The Old Dog in Derbyshire Dales

Didn't have food but it looked amazing, we had couple of beers after walk and place was packed.Dogs allowed and great atmosphere, great selection of craft lagers and ales defo be coming here again.

Stopped here after a 7 hour trek and they managed to get a table for 16 with just an hour's notice @4:30 pm. The drinks were good and the food very good. The staff were very friendly and accommodating.

We called in for lunch after a few hours walking on the Tissington Trail. Lovely dog friendly pub. I had the vegan pie and my partner had steak and ale pie. Food was delicious and staff were friendly and attentive.

Great place to get things done, lots of space and no cats.

The Old Dog hosted my 60th birthday lunch for 30 + people at the weekend. They had thought of everything . They decorated the end of the room and kept the beautiful fire going. The food was fabulous and the staff had endless patience as we hovered by the bar. I felt very special indeed . Thank you so much to your amazing team Sally

Totally wouldn’t recommend this place, shocking service and staff. Couldn’t even get 3 bowls of chips when we called in today as they said they had other tables in for food . I also suggest you take a bit of extra care of the outside as it was very very untidy

Went here the other day after a lovely walk on Tissington trail with the family and the dog. The staff were rude, and the young blonde haired lady just looked up and down at us, then walked away and ignored us from behind the bar after asking her a question about the menu! Sorry to say, you're nothing special to look at! All we wanted was a drink and some food after being recommended by friends. Would not recommend this place after being treated like this.

Wow what a lovely pub we stumbled across after crossing the river via the local stepping stones far in the valley below. Back up the hill a five minute drive away. Excellent food (probably the best steak sandwich I’ve ever had and the beef is local), superb real ale, two real fires and very friendly service. If only I was a local! Highly recommend, well done guys.

The fish & chips was fantastic with good service however there was an inescapable smell of pee which was unpleasant.

A delicious Sunday lunch, home cooked food at its best. It’s a long time since we enjoyed a pub meal such as this. What a welcoming olde worlde pub offering excellent service - we will certainly return. An added bonus, it’s next door to Pipes in the Peaks. The two venues make an Amazing day out.

I would recommend The Old Dog to everyone that likes quality food with excellent service. A pub that helps the local farmers serve their excellent produce. Definitely one for all to try.

This was a long overdue visit. Having stopped many times previously for a couple of drinks after some glorious walking, we were keen to try the fab looking menu. We made a special trip for late Sunday lunch (5.30pm) but even though it was late in the day we were made to feel very welcome. The Beef roasts with sides of Red Cabbage and Cauliflower cheese as extras - followed by a shared Bread and Butter pudding were perfect. The kitchen seemed highly aware of allergies and were able to offer exact advice for my Gluten Allergy. Highly recommend making the 10 minute trip from Ashbourne to try The Old Dog.

Booked a large table for a group of us, they were very accommodating in taking a preorder. The roast was cooked to perfection, definitely quality over quantity 👌

Friendly pub with lots of inside and outside space in town near the carpark and with some great walks on the doorstep. Good selection of beers, only had snacks but would definitely go for food next time as it looked great

Extremely Lovely food but that’s where it ends. Service from totally disorganised inexperienced staff ruined the occasion . On arrival nobody took our drinks order At the bar & then after confusion over our booking we waited at our table for 30 minutes to have our order taken & then another hour for food to arrive. In between people nearby were ordering and being served food quickly. I appreciate the pub was busy but why take reservations from people when you can’t cope.

I stopped here for a drink after a walk with a friend a couple of months ago and last week I visited again. This time for food. The service here is great. The atmosphere is really friendly too with lots of dogs. There’s a great selection of beers on tap. My friend and I had the pie (I had the vegan one) and we both said how delicious it was. What we also liked is that we were left to leave a tip rather than the standard service charge being automatically added. The Old Dog is the best pub I have been to for a very long time and I can’t wait to walk in the Peak District again for the excuse to go back!

Dog friendly, good food and lovely staff

Lovely pub in a beautiful location. Just off the Tissington Trail. We ate here one evening after doing a circular walk around Ilam. We were in our campervan and were allowed to stay over in their carpark, on the condition that we ate in the pub. The food was great and excellent value for money. I had the burger and my wife had the pie. This is a real ale pub with plenty of choice of beers. I can while heartedly recommend the plum porter.

Sunday lunch today - 6 of us. Fantastic service sorting us out with table. Food extremely good. Pub firmly on radar for more visits.

Absolutely loved our meal here, we stopped in for lunch after a long rainy walk, greeted with a lit fire and cosy surroundings. The food was scrumptious, and I only wish our visit was longer as we were tempted by so many of the dishes! The staff were wonderful and so friendly. I would highly recommend The Old Dog and would happily visit again in future!

Without a doubt, the best pub Sunday lunch we’ve ever had! The meat was melt in the mouth and the vegetable sides were beautifully cooked and presented. We had creamy cauliflower cheese, gorgeous braised red cabbage and fresh tasty greens. All of the staff were friendly and efficient and the pub itself was so cosy and welcoming. A fabulous start to our holiday and would recommend highly!!

Lovely rural pub. Very busy on weekend. We eat outside due to dogs. Service and food was excellent. Reasonable prices. Parking excellent.

We visited today after a lovely walk around dove dale and tissington. A very cozy pub with a great outdoor area. When we arrived there were no tables available, the staff were really apologetic so we sat outside. After 10 mins or so they came and found us to let us know a table was available so we were able to enjoy a lovely lunch next to the fire. Really nice food and drinks with great service and a cracking location. Will definitely be back soon!

