We both had herb crusted hake, one served on a bed of spaghetti and one on new potatoes. Both had a light chilli dusting. It was amazing and CV nearly all ingredients were cooked to order. We even had a pudding (the bread and butter pudding and thick custard was superb). More than that the warm welcome and friendly atmosphere were brilliant. Definitely a place to go again. Thank you.

Nicely decorated pub where you can enjoy a delicious meal, they have a varied menu.

An interesting pub to say the least. It definitely felt like a locals pub as the employees seemed to know everyone who was there, you feel a little bit like an outsider if you've not been before. We went for a Sunday roast, but as someone who doesn't particularly enjoy roasts I wasn't too impressed, however my family enjoyed it and we're very impressed by the size of the jug of gravy. When we first arrived we were seated in their entrance room, which was rather gloomy and dark, it felt a little awkward. When the waitress came over to take our order, we hadn't even been given a menu or directed to one, there was no comfort or direction in how we were meant to order etc. Once we had asked to move to the garden, we felt much more relaxed. Not really my ideal pub environment, but the locals seem to like it and the price was about right. I think a little more focus on hospitality to newcomers and this place could be great, or perhaps we just caught them on an off day.

There's a quiz on Thursday nights, if your interested they serve proper-job and at least 4 other cask ales. There are even a few craft beers my friend enjoyed with mango favour!

A nice old pub with carictor, good beer, can't comment on food as it was not available on this day, but they put on a BBQ and it was very nice, sat out in the garden on this nice warm sunny day. Staff very friendly, and helpful. The George is dog friendly. Recommended pub.

Great for drinks and a meeting place

Vibe was good and unfortunately staff got our orders wrong quit a bit. To be fair we had a large table of 11 people over a public holiday - the bar was busy but the food was pretty disappointing for the price. We dan recommend the chilli, jerk chicken and lamb, as well as the pudding

Fabulous 17th century pub on Portland with a lovely wood fire burning in the side bar, lots of seating inside and out, catering for food, with a large selection of ales, lagers and more. Truly worth a visit to this Jacobean Building.

The food was 10/10 Visited today for Mothers Day, plenty of mean enough vegetables and a huge jug of gravy perfect for us. The only downside was we were squeezed on a table where other diners had to get up to let us in. Won't put us off eating here again though.

Just had a lunch today and for the price in the menu I expected a good food, service is good, but the food blend, no taste, chips I could see the oil leaking look like they never changed the oil. Not recommend to eat at this place but ok for drinking.

A group of 10 of us all enjoyed our meals. Best pub food I've had in a long time - definitely the best chips I've had at a pub ever, amazing home cooked chips. Desserts were so yummy too. We will definitely return! Good prices too.

Was there in Nov 2023 , food had just been restarted that very weekend, so was a bonus on our trip down . Loved it , can't wait to go again .

Spent the evening of New Years Eve here, quietly unassuming & full of character with excellent local ginger beer.

Probably the worst pub roast I've ever had. Took over 40 minutes after everyone else's had arrived and the "large" just meant an extra roast potato. Ordered brownie and ice cream for pudding which took nearly an hour. So if you're going for lunch, plan to be there all afternoon. Def not worth price and wouldn't go again which is a shame as pub itself has an authentic and friendly atmosphere.

Awful experiance for our Grandads 91st birthday! 3.5 hours for 2 course to come out and be eaten! Food was rubbish service was rubbish 1 waitress running round like a headless chicken! Would not recommend!

Very quiet today. Wet weather and on the cool side. Usually busy atmosphere in the evenings. Food presentation excellent as is the quality. Good choice on the menu. Would recommend for Sunday lunch or Sunday barbecue sessions. Booking advisable.

I haven’t been to the George in years, we had a lovely Lunch, with excellent service and were made really welcome, we then sat in the beautiful garden. Can’t praise them enough. Prices were very reasonable as well

Nice traditional pub, very kind staff but the food is average at best

Traditional pub food served in a timely manner by very helpful staff. We called last minute thanks to some dodgy weather at our campsite and they still managed to arrange tables to seat the 6 adults and 9 children in our group.

I love the George Inn, on Portland. I always have, and I guess I always will. Whatever way you cut it, it's simply superb. Atmosphere. Service. Selection and quality of ales. It hasn't changed a jot in all the years I've been going there - and that's a lot of years - and I hope it never does. No pub compares with it.

Hidden gem! Lovely building, absolutely fantastic staff who are on the ball, quick and just so friendly. Great food and lovely garden at the back.

Got there in the heavy rain and mist, completely drenched and I received a very warm welcome. Cold beer, warm fire, hot meal, I could have stayed there all afternoon. The pub is very cozy and the staff is amazing. Thanks guys!

Good customer service, lacked urgency with the delivery for food, well over an hour wait on a Friday evening. Average food (Mac and Cheese), decent selection of drinks available. If you are not in a hurry for food, I would recommend it.

Went for Sunday carvary, which was delicious! I had lamb and beef and both were tender. The veg was nicely done and plenty to share round. Gravy was lush. Only slight point was we only had three tattys, which is not enough for me but luckily someone gave me one of theirs. Definitely recommend. Nice local, old type pub.

What a gem, wonderful atmosphere, friendly, welcoming warm & as for the food, out of this world, would recommend this place if you want fabulous food at reasonable prices. Sat down to get some lunch and went to the bar to order but was blanked by the staff member. After 10 minutes of being ignored in favour of chatting with people at the bar we walked out. First acknowledgement of us from the staff member was a sarcastic 'thanks' as we left

This great pub has not changed too much over the years. Architecturally interesting, good choice of beer and good food when available ( food not available every day ). I will return again.

Good old pub The George Inn is. Sunday roast was lovely and beef was tender. Service was professional polite and fairly quick. Rooms are smal, so if you like the feel of an old inn this place is perfect for you. Would come bck Thank you.

We had a Sunday lunch here yesterday and I have to say, it was one of the best pub roasts I've had in a very long time. We were able to get a table for six adults and two toddlers without a fuss, and even managed to get our own little dining room. The staff were super friendly and the food itself was incredible. The meats were cooked to perfection and there were all the trimmings. The roast spuds were crisp on the outside and beautifully fluffy on the inside. Quite often you get spuds from a pub that are a bit limp and chewy. Not these ones! Everyone walked out completely full and very happy. Even the little ones were happy little campers. If you're in Portland and need somewhere reliable for a feed that is great value for money, I can't recommend The George enough.

Just popped into the George for a quick evening bite. My wife had cod & chips, which she didn't enjoy, and I had a chicken burger with 'rustic chips' and Slaw. Sadly the chicken was inedible and was tough enough to resole my shoes, so I left it to suffer on my plate. The rustic chips were pitted with eyes, burnt bits and rough ends. Beware of this place; expensive, poor quality pub food at its worst.

Four real ales of some quality to choose from.

Great pub up on the top. Not been ripped out and modernised. Lots of small rooms. Decent beer garden. Several real ales on handpump. Friendly staff. They do food but not tried. Bus outside goes back to Weymouth.

Was looking forward to a lovely suday roast with the the family , but was very disappointed, very little meat, parsnips hard and not roasted, fatty roast potatoes, and thin and no real taste gravy . Refunded part of our meal, as the same as another couple, sadly we wont be returning 😔

Probably the worst fish and chips I've ever had and possibly the smallest. Peas boiled to death,tiny fish completely overcooked and not even battered properly. The chips were greasy and limp. It is a shame as the food used to ok here