Went on the cuff as out walking and staying a couple of miles away . Made to feel really welcome with the dog . Great beers , great fire and nibbles spot on. We will be back when in the area

A charmingly cosy pub but with a nice modern feel. We didn’t book and chanced it with our dog on a busy Saturday. We sat at a small bar area table but it got a bit crowded and the attentive staff member spotted this and was very accommodating to move us to a better table. Steak and ale pie came out very fast and was delicious. A lovely lively place for food and drinks!

Only stopped for a quick pint which was lovely, the food that was coming out of the kitchen looked great. Will be back when next in the area to sample more.

Looked to be a really nice place but there is a very limited menu in the garden and it was too busy inside for our 3 giant dogs so we went elsewhere. Super location for a drink if you've been walking on the Tissington Trail.

Really lovely pub. The food portions could be a bit bigger but the prices are reasonable. Their beer selection is fantastic and there is plenty of room inside and outside. Dogs welcome. Great service too.

A very attractive pub, very conveniently located near to Dovedale, Ashbourne, Tissington etc. Staff were great, the service was good, atmosphere good. Very, very dog friendly. Sadly, the food was tasty, but the salad that came with the tasty burger was the smallest serving of Cole slaw I've ever seen, tasty though it was. I will go back, but I won't rush.

Popped in for lunch after a long roundabout walk to the stepping stones, lovely friendly staff. Good drinks menu and had a fantastic lunch menu. Dog and kid friendly. Glad we booked as it was busy and buzzy. We’ll be back in the winter to sit by the open fire and try the winter dishes

We visited on a few occasions before and the food was delicious and well presented albeit rather expensive. However on this visit, it was still as expensive but the food was poorly presented, really bad to the point I left the entire contents of the burger and made a chip butty out of the bap. I was given normal mayo although it was a vegan option. Not sure if it's a new chef or it's changed hands but it's night and day to how it was a year ago. Very disappointed

Been a few times and never disappointed but OMG we came today for Sunday lunch and this was the best Roast Dinner we have ever had. The beef was mouth watering good and all sides etc.. we're perfect. Would give this 10 stars if we could x

Stopped here twice (out and back) on the Tissington Trail. It is just a short walk from the trail (albeit up hill!). We grabbed drinks, crisps, nuts and cake, which was all excellent. The venue is dog friendly, very clean and has friendly staff. There is a choice is indoor and outdoor seating. We chose outdoors as we had 3 bike and a dog trailer, plus is was one of the hottest days of the year. The prices are reasonable and I would highly recommend it as a stop on the trail. Dog friendly, family friendly and great choices. Thanks!

A meal at The Old Dog won't disappoint. Me and my two boys have just enjoyed a wonderful meal. We had a couple of the homemade pizzas and a steak and ale pie. Excellent atmosphere and friendly and professional staff.

Great little country pub, very accommodating and absolutely gorgeous food. We visited on Sunday, 9 of us in total including 3 toddlers. We didn't realise there was a Sunday menu, but luckily there was something for everyone, including the fussy eaters. Children's portions were perfect for little mouths. The Pork/Beef dinners were something else; so nice! The desserts after... perfect. Couldn't recommend this place enough. A little pricey but certainly worth it. Great staff, very helpful and attentive.

OMG what a great find. We popped in on the recommendation of someone and were not disappointed. The bhaji burger is amazing. We were lucky as there was room but reservation labels were on all tables so recommend booking in advance

I had the old dog burger and that was amazing. The burger patty was cooked to perfection. I opted for the chunky chips but these were sub-par and came out as small crispy flat wedges with no real centre. Disappointing as the burger was so good.

Two delicious fillet steaks and two scrummy burgers, steaks perfectly cooked and really tender. Lovely desserts too, creme brulee and sticky toffee pudding. Very nice young man serving. Good place to visit.

Popped in for a quick drink as we were passing. Luckily the rain held off and we sat outside. Good job as the seating in the pub was all plain wooden seats and chairs. It was patently obvious that this wasn't a pub to get comfortable in. Pack them in and get them out springs to mind. Beer was OK though and the car park was big enough.

Really lovely pub, very friendly and the best steak pie I have ever had. Jam packed with steak! Really homely atmosphere. Gets busy so best to book ahead if you can. Tried the cocktail of the week which was a limoncello spritz, excellent.

11 person sit down catered for expertly

Two adults plus Labrador visited early evening to eat. Excellent service by a relatively young staff who were very efficient and friendly. Beer was great - Hartington Whim was a good choice. The sea bass fillet was excellent and if the rest of the menu is as good I look forward to trying it!

We have just been for a meal here and it was totally amazing and absolutley faultless. Such a lovely friendly welcoming the whole time we were there by Olivia who was amazing and such an adorable lady. We were also served by a young guy who was lovely too. I had Steak and ale pie and it was so delicious and was my friends fish and chips. I very very highly recommend. This is a dog friendly place too so my Lola is happy to have my leftovers. The is a beautiful seating area outside too which is full of character. The best xx thank you Olivia x

Fantastic food, and service was great considering how busy they were. We loved our visit.

It was very busy on Sunday. The landlord was very helpful in finding us a table. We ordered vegan Sunday roast. It arrived with roast potatoes, cumin cauliflower and Yorkshire pudding. We expected vegetables to arrive soon and the food was already lukewarm so we started. Eventually we asked for vegetables. They had been forgotten so they arrived when I had finished eating the rest of the food. Green veg nice but they also sent cauliflower cheese. First, this wasn't vegan as requested and second it was another portion of cauliflower. So I don't recommend the vegan option.
